NATO’s M4 Guns Fall in Hands of Terrorists

Maulana Masood Azhar.

The UN Security Council (UNSC) designated international terrorist and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) founder Maulana Masood Azhars three nephews, each carrying a US-made M4 sniper, have been killed in three different encounters in Kashmir in the last three years…reports AHMED ALI FAYYAZ

A number of US-made M4 sniper rifles, used by Nato forces to fight terrorism in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region, have fallen in the hands of Azhar’s guerrilla group, JEM, in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). Released by India in exchange for the IC-814 hostages at Kandahar in December 1999, Azhar has been designated as an international terrorist by the UNSC in May 2019, after years of sustained resistance by China.

The M4 carbine is extensively used by the US Armed Forces and is replacing the M16 rifle in the United States Army and the United States Marine Corps combat units as the primary infantry weapon and service rifle. The M4 is also capable of mounting the M203 and M320 grenade launchers.

The M4 has semi-automatic and three-round burst firing modes (like the M16A2 and M16A4), while the M4A1 has semi-automatic and fully automatic firing modes (like the M16A1 and M16A3). It is essentially a lighter and shorter variant of the M16A2 assault rifle with a telescopic stock.

Three of Azhar’s nephews-Talha Rashid, Usman Ibrahim and Umar Farooq-have died in different encounters with security forces in Kashmir in the last three years. All the three were in possession of M4 rifles which were recovered, along with other arms and ammunition, from the sites of the gun battles. Till now different variants of the Russian-made Kalashnikov or AK-series rifles have been the principal assault weapon with the Kashmiri and the Pakistani militants in J&K since 1988.

The M4 has entered the scene amid apprehensions that sections of jihadist guerrillas could shift their base to Kashmir after a compromise between the Americans and the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Dilbag Singh, DG, J&K Police, puts the number of the militants with M4 rifles around six, claiming that ten US-made snipers had been seized. “Five to six JeM commanders are active with M4 rifles but they are well on our radar,” he said. However, some senior officials of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), who have been associated with the investigation of high-profile terror attacks in the last two years, maintained that 10 to 15 JeM commanders were currently armed with M4 rifles.

“The commander of every JeM module of 3-4 militants has one M4 but they have not been able to cause much damage to the police or the security forces,” said an NIA officer.

During investigations, the NIA has learned that as many as 60 JeM militants had infiltrated into Kashmir through the international border in Jammu between June 2017 to January 2020. They sneaked into the Samba and Hiranagar areas in groups of three to five. An unknown number of infiltrators is said to have entered through one underground tunnel which has surfaced early this year. According to the officials, each group carried 3-4 AK rifles and one M4 rifle.

Three of such groups were intercepted at Jhajjar Kotli, Bann Toll Plaza and Jawahar Tunnel on the 265-km long Jammu-Srinagar highway. Each time the modus operandi was to board a waiting truck in Samba or Hiranagar and reach the JeM’s hideouts in Kulgam, Shopian and Pulwama districts in southern Kashmir.

On June 20, an unsuccessful attempt was made with the help of the Pakistani Rangers to deliver arms and ammunition, including one M4, two magazines and 60 rounds of ammunition, besides seven M67 grenades, by an 18-kg drone. The quadcopter was, however, spotted by the BSF observation posts in Hiranagar and shot down. The consignment was supposedly for a Pakistani terror commander Ali Bhai, based in South Kashmir. Officials believe this was the first such attempt.

A three-member group of JeM infiltrators, travelling by an arranged truck, was intercepted by security forces near Jhajjar Kotli on the Jammu-Srinagar highway, on September 12, 2018. All the three militants were killed. Their driver and another civilian facilitator were arrested.

In an identical chance encounter at Bann Toll Plaza on January 31, another group of three JeM infiltrators was killed on the Jammu-Srinagar highway. Their truck driver and one civilian facilitator were arrested.

On September 9, the J&K Police intercepted a vehicle at Jawahar Tunnel on the same highway. One M4, one AK rifle and six Chinese pistols were recovered from the truck on the way to the valley from Jammu. The driver, along with a terror facilitator, both residents of Shopian, was arrested.

Talha Rashid, son of Masood Azhar’s sister, was killed in an encounter on November 7, 2017 at Aglar Kandi in Pulwama district. His Pakistani associate Mehmood Bhai and a local militant, Waseem of Drabgam Pulwama, were also killed in the same encounter. Rashid’s M4 was among the other arms and ammunition recovered.

In the middle of 2018, security agencies learned that JeM had deployed four of its commanders, each armed with an M4, from its training centres in Pakistan. Sameer Tiger, one of the most wanted militant commanders with one M4, made his own photograph viral on the social media.

Later that year, Azhar’s second nephew (the son of his brother), Usman Ibrahim alias Haider, was known to have attacked and killed three security personnel in separate sniper attacks in 10 days in the Tral-Awantipora belt. He was killed, along with an associate, in an encounter at Chankitar, Tral, on October 31, 2018. His M4 too was recovered.

