Importance of sun exposure in life

Sun exposure is crucial for our body to have a good regulatory system…writes N. LOTHUNGBENI HUMTSOE

“One of my most important rules in life is to take time to soak in the morning sun. I have been talking about the incredible benefits of being in the sun for more than 15 years now, and I encourage people, especially those burdened with excessive thoughts and laziness, to wake up, go out and stay under the sun, with no distractions. Not only does the sun create life, but it also nourishes life. It helps us thrive.

We were born under the sun, we grew up with food made by the sun and we ourselves cannot survive without sunlight. So why do we give it such less importance in our lives?”, says Radhika Iyer, founder of Anahata Organics and Raa Foundation.

Surya Namaskar is the first thing done in the morning in yoga as a salutation to the sun, showing respect to “the giver of life.” The sun is revered in Indian culture for its ability to provide energy and lift our spirits. Consider this: you’ve been in a dark room for two days, and on the third day, you open the window to let in some sunlight. What happens to your disposition? You most likely feel more awake, conscious, and energetic.

Sun exposure is crucial for our body to have a good regulatory system.

“Our circadian rhythm, or the biological clock, determines our mental and physical health. Your body’s clock responds to light as a signal to be awake and dark as a signal to fall asleep. When you go under the sun, your body starts working to provide your conscious mind with more energy to go through your day. This has an effect, as mentioned before, on your health as a whole”, adds Radhika, “Another crucial thing the sun provides us with is Vitamin D. Our body produces it naturally when exposed to the sun.

Vitamin D is what enables the body to build and maintain healthy bones. Your body can only absorb calcium when Vitamin D is present. It also facilitates your normal immune system and is linked to improved resistance to certain illnesses such as hypertension, heart stroke and IBS. It is also linked to lowering the effects of depression and helps regulate our mood.”

You can take control of your health by doing something as simple as getting 5 minutes of sunlight right after you wake up. The sun is a life-giver, and once you realise how interconnected we are with the universe and with nature, you can open your eyes to a new, more vibrant life.

Choose a pet-friendly vacation spot

Doesn’t it sound surreal? All you need to do is select a pet-friendly location and a reputable pet relocation company…writes N. LOTHUNGBENI HUMTSOE

Previously, when planning a vacation, pet parents had three options: leave their furry friends with family or friends, have someone else come to your house to care for them, or place them in a pet boarding facility.

What if we you can take your furry friends on holiday and have a great time without having to worry about their travel?

So why not use these relocation services to transport your pets to their desired vacation locations? They’ll be comfortable and safe, and you won’t have to worry about leaving them at home alone. Furthermore, you will be able to spend time with your pets without constantly worrying about their well-being. Doesn’t it sound surreal? All you need to do is select a pet-friendly location and a reputable pet relocation company.

Faisal Islam, co-founder, Carry My Pet said: “A common misconception about pet relocation or pet travel companies is that people only use their services when moving abroad, shifting bases, or relocating due to a job change or Covid-19-induced shifting. A pet travel company, on the other hand, is all about transporting your pet from one location to another, regardless of the reason for travel.

“Before planning a vacation with your furry friend, ensure that you choose a pet-friendly vacation spot. While it might sound difficult, it’s much easier than you think. Six out of ten Indians have a pet today, and thanks to the increasing number of pet lovers across the country, several tourist destinations have become pet-friendly. Cities like Kerala, Mussoorie, Goa, Ooty, Manali, and Puducherry, among others, have many hotels/homestays and cafes where pets are welcome. You just need to check the hotel’s restriction policies as some of them do not permit all breeds”.

Moving a pet can be tough, but good management can help you relax and spend paw-some time with your baby without having to leave them at home or with someone else. Next time you plan a trip, don’t hesitate. The pet-friendly hotels and accommodations love your pets as much as you do, and relocating your pets using professional pet relocation services will further remove your apprehensions about taking a trip with your babies. So, are you planning the vacation already?

