‘Wellness Secrets of India’s Tribes’: A Dive into Ancient Healing Practices

During her research, Parvati, along with another researcher and photographer, travelled extensively exposing herself to the rich and diverse cultural heritage of several tribal communities…writes Sukant Deepak

A milkman in a small village in the interiors of Panna, Madhya Pradesh would be suddenly possessed by the spirit of ‘Thakur Baba’, gaining miraculous powers to heal those who truly believed.

In a rare case, a woman Shaman belonging to the Santhal tribe would go into trance and start answering questions, and prescribing ways to heal to those who came to her.

After all, the power of belief can transcend everything else.

There are many more instances that Parvati T, an enthusiast of self-healing practices, witnessed among different tribes across the country — first with awe, then with gratitude.

She has recorded them in her yet-to-be-released book ‘Wellness Secrets of India’s Tribes’, a project sanctioned by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and supported by the Tata Steel Foundation.

Her long journey into holistic coaching and therapy (‘SoulSatya’) led to the creation of a book complete with extensive images.

During her research, Parvati, along with another researcher and photographer, travelled extensively exposing herself to the rich and diverse cultural heritage of several tribal communities.

In Madhya Pradesh, they visited the Gond, Kwandar, and Pardhi tribes, each with their unique healing practices and traditional knowledge.

In Uttarakhand, she connected with the Jaunsari and Bhutia tribes, learning about their herbal remedies and spiritual healing rituals.

West Bengal introduced her to the Santhal and Murmu tribes, whose deep understanding of nature’s healing powers left a lasting impression on her.

In Jharkhand, they spent time with the Munda, Bhil, and Baiga tribes, witnessing their profound respect for the environment and their unique medicinal practices. Additionally, the book features insights from other tribes, each contributing to the rich mixture of India’s indigenous healing wisdom.

She said, “The tribals welcomed us into their homes and lives, showing us a level of personal care and respect that was truly heartwarming. As a woman, I was particularly moved by the respect and consideration they extended to me.”

“In exploring these traditional tribal communities, I have glimpsed into the way we once were – our roots, values, and the simple yet profound way of life that characterised our past. However, these traditions are changing rapidly, influenced by the relentless march of ‘modernity’.”

She feels the transformation threatens to erode the rich cultural diversity that these communities embody, and that it is important to make concerted efforts to support and preserve traditional practices and these communities before they are lost forever.

While ‘vaids’ (traditional healers) may be fast disappearing from the urban landscape, their position remains intact among tribals.

“They have an intricate understanding of the medicinal properties of plants. Their knowledge is vast, stemming from generations of passed-down wisdom. For them, every plant holds a healing property, and it is merely a matter of knowing how to harness it,” she asserted.

“To me, it became clear that while modern medicine offers many solutions, the ancient traditions of healing provide a holistic approach that incorporates the mind, body, and spirit. This belief-driven healing, whether through the spiritual power of a local healer or the botanical expertise of a ‘Vaid’, demonstrates the enduring power of traditional practices and the profound impact they can have on individuals and communities alike.”

While for years, tribes in India and around the world have been healing with plant medicine, ‘mantras’ to even supernatural practices, some of which are considered far-fetched, Parvati, also a columnist and communications professional, believes that at the end of the day, these traditional practices have stood the test of time and the tribal communities, and outsiders like her still go to them for cures when they are at sea.

“There is a certain enigma in their healing practices, and that is why I was drawn to research on the wellness secrets of India’s tribes.”

Planning to continue her research into alternative and traditional forms of healing, she wants to build awareness of tribal knowledge and other forms of natural and self-healing techniques, which are still relevant and have many takers in contemporary times.

Investing in India’s Health and Wellness Sector for High Returns

The domestic travel market in India has been a key driver of growth for the hospitality sector. With international travel still facing restrictions, domestic tourism is expected to surge in 2024…reports Asian Lite News

The Indian hospitality sector has long been recognized as a promising investment avenue, driven by the country’s vibrant culture, diverse landscapes, and growing economy. Despite facing challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the sector is poised for a significant rebound in 2024, offering lucrative opportunities for investors.

