UAE banks witness 38.9% decline in H1 profits

A recent report on the performance of listed commercial banks in the GCC has revealed that the profits of such banks in the UAE dropped an average 38.9% in the first half of 2020. The report published by KPMG says that the decline was mainly due to the higher-than-expected credit losses on loans and advances.

The losses in this regard increased by 125.8% on an average, compared to the previous year. The quality of credit exposures has also deteriorated, resulting in an increase in the non-performing loan ratio from 3.8% on 31 December, 2019, to 4.1% on 30 June 2020, for the UAE’s top banks.

Abbas Basrai, Partner and Head of Financial Services at KPMG Lower Gulf, commented: “KPMG’s analysis shows that the UAE banking sector has remained resilient, despite a challenging operating environment and a drop in net profits from the top 10 listed banks. Stakeholders’ focus is shifting towards stability, solvency, and liquidity. It remains to be seen whether this will trigger another wave of mergers and acquisitions in the region’s banking sector.”

The report also welcomed a USD 70 billion stimulus package announced by the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE). The package came out at a time when banks are facing an unprecedented demand for greater liquidity, says the report.

GCC governments and central banks also announced various economic support measures including payment holidays for borrowers and targeted liquidity support for banks. To maintain stability in the sector during unprecedented times, some regulators have also provided specific relief from capital norms and certain accounting guidelines.

Arab youth choose UAE as the best place to live

The UAE has been named as the “model nation” to aspire to by Arab youth for the ninth consecutive year.

In the 12th Annual ASDA’A BCW Arab Youth Survey, released Tuesday, the country was voted for by young Arabs ahead of other Western and Eastern nations, underlining the UAE’s reputation as one of the world’s top places to live. The survey polled 4,000 young Arab nationals aged 18 to 24 from 17 Arab states in the Middle East and North Africa with a 50:50 male female split.

When asked which country in the world they would like to live in, nearly half (46 percent) of all young Arabs select the UAE as their country of choice, followed by the US (33 percent), Canada (27 percent), the UK (27 percent), and Germany (22 percent).

Asked specifically what they associate most with the UAE, young Arabs cited factors including safety and security (44 percent), wide range of work opportunities (36 percent), generous salary packages (32 percent), a growing economy (31 percent) and a good place to raise a family (25 percent) as the top five reasons.

Underlining the strong reputation of the UAE across the Arab world, a vast majority (89 percent) of Arab youth see it as an ally of their country, in addition to being regarded as one of the top three rising powers that have most increased their influence in the Arab world, alongside Saudi Arabia and the United States of America.

Sunil John, President – Middle East of BCW and founder of ASDA’A BCW, said: “For years, the UAE has served as a beacon of hope in the region. The unique model of the nation, celebrating social, religious and cultural pluralism, continues to gain the admiration of young Arabs, who see the UAE as the top nation in the world, over Western and Eastern counterparts, to live in and emulate.

“This is a powerful statement on the positivity and progressive outlook of the UAE leadership and people.”

Saina, Kashyap Pulls out of Denmark Open

Star badminton players Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap have withdrawn from the Denmark Open. The Super 750 tournament, which is expected to signal the restart of the sport’s international calendar, is set to played from October 13 to 18 in Odense.

“Yes, we have pulled out of the tournament,” Kashyap, husband of Saina, told IANS. Saina pulling out of the tournament means that there would be no Indian participation in the women’s singles event, as reigning world champion PV Sindhu had pulled out in September.

The Indian squad for the Denmark Open now comprises former world No.1 Kidambi Srikanth, Lakshya Sen, Ajay Jayaram, and Shubhankar Dey.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) had earlier intended the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup team events to mark the restart of the badminton calendar, but the tournaments were cancelled after several countries pulled out due to safety concerns arising out of the Covid pandemic. The BWF also cancelled the Denmark Masters, which was set to start two days after the end of the Denmark Open.

Trump Tightens H-1B Rules

The Acting Deputy DHS Secretary Ken Cuccinelli said about one-third of the people who have applied for H1B visas would be denied under the new rules…reports NIKHILA NATARAJAN

The Donald Trump administration moved Tuesday to cut back H1B visas for foreign skilled workers and tightened wage-based entry barriers citing “data” that more than 500,000 Americans have lost their jobs because of “H1B non-immigrants”.