Yoga for super immunity

According to yoga and psychology, other than the physical body, we have a conscious, subconscious and unconscious mind. A health problem can start from any of these three…writes BIJOYLAXMI HOTA

For yoga therapy to be fully effective, the initial treatment should be done away from home in a yogashram. At home, it may not be possible to relax deeply, and tension slows down the healing. Also, at home, the conditions that created the health problems in the first place, are still there and may counter yogas effects. The peaceful atmosphere of an ashram automatically relaxes the inmates.

Healing will be enhanced if the yogashram is in the mountains, surrounded by greenery. At such a place, not only will the relaxation and oxygenation of the body tissues be better, the concentration of prana will be the maximum. It has been seen that 300 cubic feet of the mountain air contains 5,000 units of prana against 50 units of this energy in a city office. Sea shore and riverbanks are the next best alternative.

Furthermore, at home, one cannot spare much time for yogic practices. Mostly, people spend about an hour on yoga, and that too doing only Hatha Yoga, i.e. asanas, pranayamas and occasional satkarma. But Hatha Yoga does not comprise the entire practice of yoga; it is just a part of this system. Hatha Yoga is meant to rectify faults only in the gross physical body. But we are much more than just a body.

According to yoga and psychology, other than the physical body, we have a conscious, subconscious and unconscious mind. A health problem can start from any of these three. However, it manifests on the physical body as that is the only aspect that can be seen. Therefore, unless the root cause is corrected, the resultant ailment cannot be cured.

Freeing the mind of a deep-rooted fault may not be achieved through one yoga. The ancient yogis realized that and developed other yogas, mainly Bhakti Yoga (the yoga of devotion), Raja Yoga (the yoga of concentration and meditation), Karma Yoga (yoga of action, where one does physical labour without expecting any material gains) and Gyana Yoga (the yoga of enquiry) to do that. Therefore, it is necessary to practise them all, at least in the beginning. People without any ailments also benefit from them as it clears their psyche of all unwanted past impressions that could lead to a disease later.

According to Swami Satyananda Saraswati, it is necessary to practise all the four yogas. He says that if one does not practise “Karma Yoga, you will experience frustration and disappointments and the consequent reactions in life; if you do not practice Bhakti Yoga, passions will rise high; if you do not practice Raja Yoga, your mind will be jumping like a drunken monkey; if you do not practice Gyana Yoga you won’t know why you are practicing all these things; and if you do not practice Hatha Yoga, you may not be able to practice any of them”.

In the yogashram, the entire day is filled with various other yogas besides the four main ones. They are: Nada Yoga, Mantra Yoga and Tantra Yoga, etc. Each yoga caters to one aspect of the human character and together they take care of the complete personality making the practitioner feel uniquely calm, elated, healed and invigorated. It is as if one gets a fresh body and mind. Everybody should experience the ashram life to realize how wonderful the effect of real yoga. The feeling cannot be described in words. One has to experience it to believe it.

The ancient wise of India knew the value of the combined yoga and made rules such that people practised them from childhood. At the tender age of seven or eight, every child was sent to a gurukul, i.e. the abode of a guru. There, while learning their future professional skills, the children were made to do yoga. For Gyana Yoga, they studied scriptures; for Raja Yoga, they meditated and practised asanas and pranayamas; for Bhakti Yoga, they performed religious rituals such as yagnyas and for Karma Yoga, it was hard physical labour.

Whether one was a prince or a pauper, he was made to do various chores such as gardening, chopping wood, drawing water from wells, tending to cattle, etc. All these yogas, along with the strict disciplined life, went a long way in building their health and character.

According to the vedas, the vedic man’s lifespan was at least a hundred years, and they spent the second half of their life alone in the forest, catering to their own various needs. Such a lifestyle indicates the physical and mental strength of people of ancient times. It is a far cry from the contemporary times, when after a certain age, we cannot do without drugs, hospitals, doctors, nurses and attendants.

