Opposition hits out at BJP

Leaders of SP, BSP and Congress say allege BJP of trying to break opposition parties and undermine democratically elected state governments…reports Asian Lite News

Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav came out hard against the BJP accusing the party of being nervous about the INDIA bloc and breaking other parties. Yadav has vowed action against rebel MLAs who cross-voted for the BJP in the Rajya Sabha elections.

“Action will be taken against them as per the rules. They won by defeating BJP and now what answer will they give to those voters?… They used to give us information about BJP-RSS. We are sad that who will give us this information now… Our family is expanding and because of this BJP is nervous and is breaking other parties. BJP should form a new faction – BJP Sidhantheen,” Akhilesh Yadav said.

In the Rajya Sabha elections, the BJP won 8 of the 10 seats that went to the polls while the SP won two seats. The contest was affected after the BJP put up an eighth candidate in former RS MP Sanjay Seth who finally emerged victorious after 7 SP MLAs cross-voted.

BSP MP cries foul

Meanwhile, BSP’s Lok Sabha MP Danish Ali said that it was for the first time in India that the ruling party was saying that they would get 400 seats, but on the other hand, they are working to break the opposition parties. Danish Ali also mentioned that these types of things are not good for democracy and the country’s politics.

“This is happening for the first time in the politics of the country. On one side, the ruling party is saying that they will be at 400, but on the other hand, they are working to break the opposition parties. The ruling party has formed a committee, and these people are responsible for seeing who will do cross-voting and who will break the MLAs of other parties. This is not good for Indian politics or Indian democracy,” he said.

Congress leaders call out BJP

Meanwhile, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra slammed the BJP, saying that the party that ‘did not stand with the state during natural disaster, is now pushing it into the political one’.

“In democracy, the general public has the right to choose the government of their choice. The people of Himachal used this right and formed the Congress government with a clear majority. But the BJP wants to crush this right of the people of Himachal by misusing the power of money, agencies and the Centre. The way the BJP is using government security and machinery for this purpose is unprecedented in the history of the country. The BJP, which did not stand with the people of the state during the natural disaster, now wants to push the state into political disaster,” Priyanka said.

She further said that if a party with 25 MLAs is challenging the majority of 43 MLAs, then it clearly means that ‘it is dependent on the horse-trading of representatives’.

“This attitude of the BJP is unethical and unconstitutional. The people of Himachal and the country are watching everything,” she added.

Amid the political turmoil, Congress leaders and observers for Himachal Pradesh, DK Shivakumar and Bhupinder Singh Hooda, rushed to Shimla on Wednesday to parley with members of the party, which is facing a loss of support and risks losing power in the state.

Shivakumar in a post on X, expressed his confidence that Congress rebel MLAs will stay ‘loyal’ to the party and stay put with the mandate that has been accorded to them

“As per the directions of the Congress high command, I am reaching Himachal Pradesh. Also there is absolutely no need to indulge in any hearsay, as I am confident that Congress Party legislators will be loyal to the party and stay put with the mandate that has been accorded to them,” Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister said.

In fresh trouble for the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh, Vikramaditya Singh, a state minister and the son of the former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh on Wednesday stepped down from his position.

“All I would like to say is that under the current circumstances, it is not correct for me to continue as a part of the government. So, I have decided that I am resigning from the Council of Ministers. I am resigning as a minister,” Singh said.

Amid the political turmoil in Himachal Pradesh after cross-voting by six Congress MLAs during polling for the lone Rajya Sabha seat from the state on Tuesday, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Wednesday said all fellow party leaders were like his younger siblings, adding, significantly, that his party believes in ‘forgiveness’, and not ‘revenge’.

Assuring that the Congress government will fulfil the mandate of the people and complete its tenure of five years, CM Sukhu told reporters, ” Hum toh sab ko maaf karne wale log hai, hum badle ki bhavna se kaam karne wale log nahi hain (We believe in forgiveness, not revenge.) All fellow members of my party are like my younger brothers and sisters. Our government will complete its full 5-year term.”

On state minister Vikramaditya Singh’s resignation, the chief minister said, “Vikramaditya Singh is my younger brother and I have spoken to him.”

NATO has no plans to send troops to Ukraine, says Stoltenberg

French President Emmanuel Macron said Monday that sending Western troops on the ground in Ukraine should not be “ruled out” in the future, as Russia’s full-scale invasion grinds into a third year…reports Asian Lite News

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has said that the military alliance has no plans to send combat troops into Ukraine amid reports that some Western countries may be considering putting boots on the ground in the war-ravaged country.

