Kristen Stewart joins Berlin Film Festival

Stewart recently finished directing her first feature, “The Chronology of Water”, and she’s currently working on a paranormal reality series, for which she recently issued an open casting call. She is exec producing the project, which focuses on LGBTQ+ ghost hunters…reports Asian Lite News

The Berlinale red carpet became a protest platform against the Iranian regime when a group of Iranian filmmakers and talents, joined by jury President Kristen Stewart, chanted “Women, Life, Freedom!”

They also demanded the release of imprisoned journalists and an Iranian rapper, reports ‘Variety’.

Actress Golshifteh Farahani, who is also on the jury; “Holy Spider” actress Zar Amir Ebrahimi; and “The Siren” director Sepideh Farsi were among dozens of Iranian film professionals participating in the protests hosted by Berlinale co-directors Mariette Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian.

Protesters with signs demanded freedom for female Iranian journalists Niloofar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi who are behind bars, accused of “conspiring against national security” for being the first to report on Mahsa Amini’s death, and for the release of dissident Iranian hip hop artist Toomaj Salehi who has been accused of spreading propaganda and could face the death penalty.

As per’aVariety’, the Berlin red carpet protest was preceded by a panel on ‘The Role of Cinema and the Arts in the Iranian Revolution’ with panellists including Ebrahimi and Farsi who both spoke about their hope that the current wave of protests sparked by the death of Amini, while in police custody for not wearing a head veil properly, could topple the current Iranian regime.  The Berlinale red carpet became a protest platform against the Iranian regime when a group of Iranian filmmakers and talents, joined by jury President Kristen Stewart, chanted “Women, Life, Freedom!”

‘Movies will never go away’

Berlin Film Festival jury President Kristen Stewart doesn’t buy the talk that movies are dead. At a press conference in Germany on Thursday afternoon to commemorate the launch of the 73rd annual Berlinale, she declared that cinema will live forever, reports ‘Variety’.

“Take a quick glance at your rear view mirror,” said Stewart, taking questions from reporters, according to ‘Variety’. “We have never stopped telling each other stories.”

She then nodded to headlines about weakened international box office receipts as a result of the pandemic. “How much it costs, obviously like we’re headed towards oblivion on that one. I also think that there’s a sort of, like, vital, desperate need in all of us to create something. And yeah, I think when you start really fixating on, like, the industry, it’s easy to be like, ‘Oh, God, it’s all falling apart!’ But I just think that there’s something vital, that’s undeniable, will never go away,” ‘Variety’ quotes Stewart as saying.

Stewart first attended the Berlinale in 2010 with the independent production, “Welcome to the Rileys”, alongside director Jake Scott.

“I guess in full transparency, I’m kind of shaking,” she said about her role as the festival’s President, according to ‘Variety’. “It’s not a weight that I don’t fully understand. I’m just ready, ready to be changed by all the films and changed by the people around us. I think that’s what we’re here for.”

Stewart recently finished directing her first feature, “The Chronology of Water”, and she’s currently working on a paranormal reality series, for which she recently issued an open casting call. She is exec producing the project, which focuses on LGBTQ+ ghost hunters.

Gabriel LaBelle: Being in any movie is very intimidating

Talking about getting into the skin to play Spielberg in the film, LaBelle had about a month of preparation…reports Asian Lite News

Hollywood star Gabriel LaBelle plays Sammy Fabelman in Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated directorial ‘The Fablemans’. He said that working with the great award-winning filmmaker was “incredibly intimidating”.

‘The Fabelmans’ is a coming-of-age drama film directed by Spielberg, who co-wrote and produced it with Tony Kushner. The film is a semi-autobiographical story loosely based on Spielberg’s adolescence and first years as a filmmaker, told through an original story of the fictional Sammy Fabelman, a young aspiring filmmaker who explores how the power of films can help him see the truth about his dysfunctional family and those around him.

It stars Gabriel LaBelle as Sammy, alongside Michelle Williams and Paul Dano among many others.

Asked if he found it intimidating to work with Spielberg, LaBelle told: “Yes,incredibly. You know being in any movie is very intimidating. You do not want to do a bad job but this is directed by Steven Spielberg. He has a high bar for the quality of films he makes.”

The Fabelmans

“He has expectations and you want to live up to that. He knows what he is looking for and you just want to honour that story and tell his story in the best way you can.”

“This movie is about his life. You do not want to ruin Steven Spielberg’s life,” he added.

So, did that add to the pressure? The 20-year-old actor said: “Yes. It was incredibly intimidating. So you just use that as a fuel to do the best you can and dedicate as much time as possibly you can to making that film.”

‘The Fabelmans’ has been nominated in the upcoming Oscar 2023. It is contending in the categories of Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Production Design and Best Original Score.

“When I first read the script I was so impressed. It’s the greatest thing I have ever read. Tony Kushner, a great Pulitzer prize winning playwright, and Steven Spielberg the greatest filmmaker of all times Michelle Williams and Paul Dano will be acting in it and John is going to be making the music.. I am not surprised that they all did really good jobs in making this movie and I am just happy for the ride,” he said.