Ideally, all yogas should be done every day, although in shorter versions. But if that is not be possible, one should go to the yogashram periodically. Those who do that find it helpful in remaining in the best of their health and face the challenges of life with equanimity. According to my Guruji, it is like recharging one’s inner battery to withstand the vagaries of living in complex society.

Rules of Yoga

* Yoga should be practised on an empty stomach. Food can be taken 10 minutes after the completion of the routine.

* Use a folded blanket or rug for yoga practice. No soft spongy mattress or mat should be used as they do not provide the needed support to your back.

* Face the east. Even when you lie down, your head should be towards that direction.

* Wear loose cotton clothes. Tight or synthetic ones restrict proper oxygenation of the system.

* Avoid plastic neti pot and non-stick pan to heat the water.

* No microwave for any heating. The vitamins may remain intact, but the prana will be gone.

Kids with mobiles at risk

It is only when they develop mental/physical disorders, they are brought to the clinic…reports Asian Lite News

Psychiatrists have warned parents against their children’s mobile addiction, following the murder of a young mother by her teenaged son in Lucknow when she tried to stop him from playing PUBG.

According to experts at the special clinic to treat online addictions at the psychiatry department of King George’s Medical University (KGMU), several cases are reported every month in which kids are found to be turning violent because of such gaming addictions.

Adarsh Tripathi, assistant professor from the psychiatry department of KGMU, said that on a weekly basis, KGMU clinic receives about eight to ten cases where children are addicted to gaming.

It has been found that though they are addicted to an alarming level, these children do not consider their behaviour a problem. In fact, even their parents do not react to their behaviour.

It is only when they develop mental/physical disorders, they are brought to the clinic.

“The number of children addicted to gaming might even be more as the parents only visit when these children become very violent. If such children are counselled on time, such issues can be resolved easily,” he said.

The most worrisome fact about these games is that there is no end to it.

“If you clear one level, you are introduced to another challenge. This keeps the young people captivated round the clock, and they get socially alienated,” he said.

Further elaborating on battle games, Tripathi said that in most of these games, after a certain stage, you are given a rank like ‘Colonel’, ‘Brigadier’, ‘General’, which acts as a motivator.

The young mind begins to think that he is getting powerful in the real world also. This illusion of power creates a negative impact on the mind of a child.

“In such a state where they feel empowered, if they are not able to play for the lack of money or other reasons, they take other routes,” he added.

The parents need to watch if the child is getting aggressive when he is not allowed to watch a show or play an online game on mobile, laptop.

“If they refuse to eat, and get stubborn with their demands, consider the situation alarming,” he said.

Shockingly, the 16-year-old who killed his mother because she stopped him from playing games, is unrepentant. He admitted to killing her when confronted by his father and did not display any emotion.

Dr Devashish Shukla of Balrampur hospital said that addiction begins with seemingly harmless games and then the child goes on to play battle games where he gets commands.

“This stage is dangerous because he crosses over from the real world into the virtual world and parents must identify behavioural changes before it is too late,” he added.

Dr Pawan Kumar Gupta of KGMU said that during the pandemic, mobile addiction had increased to abnormal levels and parents did not differentiate between online studies and online gaming.

How does diet play a role in body odour?

Spinach, lettuce, kale, arugula and other leafy green vegetables contain high levels of chlorophyll. Odour-inducing components in the body can be easily neutralised by chlorophyll…writes Lothungbeni Humtsoe

In simple terms, body odour is the smell your body exudes when sweat comes in contact with the bacteria. The odour is not a result of just sweat but the bacteria that causes the sweat to smell. The most common affected areas are the armpits, groin, and pubic areas.

While body odour is common in most people and the extent of the odour depends from person to person, an individual may be more prone to body odour if they are overweight, eat certain types of foods, have certain prior health conditions or are under stress.

