Jaishankar to visit Russia for two days on Wed

The statement said that Jaishankar will speak on ‘India-Russia ties in a Changing World’ at the prestigious Primakov Institute of World Economy & International Relations in Moscow…reports Asian Lite News.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will go to Russia on a two-day official visit on Wednesday.

A statement from the Ministry of External Affairs said that during the visit from July 7 to 9, Jaishankar will meet his counterpart Sergey Lavrov, the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation.

The discussions are expected to cover the entire range of bilateral issues, including cooperation in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic as well as exchange of views on various regional and international issues, the ministry said.

Jaishankar will also meet the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, Yuri Borisov, his counterpart for the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC). He will also have a meeting with the chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Leonid Slutsky.

The statement said that Jaishankar will speak on ‘India-Russia ties in a Changing World’ at the prestigious Primakov Institute of World Economy & International Relations in Moscow.

The visit will be in continuation of the frequent high-level visits between the two nations. The Russian Foreign Minister had visited New Delhi in April this year. Jaishankar’s visit will further strengthen the ‘Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership’ between the two countries, the statement said.

Earlier this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin had in a phone conversation reiterated their commitment to further strengthen the special and privileged strategic partnership between Russia and India in all spheres.

The last meeting between the two leaders was held in Vladivostok in September 2019. President Putin is scheduled to visit India later this year.

Army Chief reviews security situation in Kashmir

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General M.M. Naravane, reached Kashmir on Wednesday on a two-day visit to review the prevailing security situation in the Union Territory (UT), the army said in a statement.

The army said that on his arrival at Srinagar, General Naravane, accompanied by Lt Gen Y.K. Joshi, the Northern Army Commander, and Lt Gen D.P. Pandey, the Chinar Corps Commander, visited units and formations in the hinterland where he was briefed by the local commanders on the existing security situation.

Naravane was also briefed about the measures being taken to identify and target the network of the over ground workers’ (OGWs) involved in radicalisation and recruitment of youth into terrorist ranks. Efforts to prevent local recruitment and facilitate surrender of local terrorists were also discussed.

“While interacting with the troops, the COAS expressed his appreciation to the jawans and commanders who are relentlessly battling the dual challenges of Pakistan abetted terror and the global pandemic. He further reinforced the need to be prepared to meet the emerging security challenges effectively.

“Later, the COAS was briefed by the Chinar Corps Commander on the overall situation pertaining to the Line of Control and the hinterland,” the army said.

The Army Chief complimented the excellent synergy exhibited by all sections of the Civil Administration, Jammu and Kashmir Police, Central Armed Police Forces and other Security agencies in projecting a ‘Whole of Government’ approach that has resulted in improvement in the security situation conducive for fostering a new era of development in the UT.

The army said that on Wednesday evening, the COAS called on Lt Governor Manoj Sinha at the Raj Bhawan and discussed the emerging challenges and roadmap for long-term peace in J&K.

Pakistan Rangers open fire in Arnia sector, no casualty

Pakistani Rangers fired at an earth-mover machine engaged in cleaning bushes along the International Border on Wednesday in what could be the second ceasefire violation in nearly four months. There was no report of casualty. The BSF neither confirmed nor denied the incident. Sources said Pakistani Rangers fired a few rounds upon noticing the bullet-proof JCB machine clearing the bushes in Arnia sector’s Vikram post area around 8.15 am. The BSF also fired a few rounds in retaliation.

Chinese Defence Minister starts B’desh, Sri Lanka visits

Chinese minister is likely to meet Bangladesh President Md Abdul Hamid and the Bangladesh Army chief during his visit…reports Asian Lite News

Chinese Defence Minister Wei Fenghe will arrive in Dhaka on a brief visit on Tuesday amid the ongoing talks between the two countries over COVID-19 vaccine cooperation.

During his brief visit, the Chinese minister is likely to meet Bangladesh President Md Abdul Hamid and the Bangladesh Army chief.

In December last year, the last-minute postponement of the Chinese Defence Minister’s visit to Bangladesh had raised curiosity about the state of the relations between the two countries.

Meanwhile, Fenghe will later on Tuesday leave for Sri Lanka on a three-day visit, the second high-level visit by a senior Chinese official in recent months.

General Fenghe will be visiting the island from April 27 to 29, Colombo Page reported.

The Minister is slated to hold bilateral talks with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, and other government officials.

This is the second-highest visit by a Chinese official to the island nation following the visit of Yang Jiechi, Vice Chairman, Chinese Communist Party, in October last year.

There have been concerns about Beijing seeking to increase its footprint in the country through contentious infrastructure projects.

Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court is currently hearing several petitions against a Bill that will give special powers to govern the China-backed port city in Colombo.

Meanwhile, amid the controversy surrounding the China-backed Port City in Colombo, Sri Lanka Minister of Justice Ali Sabry has said the government owns 100 per cent of the land and the project has been initiated to bring investment in the special financial zone.

Addressing a media briefing, Minister Sabry said the total area of the investment zone is 269 hectares and 91 hectares for public facilities and cannot be given to the project company, The Colombo Page reported. Out of the remaining land of the financial zone, 116 hectares or 43 per cent will be given to the project company which initiated the project in 2013 and spent USD 1.4 billion to develop the Port City.

“But all 100 per cent of the land is owned by the government. It is completely false to say that land was given to someone else,” Sabry said.

This comes as the opposition has alleged that a bill to set up a Commission to govern a Colombo Port City has given it too much discretion, denied equal opportunity to Sri Lankans who did not have black money stashed abroad.
