Republicans maintain grip on Senate majority

The Democrats were hoping to gain control of the Senate by wresting at least four seats from the Republicans. But it appears they have only managed a net gain of one…BBC reports

The presidency is still a toss-up, but most House and Senate races are settled – leaving much unchanged. Whichever candidate wins, it looks as though he will preside over a divided Congress.BBC reports

The Democrats were hoping to gain control of the Senate by wresting at least four seats from the Republicans. But it appears they have only managed a net gain of one.

Among the disappointments for the Democrats was the fight for a seat in Maine, where Republican incumbent Susan Collins staved off a challenge from Democrat Sara Gideon. Collins, a moderate, had appeared under threat because Donald Trump is deeply unpopular in the state.

And the House of Representatives, too, seems mostly unchanged. Democrats are poised to keep their majority here, though at least six incumbents have lost their seats, without any new Republican seats.

US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has won his seventh term as the senior Senator from Kentucky, defeating Democratic nominee Amy McGrath.

With 79 per cent of the votes counted on Tuesday night, McConnell led McGrath, one of his toughest challengers since he was elected to the Senate in 1984, 57.9 per cent to 38.3 per cent, NBC News reported.

In his victory speech, McConnell said: “I’m the only one of the four Congressional leaders not from New York or California.

“I never imagined Kentuckians would make me the longest-serving senator in our state’s history or that my fellow Senate Republicans would make me the longest-serving Republican leader in US Senate history.

“Together, we’ve used Kentucky’s front-row seat for the good of our state and of our nation.

“Tonight, Kentuckians said, ‘We’re not finished yet’. Kentucky wants more of the policies that built the best economy in modern history, not socialism that would stifle prosperity and hurt workers.”

McGrath has not commented on the development yet.

The 78-year-old McConnell is also expected to seek re-election to his post as Senate Majority Leader.

Protesters gather in cities as count goes on

In Portland, Oregon, the national guard were activated after an anti-Trump protest calling for every vote to be counted turned violent…reports Asian Lite News

Protests have sprung up in some cities amid rising tensions over the knife-edge counts in battleground states.BBC reports

In Portland, Oregon, the national guard were activated after an anti-Trump protest calling for every vote to be counted turned violent. Witnesses said some people broke away from the main group and broke shop windows in the city centre. Police called the incidents a riot.

Meanwhile in Minneapolis, police made arrests after about 200 demonstrators blocked a main road. US media said the group had been protesting against Donald Trump and his call to stop the counting of votes.

Similar protests were also reported in New York, Philadelphia and Chicago.

In Detroit, pro-Trump supporters gathered outside a vote-counting centre, banging on windows and shouting: “Stop the count.” A small anti-count protest was also reported in Phoenix, Arizona.

In Washington, D.C., shopfronts are boarding up their windows with plywood or putting up other makeshift barriers, some of them stretching nearly entire blocks, reports Xinhua news agency.

“We do not have any intelligence on planned activity to suggest the need to board up; however, we remain vigilant,” John Falcicchio, Deputy Mayor of Washington, D.C. for Planning and Economic Development, said in a statement on Sunday.

“We understand the difficult position building owners and operating businesses are in, and we call upon all who participate in First Amendment activities to denounce violence and report it immediately should it occur,” he said.

Fences have been erected around the White House, where demonstrators gathered on Saturday night to protest against President Donald Trump.

Biden bags battleground Michigan

In the 2016 presidential election, then Republican candidate Donald Trump bagged Michigan with 47.50 per cent of the vote, while his challenger Hillary Clinton trailed very close at 47.27 per cent…reports Asian Lite News

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has won Michigan with 16 of the battleground state’s electoral votes, according to media reports.

Both CNN and NBC News called the race for Biden on Wednesday evening, even as other key states such Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Nevada were yet to declare a winner, The Hill news website reported.

In the 2016 presidential election, then Republican candidate Donald Trump bagged Michigan with 47.50 per cent of the vote, while his challenger Hillary Clinton trailed very close at 47.27 per cent.

Trump and Biden campaigned in Michigan ahead of Election Day.

While the President attended a rally on Monday, Biden made a joint appearance with former President Barack Obama on October 31.

Michigan is the second of three Rust Belt “blue wall” states that Biden has won after Trump had flipped them four years ago.

The other two are Pennsylvania, where counting was still underway of outstanding ballots, and Michigan.

As of Wednesday night, Biden had 264 electoral college votes, six short of the 270 needed to become President, and Trump had only 214, according to media tally.

The only way Trump can get re-elected is by capturing 54 of the remaining 60 votes.

Biden also created a record for the highest number of popular votes polled by a presidential candidate with 70.3 million ballots as of Wednesday afternoon, and still counting.

Trump had polled 67.5 million votes.