There are many factors that cause our body to smell and according to Soumita Biswas, Chief Nutritionist, Aster RV Hospital, “Various factors like diet, sex, health, and medication contribute to body odour but the major contribution comes from bacterial activity on skin and gland secretions. There are three types of sweat glands present in the human body namely sebaceous glands, eccrine sweat glands and apocrine sweat glands. Body odour typically results from the apocrine sweat glands from which most chemical compounds are secreted that the microbiota present on the skin further processes into the substances that cause odour. Certain areas are more prone to this process, such as the underarm area, the navel area, the neck, the genitals and behind the ears. Largely the armpits are an area of concern in comparison to any other part of the body.”

“Diet can play a contributing role in body odour. Potent items like chilly, garlic, onion etc. can give a pungent odour to the sweat. A protein-rich diet is also believed to be a cause of body odour. If you are eating high levels of certain foods, foul-smelling compounds they contain may be excreted through your sweat glands to give an unpleasant odour. Those compounds are known as VOCs (volatile organic compounds), and they can produce some particularly pungent sweat, according to a New York-based dermatological study”, Soumita adds, “Increasing intake of certain nutrients helps reduce body odours.

Greens: Spinach, lettuce, kale, arugula and other leafy green vegetables contain high levels of chlorophyll. Odour-inducing components in the body can be easily neutralised by chlorophyll.

Fibre-rich Foods: Food stuff like peas, lentils, and beans are high in fibre content. Ensure you are eating enough of these as it facilitates digestion. Consequently, any smelly compounds in your food is processed more quickly and less can exit through sweat.

Citrus Fruits: The acids contained in citrus fruits like oranges, lemons and grapefruit encourage the passage of water through the body, which minimizes toxins. These can be consumed in form of fruit or fruit juices for maximum benefit.

Herbal Teas: Herbal teas such as chamomile, green tea and peppermint improve digestion hence preventing unwanted residuals in the gut which cause bad odour. Floral jasmine tea can actively help you smell fresher.

Your home speaks volumes about your personality, it’s an extension of you, do you agree?

Mira: I agree, your home is an extension of your personality and this stands true especially post pandemic and the second lockdown. During this time, our homes had become our safe space. We all, including me, spent and invested so much of our time at home with our loved ones. Your space proves to be an ideal reflection of yourself, your likes, dislikes, what moves you and what you believe keeps you sane.

How important is it to personalize your home with accessories once interior designers are done with it?

Mira: Getting your home designed is only half the job done. I personally believe personalizing your space makes a house a home. Personalizing helps me inspire the creativity in me and also makes my house more welcoming. It reflects my taste and what I truly believe in.

If the pandemic has taught us anything, is that when it comes to utility, spaces need to double up to cater to different needs of different members, do you agree?

Mira: Yes for sure, as I mentioned our homes are our sacred spaces especially post the pandemic. There is absolutely nowhere I’d rather be than at home with my loved ones. That being said, utility spaces differ from family to family but everyone loves a multi-function space that is personal to them. If you have kids like I do – you do require a dedicated space just for them. And H&M Home has just the ideal accessories for every kind of room and every kind of house!

When it comes to entertaining at home good quality server wear makes or breaks a soiree?

Mira: Most definitely, hosting guests comes with a whole lot of responsibility! For me, I always try to make dining a curated experience. Server wares and dinner wares are the true essence for that. For instance, for the table, I like to set it with a beautiful bunch of fresh flowers that straight away accentuates the look, paired with some gorgeous bowls, serving plates and a dedicated food cover completes the look. It is also comfort over fad for me. That is something I absolutely love about the kitchen and dinnerware collection at H&M Home – it so effortlessly makes dining experiences so gorgeous yet makes you feel at Home.

Your favorite pieces from the H&M Home collection?

