Lord Ahmed Quits Before Expulsion Over Sexual Misconduct

The House of Lords Conduct Committee submitted the report on Monday recommending the Lord to be expelled from the House with immediate effect …. Reports Kaliph Anaz

Lord Nazir Ahmed lost his seat at Britain’s House of Lords after a panel recommended for his expulsion over sexual misconduct with a vulnerable Kashmiri woman.

Tahira Zaman, a single mother of two, filed a complaint against the Lord with Lucy Scott-Moncrieff, Commissioner for Standards. BBC’s Newsnight team aired an investigative documentary on the controversial lord after several women complaint against him of sexual exploitation.

Lord Nazir made history when he became the first Muslim, Kashmiri, and Pakistani to enter the House of Lords as a Labour peer in 1998. Prior to that he was a councillor at Rotherham. He was a confidante of then prime minister Tony Blair. He later turned against him over Iraq War.

According to Ms Zaman, there are at least five other women want to take action against the Lord but are afraid of doing so because of community wrath and family honour.

Ms Zaman alleged that the Lord sexually exploited her on various occasions at his second home in London. Another victim accused the Lord of asking her to spend a night with him in London in return of helping her husband in a business tussle.

The House of Lords Conduct Committee submitted the report on Monday recommending the Lord to be expelled from the House with immediate effect. Lord Nazir Ahmed on a damage control mission later contacted a Pakistani TV station to announce his “Retirement.”

The Committee accused the Pakistani-origin Lord of bringing shame to the august House.

“His use of his parliamentary status to offer illusory help to a vulnerable Ms Zaman undermines the reputation of the House of Lords as a whole, as it undermines trust in the honesty and trustworthiness of its members,” the Committee said in the report.

The Conduct Committee, which is Chaired by Lord Mance and includes four external members, dismissed Lord Ahmed’s appeal against both the finding of breaches of the Code of Conduct and the recommend sanction of expulsion from the House.

The report will now have to be put to the House for approval by the House on 19 November. In line with new Standing Orders for reports of this nature the report will  not be debated.

The Conduct Committee findings were explosive and undermines the credibility of the most vocal critic of India in Europe. Lord Nazir Ahmed become the third member of Britain’s Upper House to quit before expulsion in the recent history. Lord Andrew Stone, former chief of Marks & Spencer, Lord Anthony Lester, were forced to resign after sexual allegations against them.

The investigation led by the Commissioner of Standards reveals that the Lord broke the Code of Conduct of House of Lords.

“I find that by sexually assaulting Ms Zaman on 2 March 2017, Lord Ahmed was therefore in breach of the Code by failing to act on his personal honour,” the Commissioner said in the report. “I find that by failing to progress Ms Zaman’s case and lying about his intentions Lord Ahmed was acting without honesty or integrity. As such he was therefore failing to act on his personal honour and was in breach of the Code.”

“I find that Lord Ahmed exploited Ms Zaman emotionally and sexually even though he knew she was receiving treatment for anxiety and depression,” the Commissioner added.

“This, the Commissioner found, “exacerbates the seriousness of his breaches of the Code”.

“[On] important issues Lord Ahmed persistently gave deliberately inaccurate and misleading accounts to conceal his behaviour towards Ms Zaman … I consider that in conducting himself in this manner he has failed genuinely to co-operate with my investigation. He has failed to act on his personal honour, as evidenced by his dishonesty and lack of integrity.”

Lord Nazir tried to use Racist and India cards to deflect the allegations against him. But the Committee rejected all the claims and recommends for his suspension. Prominent journalists from the British media, representing BBC, Sunday Times, The Times and Asian Lite deposed in front of the Committee.

“The Conduct Committee accordingly dismisses the appeal of Lord Ahmed against the Commissioner’s findings that he breached the Code of Conduct by failing to act on his personal honour in the course of his parliamentary activities,” the panel said. “We now turn to Lord Ahmed’s appeal against the Commissioner’s recommended sanction of expulsion from the House. This is based on her findings of breach and the aggravating circumstances she identifies including that Lord Ahmed knew that Ms Zaman was vulnerable, that he did not cooperate with the investigation, and that he has shown no remorse.”

The Commissioner concludes that “His use of his parliamentary status to offer illusory help to a vulnerable Ms Zaman undermines the reputation of the House of Lords as a whole, as it undermines trust in the honesty and trustworthiness of its members.”

The Committee is firm on its decision to expel the Lord.