Due to the incomplete results, there was a tie in the party standings in the Senate, with each side having 48 seats.

In the House of Representatives, Democrats had 205 seats to Republicans’ 190.

Trump gears up for legal battle as counting in progress

In Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Nevada, Trump team lawyers are storming right in….reports Asian Lite News

Facing projected losses in do or die battlegrounds, the Donald Trump campaign is going 360 degree legal.

Bring it on is the Biden camp mood. “We feel good about where we are,” Biden said, reflecting the upbeat spirit after the long, wild slog of election night.

In Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Nevada, Trump team lawyers are storming right in.

The math is down to the wire now — Biden 248, Trump 214 at 4 p.m. EST (2:30 a.m. IST).

By late afternoon Wednesday, Wisconsin and Maine were called for Biden, taking his tally to 248 in the slow march towards 270 electoral votes.

By that time, Biden had pulled ahead in Michigan too.

The Trump campaign lost no time in filing a lawsuit on Wednesday in a Michigan state court demanding access to locations where ballots are being counted in one of the still undecided states that could become pivotal in deciding the US election winner.

Trump has asked for a temporary halt to counting until it gets “meaningful access” to review ballots which have been processed.

The Trump camp said it is suing to stop the Pennsylvania vote count over “lack of transparency”.

Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien said lawyers would “immediately” ask for a Wisconsin recount.

There is also a pending Republican appeal at the Supreme Court over whether Pennsylvania can count mail-in ballots that arrive between Wednesday and Friday.

All of this is happening as multiple states which will be decisive in the final count are working to finish counting a record number of votes which came in the mail this year.

Biden stakes claim to White House

At last count, Biden is at 253 and Trump at 214…reports Asian Lite News

Democratic Party candidate Joe Biden has staked his claim to the US presidency claiming that he has the electoral college votes for a victory, declaring, “We the people will not surrender.”

At last count, Biden is at 253 and Trump at 214.

“I’m not here to declare that we’ve won, but I am here to report that when the count is finished, we believe we will be the winners,” he said on Wednesday in Delaware.

Biden’s speech took on a certain decisiveness in tone as confidence grew with the Democratic party, with back to back wins in Wisconsin and Michigan. These wins are part of the Democratic effort to reclaim a key part of the “blue wall” that slipped away four years ago. It also narrows Donald Trump’s path to reelection.

Biden’s paths to the White House are expanding. Combining the latest wins with Nevada and Georgia would take him past the tape.

“I will govern as an American president,” Biden said. “There will be no red states and blue states when we win. Just the United States of America.”

Trump tweeted, “They are finding Biden votes all over the place — in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. So bad for our Country!”

US formally comes out of the Paris Agreement

The US has formally left the Paris Agreement, marking the only nation among nearly 200 signatories that abandoned this global agenda on combating climate change.

US President Donald Trump announced in June 2017 that his country would leave the Paris Agreement.

According to the agreement, its signatories can only formally request to quit the pact three years after it takes force, which falls upon November 4, 2019, and the withdrawal will take effect one year from delivery of the notification, meaning that the US will formally pull out of the pact on November 4 this year, Xinhua reported.

Trump announced the withdrawal soon after he took office, citing concerns about the pact’s threat to the US economy.

The Trump administration also rolled back environmental rules made in the Obama era to prop up the coal industry by allowing it to emit more greenhouse gases into the air.

Trump keeps declaring premature victories

Twitter started applying labels to the offending tweets shortly after they were posted on Wednesday…reports Asian lite News

Twitter was having a field day in flagging tweets by US President Donald Trump as he prematurely declared victory in battleground states, challenging the platform policies.

Twitter started applying labels to the offending tweets shortly after they were posted on Wednesday.

“We have claimed, for Electoral Vote purposes, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (which won’t allow legal observers) the State of Georgia, and the State of North Carolina, each one of which has a Big Trump lead,” Trump tweeted on Wednesday.

Trump’s premature announcement followed a flood of tweets from his inner circle declaring a false victory in Pennsylvania, reports The Verge.

Trump’s son, Eric Trump, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, and the Trump reelection campaign’s Twitter account, @TeamTrump, all tweeted out messages prematurely declaring a Trump victory in Pennsylvania “within 10 minutes of each other”.

Trump campaign director Bill Stepien also told reporters that they had won Pennsylvania.

The tensions between US President Donald Trump and social media platforms continued to simmer as Twitter earlier mounted restrictions on one of his controversial tweets while Facebook put labels to the president’s posts that alleged election theft, while the vote counting was underway.

According to a CNN report on Thursday, former Vice President Joe Biden moved to within 17 electoral votes of claiming the presidency by winning the state of Michigan, in the latest twist of a dramatic election clash.

The election remained in suspense as the race tightened dramatically in Georgia and Pennsylvania.