Stoltenberg said that “NATO allies are providing unprecedented support to Ukraine. We have done that since 2014 and stepped up after the full-scale invasion. But there are no plans for NATO combat troops on the ground in Ukraine”.

Ahead of a trip to Paris on Monday, where top officials from over 20 countries discussed options to increase help for Ukraine, Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico said that some countries are weighing whether to strike bilateral deals to send troops to Ukraine to help it fend off the Russian invasion.

Fico said that his government is not planning to propose to send Slovak soldiers, but did not provide details about what countries might be considering such deals, or what the troops would do in Ukraine. Slovak Parliament speaker Peter Pellegrini said Slovakia won’t deploy troops to Ukraine.

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala declined to comment before leaving for Paris, saying the leaders were meeting to discuss possible options, but he underlined that “the Czech Republic certainly doesn’t want to send its soldiers to Ukraine”.

French President Emmanuel Macron said Monday that sending Western troops on the ground in Ukraine should not be “ruled out” in the future, as Russia’s full-scale invasion grinds into a third year.

While ruling out NATO military action, Stoltenberg told AP “that this is a war of aggression by Russia against Ukraine, blatantly violating international law. According to international law, Ukraine of course has the right to self-defence, and we have the right to support them in upholding that right”.

NATO as an alliance provides Ukraine only non-lethal aid and support like medical supplies, uniforms and winter equipment, but some members send weapons and ammunition bilaterally or in groups. Any decision to send troops would require unanimous support from all member countries.

S. Korea and US Gear Up For Major Military Drills

The upcoming drills, named Freedom Shield, encompass a blend of computer-simulated command post training and various field exercises, scheduled from March 4 to 14….reports Asian Lite News

South Korean and U.S. forces are gearing up for their annual military drills, slated to begin next week, in response to North Korea’s persistent nuclear threats. The joint exercises, a routine affair for the allies, are expected to provoke ire from Pyongyang, which views them as rehearsals for invasion.

In recent months, North Korea has intensified tensions with aggressive rhetoric and ongoing missile tests, heightening concerns across the Korean Peninsula. While a full-scale attack is deemed unlikely, experts warn of potential limited provocations along the tense border with South Korea.

The upcoming drills, named Freedom Shield, encompass a blend of computer-simulated command post training and various field exercises, scheduled from March 4 to 14. According to Col Lee Sung-Jun, a spokesperson for South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff, the exercises aim to enhance joint capabilities to deter North Korea from nuclear aggression. This year’s drills will notably include air assault, live-fire, and bombing training, with 48 field exercises planned—twice the number held last year.

Both South Korean and U.S. military officials assert the defensive nature of the exercises, emphasizing their role in maintaining deterrence. Col Isaac L Taylor, representing the U.S. military, highlights the importance of readiness in deterring potential aggression.

Despite the announcement, North Korea has yet to respond. However, history suggests Pyongyang may respond with its own missile tests, a pattern seen in reaction to previous South Korea-U.S. military exercises.

North Korea’s accelerated weapons testing, including multiple missile launches this year, underscores its ongoing efforts to bolster its nuclear and missile capabilities. South Korea’s military spokesperson, Mr. Lee, notes that the upcoming drills will include training to detect and intercept North Korean cruise missiles, further underscoring the region’s precarious security landscape.

Lula: Biden Vital for U.S. Democracy’s Survival

Lula’s comments come amid expectations that Biden will face former President Donald Trump in a November rematch….reports Asian Lite News

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed his hope for U.S. President Joe Biden’s re-election, citing Biden’s role in safeguarding democracy globally and in the United States.

“Although I am not a U.S. voter, I think it’s obvious that Biden is a greater guarantee for the survival of democracy in the world and the United States,” Lula told local TV channel RedeTV.

Lula’s comments come amid expectations that Biden will face former President Donald Trump in a November rematch. Lula, known for defeating Jair Bolsonaro, akin to Trump, in Brazil’s presidential race, hailed Biden for his advocacy of workers’ rights, citing their strong rapport.

Both leaders initiated efforts to enhance workers’ rights and promote greener energy, underscoring their collaboration in the Global Biofuel Alliance. However, tensions arose over Gaza, with Lula accusing Israel of genocide against Palestinians, a stance rebuked by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Biden previously supported Lula during a crisis in Brazil when Bolsonaro’s supporters stormed government institutions, evoking comparisons to the U.S. Capitol invasion under Trump.

