Trump moved to military hospital

US President Donald Trump has been admitted to the nation’s premier military hospital in Washington for several days after testing positive for Covid-19, limiting his campaigning in the crucial month before the November 3 presidential election.

His doctor Sean Conley said on Friday night that he had recommended moving Trump to the Walter Reed Military Medical Centre after consulting with specialists from there and the Johns Hopkins University.

The Walter Reed hospital, which has among the best equipment and experts is usually the first stop for military personnel wounded in wars abroad.

Trump, whose campaign style is whipping up crowds to a frenzy, will feel trapped for several days during the countdown to the election in a hospital by a virus he had underrated.

“The President will be working from the presidential offices at Walter Reed (hospital) for the next few days,” his spokesperson Kayleigh McEnany said on Friday evening.

Conley said that Trump was “doing well” and “is not requiring supplemental oxygen”.

Trump has started Remdesivir therapy in consultation with specialists and had taken the first dose, Conley said.

Remdesivir is an anti-viral medication originally developed to fight the Ebola virus but is being tried against Covid-19.

The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has given it an emergency use authorisation “for the treatment of suspected or laboratory-confirmed Covid-19 in adults and children hospitalised with severe disease”, according to the agency’s website.

The drug developed by Gilead Sciences is given intravenously.

Earlier on Friday, Conley had said that Trump was being treated with another experimental medication, a “polyclonal antibody cocktail” produced by the biotech company, Regeneron, that has not yet been approved by the FDA as a treatment for Covid-19.

The short memo from his doctor did not say if the Regerneron medication was still being used and if not a reason for the discontinuation.

Regeneron had reported on Tuesday that its medication had shown positive results in 275 patients during trials.

Trump has been advocating the use of medicines not fully approved by the FDA for treating Covid-19.

He also received other medicines including aspirin, zinc, a natural hormone melatonin, vitamin D and the antacid famotidine, the doctor said.

It did not appear that he received hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), which he had taken as a preventive around the time his valet became infected in May and got India to send a huge consignment for use as a cure or prophylactic.

Meanwhile in a video recorded of him standing up and speaking informally at the White House, Trump said: “I’m going to Walter Reed Hospital. I think I’m doing very well, but we’re going to make sure that things work out. The First Lady is doing very well.”

Trump’s wife, Melania, who also tested positive for the coronavirus is staying on at the White House.

The 74-year-old President, who is also overweight at 124 kg, has three high-risk factors for the coronavirus, with which he was diagnosed on Thursday.

McEnany said that “President Trump remains in good spirits, has mild symptoms, and has been working throughout the day.”

Trump appeared fit enough to walk unaided to the helicopter that took him to the Walter Reed medical centre where Presidents usually are treated and has facilities for them to continue working.

His campaign plans have been cancelled for the coming days, Campaign Senior Adviser Corey Lewandowski told CBS News.

Till recently, Democratic Party candidate Joe Biden had been conducting a low-key campaign prompting Trump to ridicule him as “Basement Biden” because he was using video facilites set up in the basement to get his message out.

But now, Trump will have to campaign from a hospital while Biden is out running carefully arranged public events with coronavirus precautions.

At a campaign event in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Biden on Friday said he and his wife Jill were offering prayers for Trump and the First Lady.

“This is not a matter of politics. It’s a bracing reminder to all of us that we have to take this virus seriously.”

While Trump has been dismissive of the Covid-19 precautions like wearing masks and even ridiculed Biden for his big masks, the Democrat has been an advocate of following medical guidance.

Exhorting Trump supporters to also wear masks, he said that according to experts wearing masks for 100 days could save 100,000 lives.

Biden, who had shared a stage during Tuesday’s debate with Trump, said that he had taken two Covid-19 tests that came negative before embarking on Friday’s campaign.

The Hill quoted two anonymous sources in the Biden campaign as saying that they will not be running negative ads against Trump for now.

A Biden ally was quoted by The Hill as saying: “The VP (Vice President Biden) can’t say ‘God Bless this family’ and then trash him in ads.”

In a tweet on Friday, Senate Judicial Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham said: “The President was in good spirits this morning when I spoke with him and very engaged in the upcoming hearing regarding Supreme Court nominee, Judge Amy Barrett.”

That was one of the key issue facing Trump, who has to get the conservative judge to confirmed by the Senate to serve on the Supreme Court.

The other is the Covid-19 relief package for businesses, individuals, public institutions and state and local governments on which the Republicans and Democrats are deeply divided.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said that in the changed scenario a compromise seemed within reach.

She asked airlines to hold off on threatened furloughs because a deal to help them was likely.

The Democratic Party-controlled House of Representatives passed a $2.2 trillion stimulus package, which faces opposition in the Republican-controlled Senate.

The markets generally shrugged off Trump’s ailment.

