Biden resumes negative campaign ads against Trump

After Trump announced on October 2 that he and the First Lady had tested positive for the virus, the Biden campaign revealed that it was taking down the negative ads….Reports Asian Lite News

The campaign of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden announced that it has planned to restart negative digital and TV ads against US President Donald Trump after his return to the White House following his Covid-19 diagnosis, it was reported.

In a statement to The Hill news website on Wednesday, Michael Gwin, deputy rapid response director for the former Vice President’s campaign, said that while the team “has always been about making the positive case for Joe Biden”, “there’s a stark contrast between Vice President Biden and Donald Trump and their visions for our country”.

“We’re going to continue to make a full throated case for Vice President Biden and we will forcefully correct the record when Trump attacks and lies,” Gwin added.

After Trump announced on October 2 that he and the First Lady had tested positive for the virus, the Biden campaign revealed that it was taking down the negative ads.

But after spending just three night at the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, Trump was back at the White House on Monday evening and even removed his mask before entering the building.

Trump also reportedly worked from the Oval Office on Wednesday, as his doctor said he was feeling “great” and experiencing no symptoms, The Hill news website reported.

The Biden campaign ran ads contrasting Biden and the President more than 7,000 times, with negative ads running 324 times on October 1, the day before Trump’s Covid-19 announcement.

Mumbai Police Names Arnab’s Republic TV, Two Others In TRP Fraud

In a sensational revelation, the Mumbai Police claimed to have busted a major fraud of manipulating TRP (Television Rating Point) data by at least three TV channels and nabbed two persons, Commissioner of Police Param Bir Singh said here on Thursday.

The channels allegedly indulging in the fraudulent activities include Republic TV, Fakt Marathi and Box Cinema, and the action follows a complaint registered by the Crime Branch recently.

Singh said the owners of the 3 channels involved in the alleged scam have been charged with criminal breach of trust and cheating for ‘fixing data’.

Republic TV editor Arnab Goswami

“While 2 channels owners are arrested, the police will question the Republic TV owners/directors soon. Nobody will be spared and stringent action will be taken,” Singh warned.

Hitting back at the Mumbai Police, Republic TV’s Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami said it was an attempt to target the channel for its coverage of the Maharashtra government.

Threatening to slap a criminal defamation case against Singh, he accused the police chief of making “false allegations” against the Republic TV because the channel had questioned him in the investigations of the Sushant Singh Rajput case.

Addressing the media, Singh said that following a complaint, one person working for Hansa Research Group Pvt. Ltd., a company which is part of the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) was arrested from Malad.

He along with another person are accused of misusing confidential data that was entrusted with them for “wrongful gains by various TV channels” which in turn led to losses to advertisers and advertising agencies.

“Preliminary probe revealed that they manipulated the sampling metering services by inducing the barometer users and paying them periodically to watch particular TV channel/s,” Singh said.

Some of the people in whose homes these barometers have been installed have confessed that they were paid Rs.500 for keeping their TV sets switched on even if they didn’t actually watch.

The Kandivali Police Station has registered a case, arrested the two accused persons before a Magistrate Court which has remanded them to police custody till October 9.

“Param Bir Singh’s investigation in the Sushant Singh Rajput case is under a cloud and this is a desperate measure because of Republic TV’s reportage on Palghar, the Sushant Singh Rajput case or any other case. This kind of targeting only strengthens the resolve of everyone at Republic TV to push for the truth even harder,” Goswami added.

“Param Bir Singh stands completely exposed today since BARC has not mentioned Republic in any single complaint. He should issue an official apology and get ready to face us in court,” said the channel.

A high-level team led by Joint Police Commissioner Milind Bharambe, DCP Nandkumar Thakur and DCP Akbar Pathan, along with other officers are investigating the matter.

An official said that several teams have fanned out across India to nab some other absconders in the matter.

The police have said that certain witnesses have come forward confessing that they were given monthly monetary inducements by the accused in the matter.

‘Evidence of collusion between Huawei, Chinese state’, UK MPs allege

The accusations in the new report have the potential to increase suspicions surrounding the company’s operations….Reports Asian Lite News

There is clear evidence of collusion between Huawei and the Chinese state, a UK parliamentary inquiry concluded in its report on Thursday.

The designation of Huawei as a “high-risk vendor” by the UK government is “appropriate and completely justified” with the correct steps being taken to remove it from the UK’s 5G, said the Defence Committee of the House of Commons.

