Musk’s SpaceX to launch its LEO satellites

Terms of the agreement with SpaceX founded by Elon Musk are confidential…reports Asian Lite News

OneWeb, an Indo-UK joint venture satellite communications company, said on Monday that it has entered into an agreement with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to launch its low earth orbit (LEO) satellites.

OneWeb is a joint venture between India Bharti Global and the UK government.

According to OneWeb, it would resume satellite launches through SpaceX rockets.

“The first launch with SpaceX is anticipated in 2022 and will add to OneWeb’s total in-orbit constellation that currently stands at 428 satellites, or 66 per cent of the fleet. OneWeb’s network will deliver high-speed, low-latency global connectivity.

“We thank SpaceX for its support, which reflects our shared vision for the boundless potential of space. With these launch plans in place, we’re on track to finish building out our full fleet of satellites and deliver robust, fast, secure connectivity around the globe,” OneWeb CEO Neil Masterson said.

Terms of the agreement with SpaceX founded by Elon Musk are confidential.

Earlier in the month, the board of OneWeb had voted to suspend satellite launches from Baikonur rocket port in Russia.

The suspension of launches is one of the after effects of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine.

Headquartered in London, OneWeb plans to have a constellation of 650 satellites in low earth orbit to offer communication services.

Till date, the company has launched 428 satellites. The last bunch, 34 satellites, was launched in February 2022 by Arianespace from the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana.

The next lot of 36 satellites is to be launched from Baikonur using Russia’s Soyuz rocket.

The Russian Space Agency had also demanded a guarantee from OneWeb that the satellites will not be used for military purposes and also that the UK government divest its holding in the company.

Khamenei urges for developing renewables, nuclear energy

Iran’s supreme leader on Sunday called for the development of renewable and clean energy resources, such as civilian nuclear energy, in the country to substitute fossil fuels…reports Asian Lite News

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei made the remarks after he planted saplings to mark Iran’s National Arbor Day and Natural Resources Week, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the leader’s official website.

The leader described the development of non-fossil fuels, such as nuclear energy, as a growing trend around the globe, saying regional countries are also working toward the goal.

He urged for paying serious attention to the development of renewable energy resources such as solar and wind power, which are more environmentally friendly, calling on the Energy Ministry and other related organisations to play their roles in this regard.

On Arbor Day, which fell on March 6 this year, Iranian officials, individuals, groups and environmental activists plant trees and encourage others to do so.

Iran claims it has been working on a peaceful nuclear program over the past years, with a focus on electricity generation and medicinal applications. The United States and some countries have blocked Iran’s efforts by imposing sanctions and accusing Tehran of seeking nuclear weapons.

Iran has repeatedly denied these accusations, claiming that it has no intention of exploiting nuclear power for military purposes.

AYYA T1: Russian’s alternative to iPhone

The main feature of the mobile phone is a separate hardware button to turn off the cameras and microphone to avoid surveillance…reports Asian Lite News

Russia is urging its citizens to switch to domestic smartphone AYYA T1 after American multinational technology giant Apple Inc announced earlier this week its decision of pausing all product sales in the country in response to Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine.

Refusing to use the iPhone, Russian State Duma deputies Maria Butina and Denis Maidanov are now urging their fellow parliamentarians to use AYYA T1 smartphones developed by local company Smartecosystem, a subsidiary of the Scale Research Institute, part of the Rostec state corporation.

In a video which has now gone viral on Russian social media, Butina who was jailed in the United States in 2018 and labelled as a foreign agent before being deported to Moscow, called on her fellow parliamentarians to abandon the iPhone and switch to AYYA T1.

“You know what, good gentlemen from Apple, but go through the woods! And you, my dears, become an eyewitness of the first contact of the deputy with the domestic smartphone AYYA T1,” Butina said in an Instagram post.

The main feature of the mobile phone, reported CNews – one of the largest high-tech publication in Russia and the CIS countries – last year, is a separate hardware button to turn off the cameras and microphone to avoid surveillance.

“So, baby Aya [AYYA] is the most reliable phone from prying eyes and ears! Let’s break through, comrades. Don’t even worry. And it wasn’t like that,” Butina wrote.

Butina added that the phone, which costs between 15 to 19 thousand rubles, will soon switch to the Russian-made Aurora from the mobile Android OS.

Established in 2007 by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Rostec developed innovative products, including military technologies, to become one of Russia’s most affluent brands over the course of next 10 years.

In 2019, as part of its military and technical cooperation, Rostec premiered on the world scene its state-of-the-art Tornado-S Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS), Pantsir-ME anti-aircraft missile and artillery system, and the new AK-12 assault rifle. Its aviation products include Irkut MC-21 airliner, jet fighter Sukhoi Su-57 and transport helicopter Mil Mi-38.

Maruti Suzuki reports marginal increase in production

“The shortage of electronic components had a minor impact on the production of vehicles during the month,” the company said in a statement…reports Asian Lite News

Automobile giant Maruti Suzuki India reported a rise in production during last month on a year-on-year basis.

The rise comes despite a major microchip shortage that has hindered production all throughout last year.

In January 2022, the company’s total production of passenger, as well as commercial vehicles, rose to 161,383 units from 160,975 units manufactured during the corresponding month of last year.

Segment-wise, the company produced 157,668 units of passenger vehicles during the month under review, up from 156,439 units manufactured in January 2021.

“The shortage of electronic components had a minor impact on the production of vehicles during the month,” the company said in a statement.

The global phenomenon of semiconductor shortages has been blamed on the exponential rise in demand for personal electronics such as cellphones and laptops during the ongoing pandemic. Semiconductors play a critical part in the production of internal combustion engines and are an integral part of all kinds of sensors and controls in any vehicle.

GoPro plans to expand camera lineup

According to Woodman, GoPro wants to offer more specialised cameras, while still using a lot of the same tech…reports Asian Lite News

GoPro is aiming to expand its camera line up in the next year, adding two more models alongside its current Hero and Max cameras.

The information regarding the expansion came from Nick Woodman, the company’s founder and CEO. Woodman spoke about it during the company’s earnings presentation on Thursday, reported The Verge.

According to Woodman, GoPro wants to offer more specialised cameras, while still using a lot of the same tech.

GoPro used to have several models in its Hero lineup, from the White, Silver, and Black models of cameras like the Hero 3 and 7, to the rear screen-less Session cameras.

Since the Hero 8’s release, though, it’s only released flagship models, opting to sell older flagships in lieu of introducing lower-spec but still current-gen cameras. More models don’t necessarily mean a return to the — as the company describes it — “good / better / best” business model. Woodman said that the company’s previous model involved making several models of cameras that all appealed to the same types of buyers.

Its new plan is to work on specialised cameras that would “appeal to entirely different groups of users” than the Hero and Max, he said.

Woodman also talked about going after the professional market more and said that GoPro didn’t just want to make a “Swiss Army knife” that’s okay for everyone. It also wants to make “premium solutions” (or really good knives) that would fit specific use-cases, focusing on people who might need more than what GoPro’s Hero and 360 cameras can currently provide.

Woodman was clear that the new additions to the line-up will still be based on the tech GoPro’s currently using, even if they’re built for different purposes (the cameras were referred to as “derivatives”).

GoPro also said that its roadmap includes “new cloud capabilities and an all-new subscription-based desktop application.” (ANI)
