Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has added a new feather to his hat by becoming the first cricketer in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to score 2,000 runs and scalp 110 wickets.
In the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday which Chennai Super Kings lost by seven runs, the Arjun Awardee scored 50 runs in 35 balls during their chase of 165. During the course of his knock, he smashed 2 sixes and 5 fours.
The left-hander has become only the fourth cricketer to touch the 2,000-run mark and bag more than 50 wickets in the IPL. He has joined Shane Watson, Kieron Pollard and Jacques Kallis in the list of players who have achieved the feat.
“I am humbled to be the only cricketer in the history of IPL to achieve the double. This will only push me to work harder and bring more glory to my country and my team. I hope that my family and the cricket-loving audience are proud of me,” Jadeja said in a statement.
The 31-year-old has played a total of 174 matches so far in IPL (106 for Chennai Super Kings, 27 for Gujarat Lions, 14 for Kochi Tuskers Kerala and 27 for Rajasthan Royals).
The MS Dhoni-led side have not been in the best of form in IPL 2020 and have registered just one win out of the four games they have played so far. They will be taking on Kings XI Punjab in their next game at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday evening.
Union minister Piyush Goyal has said that India needs to move beyond exporting raw materials and improve its manufacturing capabilities to supply high-quality products to the world.
He said that ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ effectively is all about building Indian capabilities, quality, scale, implementing good manufacturing practices, bringing best of technologies along with improving the standards that Indians expect in India.
Goyal said in a video posted on his Twitter handle that India will have to identify areas in which it can excel and become a major global supplier.
“We will have to identify areas where sensible policies can help us get there. As the Prime Minister said on August 15, look at areas where we need to create value…where we can go beyond exporting raw materials,” the minister said.
Elucidating his stress on exporting more of finished products compared to raw materials he said that China’s production of steel is way higher than India and it imports iron ore from India, although it has its own reserves.
“India at 100 million tonnes of steel, China at 800 million tonnes of steel and even then I think we are the second largest manufacturer. Look at the gap and we are exporting iron ore to China,” he said.
“I am told China has iron ore but they are conserving it. Can we think of some smart options?”
He also said India can provide a “true partnership” to the world in terms of supplies and make the global supply chain more resilient and foolproof.

Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Cabinet Member and Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, has led the UAE delegation to the signing ceremony of the peace deal between the Sudanese government and armed Sudanese groups, in Juba.
Addressing the ceremony, Al Mazrouei underlined the support of the Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, for the deal which, he said, contributes to supporting peace and stability and puts an end to conflicts and infighting in the fraternal state of Sudan.
He thanked the President of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, and Tut Qalwak, the advisor to South Sudan’s President who is also the head of mediation, for their contributions to forging this “historic deal”.
“This is a significant and critical moment in the Sudanese people’s history that brings all parties together to support the principles of peace, security and stability in a way that puts an end to the causes of conflict and infighting,” the minister said, wishing for security and prosperity to prevail in Sudan.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have “agreed the importance” of finding a post-Brexit trade deal, Downing Street has said.
They agreed progress has been made in talks between the EU and UK but “significant gaps” remain, Downing Street said, the BBC reported.
Both have instructed their chief negotiators to “work intensively” in order to try to bridge those gaps.
Negotiations between the UK and EU broke up on Friday without agreement.
Both sides are calling on the other to compromise on key issues, including fishing and government subsidies.
Johnson and von der Leyen spoke during a phone call on Saturday and agreed to speak on a regular basis.
A Downing Street spokesperson said the two had agreed on the importance of finding an agreement “as a strong basis for a strategic EU-UK relationship in future.”
The UK’s chief negotiator, Lord Frost, tweeted that work to resolve differences between the UK and EU “begins as soon as we can next week”.
Speaking earlier, while on a visit to Leeds, Johnson said he wants a deal like one struck between the EU and Canada, but reiterated the UK was ready should it have to leave without a deal.
“We’re resolved on either course, we’re prepared for either course and we’ll make it work but it’s very much up to our friends and partners,” Johnson said.
It comes after von der Leyen called for talks to “intensify”, as both sides set an October deadline to settle their differences.
