Another 595 people have died in a 24-hour period, bringing the total coronavirus-related deaths in Britain to 50,365, the figures showed.

Britain is the fifth country in the world to hit the tragic milestone of 50,000 Covid-19 deaths, following the US, Brazil, India and Mexico, the Xinhua news agency reported.

Another 22,950 people have tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 1,256,725, the data showed.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that the grim figures showed that “we are not out of the woods yet.”

“Every death is a tragedy… we mourn everybody who’s gone,” he said.

“I do think that we have got now to a different phase in the way that we treat it,” Johnson said, referring to the country’s mass testing program and the “realistic prospect” of a vaccine.

“It does still require everybody to follow the guidance, do the right thing, to suppress the disease in a way that we all understand,” he added.

WHO calls for ‘fair allocation’ of Covid 19 vaccine

Based on current projections, Pfizer and BioNTech expect to produce globally up to 50 million vaccine doses this year and up to 1.3 billion doses in 2021…reports Asian Lite News

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has called for “fair allocation” of a Covid-19 vaccine after drugmakers Pfizer and BioNTech this week said that their vaccine candidate was found to be more than 90 per cent effective in preventing the disease in interim analysis of data.

Addressing the member states at the 73rd World Health Assembly on Tuesday, the WHO chief said that the UN health agency welcomes Pfizer’s “promising news” and expect additional effective vaccines in near future along with advances in testing and therapeutics.

“I called on Member States to reiterate their commitment to fair allocation of a #COVID19 vaccine. We mustn’t leave any country behind in the response,” Ghebreyesus said.

Based on current projections, Pfizer and BioNTech expect to produce globally up to 50 million vaccine doses this year and up to 1.3 billion doses in 2021.

The issue of challenges of distributing a potential vaccine such as the one being developed by Pfizer and BioNTech was also raised by Matshidiso Moeti, WHO’s Regional Director for Africa.

“The exciting news yesterday (Monday) of a possible effective vaccine becoming available presages significant cold chains challenges for African countries by the type of vaccine that that is. Which will need to be factored into the support to be provided,” Moeti said.

In his opening speech at the World Health Assembly on Monday, the WHO chief said that a vaccine is needed urgently to control the pandemic.

“But as you know, it will not fix the vulnerabilities at its roots,” he said.

“A vaccine cannot address the global under-investment in essential public health functions and resilient health systems, nor the urgent need for a ‘One Health’ approach that encompasses the health of humans, animals and the planet we share.

“There is no vaccine for poverty, hunger, climate change or inequality,” the WHO chief said.

Utah declares State of emergency

According to Monday’s report by local KSL-TV, the state experienced a 46 per cent increase in new cases in the last two weeks….reports Asian Lite News

Due to an unabated surge in the number of new coronavirus cases, Utah Governor Gary Herbert has declared a two-week emergency in the US state.

In an effort to stem the spread of the virus, Herbert has declared a series of measures, including limiting casual social gatherings to household-only; putting all athletic and intramural events on hold; and a state-wide mask mandate in public where six feet of physical distancing is not possible, reports Xinhua news agency.

Herbert, who has supported wearing masks but had resisted imposing a mandate before, said in a video posted on Twitter on Monday that the state cannot afford to debate this issue any longer.

“Individual freedom is certainly important, and it is our rule of law that protects that freedom.

“We must do more, and we must do it now. This is about much more than just mandates. This is about personal responsibility.

“Due to the alarming rate of Covid-19 infections within our state, tonight I issued a new state of emergency with several critical changes to our response.

“These changes are not shutting down our economy, but are absolutely necessary to save lives and hospital capacity,” he added in the video.

According to Monday’s report by local KSL-TV, the state experienced a 46 per cent increase in new cases in the last two weeks.

On Sunday, the pandemic hit a record-high seven-day positive test average of 20.6 per cent cases per day.

Meanwhile, the state also reported a new high of 424 hospitalizations on Sunday, bringing the state’s ICU occupancy to a record-high 78.2 per cent.

Since the onset of the pandemic, Utah has registered more than 135,000 confirmed cases and 661 deaths.