Lula frequently draws parallels between Bolsonaro and Trump, labelling Bolsonaro as a “copy” of the former U.S. leader. Biden’s stance as a defender of democracy aligns with Lula’s hopes for global stability and democratic resilience.

Bolsonaro denies coup plot

Jair Bolsonaro, the former President of Brazil, led a massive rally in Sao Paulo on Sunday, vehemently denying accusations of involvement in a coup plot to cling to power, CNN reported.

Thousands of Bolsonaro’s supporters, adorned in the green and gold of Brazil’s national flag, gathered on Paulista Avenue, a key thoroughfare in the nation’s largest city, to express solidarity amid growing legal challenges.

Last week, the far-right populist used social media platform X to call for the protest rally, framing it as a “defence of the democratic rule of law.” Bolsonaro is currently under investigation by the Brazilian Federal Police regarding an alleged coup attempt aimed at retaining power after losing the 2022 presidential election, as confirmed by his lawyer in early February. Former ministers from Bolsonaro’s government are also under scrutiny, and some aides have been arrested, according to CNN.

Despite the mounting legal pressure, Bolsonaro, speaking on Sunday, maintained that he is a target of persecution, refraining from directly mentioning the investigating institutions. In 2022, Brazil’s highest electoral court barred Bolsonaro from seeking political office until 2030, citing abuses of power and misuse of public media during the election campaign.

Following Bolsonaro’s narrow defeat to leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, his supporters rioted and breached government buildings in Brasilia on January 8, 2023. Bolsonaro, however, denies any role in inciting the violent attacks in the capital. During Sunday’s rally, he called for parliamentary amnesty for those imprisoned in Brasilia in connection with the January 8 disturbances.

Bolsonaro was seen waving an Israeli flag during the rally, a move intended as opposition to Lula da Silva.

The former president had previously drawn controversy by comparing Israel’s offensive on Gaza to the Holocaust. The political atmosphere in Brazil remains charged, with Bolsonaro using public appearances to rally his base amid the ongoing investigations and legal challenges, CNN reported.

McConnell to Step Down as Republican Leader in Senate

Having achieved the distinction of becoming the longest-serving Senate party leader in history in 2023, McConnell has played a pivotal role in shaping Republican politics….reports Asian Lite News

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced on Wednesday his decision to step down from the GOP leadership position in the Senate come November, signalling the conclusion of a significant era on Capitol Hill and initiating a consequential race for his successor, CNN reported.

McConnell, a stalwart figure in Washington, DC, 82, expressed that “the end of my contributions are closer than I prefer.”

Despite stepping down from the leadership role, McConnell affirmed his commitment to serving in the US Senate, emphasising the importance of allowing “the next generation of leadership” to assume control of the Senate Republican Conference.

Having achieved the distinction of becoming the longest-serving Senate party leader in history in 2023, McConnell has played a pivotal role in shaping Republican politics.

However, recent months have seen internal discord within his party, particularly concerning additional US funding for the war in Ukraine. Additionally, McConnell’s strained relationship with the GOP’s presidential frontrunner, Donald Trump, has been evident, with reports indicating that the two had not spoken in over three years, as reported by CNN.

In his floor remarks, McConnell reflected on his decision, stating, “As I have been thinking about when I would deliver some news to the Senate, I always imagined a moment when I had total clarity and peace about the sunset of my work. A moment when I am certain I have helped preserve the ideals I so strongly believe. That day arrived today.”

The announcement garnered a standing ovation, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer approached McConnell to extend congratulations, symbolising a rare moment of bipartisan recognition.

Throughout his tenure as Senate majority leader during former President Donald Trump’s administration, McConnell played a crucial role in guiding three Trump-nominated Supreme Court justices to confirmation–Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett. His influence also extended to the confirmation of numerous conservative judges to the federal bench, significantly impacting the federal judiciary.

Despite these accomplishments, McConnell’s relationship with Trump has been marked by significant disagreements. Following the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021, McConnell attributed blame to Trump for provoking the attack. However, during the subsequent impeachment proceedings, McConnell voted to acquit Trump of inciting an insurrection. McConnell, typically aligned with Trump during his presidency, led the Senate’s certification of the presidential election that the Capitol rioters sought to overturn and strongly condemned the violence, according to CNN.