During the course of the inquiry the UK government announced that Huawei technology will be removed from the UK’s 5G network by 2027.

However, the committee noted that developments could necessitate this date being moved forward, potentially to 2025.

The government should take necessary steps to minimise the delay and economic damage and consider providing compensation to operators if the 2027 deadline is moved forward, it suggested.

Huawei, however said that “this report lacks credibility as it is built on opinion rather than fact”, the BBC reported.

“We’re sure people will see through these accusations of collusion and remember instead what Huawei has delivered for Britain over the past 20 years,” a spokesman for the company was quoted as saying.

However, the accusations in the new report have the potential to increase suspicions surrounding the company’s operations.

The report, however, said that Huawei has been, and continues to be, “sufficiently distanced from sensitive defence and national security sites.”

“Protecting the public and preserving our nation’s security are amongst the principle responsibilities of Government. The decision to embed a technology that compromises this would constitute a gross dereliction of these duties,” Chair of the Defence Committee, Tobias Ellwood, said in a statement.

The West must urgently unite to advance a counterweight to China’s tech dominance, said the report.

The committee consulted a number of technical experts on 5G networks, telecom industry insiders and and academics for the inquiry.

Executives from Huawei were not asked to testify, although they appeared before a separate UK parliament committee in July.

Yemen’s govt forces capture key military base

Yemeni troops and allied tribesmen have stormed and captured the strategic Al-Khanjer military base and surrounding areas in the northern province of Jouf, reports Arab News.

The operation, supported by Saudi-led Arab coalition warplanes, is a heavy blow to Iran-backed Houthi militias and their control of much of northern Yemen, the army said.

The report also said that the offensive followed several weeks of intensive fighting in the area. “This is a great victory. By seizing control of Al-Khanjer, the national army has secured a road between Marib and Joutema in Jouf,” said Rabia Al-Qurashi, the Yemeni army spokesman in the province.

Army commanders who led the operation said the coalition had carried out precise airstrikes that destroyed Houthi military positions and equipment, paving the way for government forces to storm the base and the other liberated areas in the province. Dozens of Houthis were killed or wounded in the fighting, they said.

KOLKATA DIARY – The Effect of Cyclone in Sandarbans by Mohammed Reza Amirinia

With a significant population, India has already been facing a great task in dealing with the damages caused by the impacts of the virus and maintaining social distancing. To make matters worse, another natural disaster hit West Bengal on 20th May as the coastal areas of the states of Odisha and the West Bengal suffered the heavy impacts of one of the strongest cyclones in decades. The hurricane caused by super cyclone “Amphan” destroyed fishing villages, homes and farms, brought down the power lines and damaged roads and highways. The high-speed winds of up to 190 Km/h caused surges in storm and heavy rainfall, raising the sea level and flooding agricultural land, farms and towns. The poor infrastructure of Kolkata could not cope with the consequence of overflowing water in the streets. Many neighbourhoods such as Kumotuli were devastated. Homes and workshops were swamped in the flooding water. People have become both jobless and homeless.

Jaydeep felt guilty and had to raise a new initiative to help his fellow citizens and compatriots. He had to expand and move his relief efforts to the Sundarbans. The Sundarbans is a delta in the Bay of Bengal, formed by the confluence of three rivers: the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna. It is partly in India and another part of this unique ecological area is located in Bangladesh. The four areas in Sundarbans have been registered as UNESCO World Heritage sites, because of their rich ecological importance, mangrove forests and wildlife sanctuaries. The Sundarbans National Park has been a centre of world attention because of the tiger and biosphere reserve, and faunal wildlife.

Sundarbans is protected from the sea by the wide range of mangrove forests which is covered by Sundari trees with broad green leaves. Sundari in Bengali means beautiful. The protection of these beautiful trees is vital to the livelihoods of the farmers and agriculture in Sundarbans. Unfortunately, the storm has also had a devasting impact on the mangrove forest, damaging many Sundari trees. As a result, the salt water has penetrated the farmland, destroying all cultivation. There are approximately 200 villages with an overall population of over 2 million in Sundarbans. The farmers in these lands rely heavily on their agricultural investment and hard work. Jaydeep explained that it takes at least three years before Sundarbans can recover from the shock and devastation of the cyclone.

