India Shines, Rankings Soar 

Bumrah has reached a career-best 883 rating points, the highest rating point tally ever achieved by an Indian fast-bowler…reports Asian Lite News 

Following India’s 295-run win over Australia in the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test at Perth, India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has come back as the top-ranked bowler in the ICC Men’s Test Bowling Rankings. Apart from him, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is another big gainer, as he achieved a career-best second spot in the batters’ list.  

Bumrah picked eight wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the first innings, and claimed Player of the Match honours in Perth, where he was leading India in Rohit Sharma’s absence. It has propelled him to go past South Africa quick Kagiso Rabada and Australia seamer Josh Hazlewood to reclaim the throne of top-ranked bowler in Test cricket. 

Bumrah has also reached a career-best 883 rating points, the highest rating point tally ever achieved by an Indian fast-bowler. Spinners Ravichandran Ashwin (904) and Ravindra Jadeja (899) are the only bowlers from India to record higher point tallies. This is the third time that Bumrah has been top of the rankings this year, after being on top for two one-month phases in February and October this year. 

His fellow pacer Mohammad Siraj has moved up three spots to 25th position in the bowling rankings. Jaiswal, who hit a brilliant 161 in the second innings in Perth, has overtaken Harry Brook and Kane Williamson to reach a career-best second position and gaining a new career-best rating of 825, which is 78 rating points behind the top-ranked England batter Joe Root. 

Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 100, his 30th Test ton, has lifted him nine spots to 13th position after being outside the top 20 batters for the first time in 10 years before the start of Perth Test. KL Rahul, who hit a fine 77 in the second innings has advanced from 60th to 49th position, while all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy has entered the batting rankings in 74th position after hitting good knocks of 41 and 38 not out on debut. 

For Australia, left-handed batter Travis Head has jumped three spots to be at 10th place after notching a fighting 89 in the second innings while Alex Carey (up one place to 39th among batters) and Mitchell Marsh (up 10 places to 68th among bowlers) are among others to progress after their performances in Perth. Steve Smith, who made 0 and 17, has slipped to seventh place, his lowest position since December 2014. 

There’s also been progression in the rankings after West Indies secured a 201-run victory in the first Test against Bangladesh at North Sound, Antigua. Batter Alick Athanaze has moved up 18 places to 62nd position after scores of 90 and 42 while Justin Greaves (up 43 places to 81st) and Mikyle Louis (up 25 places to joint-86th) have also made huge gained. 

West Indies seamers Jayden Seales (up three places to a career-best 11th), Kemar Roach (up four places to 17th) and Alzarri Joseph (up three places to 29th) are other big movers for the hosts’ after taking 14 wickets collectively. 

For Bangladesh, Liton Das and Mominul Haque have inched up a slot each to 32nd and 47th positions respectively, in the batting rankings while fast bowler Taskin Ahmed’s second innings haul of 6-64 has lifted him from 67th to 51st position. In the ODI bowling rankings, Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan has regained the top spot after Shaheen Shah Afridi was rested by Pakistan for their ongoing Zimbabwe tour. 

Pakistan opener Saim Ayub’s 62-ball 113 not out has lifted him 80 places to 90th position in the ODI batting rankings, while Zimbabwe batter Sean Williams has re-entered the batting rankings at 43rd position after scores of 23 and 31 in his first two ODI matches in more than a year.

Yashasvi Jaiswal nominated for ICC Player of Month

India’s in-form opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has been nominated for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for February 2024 alongside New Zealand’s Kane Williamson and Sri Lanka’s Pathum Nissanka.

Jaiswal is nominated for the first time in the ICC Player of the Month awards following a sensational month in Tests against England. India began the month trailing 1-0 after losing the Hyderabad Test by 28 runs, but overturned the deficit with thanks in large part to the remarkable form of Jaiswal.

He smashed back-to-back double centuries in Visakhapatnam and Rajkot – the latter equalling the record for most sixes in a Test innings with 12. With more runs coming in the fourth Test at Ranchi, including a half-century in the first innings, Jaiswal, 22, ended February having amassed 560 runs at an average of 112.

The back-to-back double hundreds at the age of 22 years and 49 days also made him the third youngest batter in the world to record two double centuries in Tests after Sir Donald Bradman and Vinod Kambli. Jaiswal has also rose to the top of the leading run-scorer list in the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle.

On the other hand, Williamson is nominated for the honour for the first time since March 2023 after another series of century scores dominated the headlines in New Zealand’s first-ever Test series victory over South Africa.

Williamson’s two Tests during February heralded 403 runs and the Player of the Series accolade, as he hit twin centuries in the first Test at Mount Maunganui (118 and 109) before his 133 in the second innings at Hamilton helped the hosts chase down 267 to seal a series whitewash.

Meanwhile, Nissanka excelled in Sri Lanka’s recent three ODIs and three T20Is against Afghanistan, smashing the first ever ODI double-century for his country at Pallekele (210 not out in 139 balls) to begin the month in a blistering fashion.

More runs came in the third ODI, as Nissanka hit 118 in 101 balls to seal another convincing win for Sri Lanka, before a half-century in the final T20I showdown capped a fine month. In all, Nissanka hit 346 ODI runs and 91 T20I runs to earn his first nomination for the award.

In the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award for February 2024, UAE duo of Kavisha Egodage and Esha Oza have been shortlisted alongside Australia all-rounder Annabel Sutherland.

All-rounder Kavisha hit 218 runs and took eight wickets during the course of the Asian Cricket Council’s Women’s Premier Cup won by the UAE. Esha, the UAE skipper, claimed the Player of the Tournament award, topping the run-scoring charts with 249 runs at an average of 62.25.

Annabel, meanwhile, unleashed fireworks in her record-breaking 210 off 256 balls– the fastest ever in women’s Tests when Australia faced South Africa in the one-off Test at Perth earlier this month. She proved to be a valuable asset with the ball in hand too, taking 3-19 in the first South Africa innings, followed by 2-11 in the second, as the home side won by an innings.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Soars in Test Rankings

India’s young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal continues his rise in the Test rankings after scoring an unbeaten 214 in the third Test against England in Rajkot as he jumped 14 places to be placed 15th position on the updated rankings for Test batters, released by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old left-hander, who joined a select band of seven cricketers to score double centuries in two consecutive Tests including two Indians — Vinod Kambli and Virat Kohli, also attained a new career-high rating of 699.

Captain Rohit Sharma has moved up one spot to 12th position after also notching a century in the first innings while Shubman Gill has progressed three places to 35th after coming close to a century in the second innings. Debutants Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel have entered the rankings in 75th and 100th positions, respectively.

Player of the Match in Rajkot Ravindra Jadeja’s knock of 112 in the first innings has taken him from 41st to 34th position among batters. He has also consolidated his position at the top of the all-rounders’ rankings, going from 416 to a career-best 469 rating points.

Jadeja scored a century and claimed seven wickets for the match in that emphatic Test victory and moved to a new career-high rating while maintaining his place as the No.1 ranked all-rounder in Test cricket.

Meanwhile, Kane Wiliamson has strengthened his position at the top of the batting rankings after notching a century against South Africa, his seventh in seven Tests.

Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin slides closer to Indian teammate Jasprit Bumrah at the top of the Test bowling rankings courtesy of a one-place jump to second after he went past 500 Test wickets, while Jadeja jumped three places to sixth on the same list following his five-wicket haul in England’s second innings in Rajkot.

England opener Ben Duckett’s quickfire 153 in the first innings has lifted him 12 places to 13th position.
