Iran Raps E3 over Maximalist Demands

The Iranian nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was signed in July 2015…reports Asian Lite News

The Iranian Foreign Ministry said that the E3 group of France, the UK and Germany as well as the US have realised that they have to quit their “maximalist demands” in the negotiations to restore the historic 2015 nuclear deal.

“If we have a common text today, it is the result of the Western sides adopting a more realistic approach in the Vienna talks and realizing that they cannot have demands beyond the scopes of the nuclear deal in the ongoing negotiations in the Austrian capital,” Xinhua news agency quoted Mnistry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh as saying to the media here on Monday.

He said the mechanisms pursued in Vienna are clear, adding both bilateral and multilateral talks have been held in the Austrian capital between Iran and the P4+1 countries.

The Iranian nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was signed in July 2015.

The eighth round of the Vienna talks began on December 27.

Following a break owing to the arrival of the New Year, the negotiations are expected to resume this week.

US condemns capture of UAE-flagged ship by Houthis

The United States condemns the Houthis’ January 2 seizure of a UAE-flagged merchant vessel off the coast of Hudaydah, Yemen…reports Asian Lite News

The US government has condemned the seizure of a United Arab Emirates (UAE)-flagged cargo vessel off the Yemeni port of Hudaydah as it threatens international trade and regional security, State Department spokesperson Ned Price said.

“The United States condemns the Houthis’ January 2 seizure of a UAE-flagged merchant vessel off the coast of Hudaydah, Yemen. These actions interfere with freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and threaten international trade and regional security,” Price said in a press release on Tuesday.

Price called on the Houthis to immediately release the tanker and crew unharmed and stop all violence interfering with the political process seeking to end the war in the Republic.

The official spokesperson of the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen, Brigadier General Turki Al Malki, earlier said: “At (23:57) on Sunday (2nd January 2022), the Cargo Ship (RWABEE) sailing under the flag of the United Arab Emirates was targeted through ‘piracy and hijacking’ while sailing off the coast of Al Hudaydah Governorate.”

The ship was conducting a maritime mission from the Island of (Socotra) to (Jazan) Port. It was carrying medical field equipment, that were used to operate the Saudi Field Hospital in the Island. The Field Hospital has concluded its mission following the establishment of a hospital on the Island.

Al Malki added that the ship’s field hospital equipment cargo includes ambulances, medical equipment, communication devices, tents, a field kitchen, field laundry units and technical and security support equipment.

“This act of Piracy by the terrorist Houthi militia is a credible threat that highlights the danger of the terrorist Houthi militia on the freedom of navigation and international trade in the South Red Sea and Bab Al-Mandab Strait.

“The terrorist Houthi militia will bear full responsibility as a result of its criminal act of Piracy against the ship, which violates the customary International Humanitarian Law, the San Remo Manual on Armed Conflicts at Sea and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

“The militia must promptly release the ship, or the Coalition Forces will undertake all necessary measures and procedures to handle this violation, including the use of force if necessary,” the spokesperson concluded.

Yemen has been engulfed in an armed conflict between the government forces, led by President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi, and the Houthi rebels. Since March 2015, the Saudi-led Arab alliance, working in cooperation with Hadi’s forces, has been conducting air, land and sea operations against the Houthis. The conflict has created the arguably biggest humanitarian crisis in the world. (ANI/Sputnik)

Blinken also stressed the United States’ commitment to close consultations and coordination with allies and partners as they work toward de-escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

Covid-19 surge could alter daily life for millions in US

The Covid-19 situation is exploding at an unprecedented speed and could alter daily life for millions of Americans during the first month of the New Year…reports Asian Lite News

According to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University, the US reported an all-time high of more than 386,000 new daily infections on Friday.

“New York continues to break its own record, adding 85,476 reported Covid-19 cases, according to Saturday’s briefing from New York Governor, Kathy Hochul,” reports CNN.

Covid-19 surge could alter daily life for millions in US

The number of one day case additions has increased 219 per cent since December 27, when New York reported an addition of 26,737 cases.

“Omicron is truly everywhere. What I am so worried about over the next month or so is that our economy is going to shut down, not because of policies from the federal government or from the state governments, but rather because so many of us are ill,” Dr Megan Ranney, a professor of emergency medicine at Brown University’s School of Public Health, was quoted as saying in the report.

The US continues to be the worst-hit country with the world’s highest number of cases and deaths at 54,859,966 and 825,816, according to the Johns Hopkins’ Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE).

New Jersey recorded more than 28,000 new Covid-19 cases through PCR testing, Governor Phil Murphy posted on Twitter.