Talking about getting into the skin to play Spielberg in the film, LaBelle had about a month of preparation.

“I expected him to sit me down and tell me ‘This is what it means to be me.’ He didn’t do that at all. I had to find him. I had to ask him ‘how much of the script really happened to you’ and he said ‘all of it’. I was like ‘OMG, so just’ I asked him as many questions as possible and what it was like for him, what his perspectives were, relationships – just understand him and why he’s telling this story and what this story means to him. So, we broke down the script and it’s themes.”

Gabriel LaBelle

“I used his experience to influence my preparation. Then because as a child, he documented his parents, he filmed his family, so often, I got to watch some of that footage. I could see how he walked, stood up, and what his smile was. Physically I could resemble him and emotionally I could resemble him but in terms of behaviour I was free to do what I want which was a really incredible experience.”

‘The Fabelmans’ is produced by Reliance Entertainment. The film was re-released in India on February 10.

Will Smith misses hip-hop jubilee tribute

Smith announced ‘Bad Boys 4’ earlier this week in a video with his franchise co-star Martin Lawrence, who proclaimed, “It’s about that time…reports Asian Lite News

The 65th Grammy Awards celebrated 50 years of hip-hop, but Will Smith was absent from the tribute. According to Questlove, quoted by ‘Variety’, Smith was originally supposed to be a part of the tribute but had to back out due to his ‘Bad Boys 4’ production commitments.

“I’ll give the spoiler alert away. Will Smith was a part of the festivities tonight, but they started shooting ‘Bad Boys 4’ this week,” Questlove told Marc Malkin of ‘Variety’ on the red carpet. “There were a lot of preliminary shots that he had to do, so we had to lose Will.”

Questlove went on to say that he knew getting Smith for the tribute was “a shot in the dark”, because the actor is “always shooting movies”.

The four-time Grammy winner told ‘Variety’ that the celebration “had a lot of people, and some of them have other jobs,” adding that Ice-T, Queen Latifah and L.L. Cool J were participating in the tribute but had to “leave their respective shows” to join the celebration.

The original tribute, Questlove said, was going to be 23 minutes long, but it had been cut down to 14 minutes. “It’s going to be amazing,” he promised viewers of ‘Variety’ from the red carpet.

Smith announced ‘Bad Boys 4’ earlier this week in a video with his franchise co-star Martin Lawrence, who proclaimed, “It’s about that time!”

Smith most recently starred in ‘Emancipation’ and won the Academy Award for best lead actor last year for his role in ‘King Richard’. Immediately after he slapped presenter Chris Rock live onstage at the Oscars 2022, Questlove won the Academy Award for best documentary for ‘Summer of Soul’.

Anoushka to perform at Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony

Anoushka Shankar says, “What a true honor to be invited as the Inaugural Visiting Professor in Music Business at Oxford University! I’m deeply grateful to embark upon this new journey.”…reports Asian Lite News

Kicking off the proceedings for the 65th annual Grammy Awards, the Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony will return to the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on 5th February 2023. In an exciting development, the ceremony will be marked by a stirring performance by current Grammy nominee Anoushka Shankar, making it her third Grammy performance.

The masterful sitar player, producer, film composer, activist, and nine-time Grammy Award Nominee will perform alongside vocalist Arooj Aftab on their Grammy -nominated track Udhero Na from Arooj’s new album, Vulture Prince.

While Udhero Na is up for Best Global Music Performance, Anoushka’s latest album, Between Us (Live) with Metropole Orkest & Jules Buckley featuring Manu Delago has also been nominated for Best Global Music Album this year. This earns Anoushka the massive coup of being the first Indian female musician to receive two Grammy nominations in one year.

Anoushka Shankar said, “I’m genuinely over the moon to be performing at the Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony for the third time. This time I’m excited to share the stage with the wonderful Arooj Aftab, playing her beautiful song Udhero Na. I’m grateful my music on this song and on my album Between Us has been recognized with a nomination again and am proud to represent India and my instrument, the sitar, on this world stage.”

This announcement coincides with Anoushka’s fresh inaugural empanelment as a Visiting Professor in Music at Oxford University. This new role by the Oxford Faculty of Music, in conjunction with the Said Business School and Jesus College is designed to recognize the achievements and contributions of diverse figures across the music industry, and to forge connections and expand the dialogue between students and academics in the University and the wider industry.

In 2016, in a similar vein, Anoushka made an impactful presence within the UK education system, when she became one of the first five female composers to be added to the UK A-level music syllabus, a move that heralded a more diverse, inclusive, and representative syllabus and guaranteed better female representation in the Western classical tradition.

Anoushka Shankar further adds, “What a true honor to be invited as the Inaugural Visiting Professor in Music Business at Oxford University! I’m deeply grateful to embark upon this new journey.”

The award ceremony will stream live on Sun, Feb. 5, 2023, at 3:30 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. PT on the Recording Academy’s YouTube channel and on live.grammy.com.

Cameron trimmed gun violence in ‘Avatar’

The filmmaker told ‘Esquire Middle East’ that he is no longer interested in fetishising guns in his action scenes given the rampant gun violence in the U.S…reports Asian Lite News

A lot has been said about the length of James Cameron’s long-awaited ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’.