McConnell’s decision to step down comes amidst health concerns, including a concussion in March following a fall in a Washington, DC hotel. Subsequent episodes, where McConnell appeared to briefly freeze up while speaking with reporters, raised questions about his fitness to lead the Senate Republican Conference.

Explaining the timing of his decision, McConnell cited the recent tragedy of his wife Elaine Chao’s youngest sister, Angela, who died in a traffic accident earlier this month.

He emphasised the introspection accompanying the grieving process, stating, “Perhaps it is God’s way of reminding you of your own life’s journey to reprioritize the impact of the world that we will all inevitably leave behind.”

Acknowledging his wife of 31 years, McConnell referred to her as the “love of my life” and expressed eternal gratitude for her companionship. Concluding his speech, McConnell assured his critics that he still had “enough gas in my tank to thoroughly disappoint,” pledging to maintain his active role as a thorn in their side.

The announcement has now set the stage for a closely-watched race for McConnell’s successor, with three prominent Senate Republicans–John Thune, John Cornyn, and John Barrasso–emerging as potential candidates. Barrasso, referring to the upcoming election, emphasized that his focus was on securing the presidency, the Senate, and the House, while Thune and Cornyn sidestepped questions about their potential candidature.

Rick Scott of Florida, a vocal critic of McConnell, remained non-committal about running for Republican leader, stating that his primary focus was on reelection as his Senate term concludes this year, CNN reported. (ANI)

Sweet Smell of Success

King of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan is often associated with perfumes that depict his charismatic and gentlemanly aura whereas there are celebrities like Kareena Kapoor Khan who associate themselves with brands that resonate with their royal and classy persona…reports Asian Lite News

From Bollywood icons to music superstars, celebrities have long been associated with fragrance endorsements, leveraging their influence and fame to form consumer preferences and drive conversion sales in the fragrance industry.

Aditya Yadav, Brand Manager at Denver for Men, asserts, “In the world of fragrances, celebrities wield unparalleled influence. Their endorsement not only elevates brand visibility but also resonates with consumers, creating an aspirational allure.”

Each fragrance is crafted with precision, reflecting the sophistication and charisma synonymous with celebrity culture. Rahul Sharma, Brand Manager at Vanesa, concurs, stating, “Celebrity perfumes embody a captivating blend of glamour and personal branding. By aligning with celebrity identities, fragrance brands tap into the emotional connection consumers have with their favourite stars, forging lasting impressions in the competitive market.”

Let’s take a look into the effect of celebrity endorsements on fragrance sales, explore key developments in the industry, and examine the underlying motivations in the back of celebrities venturing into the world of perfumery.

The Power of Celebrity Endorsements in Perfume Sales

The phenomenon of celebrity-recommended perfumes has become omnipresent in today’s market, with countless A-listers lending their names and images to leaders for fragrance campaigns. But what precisely is the appealing factor of celebrity endorsements, and how do they affect fragrance sales?

Research suggests that celebrity endorsements can have a significant impact on the buying behaviour of the audience because they tap into the emotional connections individuals have with their favourite celebrities.

King of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan is often associated with perfumes that depict his charismatic and gentlemanly aura whereas there are celebrities like Kareena Kapoor Khan who associate themselves with brands that resonate with their royal and classy persona.

Customers are more likely to perceive the product positively and associate it with the glamour and appeal of their idol. This emotional resonance plays a vital role in the purchase choice, as buyers are interested in fragrances that evoke feelings of admiration and desire.

In addition, celebrity endorsements help differentiate products in an increasingly competitive market and offer manufacturers a unique promotional proposition that sets them apart from their competitors. By leveraging celebrities’ mega-star power and mass appeal, fragrance brands can successfully capture the attention of buyers and generate buzz around their merchandise, which ultimately translates into accelerated revenue and market share.

Key Trends in the Fragrance Industry

Personalisation: The upward push of customised fragrances tailored to personal alternatives and existence is reshaping the market. Brands provide customisable fragrance alternatives that allow consumers to create precise blends that resonate with their personalities. Custom fragrance profiling offers are gaining recognition where buyers undergo consultations to discover their fragrance choices based entirely on their character traits, choices, and experiences.

Sustainability Practices: Environmental sustainability has emerged as a pressing issue in the fragrance industry, forcing brands to adopt environmentally friendly practices throughout the product’s lifecycle. From sustainable sourcing of raw materials to biodegradable packaging, manufacturers favor environmentally friendly practices to minimize their ecological footprint and appeal to environmentally conscious customers.