The impact of the Cyclone has endangered the life and the well-being of not only the inhabitants of Sundarbans but also the tigers and all other wildlife. The ecology of the area has been disturbed, which will take a long time to recover. Many animals such as wild hogs, boars and deer were killed following the cyclone. As a result, the tigers are not able to hunt for food as before and attack local villages. This has added more danger and pain for the inhabitants of Sundarbans who became homeless and without proper shelter. Jaydeep told me that they have an expression in the area that “the Law of nature is the law of the land.” He continues saying, “Nobody can control this wild area.” Many parts of Sundarbans are no man’s land due to the extreme wild and dangerous tigers and other animals around.

Traveling to Sundarbans is strictly restricted and nobody can go there without permission. Jaydeep and his team of 15 people from Meghdutam Foundation under police escort and with the help of local government administration in Sundarbans took a three-hour journey to carry the relief packages to the villages in hardship. They also had to take a boat to reach the delta. According to Jaydeep, they visited Sundarbans 8 times in 45 days. Apart from the packages of food, the team carried with them clothing for the villagers, mosquito nets and tarpaulins to cover the roofs of damaged houses.

Jaydeep praised the help and support of all those people who sacrificed their time and energy to take the hands of other people in need on the frontline and backstage. Jaydeep particularly mentions the heroic story of an 87-year-old woman who has relentlessly stood by the aid workers since the start of the pandemic. Ms Kanta Devi Karnani who is originally from Kolkata has lived her life with her family in London. She regularly made short visits to Kolkata and returned to London, but since her last visit she has been stuck in Kolkata due to the flight bans. Jaydeep told me, “Kanta had to stay in her house in Kolkata while all her family are in London.” Jaydeep continues, “Instead of slipping into a much expected physical and mental low, she kept her will high by helping the relief workers of the non-governmental and non-commercial charitable organisation of Meghdutam Foundation.” Kanta, with the help of her servant cooked food for 15 members of Meghdutam every day for the past 4 months. Her sons, who have a factory in the UK, have also donated funds for the cause of the Meghdutam Foundation.

The world is witnessing a new era on the face of the pandemic. The state of Bengal and the city of Kolkata are arguably suffering more than any other places in the world. The people in Kolkata and Sundarbans live amidst fragile infrastructure, poorer and in more vulnerable situations than any other parts of India. However, Jaydeep and other aid workers with the care of government organisations and other NGOs bring hope and faith to vulnerable and helpless people.

It is unlikely that the Durga Puja Festival would be celebrated on the streets again in October 2020, but surely all people of Kolkata stand together in prayers whether Hindu, Muslim or Christian, to the ultimate being, Brahma, Allah or God, praying for the end of the coronavirus.

KOLKATA DIARY: Corona Cripples City of Light By Mohammed Reza Amirinia

It was in October of 2019 when I was in Kolkata, India, to be a competition judge among 13 members of a jury. The International Jury Award took place during the Durga Puja festival to help review 300 hundred pandals created by local artists and artisans. The city was colourful and vibrant in the celebration of the festival, uplifted in a united spirit to bring joy and happiness to the city regardless of religion or political ideas.

On the surface, I found Kolkata a grey and hectic city, with poverty ever-present, roads heavily congested and old rundown buildings. However, you cannot judge a place at first sight. Kolkata has many hidden beauties with a rich heritage overshadowed by its colonial history, ruled by the British Raj from 18th to the beginning of 20th Century. Kolkata is a city of contrast and contradictions, trying to recover from its colonial past and consolidate its ancient roots. Despite being under the influence of a western European power over one century has kept its character. The emergence of intellectuals, scholars and poets such as Tagore, Sri Aurobindo, Ramakrishna and many other writers and artists have kept the spirit of the city alive which persists today. The creative works of pandals is an example of livelihood of the city.

The Durga Puja Festival opened a window for me to see the richness of the culture and creativeness of the people in Kolkata. Each pandal represented a unique and different story of life and social matters in and around Kolkata and even went further, sharing stories on a global level by choosing international themes. Jaydeep Mukerjee, a travel agent in Kolkata is the founder of Meghdutam Travels and International Jury Award. He has been a pioneer to promote the Durga Puja Festival internationally. Jaydeep and his family worked hard to showcase the work of local communities and clubs in support of creative pandals which they have sponsored for many years. Jaydeep’s ambition is to showcase the creative works of artists to the world.