The King asked him to continue as a caretaker premier until a successor was named following the November 10 general elections…Reports Asian Lite News
Jordan’s King Abdullah has accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Omar Razzazs Cabinet, but asked him to continue as a caretaker premier until a successor was named following the November 10 general elections, according to a Royal Court statement.
Replying to Razzaz’s resignation, the monarch in a letter on Saturday thanked the outgoing premier and his ministerial team for “undertaking your duties and diligently assuming your responsibilities throughout your tenure, especially during the extraordinary circumstances imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic”, The Jordan Times reported.
“Despite the Cabinet’s efforts in setting plans and programmes and implementing priorities, it is important to learn from the mistakes that marked aspects of the response to Covid-19, a challenge unlike the world has seen in decades, with methods to address it being refined day by day, based on the latest developments.
“As I hereby accept your resignation, I entrust you and the Cabinet to continue as caretaker government, until a new Prime Minister is selected and a new Cabinet is formed, and I stress the importance of working diligently during this period, because dealing with Covid-19 requires focused and persistent action, with ongoing measures being taken without delay,” he added in the letter.
In his resignation letter, Razzaz outlined his Cabinet’s achievements since he became the Prime Minister in 2018.
He also said that the pandemic had impact on his cabinet’s priorities for this year, with safeguarding public health and well-being becoming the main goal.
The development came almost after a week the country’s Parliament was dissolved ahead of the November elections.
The House of Representatives or the lower House comprises 130 seats, of which 115 members are elected by an open list proportional representation from 23 constituencies of between three and nine seats in size and 15 seats reserved for women.
Nine of the 115 proportional representation seats are reserved for the Christian minority, with another three reserved for the Chechen and Circassian minorities.
Delhi Capitals (DC) secured a thrilling 18-run win, but not before Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) gave them some anxious moments towards the end of the 16th IPL game on Saturday night.
DC skipper Shreyas who knocked 88 off 38 balls and remained on crease was adjudged the Man of the Match, and the win lifted DC to the top of the points table. They now have six points from four matches while KKR are placed sixth with four points from four games.
Despite some explosive batting by Eoin Morgan (44 off 18) and Rahul Tripathi (36 off 16) towards the end of the KKR innings, they failed to overhaul the massive 229-run target as the two-time champions fell short of the target.
Earlier, KKR won the toss and opted to bowl. Besides Shreyas, opener Prithvi Shaw scored a half-century (66 off 41 balls) and Rishabh Pant hammered a 17-ball 38 to take their team to 228 for four wickets in 20 overs. In reply, KKR made 210 for eight wickets in 20 overs, after once threatening to run away with the game. Nitish Rana was their top scorer with 58 off 35 balls and Eoin Morgan smashed 44 off 18 balls, but in vain.
Chasing the target, KKR opener Sunil Narine once again failed to fire as he fell cheaply after managing just three runs. Shubhman Gill (28) and Rana then took command of the proceedings as they took their side past the 50-run mark in 5.2 overs.
Just when everything was going KKR’s way, Amit Mishra dismissed Gill in the ninth over with KKR scorecard reading 72/2. Andre Russell (13), too, didn’t spent much time in the middle and KKR were reduced to 94/3 in 9.5 overs.
Rana continued to kept the fight on, but he couldn’t convert it as Harshal Patel dismissed him in the 13th over. Rana’s innings contained four boundaries and as many sixes.
Within five runs, KKR lost their skipper Dinesh Karthik (6) and Pat Cummins (5), and DC strengthening their grip on the contest. The fall of Cummis left KKR reeling at 122/6.
There was, however, another twist in the story as Tripathi and Morgan added 78 runs in the next 31 balls, courtesy some massive hits into the stands, which saw KKR making a comeback in the match.
Anrich Nortje, however, didn’t let the KKR duo succeed as he dismissed a dangerous looking Morgan in the 19th over before Marcus Stoinis, who bowled an exceptional final over, accounted for the wicket of Tripathi with a toe-crushing yorker.
Despite the phenomenal batting by Morgan and Tripathi, KKR failed to cross the line by 18 runs.
For DC, Nortje was the wrecker-in-chief as he returned with figures of 3/33 while Patel bagged 2/34.
Earlier, opener Prithvi Shaw’s blistering 66 followed by Shreyas’s (unbeaten 88 off 38) carnage propelled DC to a mammoth 228/4 in the allotted 20 overs.