After having been down by 450 points, the Dow Jones Index closed down only 134 points or 0.5 per cent.

S&P was down 1 per cent and the NASDAQ 2.2 per cent, not unusual market volatility.

Trump tweeted early Friday morning that he and his wife had tested positive for coronavirus.

On Thursday, one of Trump’s closest aides, Hope Hicks who had travelled with him on Tuesday and Friday on the Air Force One, had tested positive for the disease.

Members of Trump’s family who had undergone tests were found to be uninfected, as also senior officials including Vice President Mike Pence.

Meanwhile, a poll conducted on Friday by Morning Consult found that 40 per cent of Democrats were “happy” about Trump’s diagnosis, while 55 per cent of Republicans were “sad”.

Lebanon announces ‘lockdown’ in more than 100 districts

State institutions and places of worship would close, but health centers and delivery services would be exempted…Reports Asian Lite News

Lebanon is to announce lockdown in 111 villages and towns for a week after a series of record novel coronavirus daily infection rates, the interior ministry said Friday.Arab News Reports

The move came after widespread objections to a nationwide lockdown in August, as the country faces its worst economic crisis in decades.

From early Sunday and for eight days in the villages listed, residents were to “remain at home,” and “wear a mask covering their mouth and nose if forced to go out,” the ministry said in a statement.

State institutions and places of worship would close, but health centers and delivery services would be exempted, it added.

The head of a major Beirut public hospital battling Covid-19, Firass Abiad, welcomed the new district-by-district approach.
“This will help identify hotspots and (implement) a more focused approach to restrictive measures. This can be a good alternative to the unpopular total lockdown,” he said on Twitter.

Cases have spiked in the aftermath of a massive explosion at the Beirut port on August 4 that killed more than 190 people and overwhelmed the capital’s health services, with thousands of wounded.

The country has recorded 40,868 Covid-19 cases since February, including 374 deaths.Authorities fear that a major spike would overwhelm the country’s fragile health sector.

Trump, Melania Test Covid-19 Positive

US President Donald Trump on Friday announced that he and his wife Melania have tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

“Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for Covid-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this together,” he said in a tweet.

The next course of action for the President and the First Lady was not immediately clear as he has events scheduled for Friday in Florida and Saturday in Wisconsin.

The announcement came after White House adviser Hope Hicks, one of Trump’s closest aide, was confirmed to have tested positive for the virus on Thursday.

She had travelled with the President on Air Force One earlier this week, an informed source told The Hill news website.

After the revelation, Trump had tweeted: “Hope Hicks, who has been working so hard without even taking a small break, has just tested positive for Covid 19. Terrible.

“The First Lady and I are waiting for our test results. In the meantime, we will begin our quarantine process.”

Also in a statement, a White House official said contact tracing has been done, “and the appropriate notifications and recommendations have been made”, The Hill news website reported.

Hicks is the latest White House aide to test positive for the virus which has so far infected 7,277,352 people in the US and killed 207,791 others, making it the worst-hit country in the world.

National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien had tested positive, as well as a White House valet who serves the President.

Katie Miller, the Vice President’s communications director and the wife of Trump senior adviser Stephen Miller, were also infected.

Covid 19: Spanish minister warns Madrid of serious risk

The Spanish government has urged authorities in Madrid to tighten coronavirus restrictions across the city, warning of a “serious risk” to residents if they do not.

Madrid extended restrictions in Covid-19 hotspots on Friday but rejected calls for a city-wide lockdown, the BBC reported.

On Saturday Spain’s Health Minister Salvador Illa said current restrictions did not go far enough.

He said it was “time to act with determination” to control the pandemic.

“There is a serious risk for inhabitants, for the neighbouring regions,” Illa said, calling on the capital’s regional authorities to “put the health of citizens first” and impose a partial lockdown on the entire city.

Spain’s regions are in charge of healthcare and so the central government does not have the power to impose the restrictions it prefers.

Madrid is again at the epicentre of Spain’s coronavirus outbreak, as it was during the first peak earlier this year. The country recorded a further 12,272 cases on Friday, bringing the official total to 716,481, the highest infection tally in western Europe.

Spain and many other countries in the northern hemisphere have seen a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic in recent weeks.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a stark warning about the resurgence of the virus in Europe and elsewhere as winter approaches.

European countries were seeing “worrying increases of the disease”, with “a small uptick in deaths in older people” that will inevitably increase, Dr Mike Ryan, head of the WHO’s emergencies team, said on Friday.

Dr Ryan questioned whether European countries had “really exhausted all the tools” at their disposal to prevent a second round of national lockdowns.

“Lockdowns are almost a last resort – and to think that we’re back in last-resort territory in September, that’s a pretty sobering thought,” Dr Ryan told reporters at the WHO’s headquarters in Geneva.