Mira: I love the Gorgeous hand painted vases in grey, white and pink in two sizes perfect for both your living room and outdoor spaces to add a chic rustic vibe and this picturesque sunset blanket made in recycled cotton, soft and pretty at the same time. Choose right colour for your rug

If your rooms are monochromatic, you can experiment with patterned carpets. A patterned rug may bring your home to life if you’re comfortable mixing and matching patterns. Your furniture can serve as a starting point for this; match the tones of your furniture to the carpeting…writes N. Lothungbeni Humtsoe

Carpets come in a vast range of hues, so it’s important to pick wisely and personalise your space. You may select from solid to multi-coloured elements depending on what best fit your needs.

Here are a few simple guidelines by Chetan Mathur and Harshvardhan Ruia of Villedomo to help you choose the correct rug colour:

Match the carpeting to the decor of your space

Each place has its own personality and function. Recognise the function that your room will serve for you and select the appropriate hue. If you want to make a small place appear larger, use bright colours. For such rooms, pastel colours, white, or a combination of pale and bright colours are appropriate. Use subdued blue or green tones in a room that is overly adorned or in a setting where you wish to instil serenity. Monochromes are also a good choice for this type of setting. Choose colours like orange, crimson, or light green for your busy zones where you want a pop of colour. Dark tones of burgundy, cocoa, or navy are also popular for a deep, rich look. These colours add cosiness and warmth to the room while also giving it a classy appearance.

When it comes to deciding on a rug colour, follow the fundamentals

When choosing a rug, it’s generally a good idea to have a colour scheme in mind. Choosing muted tones for a bright colour scheme and a bright hue for a muted scheme can encourage the decor to blend along. For vividly coloured walls, choose tones of grey and light tans. Warm yellow or orange walls are also options for light or subdued walls. The colour of your rug will assist you in drawing the visitor’s attention to the appropriate area. If you’ve already decorated the space, make sure your rug coordinates with the blankets, cushions, and wall art to create a cohesive appearance. The idea is to choose a hue that accentuates the current decor.

For decisively furnished spaces

If your rooms are monochromatic, you can experiment with patterned carpets. A patterned rug may bring your home to life if you’re comfortable mixing and matching patterns. Your furniture can serve as a starting point for this; match the tones of your furniture to the carpeting.

Effective methods for deciding on a rug colour

The house’s flooring is an important consideration when selecting a rug for your room. If your home’s floor is dark, you should choose a dark rug to match it.

Bright and pastel colours work as well on light-coloured flooring. If you want your rug to be the focal point of your room, use muted walls and flooring and an exotic coloured rug. Bright reds, oranges, and blues — in fact, any colour combination that sticks out — will work well together. As a result, the rug will become an immediate discussion starter and offer your space a distinct personality.

Teas to help with menstrual cramps

Allow a teaspoon of green tea to steep in boiling water for 5 to 10 minutes. if it’s too bitter, add some lemon and honey to sweeten it up…writes N. Lothungbeni Humtsoe

If you are on your period, you will experience moderate cramping. These cramps are excruciatingly unpleasant, and you must make adjustments to your normal routine. To get rid of it, most women use medication. But a cup of tea can also help to relieve pain, relax your abdominal muscles, and help you get through your period. A cup of tea can also help relieve other symptoms such as nausea, headaches, and diarrhoea that are common during menstruation.

Harshada Bansal, Founder of The Tea Heaven shares teas to Help with Menstrual Cramps:

Peppermint Tea

Peppermint tea, which is pale and refreshing, is an excellent pick-me-up for individuals suffering from unpleasant cramps and stomach problems as a result of inconvenient periods. Because peppermint tea is a muscle relaxant, it can help your body release tension and relieve the pain caused by contractions almost immediately. Peppermint tea can also assist with bloating, diarrhoea, and headaches, which are all common side effects of menstrual cramps.

In a teapot, combine 1 bunch of fresh or 1 teaspoon of dried peppermint leaves. Allow it to steep for 5 minutes in boiling water.

Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea can help with menstrual pain relief, sleep improvement, and fatigue reduction. Add dried chamomile flowers to a kettle to prepare chamomile tea. Pour boiling water over the tea and steep for 5-6 minutes. Pour into teacups, top with raw honey, and enjoy a relaxing cup of chamomile tea.