Just like in other places around the world, life went on as usual in Kolkata until the coronavirus pandemic hit the world. The city of Kolkata was no exception. India, like many other countries in the world has suffered badly and the poor and vulnerable people have been mostly affected. All sectors of the society face a challenging time to experience self-isolation and quarantine. All projects have been put on hold, and the financial state of companies and individuals is disturbed. Villagers who had migrated from the countryside to the city and the local poor workers of Kolkata who are heavily reliant on events such as the Durga Puja Festival have suffered the consequences of lockdown. These workers used to work for local sports, activities or charity clubs and in neighbourhood communities preparing all aspects, from the design of the pandals to idol-making and the construction and decoration of huge settings of Pandals throughout Kolkata. The workers of Kumortuli quarter in the northern part of Kolkata have become jobless. Kumortuli is a well-known district for all traditional potters and sculptors of Kolkata.

While the world is waiting for a cure from the hands of scientists and people are advised to take shelter in their homes and commit to lockdown and self-isolation, Jaydeep and his wife Swaguna have sacrificed their health, time and energy to help the needy people of Kolkata. Jaydeep has deep sympathy for the children and families of the workers and wishes to do something to help their plight. He arranged a major relief effort through his newly established charity, Meghdutam Foundation. Jaydeep has organised the supplies, contributions and gifts from local communities in addition to private donations. The Durga Puja clubs often requested help from Jaydeep to help the locals. Jaydeep said, “the funds were used to purchase the essential necessities such as rice, potatoes, cooking oil, biscuits and cakes, baby food and sanitizers”. Jaydeep’s wife, two daughters and mother-in-law joined him in this campaign to do all the packaging. Jaydeep and his wife put themselves on the frontline taking the food packages to Kumotuli quarter and Sonagachi area, two of the most deprived neighbourhood in Kolkata. “We covered over 150 families a day,” Jaydeep said.

“We visited orphanages and helped the guys who did the newspaper deliveries, as printing has stopped.”

Jaydeep started another interesting initiative as well: “we will be carrying with us a few boxes of crayons and pencils for young children to encourage them to draw and paint.”  Inspired by global events, and as a way to embed it into their art, they created a slogan: “we kill the Coronavirus as the Durga killed the Demon.” Jaydeep said, “they truly believe in what they are doing.” The children had a theme to work on as they have been brought up with the mystical story of Durga, a female character, a ten-armed Hindu Goddess who rescued the earth from an evil demon called “Mahisasur”. The Durga had to kill the demon without shedding any blood, otherwise each blood drop would have reproduced another demon.

Jaydeep said, “the young artists are calling the mother Durga to rescue the earth from the demon”. The paintings will eventually be exhibited and sold to raise funds and help their families and fellow citizens. Jaydeep said that he would continue to provide support until the coronavirus is over.

French Open: Djokovic, Kvitova make it to the semis

Novak Djokovic and Petra Kvitova have entered the semifinals on the ongoing French Open after registering contrasting wins in their respective quarterfinal matches.

In the men’s singles event, Djokovic, despite visibly struggling with his left arm early on Wednesday evening, defeated Pablo Carreno Busta 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 in three hours and 10 minutes to make it to his 10th semi-final at the Roland Garros.

“Well, I definitely didn’t feel great coming into the court today,” the Serbian admitted after the match. “Few things happened in the warm-up. I had to deal with those physical issues coming onto the court. As the match went on, I felt better, didn’t feel as much pain.”

“But I don’t want to take away anything from his good performance. Especially for a set and a half he was the better player, dictating the play. I was very neutral. I didn’t have much energy really happening in my legs or movement or game itself,” he added.

The world number one will next face Stefanos Tsitsipas, who ousted Hamburg European Open champion Andrey Rublev in straight sets.

In other men’s singles semifinal, 12-time champion Rafael Nadal will lock horns with Diego Schwartzman.

Meanwhile, in the women’s singles event, Kvitova booked her place in the last four following a 6-3, 6-3 win over Laura Siegemund in 78 minutes.

The seventh seed, who is yet to drop a set this fortnight, was impressive against Siegemund as she claimed 77 per cent of her first-serve points and converted five of 10 break points.

“I think I’m still same clay player as I was before, but I just think that I find those conditions here and I’m still mentally tough,” Kvitova said. “I mean, I played indoor, outdoor, sun, wind, whatever, rain, whatever happens… I think eight years ago I think it was everything, you know, kind of (the) same, same weather.”

Kvitova will face this year’s Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin for a place in a maiden Roland-Garros final.