Azhar’s third nephew Umar Farooq was killed, along with his Pakistani associate Kamran, in an encounter at Suthsoo Kalan village, bordering Budgam and Pulwama districts, on March 29, 2019. The recoveries included Umar Farooq’s M4 carbine. Umar and Kamran had allegedly played a key role in planning and executing the fidayeen attack in which the Kashmiri suicide bomber Adil Dar killed 40 paramilitary personnel at Lethapora, Awantipora, on the Jammu-Srinagar highway on February 14, 2019.

Saudi,Israel accuse Turkey of hostile acts

Israel, which generally avoids public criticism of Turkey, lashed out at Istanbul for disrupting peace efforts and asked NATO members to rein it in…Reports Asian Lite News

Saudi Arabia has blamed Turkey for hostility towards its leadership and asked citizens to boycott everything Turkish after Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Arab countries of destabilising the region.

Israel, which generally avoids public criticism of Turkey, lashed out at Istanbul for disrupting peace efforts and asked NATO members to rein it in.

Saudi Arabia’s Chamber of Commerce head Ajlan Al Ajlan on Saturday tweeted,”The boycott of everything Turkish, whether on the level of import, investment or tourism, is the responsibility of every Saudi – trader and consumer – in response to the continued hostility of the Turkish government against our leadership, our country and our citizens.”

Erdogan had recently blamed the Arab countries for instability in the Middle East. Though Turkey has had diplomatic relations with Israel for decades, Erdogan condemned the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain’s decision to normalise ties with Israel.

During his recent address to the Turkish General Assembly, Erdogan also took a dig at the Arab countries saying, “It should not be forgotten that the countries in question did not exist yesterday, and probably will not exist tomorrow; however, we will continue to keep our flag flying in this region forever, with the permission of Allah.”

In the meantime, Israel’s defence minister blasted Turkey on Sunday for working against its peacemaking efforts.

Media reports said that Defence Minister Benny Gantz, while talking to Gulf Arab media, described Turkey and Iran as “denying promotion of peace and supporting regional aggression”.

Gantz pointed out Turkey’s disruptive actions in northern Syria and the Eastern Mediterranean, intervention in Libya and links to Hamas terror group.

“All of this pushes away from stability,” he said adding, “Definitely the question of Turkey is a very complicated one, because Turkey is part of NATO,” Gantz told a virtual conference organised by The Arab Council for Regional Integration, a group that encourages Israeli-Arab outreach.

“So we must take all the options that we have in our hands and try to influence it through international pressure to make sure that they are pulling their hands from direct terrorism.”

The peace deals between Gulf states and Israel have disappointed the Palestinians, who have been demanding statehood in the West Bank and Gaza. The US and Israel believe the peace deals with the UAE and Bahrain could lead to the fulfilment of a peace deal for with Palestine as well.

Pakistan Loses Malaysia’s Support On Kashmir

Last year Pakistan was able to get only two countries in the 193-member UN — Turkey and Malaysia — to publicly echo its concerns about Kashmir. But this year only Turkey has, making Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan a voice in the wilderness…reports Arul Louis

Pakistan lost Malaysia’s public support on its Kashmir stand as Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin made no mention of it in his speech on Saturday at the high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly, reversing last year’s volatile stand of Mahathir Mohamad.

Last year Pakistan was able to get only two countries in the 193-member UN — Turkey and Malaysia — to publicly echo its concerns about Kashmir. But this year only Turkey has, making Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan a voice in the wilderness.

Muhyiddin warned about the resurgence of terrorism because of the Covid-19 pandemic,

“We must never discount the fact that terrorist groups could be ramping up their efforts to take advantage of the present uncertain times to further enhance their agenda,” he said.

He spoke at length about the Palestine issue calling it a failure of the UN.

“Together with the rest of the international community, Malaysia will continue to reaffirm its support to the realisation of the state of Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital,” he said.

Muhyiddin Yassin.

Last year, Mahathir spoke on the Kashmir issue alongside the Palestine problem.

“Despite the UN resolution on Jammu and Kashmir, the country has been invaded and occupied,” he said in unusually harsh terms for a Malaysian leader.

“There may be reasons for this action but it is still wrong. The problem must be solved by peaceful means. India should work with Pakistan to resolve this problem. Ignoring the UN would lead to other forms of disregard for the UN and the Rule of Law,” said Mahathir.

The 95-year-old Mahathir, back in office from a 15-year hiatus, was working with Turkey and Pakistan to create a non-Arab-led centre for Islam when he spoke last year.

Malaysia, with a large minority of Indian origin, has a tradition of friendly relations with New Delhi and the Mahathir experience appears as an aberration.

Bringing up Kashir again this year, Turkey’ s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called it a “burning issue” in his speech on Tuesday in the opening session of the General Assembly’s high-level meeting.