Resilience and Recovery

The Indian hospitality sector has shown remarkable resilience in the face of adversity. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the sector has demonstrated its ability to adapt and innovate. With the gradual reopening of the economy and the easing of travel restrictions, the industry is expected to witness a strong recovery in 2024. This presents an ideal opportunity for investors looking to capitalize on the sector’s growth potential.

Growing Domestic Travel

The domestic travel market in India has been a key driver of growth for the hospitality sector. With international travel still facing restrictions, domestic tourism is expected to surge in 2024. This presents a significant opportunity for hoteliers and investors to cater to the needs of domestic travellers. Investments in resorts, boutique hotels, and homestays in popular tourist destinations are likely to yield high returns in the coming year.

Rise of Budget and Mid-Segment Hotels

The budget and mid-segment hotel segments have been gaining popularity in India, driven by the increasing demand from budget-conscious travellers. Investments in this segment are expected to be particularly lucrative in 2024, as travelers prioritize affordability and value for money. Hotel chains focusing on this segment are likely to see strong demand, making it an attractive investment opportunity.

Focus on Health and Wellness Tourism

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a heightened focus on health and wellness, with travellers seeking destinations that offer wellness experiences. India, with its rich heritage of traditional medicine and wellness practices, is well-positioned to capitalize on this trend. Investments in wellness resorts, spas, and retreats are expected to be highly profitable in 2024, as travelers prioritize health and well-being in their travel choices.

Technology and Digitization

The pandemic has accelerated the adoption of technology in the hospitality sector. Hotels and resorts are increasingly leveraging technology to enhance the guest experience, streamline operations, and improve efficiency. Investments in technology-driven solutions such as contactless check-in, mobile payments, and AI-driven customer service are expected to be key drivers of growth in 2024.

Sustainable Tourism Practices

Sustainability has emerged as a key trend in the hospitality sector, with travellers increasingly seeking eco-friendly and sustainable travel options. Investments in sustainable tourism practices, such as green hotels, eco-friendly resorts, and responsible tourism initiatives, are expected to be highly profitable in 2024, as travellers prioritize environmental conservation and responsible travel.

Luxury Segment:

The luxury segment continues to attract significant attention from investors. With India emerging as a favoured destination for high-net-worth individuals and luxury travellers, upscale hotels and resorts are witnessing a surge in demand. Investing in luxury properties can offer handsome returns, particularly in prime locations such as popular tourist destinations and metropolitan cities.

Rural Tourism and Homestays:

Beyond urban centers, rural tourism and homestays are emerging as promising investment avenues. Immersive experiences that offer insights into local culture, traditions, and lifestyles are gaining traction among travellers seeking authentic experiences. Investing in rural tourism initiatives and supporting local communities can yield both financial returns and social impact.

Government Initiatives:

The Indian government’s initiatives to boost tourism, such as the “Incredible India” campaign and the development of tourism infrastructure, provide a conducive environment for investment. Investors can leverage government schemes, incentives, and policies to maximize returns and mitigate risks in the hospitality sector.

The Indian hospitality sector is poised for a strong rebound in 2024, offering lucrative investment opportunities for investors. With the growing domestic travel market, the rise of budget and mid-segment hotels, the focus on health and wellness tourism, the adoption of technology, and the emphasis on sustainable tourism practices, the sector presents a compelling investment proposition.

Focus on wellness habits

Some women feel they lose their sense of being a woman. Menopause is a part of being a woman, as much as other cycles. To tackle this feeling, you can double up on activities that help you express your feminine energy and make you feel more like yourself…Dr Ashdin

The word ‘Menopause’ is known to scare most women. It is a common misconception among women that life ends at the onset of menopause or around perimenopause, i.e. the time around menopause. Instead, that stage needs to be looked at as a start of a new style of life. Do not look at it only biologically, but also as a time when most of your share of responsibilities are done. If you have kids, they are probably grown up. This is the time to develop the habit of looking at and exploring new interests. Beyond that, there are a few habits, which if developed, women can reap benefits from.

