‘Always expect high standard during World Cup’

My expectations for England are always high. Ours fans will have high expectations — and rightly so. I feel Gareth [Southgate] has done an incredible job…speaks David Beckam.

David Beckham cannot wait for the first FIFA World Cup in the Middle East and Arab world. The Football legend, 46, has played and scored in three World Cups, and has witnessed Qatars preparations for the 22nd edition of international footballs showpiece event.

Beckham looks forward to the final draw, which will take place in Doha on 1 April, and gives a keen assessment of England’s chances heading into the tournament, outlining what fans can expect when they travel to Qatar in November and December.

The final draw for Qatar 2022 takes place this week. How exciting is this milestone for players and fans?

Beckham: It’s a really big moment and something you always look forward to as a player and fan. It’s exciting for players as you get to know who you’re coming up against and who you have to prepare for. It’s a moment for players and fans to realise that the World Cup is almost here and for the excitement to begin to build.

This is the first FIFA World Cup in the Middle East and Arab world. How important is that?

Beckham: It’s a massive moment for everyone in Qatar and very inspiring. I’ve always talked about the legacy of the World Cup for Qatar — but also the legacy of the World Cup everywhere. That’s what the World Cup brings to a nation — it’s an inspiring moment. For Qatar, it’s a chance to show off the country and its love of football, its history and culture. Having some of the biggest players in the sport descend on Qatar is a huge moment for the country and region.

It’s going to be a compact World Cup, with all the stadiums near to one another. How will this benefit the players?

Beckham: It’s a huge benefit. The furthest a team is going to have to travel is 40-45 minutes on a bus. In the World Cups I played in, it could take two or three days to recover from the game and the travelling.

The tournament will take place in November and December. For many countries, it will mean the World Cup takes place in the middle of the football season. What kind of benefits will that have?

Beckham: As an England player, we went into every World Cup after a gruelling season in the Premier League, which is one of the toughest leagues in the world. When you come to the end of the season, you’re exhausted and it takes a while to recover — more than a few weeks. This time, it will be mid-season, so this is perfect for English players — and other teams — who can go into the tournament with a real opportunity.

With many players coming in fresh, are you expecting a better standard of play during this World Cup?

Beckham: Without a doubt. You always expect a high standard during the World Cup — but coming in mid-season, the standards are going to be even higher. The weather is going to be perfect, the stadiums are amazing, the facilities are amazing, the fans are going to have a great time. It’s set up perfectly.

What are your expectations for England heading into this tournament?

Beckham: My expectations for England are always high. Ours fans will have high expectations — and rightly so. I feel Gareth [Southgate] has done an incredible job. We’ve got a team that’s been together for quite a few years. You can’t really call them a young team anymore — but many of the players are pretty young, while they also have experience in there with the likes of Harry Kane. I feel this is a real opportunity for us. We’re coming into the tournament in good form. We just have to keep that up.

Who is England’s key player?

Beckham: I would have to say Harry Kane. He’s a leader, he’s our captain and he’s our goal scorer. With him performing at the highest level, he’s massively important to our team.

England will be one of the favourites to win the tournament — but who will be their main rivals?

Beckham: When you think about the World Cup you automatically talk about Brazil, Argentina and France. They are all great nations who have won many tournaments. Another country I am excited to see play is Denmark. I think they could be the surprise package. They’ve had a good lead-up and always do pretty well in major tournaments. I’m also looking forward to seeing the host nation, Qatar. They have a young team who have been together a long time. They know each other well and I think they’ll be boosted by the atmosphere in the stadiums.

What advice would you give to players playing in their first World Cup?

Beckham: Enjoy it. The World Cup is the pinnacle. It’s the best and highest level any player can reach. My advice is to enjoy it because it might be the only one you’re involved in.

You’ve visited many stadiums here, when you walk out on the pitch, how much do you wish you were still playing?

Beckham: I’m 46 years old but I still feel I can put my boots on and play in a World Cup. Even at my age — which is not old — I still feel I could play in the Premier League or La Liga or for England. When I walk into a stadium I always want to put my boots on.

What’s your message to the fans heading to Qatar for the World Cup?

Beckham: They’re going to have a great experience. In the past, fans have had to travel between games but in Qatar, they’re going to be able to go to more than one match a day because it is such a compact tournament. I think the fans will enjoy what Qatar has to offer. There will be great food, a warm welcome from the local people and lots to see and enjoy besides the football.

Defence publishes its Zero Tolerance approach to sexual offences

The Zero Tolerance policy is one of a range of measures intended to tackle unacceptable sexual behaviour in the Armed Forces…reports Asian Lite News

As part of Defence’s commitment to crack down on unacceptable sexual behaviour and sexual offences, a new Zero Tolerance policy has been announced.

His policy aligns the Royal Navy, RAF, and Army under one approach to dealing with incidences, that will be implemented across the UK Armed Forces to enable services to better support victims and secure justice for them.