Experience with Digital Fragrances: Virtual fragrance consultations and sampling apps are gaining traction, allowing consumers to discover and enjoy fragrances from the comfort of their own homes. Augmented reality (AR) and Virtual reality (VR) technology are creating immersive digital experiences that simulate the sensory aspects of fragrance to aid in online shopping decisions.

Wellness-pushed Scents: Fragrances infused with wellness components which include essential oils and aromatherapy blends are gaining traction as clients prioritize holistic well-being. Brands are incorporating substances recognized for their mood-boosting and stress-relieving properties, aligning with the growing trend of self-care and mental well-being.

But the question lies why do celebrities release perfumes?

Brand Extension: For celebrities, liberating perfumes gives a beneficial opportunity to extend their brand beyond their expertise, allowing them to capitalize on their fame and influence.

Personal Branding: Perfumes serve as a tangible illustration of a celebrity’s personality and image. Personal branding allows them to connect with fanatics on a deeper emotional level and similarly solidify their logo identification.

Financial Incentives: The monetary incentives associated with celebrity perfume deals are regularly substantial and provide celebrities with a profitable source of income outside of their primary profession.

Ultimately, the impact of celebrities on the perfume business is clear, as their famous persona shapes customer alternatives and utilizes income. Through strategic endorsements and private label efforts, celebrities use their image to create captivating fragrances that resonate with lovers around the world. As the fragrance industry continues to adapt, celebrities remain indispensable players, maintaining the symbiotic relationship between fame and perfume. With their ability to command both hearts and noses, celebrities leave an indelible mark on the ever-changing panorama of fragrance.

‘Gaza In Our Hearts’ Ramadan Campaign Launched

Dubai Cares’ Ramadan campaign recognises the increasingly depleting supply of necessities needed by the people of Gaza, as well as the heightened sentiment of compassion among the UAE community….reports Asian Lite News

Dubai Cares, a civil society organisation formally associated with the United Nations Department of Global Communications, has launched “Gaza In Our Hearts”, a Ramadan fundraising campaign that mobilises the UAE community to raise vital funds for the provision of the emergency relief for the people of Gaza.

The campaign recognises the increasingly depleting supply of necessities needed by the people of Gaza, as well as the heightened sentiment of compassion among the UAE community, and a shared desire to extend more support.

Building upon the ongoing success of the UAE’s “Tarahum for Gaza” initiative, the campaign will raise funds for concrete emergency support, with all donations going towards the delivery of hot meals, food baskets, as well as waterproof and fire-resistant tents.

To ensure the prompt and efficient supply of this emergency relief, Dubai Cares has entered into a strategic partnership with its longstanding partner, Anera (American Near East Refugee Aid). As the implementing partner, Anera will work closely with UN, diplomatic and non-governmental organisation partners to open aid corridors to enable it to urgently deliver life-saving aid.

Speaking about the significance of the campaign, Dr. Tariq Al Gurg, Chief Executive Officer and Vice-Chairman of Dubai Cares, said: “The UAE’s response to the war in Gaza was immediate, with the entire country, including the UAE government, charitable and philanthropic organisations, businesses, and the wider community, joining efforts to provide life-saving aid. With the conflict entering its sixth month, access to food and shelter has become critically low, leaving many Gazans facing severe food insecurity reaching catastrophic levels.

Through the ‘Gaza In Our Hearts’ campaign, we are providing members of the community the opportunity to unite and respond to this urgent need with a sense of responsibility and empowerment. We hope that through this campaign and our strategic partnership with Anera, we will not only alleviate hunger and suffering, but also nurture hope, resilience, and dignity.”

Members of the community can directly contribute to this campaign by:

Donating via SMS by texting the word “donation” to 9030, 9090, 9300, 9600 and 9900 to donate AED 30, AED 90, AED 300, AED 600 or AED 900 respectively through Etisalat by e& and du

Making online donations at www.dubaicares.ae

Launching their own campaign on the Dubai Cares crowdfunding platform: https://fundraising.dubaicares.ae/

Making a direct financial donation through bank deposit to Dubai Cares’ account or with a cheque addressed to Dubai Cares

Sean C. Carroll, President and CEO of Anera said: “At this crucial time, going into the holy month of Ramadan, we know people are looking to meet critical humanitarian needs and have a positive impact in Gaza. With support from the people of the UAE, through our strategic partnership with Dubai Cares, and our on-the-ground capacity in Gaza, Anera will ensure that all donations go to where they are needed most.