Explore New Interests

When you invest your energy in finding a new hobby or doing something just for the joy it brings you, it will help you channel your energy. The irregularity of emotions, hot flashes, and overall discomfort you may face when you are at these stages, will just be a part of your life instead of focus. Once you start to develop a habit of discovering things you like to do and pursue, your thoughts will be preoccupied and you will be happier for doing something just for yourself.

Express Your Feminine Energy

Some women feel they lose their sense of being a woman. Menopause is a part of being a woman, as much as other cycles. To tackle this feeling, you can double up on activities that help you express your feminine energy and make you feel more like yourself. A great way to do this is to form a habit of meeting and talking to more women. If you already have a group of women friends meet them more often, exchange notes, and plan fun activities together. If you don’t, join clubs or meets where you will find more women like yourself. Talking to like-minded women at the same stage of life will make you feel more confident and self-assured along with a sense of relief. Use your nurturing prowess which you have so lovingly given your family, friends, pets, and kids, for yourself. Treat yourself with more compassion and care and forgive yourself easily. This is not a time to be hard on yourself. You can do this by setting aside some ‘me-time’ and making it a regular habit. Rituals like skin care, massages, eating nutritious food by yourself, reading, walks, and giving yourself time to unwind will do good. Value your core self and embrace spontaneity along with forming other regular habits of nurturing.

Change Your Outlook

Instead of dreading the big bad ‘M’ word, change the lens and look at it as a positive milestone in life. It is a part of life which needs to be embraced, and learned more about. Equip yourself with habits to enjoy this new phase. It is great to welcome this phase around perimenopause with a party with your friends, where everyone can gift you little something to help you tide through and have some fun. Talking positively, learning more about perimenopause and menopause, asking your doctor more questions, developing new habits, and all in all looking at it as a cycle you are ready to own, will keep your spirits up and any kind of fear at bay. Moreover, be patient with yourself and welcome it with a peaceful mind.

Focus On Wellness Habits

Around this time of age, you will most probably be losing muscle mass. If you have not already, start exercising and incorporate a positive exercise routine you can look forward to in your life. This will help you feel stronger and resilient during this phase. Take advice from experts and follow a realistic and impactful exercise habit to increase immunity, strength, and overall wellness. Along with exercise, diet, and sleep is very important to feel fresh and energised. Eating the right kind of foods helps reduce perimenopause symptoms. Develop a habit of mindful eating by including a variety of foods which will increase strength and reduce symptoms. Take help from experts to chart out a diet plan. It is important to develop realistic eating habits. Do not be too hard on yourself or try and change the way you eat drastically one day. Instead include and introduce tasty nutritious foods and flavours you enjoy and which are easily available. Give yourself a few cheat meals. The focus should be on sustaining the habit of eating well instead of fad diets. Overall if you focus on your wellness, the menopause and perimenopause phases will be easier on your body.

This phase should be a time of personal empowerment and celebration, which should be embarked on with a sense of joy and confidence. By developing certain habits that support you, you can navigate this period with greater ease and positivity.

Let’s travel for a cause

Wellness is no longer considered a concept for the old. Centres are witnessing a growth in younger audiences for preventive healthcare…reports Asian Lite News

Consumer desire for wellness-focused vacations is on the rise, as seen in 2023’s wellness trends. The demand for domestic travel has increased by 50 per cent, according to CGH Earth Wellness Centers. Since before the pandemic, foreign visitors from regions like Russia and Europe have remained devoted customers.

Consumer insights, both from CGH’s diverse customer base and research, highlight the following big trends in the $1.5 trillion global wellness industry.

Restorative Travel and Healing Holidays

Prevention is better than cure couldn’t ring truer. Rather than having to go for curative spells at a hospital, more and more people are turning towards traditional, holistic health. Classical Kerala Ayurveda & Prakruti Chikitsa – Indian Naturopathy has proven to have produced great results with regards to lifestyle disorders and other long-term health conditions.

Wellness is no longer considered a concept for the old. Centres are witnessing a growth in younger audiences for preventive healthcare.