SPECIAL: Medical Tourism in Turkey

During Hestourex, I met Dr. Sevil Kaderli, the founder of Atalya Dental clinic in Antalya. We talked about the practice and the type of services that she offers to the customers. I was invited to visit the Atalya clinic in Antalya’s Kepez district. It was a seven-story building consisting of 17 clinics equipped with all the latest dental technology. One room was designed and decorated specifically for children. One floor was dedicated to a large laboratory for making teeth, dentures, crowns, and implants. There was also a floor with several apartments dedicated to accommodate foreign guests. Dr. Kaderli also owns and manages another branch in Dokuma district in the city of Antalya …. Writes Mohammed Reza Amirinia

Medical health tourism is a growing global trend. Many clinics, hospitals, and agencies advertise their services to attract tourists interested in various types of medical and cosmetic treatments. Spa treatments, thermal tubs, mud baths, traditional healing, and homeopathy are just some of the areas covered by in the world of wellness. Medical surgery covers anything from personal injuries and complicated disorders to cosmetic surgery for personal beautification.

The term “Medical Tourism” arose as many people began to travel from their own countries to other countries for the medical treatments for a variety of reasons, primarily economic but also recreational, whereby one has the desire to combine their healthcare with sightseeing and exploration.

An emerging trend involves the industry shifting from Europe to third world countries and developing such as Cuba and Costa Rica in the west or Turkey and Morocco in the East. Cost and quality are a key driver as to why westerners would, with advanced healthcare systems in their own countries, flock to less developed nations for health and wellbeing services.

The world of hospitality has combined with wellbeing to provide services and facilities beyond traditional hospitals and clinics. Customer care, transfer, spa treatments and other services are more similar to a luxury hotel, encouraging foreign customers to choose these new international tourist clinics.

In the UK, limitations in NHS healthcare and very expensive private treatments have encouraged British citizens to look for alternative plans overseas. UK hospitals have the best surgeons in the world and have historically been considered a mecca for foreign patients. They still attract many medical tourists who can afford the costs in very specialized fields in the UK. However, there is a void in the national healthcare system that encourages UK and European citizens to look for new avenues in healthcare in other countries, normally less developed countries.

I was in Antalya to attend Hestourex, the World Health, Sport and Alternative Tourism Congress and Exhibition. It was a great opportunity for B2B meetings for visitors from all over the world to engage with local Turkish businesses and other international guests working in healthcare. I visited many stands exhibited by Turkish hospitals and clinics from Antalya, Mulga and other Turkish cities and regions. There were also many hotels, resorts and sports institutions as the show was dedicated to the Sport.

Dr. Kaderli also owns and manages another branch in Dokuma district in the city of Antalya.

Mr. Gokhan, the manager of Atalya Dental clinic explained the ambitious ideas of Dr. Kaderli and her team to provide a personal service to patients from initial consultation and caring therapy procedures to the final post-therapy advice to maintain cleanliness and hygiene.

I was there in Antalya for business meetings – I never thought that I would go for a dental treatment. I didn’t have any emergency issues with my teeth, however, due to historic tooth decay, I was previously advised to have dental bridges or implants done. Mr. Gokhan suggested having implants placed instead of bridges.

Dr Kedrli examined me carefully and recommended placing 6 dental implant posts. My flight was the next day, but Sevil assured me that she could do the job in the morning before my flight. It was a hard decision to go through such an intense procedure in half a day. However, I didn’t hesitate to accept going through the treatment. The nurse took a panoramic x-ray, monitoring the state of my tooth, before the surgical operation. The x-ray machine was a state of the art machine connected to a computer.

The surgeon began the operation after evaluating my x-ray and deciding the places of the implants. Dr Kedrli cut the gum to drill holes into my jawbone for insertion of implant. The deeply implanted fixtures act as new tooth roots. The implants are made of titanium, because it contains alloys that the human body can tolerate more easily and won’t cause any allergy or contamination in the body. The quality of my bone was low in one section around my tooth. Therefore, the surgeon had to use the bone graft to do bone rehabilitation and restore the bone structure to strengthen it to hold the implants. The bone grafting is a costly essential requirement, if the bone is not good enough to cover the implant.

My doctor also had to extract two teeth. It was a very cumbersome procedure with a delicate surgical operation, but it was all done diligently. I have always resented tooth extraction and root canal treatment. The local anaesthesia was required to relieve the pain. However, this implant placement caused just minor discomfort, despite intense treatment. The doctors and nurses were very supportive during the treatment and the whole procedure was done in a few hours. I was ready to fly back to London in the afternoon.