Since October 7, Anera has delivered nearly 20 million meals in Gaza, and with your support we will deliver at least 5 million more during Ramadan. We will not stop there; we will keep working to meet emergency needs and eventually witness recovery and reconstruction.”

Gaza Faces Imminent Famine

A senior aid official of a UN body has warned that a quarter of the population of the war-trodden Gaza is one step away from an imminent famine.

According to reports available from the United Nations’ aid agencies in Gaza, Rajesh Rajasingham, director of coordination for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, has informed the UN Security Council on the danger awaiting the strip in the days to come.

The senior UN aid official has informed the Security Council that nearly, 5,76,000 people in the Gaza Strip are facing hunger and famine. He has also warned that widespread famine could be almost inevitable if proper action was not taken.

He said that one in six children under 2 years of age in northern Gaza is suffering from acute malnutrition. The official added that all the 2.3 million people in the Palestinian enclave rely on “woefully inadequate” food aid to survive.

The World Food Programme (WFP) Deputy Executive Director, Carl Skau, told the 15-member council that it was ready to swiftly expand and scale-up the operations if there is a ceasefire agreement.

The WFP official has also informed that the risk of famine was being fueled by the inability to bring critical food supplies into Gaza in sufficient quantities.

The UN official has also said that the operating conditions faced by the WFP staff on the ground was on almost impossible conditions.

Meanwhile, UN officials said that 75 ton of freight, 10 ambulances, food rations, 300 family tents, etc, had arrived in el-Arish airport in Egypt, near the Rafah crossing to Gaza.

Dastaan Live: A Musical Journey Through the Voices of Masters

Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Sahir Ludhianvi, Majaaz, Nazeer Akbarabadi, Baba Nagarjuna, Paash and Kabir — ‘Dastaan Live’, an independent music band, does not believe in taking the convenient/safe road out, instead uses the words of these masters to reflect on the contemporary social realities.

Perhaps the reason that in recent times, this band has earned a cult following.

With 11 members – five vocalists, three percussionists and three guitarists — ‘Dastaan Live’ primarily works with music, poetry, visual art, lighting design and performance art, with music at its core.

They also incorporated puppetry in their music video of ‘Mat Ro Bachche’.

“For us, it is paramount to constantly challenge ourselves by incorporating varied genres and forms,” band co-founder Anirban Ghosh tells IANS.

The inaugural show of the project, titled ‘Surviving Democracy’, was conceptualised by Anirban Ghosh (Baan G), Nikhil Vasudevan and Sumant Balakrishnan in 2016, and since 2018, they have carefully chosen content that is in line with their critical and political work.

Ghosh, who also teaches at Ashoka University, and runs an NGO along with his partner at the Nizamuddin slums in Delhi, says that only those people inclined with their social and political ideas come on board, and that is the reason their music works.

“Most of us are interdisciplinary artistes. The genres they practice are just ‘byproducts’ — it is primarily the thought that matters. We are consistently pushing boundaries, and the project strives to enhance audience immersion, fostering dialogues, interpretations, and, above all, inspiring critical thinking,” adds Ghosh.

The band which was in Amritsar for the ‘Sacred Amritsar 2024’, presented by Sleepwell and produced by Teamwork Arts, staged their ‘rock opera’ – ‘Kabira Khada Bazaar Mein’, written by Bhisham Sahni and originally staged by theatre director M.K. Raina to critical acclaim. The show re-interprets the music of the play, retaining its core aesthetics and updating the arrangement and instrumentation for modern sensibilities.

“While Kabir is seen as a saint-seer, let us not forget that he asked very uncomfortable questions. We have always believed that the arts must raise pertinent inquiries and respond to what is going on around us. Anant Raina, who is a filmmaker, has come on board for this,” says Ghosh.

But are they not apprehensive about putting out critical content?

He says, “There will always be people uneasy with the kind of themes we work on. But it is important to speak out.”

Believing that it is important to have spaces where younger artistes across genres can push the envelope without the roadblocks that are synonymous with the market-driven arts ecosystem, Ghosh feels community arts may be the solution.

Even as several major independent bands continue to feel financial heat, the musician stresses the situation is no different for them.

However, accepting corporate funding and grants also means that their content gets compromised.

“And this is something we do not want to do.”

Planning an album, the group will be taking the Kabira show to different cities across the country.

“Kabir needs to be listened to more, much more by everybody,” he concludes.