India and China account for the lion’s share of H1B visas. As per US government data, India accounts for upwards of 70 per cent, most years.

In a call with reporters, Acting Deputy DHS Secretary Ken Cuccinelli said about one-third of the people who have applied for H1B visas would be denied under the new rules.

With Trump laid up with COVID-19, his poll numbers tanking and less than 30 days to go before the US election, the timing of the H1B visa hammering is business as usual for foreign workers.

“It would have been a surprise if this hadn’t happened,” an H1B worker on site at JP Morgan in New York City told IANS. The worker asked not to be named. The salary requirement will be a “gamechanger” in favour of the Trump administration, this worker said.

Many H1B workers expressed a version of the same sentiment. They’ve seen this movie before. It’s Trump’s all-base, all the time anthem to fire up his most vocal supporters, they said.

The latest blow comes as the ducks line up across multiple departments that coordinate and monitor the criss-crossing elements of foreign worker visas: US Department of Labor (DoL), US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The Department of Labor’s revisions to minimum salary requirements take effect Thursday and DHS’ H1B revisions will hit home in 60 days.

“When seeking to employ an H-1B, H-1B1, or E-3 visa, US employers must attest that they will pay non-immigrant workers, during the period of authorized employment, the higher of the prevailing wage or the actual wage paid to other employees with similar experience and qualifications,” US Department of Labor announced.

The gaslighting of the “low costa H1B pay cheque is a well worn anthem and has become louder in the Trump years. The word “undercut” was used multiple times on Tuesday in a round robin of smoothly co-ordinated press-releases and telephonic briefings across DoL and DHS.

The DOL rule will raise the four salary tiers for employees on H1Bs and other professional visas, which currently begin at the 17th percentiles for each industry, to the 45th percentile.

“Under the existing wage levels, artificially low prevailing wages provide an opportunity for employers to hire and retain foreign workers at wages well below what their US counterparts – meaning US workers in the same labor market, performing similar jobs, and possessing similar levels of education, experience, and responsibility – make, creating an incentive – entirely at odds with the statutory scheme – to prefer foreign workers to US workers, and causing downward pressure on the wages of the domestic workforce,” reads an excerpt from the DoL interim final rule.

The Department is also tightening the screws on the definition of “specialty occupation” to make it align with what it calls the “verbatim” description.

In parallel, DHS will narrow the definition of “specialty occupation”, require companies to make “real” offers to “real employees,” and turbocharge its own ability to ensure compliance “before, during, and after an H1-B petition is approved”.

“Data shows that the more than a half million H-1B non-immigrants in the United States have been used to displace US workers,” read a statement from the Department of Homeland Security.

Srishti Discloses Her Far-fetched Dream

Srishti Jain: Acting felt like a far-fetched dream.

Srishti Jain, who is currently playing the lead role in the show Hamari Wali Good News, says becoming an actor felt like a far-fetched dream.

“I was always fascinated with acting and really wanted to become an actor, but at the same time, it always felt like a far-fetched dream. Owing to the fact that I belong to a family of engineers and doctors, my family was always very sceptical of the industry,” she said.

“My father got a job in Mumbai, and we shifted. I felt like destiny has bought me closer to my dream. That’s when I built up the courage to talk to my parents. I wona¿t lie, it took some time but eventually they agreed. I guess they realised how passionate I was about acting,” she added.

Her struggle didn’t end there.

“The real struggle began when I started auditioning, I knew nothing about the industry or how to go about things. I can account for at least three years of countless auditions while managing my college and lectures. I remember I would travel by metro in those days. It wasn’t easy and there were times when people around me laughed at me, they would taunt me for being stupid and chasing after something that wasn’t guaranteed,” she recalled.

“When I got my first break, I quit design college. That was a huge decision and I was advised against it by everyone, but my parents supported me. Today, I’m glad I took that step, I wouldn’t have been here today without that. Then I pursued my graduation in psychology through correspondence while shooting for my show. God has been great to me and I’m very thankful,” she said.

Talking about her show and her role of Navya, she said: “The show is very interesting. It’s unique, fresh and progressive. Navya is a girl-next-door, she’s strong-headed and believes in standing up for what’s right and voicing her opinion. She’s full of life. She got married quite early because of family pressure. She’s 23 years old and is still a child at heart. But at the same time, she’s mature. She’s always happy and never really gets upset. She also loves everyone.”