In other semifinal, Argentine qualifier Nadia Podoroska, who had defeated third seed Elina Svitolina, will compete against Polish teenager Iga Swiatek.

Teenager becomes Finland’s PM for a day

Finland PM Marin stepped aside letting Aava Murto to take her position for a day during which the latter met politicians and highlighted women’s rights in technology…Reports Asian Lite News

A 16-year-old teenager, who actively campaigns on climate and human rights issues, became the Prime Minister of Finland for a day, as part of the country’s incumbent leader Sanna Marin’s fight to end gender gap, the media report.

On Wednesday, Marin stepped aside letting Aava Murto to take her position for a day during which the latter met politicians and highlighted women’s rights in technology.

This is the fourth year of Finland’s participation in humanitarian organisation Plan International’s “Girls Takeover” initiative, which allows teenagers from countries from across the globe to step into the shoes of leaders and other sectors for a day.

This year’s focus is on promoting digital skills and technological opportunities for girls, with Kenya, Peru, Sudan and Vietnam among the countries holding their own swaps.

In a speech, Murto said: “It is a pleasure to be speaking here before you today – although, in a way, I wish that I did not have to stand here, that campaigns like the Girls’ Takeover were no longer necessary.

“However, the truth is that we have not yet achieved gender equality – not anywhere on earth. Although we have accomplished a great lot of good in this area, there is still much work that needs to be done.”

Speaking ahead of the event, Marin, who became the world’s youngest Prime Minister when she was sworn in last year at the age of 34, stressed the importance of ensuring technologies are made “accessible to everyone”, reports the BBC.

“They must not deepen the digital divide between countries or within societies.”

Marin is the Finland’s third female premier and leads a centre-left coalition with four other parties – all headed by women, three of whom are under 35.

Jews protest as US Covid-19 spike turns communal

Jewish leader, State Senator Simcha Felder said that Governor Cuomo’s choice to single out a particular religious group was outrageous…Reports Asian Lite News

The resurgence of Covid-19 cases in few parts of New York has led to the communal targeting of the Jewish minority, which countered it with protests and making a bonfire of masks.

After Governor Andrew Cuomo singled out the Jewish community for the Covid-19 clusters of rising infection rates in some parts of the city and state and imposed stringent restrictions on places of worship, hundreds of Jewish demonstrators took to the streets overnight on Tuesday into Wednesday, many defiantly without masks and burning masks challenging police, who stood by.

A Jewish leader, State Senator Simcha Felder said: “Governor Cuomo’s choice to single out a particular religious group… was outrageous.

“His language was dangerous and divisive, and left the implication that Orthodox Jews alone are responsible for rising Covid-19 cases in New York state.”

While it had been the epicentre in the early days of the pandemic, New York city and state have beaten back the disease with an infection rate of around 1 per cent, while restrictions have been eased with schools reopening for in-person teaching and allowing indoor dining in restaurants.

But in recent weeks, fresh new cases have been reported which were linked to five clusters in the state, three of them with large Jewish populations, one of them in the city and two others outside the city.

Cuomo, a Democrat, and other politicians have focused their criticism on the Jewish community over mask-wearing and social distancing, while there were three other areas without large Jewish population and people of other faiths not adhering to the rules.

“Orthodox Jewish gatherings often are very, very large and we’ve seen what one person can do in a group,” Cuomo said, adding that he will “see if they will agree to live and abide by the rules and advocate compliance”.

New York, Aug. 18, 2020 (Xinhua) — New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo provides a coronavirus update during a press briefing in Albany of New York State, the United States, May 15, 2020. (Mike Groll/Office of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo/Handout via Xinhua/IANS)

At the heart of the clusters known as ‘red zones’, all but essential businesses will be shut, dining indoors will be banned and places of worship will be allowed to have only 10 people.

The restrictions are reimposed on a sliding scale in the orange and yellow zones on its periphery.

The restrictions are being imposed in the middle of the Jewish holidays of Succoth commemorating their wandering in the desert before reaching Israel.

The protesters, most of whom belong to orthodox sects of Judaism that follows a strict interpretation of the Bible, chanted, “Jewish lives matter”.

In a taunt to politicians, that echoed the rallying cry, “Black lives matter”, at the protests against police brutality which were backed by Democrats despite not practising social distancing or strictly adhering to masks.

Besides making bonfires, the protesters beat up a photographer recording the scene and a member of one of their sect who they accused of being a police informer.

Police did not intervene.