Key changes to existing policies include that those found guilty of sexual offences are to be administratively discharged from service with no option to serve elsewhere. The policy also stipulates that sexual relationships between instructors and trainees are unacceptable and will result in discharge of the instructor.

Minister for Defence People and Veterans, Leo Docherty said, “Sexual offences and sexual relationships between instructors and trainees have no place in Defence, or wider society, and a zero tolerance approach will ensure our commitment to providing a better working environment for our serving personnel is met. We are sending a clear message that the women and men of the Armed Forces must uphold our values and standards. As we set out in our response to the House of Commons Defence Committee’s Report into “Women in the Armed Forces: From Recruitment to Civilian Life”, it is a Defence-wide goal to stamp out sexual offences and ensure that the Armed Forces continues to be a place where people are proud to work and have faith in their justice system.”

The Zero Tolerance policy is one of a range of measures intended to tackle unacceptable sexual behaviour in the Armed Forces. It is intended to improve the career experiences of serving personnel, providing clearer, tri service direction to those in a position to prevent and address instances of sexual offence. We have already taken important steps to ensure that all reported offences are subject to prompt, thorough, efficient, and independent investigation. The policy also sends a clear signal to everyone in the Armed Forces that these offences will not be tolerated.

Where proven, personnel convicted of a sexual offence will be discharged from the Armed Forces.

The policy has been produced with input and consultation from a wide range of stakeholders across Defence and the Service Justice System and is just one on a number of new policies being introduced this year to stamp out unacceptable behaviours.

‘Sanctions imposed on Russia returning to West like a boomerang’

According to Medvedev, the US and EU have “tarnished their reputation” by blocking the reserves of the Russian central bank….reports Asian Lite News

A new financial order will be negotiated in the world, and the West won’t have the main say in it anymore, ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has claimed.

The “hellish” sanctions imposed on Russia by the US, EU, and their allies over the conflict in Ukraine have failed to cripple the country, but are instead “returning to the West like a boomerang,” Medvedev, the former Russian president who is now the deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, said, RT reported.

According to Medvedev, the US and EU have “tarnished their reputation” by blocking the reserves of the Russian central bank. “It is impossible to trust those who freeze the accounts of other states; steal other people’s business, assets and personal possessions, compromising the principles of sanctity of private property.”

Pic credits ec.europa.eu

After the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine in late February, the US and EU froze nearly half of Russia’s foreign currency reserves, worth $300 billion.

Confidence in reserve currencies is “fading like the morning mist,” and the prospect of abandoning the dollar and euro in this role does not seem like such an unrealistic prospect anymore, he said. “The era of regional currencies is coming.”

“No matter if they want it or not, they’ll have to negotiate a new financial order,” Medvedev said. “And the decisive voice will then be with those countries that have a strong and advanced economy, healthy public finances and a reliable monetary system. And not with those who endlessly inflate their public debt, issuing more and more pieces of paper into circulation which aren’t backed by national wealth.”

Stalin meets Modi, demands PLI scheme for footwear industry

During his meeting with the Prime Minister, Stalin submitted a memorandum listing out the various demands of the state….reports Asian Lite News

The necessity for a Production-linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for the footwear manufacturing sector; setting up of a Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) lab in the state; supply of coal in adequate quantity as agreed; and sharing of cess and surcharge with the states were some of the demands raised by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin during his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital on Thursday.

During his meeting with the Prime Minister, Stalin submitted a memorandum listing out the various demands of the state.

Stalin said Tamil Nadu is a dominant player in the footwear industry at both the national and global level, accounting for 26 per cent of the national manufacturing output and 45 per cent of the national exports.

A PLI scheme for footwear manufacturing will increase the productivity of the existing players and make India the most-favoured destination for footwear exporters.

Further, the PLI scheme will aid in import substitution for input products such as ornaments, zippers, soles, buckles, and embellishments, Stalin said.

Citing the 1,507.23 acre excess land with the Salem Steel Plant, Stalin urged the Central government to transfer the same so that it can be used for a Defence Industrial Park.

Pointing out the shortfall in the supply of coal for thermal plants by Coal India, Stalin said the Ministry of Power/Ministry of Coal may be requested to allocate 4.2 million tonne per annum of coal from the Singareni Collieries Company Limited.

Stalin also urged Modi that the Central government should reverse the levy of cesses and surcharges and all such cesses and surcharges must be merged with the basic rate of tax, so that the states receive their legitimate share of the revenue.

Punjab CM deleted data before vacating office

Most of the deleted information were related to directives issued by the Chief Minister and records of the Chief Minister’s discretionary grant, worth millions of rupees…reports Asian Lite News

Before vacating the office of Pakistan Punjab Chief Minister, Usman Buzdar reportedly ordered his staff to conduct a “midnight operation” to delete all data from the computers of additional secretaries and deputy secretaries of the CM Secretariat, Friday Times reported.