“We have nevertheless come ultimately to the conclusion that it would not be appropriate for this case to lead simply to a period of lengthy suspension followed by re-admission to the role, responsibilities and privileges of membership of the House,” the panel said. “The abuse of the privileged position of membership for a member’s own gain or gratification, at the expense of the vulnerable or less privileged, involves a fundamental breach of trust and merits the gravest sanction. Even though it is possible to think of even more serious breaches, the case in all its circumstances which we have set out crosses the threshold calling for immediate and definitive expulsion.”

Before the House of Lords Conduct Committee report, the Lord launched a damage control mission. He announced his retirement without any specific reasons.

He told Geo News that he has decided to retire from the House of Lords after 23 years of service. The Pakistani news channel said that Lord Nazir wrote to the clerk of the House of Lords a month ago, expressing his wish to retire.

It also reported that Parliament confirmed to Lord Nazir that his retirement allocation had been approved under the House of Lords Reform Act 2014 “as of 14 November 2020”.

The Lord Speaker on Monday announced in the UK Parliament that Lord Nazir has retired at the start of business on November 16, 2020.

The Lord was involved in many other controversies too. He was convicted and jailed in 2009 for a reckless driving accident. He had sent text messages while driving, which hit a driver of a stationary car stranded on the M1 highway.

In 2013, Lord Nazir Ahmed blamed his conviction in the driving accident on a “Jewish conspiracy”. The comment led to the Labour Party suspending him; he resigned from the party later that year.

EU determined to reach deal with UK: Spokesperson

The UK is supposed to formally leave the bloc by December 31, 2020, and the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier has said an agreement needs to be reached by mid-November as it takes weeks to finalize the paperwork….reports Asian Lite News

The European Union (EU) is “100 per cent determined to reach an agreement” with the UK on their future relations, despite a presumed deadline drawing closer, a spokesperson for the bloc said.

On Monday, Daniel Ferrie told a European Commission briefing that the negotiations will continue in Brussels on all subjects, reports Xinhua news agency.

Among the topics that remained open were fisheries, on which “there is still a great deal of divergences”.

The UK is supposed to formally leave the bloc by December 31, 2020, and the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier has said an agreement needs to be reached by mid-November as it takes weeks to finalize the paperwork.

However, Barnier remains confident that the task could be fulfilled.

“With the European Parliament and all the Member States, we remain determined, patient, respectful. We want our future cooperation to be open but fair in all areas,” he tweeted on Monday.

The European Commission chief spokesperson Eric Mamer reiterated that the “quality” of the agreement is prioritized over “any kind of timing or deadline”.

A video summit of EU leaders, slated for November 19 to discuss the latest developments in the coronavirus pandemic, is being viewed in Brussels as the final deadline for a draft Brexit deal, according to The Guardian newspaper.

The UK and the EU started their lengthy and bumpy post-Brexit talks in March after the country formally ended its membership with the bloc on January 31, trying to secure a future trade deal before the Brexit transition period expires on December 31.

Serious differences remain in level playing field, governance and fisheries, among others, after rounds of talks.

Prime Minister Johnson and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, said earlier this month that the two sides would “redouble” their efforts to find a solution.

Controversial British Lord Nazir Ahmed of Rotherham leaves his post from the Upper House of British Parliament after a string of controversies.

BBC aired an investigative story in 2019 on Lord Ahmed. In the programme, a Kashmiri woman accused the Lord of sexually exploiting her after promising to help her to retrieve money from a fake sheikh.

He is also facing a trial along with his two brothers at Sheffield Crown Court on January 25, 2022 for rape and indecent assault on a boy and girl.

The Rotherham-based controversial peer was charged with two counts of attempted rape of a girl under 16 and one count of indecent assault against a boy in the early 1970s. Lord Nazir’s elder brother Mohamed Farouq, 68, of Worrygoose Lane, Rotherham, is charged with four counts of indecent assault against a boy under 14. Another brother Mohammed Tariq, 63, of Gerard Road, Rotherham, is charged with two counts of indecent assault against a boy under 14.

The controversial lord told Geo News that he has decided to retire from the House of Lords after 23 years of service.

Brexit Talks at Stake as Boris Enters II Quarantine

Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who had tested positive for the novel coronavirus earlier this year, has announced that he was self-isolating after “being in contact with someone with Covid-19″…reports Asian Lite Newsdesk

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said that he is “confident [the UK] will prosper” outside the European Union if a post-Brexit trade deal is not agreed with the bloc, the media reported.

The negotiations began again in Brussels on Monday, with the UK’s chief negotiator saying there had been “progress in a positive direction” on a deal, the BBC reported.

But Lord David Frost said “significant elements” are yet to be agreed.