Apart from the duo, DC stumper Rishabh Pant also took full advantage of the short boundaries as he blasted 38 off 17 balls with the help of five boundaries and a six.
DC were off to a flying start, thanks to openers Shikhar Dhawan (26) and Shaw, who made sure that their side cross the 50-run mark in just 4.4 overs.
However, while trying to go for a maximum, Dhawan became a victim of Varun Chakravarthy in the sixth over with DC being on 56/1.
The dismissal didn’t affect DC much as incoming batter and Shaw kept going at a decent pace.
The duo steered their side to the three-digit mark in the 11th over before Shaw was packed back by Kamlesh Nagarkoti in the 13th over.
Shaw’s knock contained four boundaries and as many sixes.
Iyer and Pant then added 72 runs in the next 31 balls as they clobbered every KKR bowler who came in their way.
Andre Russell, finally, gave KKR some respite as he accounted for the wicket of Pant in the 18th over, which saw DC’s scorecard reading 201/3.
Iyer, on other hand, kept his lusty blows going before Russell struck again, this time in the final over to send back Marcus Stoinis (1). However, the damage was already done as DC posted a challenging target before their opponents with ease.
Iyer’s sparkling innings was decorated with seven fours and six massive hits into the stands.
Brief scores: Delhi Capitals 228/4 wkts in 20 overs (Shreyas Iyer 88 not out, Prithvi Shaw 66; Andre Russell 2/29) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 210/8 wkts in 20 overs (Nitish Rana 58, Eoin Morgan 44; Anrich Nortje 3/33) by 18 runs
The Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said Egypt has welcomed a peace deal signed between Sudan’s transitional government and rebel groups. He added that the move reflected “the rational African will” and ushered in a new era of hope and prosperity.
On Saturday, an Egyptian delegation, headed by Madbouly, witnessed the signing of the deal in the Sudanese city of Juba which will end the decades-long regional conflicts, the Al Ahram online newspaper reported.
The agreement was signed between the Sudanese transitional government, represented by paramilitary commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, and the Sudan Revolutionary Front, which comprises rebel groups from the Darfur region, as well as the southern states of Blue Nile and South Kordofan.
Representing Egypt, Madbouly signed the deal as a guarantor.
The agreement was also signed by Chad, Qatar, the African Union (AU), the European Union (EU) and the UN, who also put their names to the agreement as guarantors.
Addressing the media later in the day, the Prime Minister said: “Egypt appreciates the serious and good efforts exerted by Sudan since the launch of the Juba negotiating platform, which has culminated with the inking of the final agreement.”
He further said “the enforcement of the deal is more important than signing it”, adding that political, economic, developmental, security, and social responsibilities oblige all signatories and regional and international parties to support post-peace entitlements, Al Ahram reported.
In a separate statement, the Egyptian cabinet said the move represented a decisive step in the efforts exerted over many decades to establish comprehensive peace throughout Sudan.
“Within the framework of the unified destiny and the bonds of brotherhood and solidarity that have brought the two countries together since ancient times, Egypt will spare no effort to work to support stability, prosperity and development throughout Sudan, in order to meet the legitimate aspirations of the brotherly Sudanese people for a better tomorrow,” it added.
US President Donald Trump has been admitted to the nation’s premier military hospital in Washington for several days after testing positive for Covid-19, limiting his campaigning in the crucial month before the November 3 presidential election.
His doctor Sean Conley said on Friday night that he had recommended moving Trump to the Walter Reed Military Medical Centre after consulting with specialists from there and the Johns Hopkins University.
The Walter Reed hospital, which has among the best equipment and experts is usually the first stop for military personnel wounded in wars abroad.
Trump, whose campaign style is whipping up crowds to a frenzy, will feel trapped for several days during the countdown to the election in a hospital by a virus he had underrated.
“The President will be working from the presidential offices at Walter Reed (hospital) for the next few days,” his spokesperson Kayleigh McEnany said on Friday evening.
Conley said that Trump was “doing well” and “is not requiring supplemental oxygen”.
Trump has started Remdesivir therapy in consultation with specialists and had taken the first dose, Conley said.
Remdesivir is an anti-viral medication originally developed to fight the Ebola virus but is being tried against Covid-19.