In a news conference, the Governor said the number was roughly “quadruple from just two weeks ago, and four times as many cases than during the height of last winter’s surge”.

In Ohio, Governor Mike DeWine has announced the deployment of about 1,250 National Guard members as hospitals struggle with staffing shortages.

Over 2,000 flights were cancelled on New Year’s Day as the Omicron variant of the coronavirus continued to upend airline operations during the holiday travel season in the US.

US e-commerce sales from November 1 to December 24 grew 11 per cent from the same period of 2020 in comparison with a hefty year-on-year increase of 47.2 per cent in the holiday season of 2020, Xinhua news agency quoted the Mastercard SpendingPulse report as saying.

US holiday e-commerce sales growth slows down: Report

The Covid-19 pandemic resulted in robust expansion of online sales in the US, but the breakneck growth has slowed down due to economic reopening and fading growth momentum.

E-commerce sales made up 20.9 per cent of total retail sales in the holiday season of 2021, slightly higher from 20.6 per cent in 2020.

By contrast, e-commerce only accounted for 14.6 per cent of total retail sales in the holiday season of 2019.

The US reported $214.6 billion of e-commerce sales in the third quarter of 2021, up 6.6 per cent year on year, much lower than 36.1 per cent of year-on-year expansion in the same period of 2020, according to adjusted statistics issued by the Department of Commerce on November 18.

The share of e-commerce in total retail sales even declined gradually from 13.8 per cent in Q3 of 2020 to 13 per cent in Q3 of 2021, according to the Department of Commerce.

Trump seeks to keep records from Capitol riot probe panel

The court at the time of its ruling halted the transfer of the records for 14 days to allow Trump to ask the Supreme Court to intervene…reports Asian Lite News

Former US President Donald Trump has appealed to the Supreme Court, asking it to stop the National Archives from transferring his White House records to the House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot.

On Thursday, Trump’s lawyers filed an emergency petition with the Supreme Court, requesting that the Justices conduct a full review of his case fighting the release of some 700 pages worth of records sought by the select committee, reports Xinhua news agency.

Trump seeks to keep records from Capitol riot probe panel

While the Supreme Court Justices are considering the legal and constitutional issues surrounding the case, the Trump team argued, the decision earlier this month by the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals to permit the transfer of the records should be put on hold.

“The D.C. Circuit’s opinion endorsed the power of a congressional committee to broadly seek the records of a prior Presidential administration and, as long as the incumbent President agrees to waive executive privilege, gain unfettered access to confidential communications of that administration,” read the petition.

“This troubling ruling lacks any meaningful or objective limiting principle. In an increasingly partisan political climate, such records requests will become the norm regardless of what party is in power. Consequently, this Court’s review is critical.”

The D.C. Circuit’s decision was made on December 9, in which the three-judge panel unanimously rejected the arguments by the former president’s lawyers that their client could assert executive privilege to prevent the current administration from sharing the Trump White House’s documents with the ‘House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol’.

The court at the time of its ruling halted the transfer of the records for 14 days to allow Trump to ask the Supreme Court to intervene, and Thursday was the deadline for filing a petition.

“The disagreement between an incumbent President and his predecessor from a rival political party is both novel and highlights the importance of executive privilege and the ability of Presidents and their advisers to reliably make and receive full and frank advice, without concern that communications will be publicly released to meet a political objective,” Trump’s filing read.

ALSO READ: Court rejects Trump bid to withhold Jan 6 records

Since suing the National Archives, which keeps the records at issue, and the select committee in October, the Trump team has been arguing that President Joe Biden’s decision to waive Trump’s executive privilege in the context of the case is unconstitutional.

They argued so again in the petition with the high court, saying “to the extent that the Presidential Records Act is construed to give the incumbent President ‘unfettered discretion to waive former Presidents’ executive privilege,’ it is unconstitutional … There is nothing ‘unfettered’ about President Biden’s calibrated judgement in this case”.

A temporary stay of the D.C. Circuit’s ruling could be granted unilaterally by the justice who receives the emergency application, which in this case is Chief Justice John Roberts, according to a report in The Hill media outlet.

But in order for the Supreme Court to take up the case, it will require the approval of at least four of the justices, it added.

Across the state of Illinois, health officials on Tuesday reported 10,264 new confirmed and probable cases of Covid, raising the average number of new daily cases to 10,590 over the past week, up from 7,199 per day a week earlier and 4,057 a month ago.

As of Monday night, 4,008 coronavirus patients were in hospitals across Illinois, the most in a single day since December 30, 2020. Over the past week, the state has averaged 3,829 Covid patients per day, the highest level since early January.
