The Tiruchirappalli Police denied permission for a roadshow planned on Sunday for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president JP Nadda in the city.

The BJP leader said that they’ll meet the police commissioner to seek permission for the roadshow.

Earlier in the day, the BJP chief addressed a public rally in Tamil Nadu’s Ariyalur, and said that under the leadership of PM Modi, India took a long leap in development.

Nadda called upon the people of Tamil Nadu to ensure PM Narendra Modi’s return as Prime Minister for a third term and make India the world’s third-largest economy.

“Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country has taken a long leap in development. India was the 11th economic power in the world in 2019. But even after the pandemic of COVID and the Ukraine war, under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Modi, India has defeated Great Britain, which ruled us for 200 years. And now India is the fifth-largest economy in the world,” the BJP president said.

“In 2024, when PM Modi will become the Prime Minister for the third time, India will become the third largest economy in the world,” he added.

Nadda further said that in the electronics sector, India’s production and exports have increased six times.

“In the electronics sector, our production and exports have increased six times. In 2014, you used to carry a mobile phone that used to be made in China. Today, you are carrying a mobile phone that says, ‘Made in India’. 97 per cent of mobiles are being produced and manufactured in India,” he said.

Voting for all 39 seats in Tamil Nadu will be held in the first phase of the general elections on April 19.

In the 2019 general elections, the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, comprising the Congress, VCK, MDMK, CPI, CPI(M), IUML, MMK, KMDK, TVK, AIFB, registered a landslide victory, winning 38 of the 39 seats in the state.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Minister and DMK youth wing secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin on Thursday campaigned for Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s (MDMK) Tiruchirappalli candidate Durai Vaiko for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Meanwhile, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on Thursday registered a complaint with the Election Commission of India against DMK leader Udayanidhi Stalin accusing the Tamil Nadu Minister of violating the model code of conduct. AIADMK accused Udayanidhi Stalin of using hate speech and wooing women voters during his election campaign.

“Udayanidhi Stalin made hate speech in his election campaign. Secondly, he has tried to influence women voters by saying he will give Rs 1000 monthly to leftover women in Tamil Nadu within 4 months after the election. It is a government scheme. He is trying to influence the voters by making false promises and misusing the minister’s post in the election campaign,” AIADMK leader IS Inbadurai said.

AIADMK has asked the poll body to intervene in the matter and take action within 48 hours in the matter.

“If EC is not taking any action on our complaint ten we will approach court on it,” he said.

The Model Code of Conduct is in effect after the schedule for the Lok Sabha elections was announced by the Election Commission of India on March 16.

All 39 seats of Tamil Nadu will poll in the first phase of the general elections on April 19 and the counting of votes, along with those from other phases, has been scheduled for June 4.

In 2019, the DMK swept the Lok Sabha polls in the state, winning 23 Lok Sabha seats and bagging the lion’s share of the total votes polled, at 33.2 per cent. Its ruling ally, Congress, bagged 8 seats, mining 12.9 per cent of the total votes polled, while the CPI won two seats. CPI (M) and IUML won one seat each while the remaining two seats went to Independents.

The elections to 543 Lok Sabha seats in the country will be held in seven phases, starting April 19. Nearly 97 crore voters are eligible to get their fingers inked this time. (ANI)

Stop mocking Dravidian model: Kamal Haasan

Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief Kamal Haasan reiterated his call for a Dravidian Model of governance on Sunday, emphasising the need for a system that doesn’t discriminate based on caste, colour or language.

“Don’t make fun of Dravidian Model. Dravidam was always here. It is spread across the nation. Dravidian Model is what India needs. Good governance that doesn’t discriminate against caste, colour, language or religion is important,” Haasan said during an election event in Chennai.

MNM is an alliance partner of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu.

He also criticised the central government for not releasing funds for the metro rail project in Tamil Nadu.

“For the metro rail project phase 2, we need Rs 68,000 crore, the central government said they will give it, but Tamil Nadu has not yet received the funds,” the MNM chief said.

The actor-turned-politician also urged the people to vote for ‘someone’ who will stand for people’s rights’.

“I came here for our rights; I have joined DMK alliance for our country’s sake. Acting in my occupation and politics is my right. People don’t like only good people; they want someone who stand for their rights. Not someone who visits them during election times. TR Baalu was here, he comes here at all times. At the time of floods, we were here and helped the people,” Haasan said.

Haasan campaigned for the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s candidate from Sriperumbudur Lok Sabha constituency, TR Baalu, earlier in the day.

He also held a roadshow along with TR Baalu in the Nanganallur area of Chennai.

Apart from MNM, a huge number of party cadres from DMK’s alliance partners, including Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK), also attended the campaign event.
