India offers support to Africa in fight against Omicron variant

“We have also cleared supplies of COVAXIN to Botswana. Any new requirement projected either bilaterally or through COVAX will be considered expeditiously,” the MEA statement added…reports Asian Lite News.

Expressing solidarity with African countries that have been affected by the deadly COVID variant Omicron, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in a statement on Monday said India stands ready to support countries in the continent, including by supplies of vaccines, life-saving drugs and test kits.

Noting that the Indian government has already streamlined vaccine supplies to African countries, it added, the government has cleared all orders placed so far by COVAX for supplies of COVISHIELD vaccines including to African countries like Malawi, Ethiopia, Zambia, Mozambique, Guinea and Lesotho.

“We have also cleared supplies of COVAXIN to Botswana. Any new requirement projected either bilaterally or through COVAX will be considered expeditiously,” the MEA statement added.

Any new requirement by African countries would be considered expeditiously, it stated.

“We have noted the emergence of a new variant of Covid-19, Omicron. We express our solidarity with the countries, particularly in Africa, who have so far been affected by the Omicron variant,” the MEA said in the statement.

“The Government of India stands ready to support the countries affected in Africa in dealing with the Omicron variant, including supplies of Made-in-India vaccines,” it said.

“India also stands ready to supply essential life-saving drugs, test kits, gloves, PPE kits and medical equipment such as ventilators, as may be required,” the statement mentioned.

“Indian institutions would favourably consider cooperation in genomic surveillance and virus characterization related research work with their African counterparts,” it added.

The statement further noted that India has, so far, supplied more than 25 million doses of Made-in-India vaccines to 41 countries in Africa, including nearly 1 million doses as grant to 16 countries and more than 16 million doses under the COVAX facility to 33 countries.

Alvi in soup for letting son to use Guv’s house

Questions are being raised about the Pakistan President using his official position to benefit his family business, while others argued that this was merely a familial obligation…reports Asian Lite News

Pakistan President Arif Alvi said on Tuesday that the choice of venue for the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Alvi Dental and an American company was a “poor judgement”, the Dawn reported.

Taking to Twitter, the Pakistan President — who is a dentist by profession — said that hosting an event for the signing of an agreement between his son Awab Alvi and Bringing Smiles USA at the Sindh Governor’s house “was a matter of poor judgement”.

The statement came after several citizens and politicians questioned whether there was a conflict of interest in the President attending a private event that was hosted at the Governor’s house, the report said.

During the event, which was held on Monday, an agreement was inked to provide affordable dental care to the citizens of the country. The MoU was signed by Awab Alvi of Alvi Dental Hospital and Anas Athar of Bringing Smiles USA, which was witnessed by President Alvi and First Lady Samina Arif Alvi.

Initially, the President had congratulated his son on the venture. “Wish you success in this collaboration with your friends, who are also bringing in foreign investment,” he said on Twitter in response to his son’s tweet.

A picture of the ceremony shared by Awab also showed the President standing in the background, the report said.

Social media in Pakistan is abuzz after the image of the MoU signing showed the President in attendance. Questions are being raised about the Pakistan President using his official position to benefit his family business, while others argued that this was merely a familial obligation, Geo News reported.

Alvi Dental is a private dental business run by the President’s son, from which Arif Alvi resigned after he was appointed the President in 2018.

However, the website of the practice still lists the President as a dentist and part of “Our Team”, even providing an option to ‘schedule an appointment’.

PML-N’s Ayesha Raza Farooq raised several questions about the event. “Why is this signing off taking place at the Governor’s house? Why is the President of Pakistan promoting his family’s business? Isn’t this a violation of his oath? Conflict of interest,” she asked, the Dawn reported.

Activist Asad Ali Toor wondered whether the President was using his official position to benefit his family business.

Responding to Alvi’s explanation, The Pak Daily founder Hamza Azhar Salam asked the President whether he would also attend a ceremony for his startup since he was all for supporting them, the report said.

“We started from scratch and have grown to become the fastest growing news organisation of Pakistan. Is your presence available for all sons of Pakistan or just yours,” he asked.

Hira Jaleel, a lawyer based in Lahore, said, “Since here it is the President’s son and not the President himself who is entering into an MoU, it cannot strictly be called a conflict of interest. That said, the fact that the President chose to officially publicise the event on Twitter and that it happened at the Governor House does reflect poor judgment, if not illegality. Optically, it would have been better for the President to have distanced himself from this transaction,” as per Geo News.

As per Geo News, a senior lawyer based out of Karachi, who asked not to be named, said that this is an egregious violation of basic principles of conflict of interest. Moreover, the use of Governor House and the presence of the President is illegal use of state resources and an offence under the National Accountability Bureau Ordinance, 1999, Section 9 (a) (iv).

It is also a violation of the President’s oath, which states that: “I will not allow my personal interest to influence my official conduct or my official decisions.”

Mystery behind abundance of Lithium in some evolved stars traced

For more than four decades, astronomers have known that a class of stars has an anomalous amount of Lithium on their surface…reports Asian Lite News.

Scientists have found a clue to the mystery behind the high abundance of Lithium – a trace element on Earth and a key component of rechargeable batteries – in some evolved stars.

For more than four decades, astronomers have known that a class of stars has an anomalous amount of Lithium on their surface. The reason and processes behind the high abundance of Lithium in about one percent red giants has remained a puzzle since the models of how stars evolve predict the Lithium must have been destroyed in the hot plasma of the star.