I had to use ice bags on my face to stop minor bleeding following the operation and during my flight. The implant wounds started to heal in a week and stitches were dissolved slowly. I didn’t have any inflammation, but I had a slight discomfort around implant posts after a few weeks following the procedure. I visited a local doctor to have an examination. He found an undissolved stich on my gum. He easily removed it and that relived my discomfort. It is always advisable not to panic with little pain. It is a good idea to have a regular check-up, in case of any complications. There are always risks of infection, bleeding or delays in bone healing. But the majority of people don’t have any serious complications. The dental implants are an important decision to make for anyone. Despite the cost, it seems that the implant placements are the most reliable option in the long term.

The placement of implant fixtures is the first phase of the treatment. The healing of the bone and the gum around posts, similar to the growth of gum tissue around natural tooth may take 3 to 6 months. You should allow enough time so that the implants blend with the jawbone properly, before the new tooth can be placed over the posts. Actually, the longer it takes the better, because the implants sitting on your jawbone would need to become part of the anatomy of your body.

I was extremely busy during the year and did not get a chance to travel to Turkey. I returned to Antalya after a year during Hestourex 2019. It was a good opportunity again to combine my business meetings and sightseeing tours with completing the dental treatment. I was there for only for five days, but normally it is better to allow one to two weeks to complete the second stage of the treatment.

Dr. Sevil Kaderli worked very intensely on my teeth over three sessions. She was initially satisfied that the implant healing was good by taking an up to date x-ray. Then she began by cutting and preparing my existing tooth to adjust them in line with the new artificial tooth. Sevil created a model of my upper and lower tooth and sent it to the laboratory. She made a temporary removable denture for my upper tooth, before the final one was done. Sevil owns her own private laboratory on the 6th floor of her building. Therefore, it was convenient for me to go to the laboratory for handy slight adjustments.

The new crown tooth was made of zirconia ceramic with a natural colour to match my existing tooth. The Zirconia crown is made of zirconium dioxide, a very robust material, and much stronger than porcelain. The zirconia is a kind of ceramic with high transparency and durability features. It doesn’t contain the metal. The crown was fitted via abutments to screw the prosthesis over my implants.

Sevil did all my treatments as a priority with immediate attention, but very carefully to avoid any negligence. I was amazed of her dedication and caring attitude, giving me comfort during the procedure with her bright demeanour. If you are going to do this dental treatment, I suggest to allow more time in each stage to get it done with more relaxation and be less worried about the time.

I am very happy with my new teeth, which has positively changed my appearance. Dental marketers call it the “Hollywood Smile” to promote their work. I look younger and happier and most importantly, it helps with my food digestion.

Dr. Sevil Kaderli also operates another branch in Rixos Downtown Antalya. It is a luxury private setting for clients who are looking for more exclusive dental treatments. The clinic is called Medworld in a building adjoining the Rixos Hotel Spa centre for various types of physical treatment and rehabilitation.

The Atalya clinic in the city of Antalya is only an example of several dental clinics in Turkey. There are always risks in choosing a reliable and trustworthy clinic. The selection of the right dentist is not just about cost, worrying about guarantees, but also the trust, professionalism, expertise, quality and appropriate dental equipment in the clinic. It can be worrying to fly to a distant country, speaking a different language and then going under any treatments. However, word of mouth and researching reviews online are good ways to help make a decision.

Turkey like many other countries in the world has suffered because of the covid-19 pandemic and all required restrictions. Slowly the situation is changing and things are going back to normal with careful consideration of social distancing. The Atalya clinic in Antalya is open and business is as usual to welcome the guests for all their dental treatments observing of all medical precautions.

Democrats call Trump ‘dangerous and authoritarian’

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday claimed that he has already won the 2020 presidential election in an address to supporters and family at the White House…BBC reports

President Trump’s unfounded declaration that “frankly, we did win this election” has prompted a strong reaction from Democratic politicians.

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who is projected to win re-election in New York, condemned Trump’s claim as “illegitimate, dangerous, and authoritarian”.

“Count the votes. Respect the results,” she tweeted.

House Representative for Minnesota Ilhan Omar called Trump a “dangerous man”

, tweeting “you can’t stop ballots from being counted”.

“This isn’t a dictatorship,” she added.

Amy Klobuchar, the senator for Minnesota, struck a more measured tone.

“All votes must be counted. We live in a democracy,” she wrote minutes after Trump’s statement.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday claimed that he has already won the 2020 presidential election in an address to supporters and family at the White House.

As polls were closing across the country after voting ended for one of the most-anticipated presidential elections, Trump thanked his family and all those who voted for his re-election in his opening remarks, the BBC reported.

“We were getting ready for a big celebration. We were winning everything.”

Trump also celebrated his big win in Florida, considered a make or break state to determine the outcome of the election.

“We didn’t win it, we won it by a lot,” he sid.

He also claimed a lead in Pennsylvania, similarly like his Democratic rival Joe Biden did earlier on election night.

But it was still too early to determine a winner in the state.