Most of the deleted information were related to directives issued by the Chief Minister and records of the Chief Minister’s discretionary grant, worth millions of rupees, according to a report by The News.

Usman Buzdar tendered his resignation, clearing the post for Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PLM-Q)’s Pervaiz Elahi, who the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) hope will help the government defeat the no-confidence motion moved against Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Upon his departure, it also emerged that the Principal Secretary to Chief Minister, Amir Jan, occupied three senior positions, and presumably received salaries for each.

He served as Principal Secretary to the CM, Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) of the Punjab Energy Department, and Energy Secretary. As the Principal Secretary, he was responsible for monitoring the ACS Energy. Amir Jan was effectively his own boss.

Usman Buzdar had appointed and dismissed four principal secretaries in three-and-a-half years before hiring Amir Jan, who has also served as ACS for the better part of a year.

Interestingly, the Punjab Energy Department, in which Jan was the ACS, is reportedly one of the more well resourced and rich department, with procurements worth multi-billions of rupees.

Imran chairs NSC meeting ahead of no-trust motion

The development comes a day after it became clear that the Pak Prime Minister had lost his majority in the National Assembly (NA) following the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan’s decision to withdraw support…reports Asian Lite News

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has summoned a meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) on Thursday, Pak Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said, Dawn reported.

The NSC, which is the highest forum for coordination on security issues, is chaired by the Prime Minister and includes key federal ministers, the national security adviser, services chiefs and top intelligence officials.

The development comes a day after it became clear that the Pak Prime Minister had lost his majority in the National Assembly (NA) following the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan’s (MQM-P) decision to support the joint opposition in the no-trust resolution against the Prime Minister.

A key ally of the PTI government at the Centre, the MQM has seven seats in the NA and after its decision to part ways with the government, the opposition has gathered the support of 177 MNAs, five more than the 172 required to gain a majority.

On Wednesday, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) met PM Imran Khan twice after which some ministers claimed that neither the premier had been asked to resign nor would he opt for it.

On Sunday, during his party’s public rally, the Pak PM brandished a ‘secret letter’ as evidence of a “foreign conspiracy” to oust him, asking his party dissidents, as well as disgruntled allies, to change their minds and avoid becoming part of a “foreign plot” against him.

Pakistani Taliban gear up for Ramadan offensive

The call for a fresh offensive has come in the wake of a recent surge in terror attacks by TTP terrorists against Pakistani security forces….reports Asian Lite News

A fresh wave of terror attacks is geared up to strike Pakistani security forces with full force as the Pakistani Taliban have announced the launch of their spring offensive — ‘Al-Badr’ — during the holy Islamic month of Ramadan.

In a statement, the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesperson Mohammad Khurasani said, “The spring offensive will begin on the first day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and will target security forces and their collaborators.”

“This mission will include martyrdom (suicide) operations, ambush attacks, mine operations, counter-attacks, target attacks, laser and sniper operations,” he added.

The call for a fresh offensive has come in the wake of a recent surge in terror attacks by TTP terrorists against Pakistani security forces.

In the most recent, at least six Pakistani soldiers embraced martyrdom during a major attack targeted at an Frontier Corps (FC) fort in Tank district of Khyber Pukhtunkhwa (KP) province.

The attack was part of a chain of a much bigger offensive planned to target the capital Islamabad and the surrounding areas of Tank district.

Pakistani security forces had arrested at least four TTP terrorists from Shakarpariyan area of Islamabad on March 28 and 29, while four more terrorists were arrested from Lakki Marwat, a critical area close to the South Waziristan region, attached with Tank district and about 40 km from Bannu and North Waziristan’s Miranshah.

TTP has stepped up its attacks in Pakistan since the Taliban take over of Afghanistan. It is considered as an umbrella organisation of the Afghan Taliban and has been operating in Pakistan in line with the directives from the Afghan Taliban.

It is pertinent to mention that Afghan Taliban had facilitated negotiations between Pakistan and the TTP last year, which resulted in coming to a month-long ceasefire agreement. However, the agreement collapsed after TTP accused Pakistan of not abiding by the terms of the agreement.

Pakistan secret delegation held talks with TTP, Haqqani network

Is has been reported that TTP has demanded Pakistan to allow its militants to return to Pakistan, especially after Afghan Taliban directed foreign fighters to return to their respective countries and leave Afghanistan.

Attempts have been made recently to cross over from Afghanistan into Pakistan which have been foiled by the Pakistani security forces, engaging in deadly clashes with the TTP militants.

TTP has claimed many attacks in Pakistan, which have killed dozens of Pakistani soldiers with injuries to many more.

TTP’s announcement of a Ramadan spring offensive comes at a time when Prime Minister Imran Khan is faced with a major challenge by the opposition parties, who want to de-seat him through a no-confidence motion, to be voted in the National Assembly of Pakistan in the coming days.