Ginger Tea

Ginger has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and energy-boosting properties. Ginger tea can also be used to treat anxiety, headaches, and mood swings. Smart and sustainable options for green bathrooms

Good air quality is an indispensable component of a well-designed, sustainable bathroom. The bathroom is usually the most humid space in the house and requires suitable ventilation to keep the air renewed, clean, and free from any infections…reports Asian Lite News

This is a well-known fact that our planet has reached a tipping point and it is an urgent need of the hour to re-evaluate our lifestyle choices so that they have a lesser impact on the environment. This, of course, requires large scale change, but if we all do our bit then progress can be made in the right direction.

In the current scenario, sustainability drivers when renovating bathrooms have become critical given the context of global warming and the extinction of natural resources. This has led to a shift in design curation and makeovers of bathrooms. Going green doesn’t mean you have to compromise on wellness, comfort, or luxury. In fact, the opposite is simply closer to the truth. A greener, more eco-conscious space exudes comfort, calm and simplistic luxury. Changing up your habits and greening your bathroom will help make the planet greener, your home healthier, and your personal health more robust.

The green bathroom of today focuses on the economical use of precious resources and the well-being of people. Finding an environmentally-friendly (or friendlier) option for almost every equipment element and building material is no longer troublesome. From choices of flooring and fixtures to designing with a recyclable and reusable mindset, one can easily help reduce pollution and save water and energy with just a few changes.

With this year’s theme as ‘Only one earth’, mark the day with a pledge that you will do your bit towards the planet. Gaurav Malhotra, Managing Director, Hansgrohe India shares some tips to help you build and style more green bathrooms, and choose elements that are aesthetic while providing you with a lot of smart yet sustainable options.

Use natural materials for your fixtures

When you’re considering renovating your bathroom, look around for cabinets made from environmentally friendly, organic materials. Natural materials are free from harmful, pollution-causing compounds and can be easily recycled later down the line. Countertops made from glass, wood, or stone give a prestigious, well-crafted look and are better for the environment than acrylic, MDF or similar materials.

Ventilation

Good air quality is an indispensable component of a well-designed, sustainable bathroom. The bathroom is usually the most humid space in the house and requires suitable ventilation to keep the air renewed, clean, and free from any infections.

Too much humidity in a concentrated space permits mould and mildew to grow, which can damage building materials and lead to various health issues. To keep the surplus dampness in your bathroom under control, install an energy-efficient ventilation fan. Bathroom ventilation fans have benefited from new machinery that make them more efficient than ever.

Air Purifying Plants

The addition of air-purifying plants can also help to improve the air quality in your bathroom, especially in the context of the pollution-ridden world we live in. Lush greenery will not only keep the air clean but will also add an additional element of beauty and gorgeousness to the space while keeping it minimal.

Switch your shower/ faucet fixtures

Swapping your water guzzler for resource-saving products saves water and lets you enjoy carefree moments of wellbeing. AXOR One is powered by advanced Select technology thereby, allowing end-users to establish a new mode of interaction such as pressing down on its all-in-one controller to start or stop the water flow; turn clockwise to increase the temperature. The technology ensures volume of water is not wasted and is released in a controlled manner

Fill your cupboard with recyclables

Organic and paraben-free bathroom products, such as moisturisers, face wipes, fibre towels, toilet rolls, and shampoos all do their part to help the eco-system recover. Using eco-friendly ingredients and recyclable bottles is ideal for creating a greener more sustainable bathroom. Natural products are healthy for your skin and body, while also good for our world and future generations that will call it home.

Having said so, the thumb rule for eco-friendly bathrooms that the fewer pollutants and mould, the better the indoor air quality. It is only fair, that we make some small yet meaningful changes to re-purpose these spaces which have less impact on the environment and at the same time are stylish and sustainable.