Deepak (who goes by a single name) from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bangalore, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science & Technology (DST), government of India, and Professor Emeritus David L Lambert from the University of Texas at Austin and an Honorary Fellow of IIA Bangalore, have for the first time confirmed that all the lithium-rich stars are burning helium in their core. The duo has speculated in their paper published in the journal MNRAS that lithium production is linked to the violent helium-core flash.

“About four decades ago, a red giant with extraordinarily high lithium abundance at its surface was discovered. In all other respects, this red giant was of normal composition. Early follow-up investigation of lithium among red giants showed that just about one per cent of sun-like red giants had lithium-enriched surfaces. The questions on processes that led to a 100-fold or so increase in the lithium abundance in this exceptional red giant and the reason behind this selective enrichment of lithium in the one per cent of red giants intrigued us,” Deepak explained.

The authors drew on a large survey of the compositions of red giants undertaken in Australia at the Australian National University with observations gathered on the 3.9 m Anglo-Australian Telescope at the Australian Astrophysical Observatory. The survey GALAH – named after a common Australian bird — provided a collection of about 500,000 stars with well-determined physical and chemical properties, including lithium abundances.

To find if the enrichment of lithium in red giants favours any particular mass and metallicity, they separated GALAH’s stars into different mass and metallicity ranges and then searched for lithium-rich giants among these groups. This exercise, done for the first time on such a large scale and across a wide range of mass and metallicity, reveals the rare presence of lithium-rich giants in all the Sun-like low-mass stars.

They created virtual stars of various masses and metallicity and compared the properties of these virtual stars with that of real stars from the GALAH survey. These comparisons confirmed that all the lithium-rich stars are burning helium in their core.

In a separate study, the researchers combined information about oscillations in stars’ interiors with their lithium abundances to find the origin of lithium-rich giant stars. For this study, they collected asteroseismic data (i.e., information about oscillations in stars’ interiors) for giant stars with measured lithium abundances. They found that all the lithium-rich giant stars are burning helium in their core.

MI6 head warns of China’s ‘traps’

MI6 chief Richard Moore alleged that Beijing is “trying to use influence through its debt and data traps to get people on the hook…reports Asian Lite News

MI6 chief Richard Moore has warned of China’s “debt traps and data traps” in his first live broadcast interview, BBC reported.

Mr Moore — known as “C” — told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme these traps threatened to erode sovereignty and have prompted defensive measures.

In a wide-ranging interview before he gave his first major public speech since taking on the role as head of MI6, Moore warned that China has the capability to “harvest data from around the world” and uses money to “get people on the hook”.

Speaking about the threat posed by China, Moore described its use of “debt traps and data traps”.

He said Beijing is “trying to use influence through its economic policies to try and sometimes, I think, get people on the hook”, BBC reported.

Explaining the “data trap”, he said: “If you allow another country to gain access to really critical data about your society, over time that will erode your sovereignty, you no longer have control over that data,” the report said.

“That’s something which, I think, in the UK we are very alive to and we’ve taken measures to defend against.”

Speaking later at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London, Mr Moore said China was now “the single greatest priority” for his agency and warned that a “miscalculation” by an over-confident regime in Beijing over an issue like Taiwan could pose a “serious challenge” to global peace.

He also said it was essential for the Western countries to stand up to the “full spectrum” of threats from Moscow — from state-sanctioned attacks, such as the Salisbury poisoning, to using political proxies to undermine stability in the Balkans.

Most parts of India-B’desh frontiers to be fenced by 2022: BSF

Four northeastern states — Tripura (856 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Mizoram (318 km) and Assam (263 km), share a 1,880-km border with Bangladesh…reports Asian Lite News.

The Indian authorities are trying to complete the border fencing work in most parts between the northeastern states and Bangladesh by next year to fortify the security along the international frontiers, the BSF officials said on Tuesday.

The Border Security Force (BSF) officials, on the eve of the 57th raising day of the para-military force — on Wednesday, said that smuggling of narcotics, cattle, various other contraband, apart from infiltrations are still going on along the India-Bangladesh borders, and the security personnel have successfully controlled these activities to a large extent.

Tripura frontier Inspector General Susanta Kumar Nath said that of the state’s 856 km border with Bangladesh, 67 km of patches still remained unfenced due to various reasons, and these portions would be fenced by next year.

Four northeastern states — Tripura (856 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Mizoram (318 km) and Assam (263 km), share a 1,880-km border with Bangladesh.

According to the data shared by the IPS officer, instances of illegal cross-border infiltrations have increased this year compared to last year.

The BSF in the Tripura frontier has apprehended 208 intruders attempting an illegal crossing of the international border which includes115 Indian Nationals and 93 Bangladeshi against the 131 intruders (85 Indians and 46 Bangladeshis) arrested last year.

Nath said that drugs and contrabands worth around Rs 13 crore have been seized this year.

BSF Meghalaya Frontier Principal Staff Officer D. Haokip said in Shillong that of the 444.8 km-long international border with Bangladesh in Meghalaya, fencing on a 72.2 km stretch in the Khasi Hills region is yet to start due to various reasons including land acquisition issues and riverine problems.

Claiming that cattle smuggling has drastically reduced in the Meghalaya frontier this year, Haokip said 148 people, including 59 Bangladeshis and 86 Indians, have been apprehended for trying to cross the international borders illegally in 2021.

Along the Mizoram and Cachar frontier, the BSF has apprehended 78 Indians, ten Bangladeshi nationals, and a person from Myanmar, this year.