The three-hour runtime has hardly stopped the film from topping box office charts around the world. Now Cameron has revealed the film would have run 10 minutes longer had he not cut out scenes with gun violence, reports Variety.

The filmmaker told ‘Esquire Middle East’ that he is no longer interested in fetishising guns in his action scenes given the rampant gun violence in the U.S.

“I actually cut about 10 minutes of the movie targeting gunplay action,” Cameron said quoted by Variety. “I wanted to get rid of some of the ugliness, to find a balance between light and dark. You have to have conflict, of course. Violence and action are the same thing, depending on how you look at it. This is the dilemma of every action filmmaker, and I’m known as an action filmmaker.”

As per Variety, Cameron said that he looks back on some films that he has made, and he doesn’t know if he would want to make that film now.

“I don’t know if I would want to fetishise the gun, like I did on a couple of ‘Terminator’ movies 30-plus years ago, in our current world. What’s happening with guns in our society turns my stomach.”

“I’m happy to be living in New Zealand where they just banned all assault rifles two weeks after that horrific mosque shooting a couple of years ago,” Cameron added as an aside.

Given Cameron’s comments, it’s safe to assume that action scenes in ‘The Terminator’ franchise will look a bit different should it ever return to the screen.

‘Elizabeth Debicki never been interested in being a celebrity’

Debicki also opened up about her own insecurities, admitting she spent much of her 20s questioning whether she was “beautiful” enough to be an actress…reports Asian Lite News

Actress Elizabeth Debicki claims portraying Diana, Princess of Wales reminded her of how dangerous fame can be.

The 32-year-old actress – who plays the late royal in the latest series of Netflix drama ‘The Crown’ – says she’s never been interested in being a celebrity but her latest role made her realise just how difficult fame can be for someone like Diana who was struggling with her personal life, reports aceshowbiz.com.

“As a concept, [fame is] not one that appeals to me. The main thing it does is take away one of the most valuable things people possess, which is a right to privacy,” she told Vogue Australia.

“I’ve seen that on people I really love and care for. Fame does not discriminate between how vulnerable you feel that day, what’s happening in your personal life, how tired you are, or how much you really don’t want your photograph taken.”

Debicki also opened up about her own insecurities, admitting she spent much of her 20s questioning whether she was “beautiful” enough to be an actress.

She added, “‘In the beginning, I was always like, ‘Why is this part of my job that I’m supposed to look beautiful and put dresses on and be good at it?’ I was always like, ‘I don’t know how to do this. Am I enough?’ “

However, now she’s in her 30s, Elizabeth says she’s been able to shrug off worries about her appearance.

She previously opened up about the “pressure” of playing Diana in ‘The Crown’ and said it was particularly difficult when she had to wear a version of the late royal’s “revenge dress” – which she wore the night her estranged husband Charles, then Prince of Wales admitted he’d been unfaithful in a TV interview.

Debicki told Vogue UK, “The revenge dress was pressure … It’s a complex dress. I let the fittings happen around me while I thought about what the dress meant. Why this dress? She’d had it for two or three years. It was super risque at the time …”

“She was claiming the space. The way she walked out of that car, the luminosity, the strength of her as that car door opened, she was so fast and so forward. It’s an extraordinary thing to watch. To decide what you’re saying about yourself through fashion… it was a currency. An incredibly powerful currency.”

Andrew Morton, who is the biographer of Princess Diana, has shared that he was “left breathless” by Elizabeth Debicki’s portrayal of the royal family member in the recently released 5th season of the streaming show ‘The Crown’, reports Entertainment Weekly.

Morton wrote ‘Diana: Her True Story’ in collaboration with the Princess. On the shelves in July 1992, it revealed Diana’s unhappiness with her marriage to the unfaithful Prince Charles, her battle with bulimia, and her feelings of loneliness and depression.

Morton denied at the time that Diana had helped him write the book, even as ‘Diana: Her True Story’ became a publishing sensation, was translated into 29 languages, and reportedly sold five million copies around the world.

‘Entertainment Weekly’ reported that Morton’s work effectively signalled the end of the royal marriage, and in December 1992, Prime Minister John Major announced that the couple had separated. Morton and Diana’s collaboration on the book is detailed in the new season of the hit Netflix series.

“It left me breathless, and it took me back all those years,” Morton said in a ‘Good Morning America’ interview. “I mean, I don’t say this very often, but I was shaken.”

To write ‘Diana: Her True Story’, Morton sent questions to the princess via her friend Dr. James Colthurst. Diana then recorded answers to the author’s queries.

Entertainment Weekly further states that Morton said he was unaware of Diana’s desperate state of mind when he began the project.

“What I didn’t realise at the time was her sense of isolation, her sense of despair inside the royal system,” he said.

In October 1997, just months after the princess’ death in a Paris car crash, Morton published a new edition of the book titled ‘Diana: Her True Story in Her Own Words’.

This time, the author made clear that Diana had been the principal source for the original book and included edited transcripts of her recorded responses to his questions.

Morton acted as a consultant on season 5 of ‘The Crown’ and is played on the series by Andrew Steele.