Having seen an older generation who have had to be on lifelong medication for their lifestyle disorders, the young are now turning towards Naturopathy & Ayurveda as a means to prevent going down the same road. One is seeing a big change in the mindset of the younger generation who are emphasizing on clean eating, fitness and leading a more mindful existence. They are opting for wellness based getaways and self-healing journeys. Preventive health programs which are transformative are popular with the young-set. Curative programmes are more for the older generation and are typically need based. Gen Z is now looking for a drug-free, non-invasive approach to leading a more healthy and balanced life.

Renewed interest in Ayurveda post pandemic

The Kerala Ayurveda philosophy has been accepted worldwide for its immense benefits and the science and methodology of treatments. The Panchakarma treatment course that involves 21 days has helped people change their lives. Society, now at large is realizing the need for the responsibility of taking their health into their own hands, by tapping into India’s ancient wisdom of medicine that is globally revered and respected.

Solo Travel for Wellness

People are increasingly choosing Solo travel which helps them go through self-healing and a holistic transformational process. Being able to re-connect with nature helps solo visitors rebalance their lives and be in sync with their mind, body and soul. Solo Travel enables people to set themselves on the right path to healthy living.

Investing time and money to travel for well-being

People are willing to allocate one break in the year completely dedicated to their wellbeing. They are also willing to spend more, if it means better year -round health and a more positive state of mind. From a traditional mind-set of pushing wellness to a later date, and a need-to-do basis, one is seeing a more proactive and a must-do approach.

Serene Healing Spaces are lending to the increase in wellness breaks

To be able to address one’s health but not feel like a patient in the traditional sense seems to be what is resonating with a vast number of people, especially those who have understood the importance of preventive healthcare and those addressing the onset of lifestyle disorders. Keeping one’s mind happy during a treatment course has been talked about in modern medicine as well, and healing spaces have become an important role in achieving a positive state of mind.

‘Wellness is the key to holistic health’

Cross-training on other days. This helps bring multidisciplinary fitness to you. E.g. I used to alternatively play tennis and cycle and this helped me reduce my soreness from a previous day’s run, and accelerate my recovery… Nikhil Kapur, Co-Founder and Director of Atmantan Wellness Centre speaks with Lothungbeni Humtsoe

Running a marathon can be exhausting, especially amidst the summer heat which lasts until the end of October in our country – sometimes, even early November. The following months, nonetheless, get better, making them more suitable for running a marathon.

With the weather conditions improving, there are over 350 marathons scheduled to take place before 2022 ends and marathon tourism on the rise – we officially enter the season that marathon runners rejoice.

Therefore if you’re someone who’s beginning to take marathons seriously as an athlete or a tourist, Nikhil Kapur, Co-Founder and Director of Atmantan Wellness Centre, who has himself participated five times in the Ironman Triathlon, gives you an insight:

What does wellness mean to you?

NK: It’s a way of life where I take decisions that are beneficial for my well-being. The choices that I take keep me positive and aligned with my goals. So besides the exercise and nutrition quotients (which was be the only aspects of wellness for someone), having one’s thoughts and actions aligned is more important. Wellness is also about wearing an attitude which rubs off or inspires others too. Lastly, It’s also about contributing to the health of the community in any way, as to be “well” is not an ‘I’ concept, but something that one does better when in numbers and with support.

What initially motivated you to switch from being a working professional to a wellness entrepreneur?

NK: I was always sure that I would eventually have my own enterprise. I had also always been drawn towards sports and a healthy lifestyle thanks to my father. When the time came, my wife and I saw this requirement for wellness travel/healing holidays that used the best of Indian sciences and observed that there really was no destination that offered people looking for… results and happy transformations; We knew then that this is what we would pursue after our b school and after getting a few years of work experience.

The concept of a wellness holiday is pretty simple. We live complex lives and in the bargain ruin our health. We then try to turn healthy by trying to eat right, going to yoga/gym etc. And as an extension of then, when we do travel, we look for more and we tend to look for destinations that are an extension of our newly acquired healthy lifestyle. This is where Atmantan is seeded. We offer result-oriented programmes for consumers who want to treat their chronic lifestyle ailments using alternative sciences.