The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has given it an emergency use authorisation “for the treatment of suspected or laboratory-confirmed Covid-19 in adults and children hospitalised with severe disease”, according to the agency’s website.
The drug developed by Gilead Sciences is given intravenously.
Earlier on Friday, Conley had said that Trump was being treated with another experimental medication, a “polyclonal antibody cocktail” produced by the biotech company, Regeneron, that has not yet been approved by the FDA as a treatment for Covid-19.
The short memo from his doctor did not say if the Regerneron medication was still being used and if not a reason for the discontinuation.
Regeneron had reported on Tuesday that its medication had shown positive results in 275 patients during trials.
Trump has been advocating the use of medicines not fully approved by the FDA for treating Covid-19.
He also received other medicines including aspirin, zinc, a natural hormone melatonin, vitamin D and the antacid famotidine, the doctor said.
It did not appear that he received hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), which he had taken as a preventive around the time his valet became infected in May and got India to send a huge consignment for use as a cure or prophylactic.
Meanwhile in a video recorded of him standing up and speaking informally at the White House, Trump said: “I’m going to Walter Reed Hospital. I think I’m doing very well, but we’re going to make sure that things work out. The First Lady is doing very well.”
Trump’s wife, Melania, who also tested positive for the coronavirus is staying on at the White House.
The 74-year-old President, who is also overweight at 124 kg, has three high-risk factors for the coronavirus, with which he was diagnosed on Thursday.
McEnany said that “President Trump remains in good spirits, has mild symptoms, and has been working throughout the day.”
Trump appeared fit enough to walk unaided to the helicopter that took him to the Walter Reed medical centre where Presidents usually are treated and has facilities for them to continue working.
His campaign plans have been cancelled for the coming days, Campaign Senior Adviser Corey Lewandowski told CBS News.
Till recently, Democratic Party candidate Joe Biden had been conducting a low-key campaign prompting Trump to ridicule him as “Basement Biden” because he was using video facilites set up in the basement to get his message out.
But now, Trump will have to campaign from a hospital while Biden is out running carefully arranged public events with coronavirus precautions.
At a campaign event in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Biden on Friday said he and his wife Jill were offering prayers for Trump and the First Lady.
“This is not a matter of politics. It’s a bracing reminder to all of us that we have to take this virus seriously.”
While Trump has been dismissive of the Covid-19 precautions like wearing masks and even ridiculed Biden for his big masks, the Democrat has been an advocate of following medical guidance.
Exhorting Trump supporters to also wear masks, he said that according to experts wearing masks for 100 days could save 100,000 lives.
Biden, who had shared a stage during Tuesday’s debate with Trump, said that he had taken two Covid-19 tests that came negative before embarking on Friday’s campaign.
The Hill quoted two anonymous sources in the Biden campaign as saying that they will not be running negative ads against Trump for now.
A Biden ally was quoted by The Hill as saying: “The VP (Vice President Biden) can’t say ‘God Bless this family’ and then trash him in ads.”
In a tweet on Friday, Senate Judicial Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham said: “The President was in good spirits this morning when I spoke with him and very engaged in the upcoming hearing regarding Supreme Court nominee, Judge Amy Barrett.”
That was one of the key issue facing Trump, who has to get the conservative judge to confirmed by the Senate to serve on the Supreme Court.
The other is the Covid-19 relief package for businesses, individuals, public institutions and state and local governments on which the Republicans and Democrats are deeply divided.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said that in the changed scenario a compromise seemed within reach.
She asked airlines to hold off on threatened furloughs because a deal to help them was likely.
The Democratic Party-controlled House of Representatives passed a $2.2 trillion stimulus package, which faces opposition in the Republican-controlled Senate.
The markets generally shrugged off Trump’s ailment.
After having been down by 450 points, the Dow Jones Index closed down only 134 points or 0.5 per cent.
S&P was down 1 per cent and the NASDAQ 2.2 per cent, not unusual market volatility.
Trump tweeted early Friday morning that he and his wife had tested positive for coronavirus.
On Thursday, one of Trump’s closest aides, Hope Hicks who had travelled with him on Tuesday and Friday on the Air Force One, had tested positive for the disease.