“The Kashmir conflict, which is also key to the stability and peace of South Asia, is still a burning issue,” he said.

The withdrawal of Kashmir’s special constitutional status “further complicated the problem,” he said.

But he avoided mentioning India by name.

Reacting to Erdogan, India’s Permanent Representative to UN, T.S. Tirumurti, said in a tweet that his remarks “constitute gross interference in India’s internal affairs and are completely unacceptable. Turkey should learn to respect sovereignty of other nations and reflect on its own policies more deeply.”

France to shut Paris bars for two weeks

Regarding the closure of bars, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said the move would be difficult for Parisians…Reports Asian Lite News

Bars across Paris will be shut completely for two weeks from Tuesday onwards as part of the French government’s new stricter measures in the wake of a spike in the number of fresh coronavirus cases.

The latest development comes after the government raised the capital city’s Covid-19 alert to the maximum level, which is imposed when the infection rate in a locality exceeds 250 per 100,000 people and at least 30 per cent of intensive care beds are reserved for infected patients, the BBC reported.

A statement issued by Prime Minister Jean Castex’s office said: “These measures, indispensable in the fight to curb the virus’ spread, will apply to Paris and the three departments immediately surrounding it, for a duration of two weeks.”Further details will be revealed later Monday.

While bars will shut, restaurants and bistros that serve food and alcohol can stay open, as long as they register contact details from customers and close at 10 p.m.

Regarding the closure of bars, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said the move would be difficult for Parisians.

“We are French, we love to drink, to eat, to live, to smile and to kiss each other,” the BBC quoted the Minister as saying to French TV channel LCI and Europe 1 on Sunday.

On September 26, Marseille, the third biggest French city, closed all bars, restaurants and gyms also for a period of two weeks.

France has witnessed a constant increase in the number of new Covid-19 cases since late August.

On Saturday, the country reported nearly 17,000 cases, the biggest single-day spike.

The following day, it reported 12,565 Covid-19 cases.

As of Monday, France accounted for an overall caseload of 629,509, while the death toll stood at 32,171.

The Arab League has warned Turkey over its role in increased regional tension in the Mediterranean regions, saying that “it will not end well” for the regional power.Arab News Reports

Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit said in a televised statement: “Turkey is facing a group of differences with regional and superpower parties to a degree that will not end well for it or its leadership.

“Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is interfering in Egypt, Syria, Iraq and Libya militarily,” he added.

“Erdogan also interfered in the Caucasus between Azerbaijan and Armenia, collided with Greece and Cyprus, and attacked the eastern Mediterranean in the gas areas, which made a large and influential country like France send fighters and an aircraft carrier to Cyprus.

“Even Italy, which was understanding of many of the Turkish positions, went to France. Everyone is telling Erdogan now that he will face consequences for his actions.

“It annoys me that the Syrians use mercenaries to fight with Azerbaijan against Armenia … It is very sad that Syrian mercenaries are being used by Erdogan in cases that are unrelated to Turkey,” Aboul Gheit said.

He claimed that former US president Barack Obama caused destruction in Arab countries by supporting the Arab Spring in 2011.

Khadi Sales Cross 1 Cr. Mark On Gandhi Jayanti

Khadi (Photo: IANS)

The soaring spirit of Khadi lovers got better of the Covid-19 fear on Gandhi Jayanti with the Khadi sales figure crossing the Rs 1 crore mark at Delhi’s flagship Khadi India outlet in Connaught Place…reports India Daily News.

The overall sales of Khadi was recorded at Rs 1,02,19,496 on Friday (October 2),which is significantly high given the prevailing Corona pandemic situation, said the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

Last year, the total sale at Khadi’s CP outlet on October 2, stood at Rs 1.27 crore.

“As many as 1,633 bills were generated throughout the day with an average purchase of Rs 6,258 per bill.”

Customers belonging to different segments and age-groups queued at the Khadi India outlet since morning.

Notably, Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has also launched its customary annual special 20 per cent discount on all products to celebrate the 151st birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

KVIC Chairman Vinai Kumar Saxena attributed the massive sale figures to the frequent appeals of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to buy Khadi and also its growing popularity among masses particularly the youth.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi

“Despite the corona pandemic, a large number of people still came out to buy Khadi which is a result of the repeated appeals of the Hon’ble PM. Khadi has become a household name and the number of Khadi lovers is constantly growing. And despite a manifold increase in production, KVIC has ensured the highest quality of its product range that has kept our consumer base intact,” Saxena said.

He added although the sale figure this year fell just short of last year’s mark because of the pandemic, the over Rs 1 crore single-day sale figure was still quite satisfactory.

The high sale figure of Khadi this year assumes greater significance. While almost all activities were closed during the Covid-19 lockdown, KVIC continued with its diverse activities across the country that includes the manufacturing of face masks and personal hygiene products like hand wash and hand sanitizers apart from a vast range of fabric and village industries products.