According to you, how can one strive to achieve holistic wellness keeping in mind that the concept of wellness is multiplayer?

NK: Wellness is multidimensional. Most of us need some guidance to understand the structure of our body, mind and soul complex. Understanding these concepts brings clarity to how to live life – with happiness while achieving longevity. I believe this is the key to holistic health, where one gains a deeper understanding of these concepts along with personalised learnings (of the lifestyle we follow). It’s a continuous, ongoing process. That said, one need not get overwhelmed at the thought of an all-composite solution, as each one of us can walk this path at our own pace.

How should one train for a longer, quicker marathon?

NK: When training, one should keep in mind that faster timings require…

A structured coaching plan

Needs professional guidance

If you are above the age of 35, then you should get your blood work and tests done (including Dopler and stress tests) to ensure that you are in good cardiac health. Some techniques which will enhance endurance and performance are-

Interval training. This is something that helps performance leap ahead, And there are many effective interval drills to bring the desired result. One of my favs is the fartlek training, which is challenging and very satisfying too. In this training, while maintaining a certain cardio tempo, one switches to an increased pace every few mins.

Strength training. Needless to say, this needs to be every athlete’s foundation.

Cross-training on other days. This helps bring multidisciplinary fitness to you. E.g. I used to alternatively play tennis and cycle and this helped me reduce my soreness from a previous day’s run, and accelerate my recovery.

What does a promising training plan look like?

NK: A good training programme will have a purpose and structure along with recovery days.

What suggestions do you have for folks getting ready to become Marathon tourists?

NK: Always have access to coaching, nutritional advice and physio support when picking destinations. Travelling along with participating in endurance activities takes a more serious toll on our body than we sometimes realise, so pace yourself and listen to your body. Lastly, never underestimate the power of sleep, which is a magical healing pill we all have access to.

It’s officially the marathon season!.(Photo:IANSLIFE)

What can one anticipate for business and consumer behaviour in the wellness sector in 2023?

NK: The consumer continues to get more data-driven. We see great innovation happening in the app space around wearables too.

We foresee a demand for wellness real estate. Consumers will choose to live in spaces that inspire well-being, and also make it easy to make healthy choices.

More wellness in traditional hospitality; There will be a consistent increase in demand for wellness centres/resorts offering result-oriented programmes.

Higher interest in innovative concepts such as adding softer wellness experiences to wildlife lodges, nature getaways, beachside destinations etc.

Alter the way we view health and wellness

A recent survey states that India generates 6,000 tonnes of plastic every day, nearly 10,000 tonnes of which goes uncollected. Adding to environmental pollution, plastic also has a detrimental effect on our health…writes N. Lothungbeni Humtsoe.

Covid-19 has changed everyone’s lifestyle. Today, focusing on the right food, nutrition and boosting immunity no longer remains an afterthought. The pandemic has forced us to pause, rethink and have a holistic approach when it comes to our overall well-being.

While we pay attention to our health by eating healthy, it’s also important to be mindful of what we eat from and ensure our cooking, consumption and storage utensils are safe, sustainable and eco-friendly.

While consumer behaviour is changing to support sustainable brands and eco-friendly practices, plastic still finds dominance in most homes. In fact, our kitchens are replete with plastic jars, containers, utensils, garbage bags etc. and their usage is increasing at an alarming rate. A recent survey states that India generates 6,000 tonnes of plastic every day, nearly 10,000 tonnes of which goes uncollected. Adding to environmental pollution, plastic also has a detrimental effect on our health.

Priyanka Kheruka, Brand Head, Borosil Ltd, said, “When food is heated in plastic, it releases phthalates from the plasticisers and as much as 95 per cent of the chemicals are migrated into our food. Fatty foods like meats and cheese are more prone to leaching and when these are microwaved in a plastic container, the phthalates released can directly affect the lungs, kidneys and liver. BPA on the other hand is linked to heart disease and type 2 diabetes.”