Members of Trump’s family who had undergone tests were found to be uninfected, as also senior officials including Vice President Mike Pence.
Meanwhile, a poll conducted on Friday by Morning Consult found that 40 per cent of Democrats were “happy” about Trump’s diagnosis, while 55 per cent of Republicans were “sad”.
The European Union (EU) has said it could impose sanctions on Turkey over “provocations and pressures” in a row with Greece over energy resources and maritime borders.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called on Ankara to “abstain from unilateral actions” in the eastern Mediterranean. She spoke early on Friday during a meeting of EU leaders in Brussels, the BBC reported.
Earlier, Turkey and Greece set up a military hotline to try to reduce the risk of clashes in the region.
Tensions rose earlier this year when Turkey sent a ship into a disputed area to search for potentially rich oil and gas deposits.
Von der Leyen told reporters that the EU wanted “a positive and constructive relationship with Turkey and this would be also be very much in Ankara’s interest”.
“But it will only work if the provocations and pressures stop,” she said. “We therefore expect that Turkey from now on abstains from unilateral actions. In case of such renewed actions by Ankara the EU will use all its instruments and options available. We have a toolbox that we can apply immediately.”
After their late-night meeting, EU members agreed to review Turkey’s behaviour in December and impose sanctions if “provocations” had not stopped.
Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, posting on Twitter after the meeting, said: “The EU issues a clear threat of sanctions against Turkey should it continue to violate international law.”
European Council President Charles Michel said the EU was offering Turkey closer relations on trade and other areas but holding out the threat of sanctions if tensions in the Mediterranean did not de-escalate.
The European Union and Turkey have long held a fragile relationship.
Turkey has been a long-term candidate for membership of the EU but efforts have stalled. EU leaders have criticised Turkey’s record on human rights and the rule of law, in particular in the wake of the 2016 failed military coup.
Despite the strains, Turkey remains an important partner for the EU. Turkey hosts millions of migrants and struck a deal with the EU that limited the numbers arriving in Greece.
Greece and Turkey are both Nato members, but have a history of border disputes and competing claims over maritime rights.
Tensions flared in August when Ankara sent the research ship into an area south of the Greek island of Kastellorizo which is claimed by Greece, Turkey and Cyprus.
“India espouses the policy of ‘No First Use’ against nuclear weapon states and non-use against non-nuclear weapon states,” Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla declared at a high-level meeting of the General Assembly…reports Asian Lite News
A nuclear power, India has reiterated its commitment on Gandhi Jayanti to its policy of ‘No First Use’ of nuclear weapons and to a complete non-discriminatory nuclear disarmament.
“India espouses the policy of ‘No First Use’ against nuclear weapon states and non-use against non-nuclear weapon states,” Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla declared at a high-level meeting of the General Assembly on Friday while clearing any doubts that New Delhi was moving away from it.
Thinking aloud, India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had said last August that “till today, our nuclear policy is ano first use’. What happens in future depends on the circumstances”.
But Pakistan, which does not have a ‘No First Use’ policy, twisted it as a propaganda piece and some Western think tanks and publications amplified it as India was changing it.
But Shringla’s statement clearly set out that there was no change in the policy.
The high-level session was for the UN’s commemoration of the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, which was observed this year on October 2, along with the International Day of Non-violence that annually honours Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary.
“Mahatma Gandhi, whose birth anniversary we celebrate today had said, ‘whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it’. It is in this spirit that India is ready to work with other States towards the achievement of the noble goal of world free of nuclear weapons.
“India reiterates its long-standing and unwavering commitment to universal, verifiable and non-discriminatory nuclear disarmament leading to the complete elimination of nuclear weapons,” Shringla said.
The key phrase in his statement is “non-discriminatory”, which means that there would be no exceptions to nuclear disarmament as it is under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty that sets a class of countries that are allowed nukes.
“We believe that nuclear disarmament can be achieved through a step-by-step process underwritten by a universal commitment and an agreed multilateral framework,” Shringla said, adding that a meaningful dialogue among all countries with nuclear weapons was needed for building trust and confidence.
Speaking at the UN observance of the International Day of Nonviolence event, India’s Permanent Representative T.S. Tirumurti noted that fittingly the high-level meeting on total elimination of nuclear weapons was also being held on Gandhi’s birth anniversary.