“Unlike plastic, glass is free of toxic chemicals and also retains the natural flavour on heating. It’s also environmentally friendly and can be easily decomposed without emitting toxic chemicals. Using airtight glass containers for storage cuts down on the usage of cling wrap to ensure cut fruits and vegetables and leftover food does not rot or absorb the chemicals from harmful materials used for wrapping. Having steel utensils to cook food can also have a positive impact on health. Steel does not erode or leach harmful chemicals during cooking.

It’s durable, sustainable, helps in retaining the original flavour and is easy to clean, like glass. Replace plastic bottles with stainless steel ones. There are myriad styles and options available in the market today which come in beautiful designs. There are many brands that offer bottles that are 100 per cent food grade and rust-proof and which help in maintaining the temperature of your drink,” she added. “Copper utensils are ideal conductors of heat and are hygienic and corrosion-resistant. The advantages of storing water in copper vessels and bottles are many, having a direct impact on the skin while also having a therapeutic effect. There are plenty of materials and metals to choose from when it comes to incorporating healthy cooking habits.”

Being mindful and conscientious of how we utilize our daily utensils in the kitchen can go a long way in boosting good health for the family, community and society at large while also leaving a positive footprint on the environment.

Wellness retreat at Hilton London Croydon

I was impressed with the health and safety measures in the hotel from the point of arrival, from the use of hand sanitizer to the compulsory use of masks by staff and guests in all public areas in the hotel. I and my wife live in London and often enjoy exploring this vibrant cosmopolitan city. A city whose heritage extends beyond its city boundaries and flows into its extensive suburbs. We decided to venture beyond those boundaries and try a short staycation in Hilton London Croydon hotel.

Wellness retreat at Hilton London Croydon

The current location of Hilton London Croydon is where once stood London Croydon Airport which opened in 1928 and became the world’s biggest and most advanced airport.

We arrived at Hilton London Croydon and were welcomed by their friendly and attentive staff. Our check-in was very quick and we were shown to our spacious wellness room in no time. I was impressed with the health and safety measures in the hotel from the point of arrival, from the use of hand sanitizer to the compulsory use of masks by staff and guests in all public areas in the hotel. I noticed the blue label “the Hilton CleanStay seal” on the entrance door of every room, indicating that the room not only had been cleaned but also sanitized and disinfected.

We chose King Junior Wellness Suite, a new concept initiated by Hilton London Croydon to offer a more relaxed room option. Whether you are staying for leisure or visiting as a business guest, it is good to have an opportunity to reconnect with one’s self in this way.

Wellness retreat at Hilton London Croydon

The room was very modern, comfortable, and spacious. There was a welcome bowl of fruit and a selection of juices, smoothies and an interesting tea and coffee selection. The sound of birds in the room added a sense of mystery and made us feel as though we had been transported to some tropical paradise. We learned that Hilton London Croydon provides a device to play relaxation sounds by the bedside for meditation as a way to de-stress their guests. The hotel takes the well-being of its guests so seriously that it provides a purifying plant in the wellness guest room to improve natural air quality as you rest or sleep. You can also use a lavender pillow spray to relieve stress and have a calm sleep.

Rarely do you find fitness equipment in a hotel room, but in Hilton London Croydon wellness rooms you will including a yoga mat, resistance bands, yoga blocks, and a yoga ball for physical exercise and mental transformation. If you want to go beyond these gentle exercises you could always visit the hotel’s gym which is accessible 24 hours.

Last but not the least, the creative addition to the room is the focus on the idea of light as a healing measure. I found the Himalayan salt lamp on my bedside a great way to relieve anxiety and help increase my energy levels. There was also another light therapy device available on the table. You could choose three levels of intensity to change the brightness to improve your mood. It is said the light affects the flow of chemicals in the brain, improve mood, and helps to have better sleep and we found it really helped.

The concept of the wellness guest room is an innovative approach to bring guests eight dimensions of Air, Light, Scent, Taste, Hydration, Relaxation, Fitness, and Sound for an ultimate experience of joy and rejuvenation.