“But we may not succeed. Either way, as the Prime Minister @BorisJohnson made clear on 16 October, people and businesses must prepare for the change that is coming on 31 December, most of which happens whether there is a deal or not,” Mr Frost tweeted.

According to BBC report, the EU counterpart, Michel Barnier, said he wanted “future cooperation to be open but fair” with the UK. Tweeting as talks started, he added: “We remain determined, patient, respectful.”

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who had tested positive for the novel coronavirus earlier this year, has announced that he was self-isolating after “being in contact with someone with Covid-19”.

Taking to Twitter, the Prime Minister said: “I’ve been instructed by our NHS Test and Trace scheme to self-isolate for two weeks, after being in contact with someone with Covid-19.

“I’m in good health and have no symptoms, and will continue to lead on our response to the virus and our plans to #BuildBackBetter.”

In a video, also posted on the micro-blogging platform, Johnson said that he was “pinged” by the NHS Test and Trace on Sunday and was asked to self-isolate as a precautionary measure.

“We have got to interrupt the spread of the disease and one of the ways we could do that now is by self-isolating for 14 days when you get contacted by NHS Test and Trace,” Johnson said in the video.

“I am absolutely confident that together we can beat this disease. Don’t forget hands, face, space, get a test if you have symptoms,” he added.

According to a BBC report, the Prime Minister on November 12 spent about 35 minutes with Conservative MP Lee Anderson, who lost his sense of taste the next day.

On Sunday, Anderson announced that he was self-isolating with his wife after they both tested positive for the virus.

In April, Johnson spent three nights in intensive care after contracting the disease.

He later said it “could have gone either way” and thanked healthcare workers for saving his life.

Boris Johnson

The development comes as England is currently under a national lockdown, the second of its kind since the onset of the pandemic in the UK, aimed at curbing the resurgence of new Covid-19 cases.

As of Monday, the UK’s Covid-19 caseload and death toll stood at 1,372,884 and 52,026, respectively.

Coming back to Brexit, last week, the UK’s National Audit Office (NAO) warned of “significant disruption” when the Brexit transition period ends on December 31.

Regardless of the outcome of the post-Brexit negotiations for a free trade agreement between the UK and the EU, there will be a significant change at the border in 2021, it added.

The government spending watchdog said in its latest report that while the UK has now left the EU, preparations to manage the border at the end of the transition period remain very challenging.

The UK and the EU started their lengthy and bumpy post-Brexit talks in March after the country formally exited the bloc on January 31, trying to secure a future trade deal before the Brexit transition period expires.

Islamophobia Haunt Labour

An investigation carried out by Labour Muslim Network and reported by ITV News, revealed that more than a third of Muslims associated with the Labour Party have witnessed Islamophobia … A special report by HITESH TIKOO

British Muslim Labour Party members and supporters have witnessed Islamophobia within the the country’s biggest opposition party, a recent report has found.

An investigation carried out by Labour Muslim Network and reported by ITV News, revealed that more than a third of Muslims associated with the Labour Party have witnessed Islamophobia.

Forty-four per cent said they do not believe the party takes the issue of rising Islamophobia seriously, and 48 per cent said they have lost confidence in the party’s complaints structures.

Ali Reza Milani, who stood against Prime Minister Boris Johnson in Uxbridge and South Ruislip parliamentary constituency in the last year’s general election, claimed a fellow party member told him Muslims could not be in the parliament because of “their propensity to violence” and asked if he was a terrorist, ITV News reported.

Milani said: “It hurts to feel like I experienced that sort of abuse from a party member and it not only took a year for them to get back to me, but the complaint was lost. It’s just hurtful.”

Muslim MP from Manchester Gorton, Afzal Khan, who also heads the parliamentary chair of Labour Muslim Network, said Islamophobia within the party had gone “unnoticed” and “deserved immediate attention”.

“Whilst the Labour Party has enjoyed the overwhelming support of the Muslim community for decades, we cannot take their support for granted.

“The Labour Party must commit to a zero tolerance of Islamophobia and rebuild confidence with its Muslim members,” Khan said.

Labour MP Apsana Begum representing the Poplar and Limehouse constituency told ITV News: “It’s quite regular to be asked questions and to constantly be asked to reaffirm my commitment towards British society as if in some way my identity and politics are not compatible.”

The report also revealed that 59 per cent of Muslims surveyed said they did not feel well represented by the Labour Party.

Responding to the report, the Labour leader Keir Starmer, and deputy leader, Angela Rayner, said: “We thank Labour Muslim Network for this important report, as well as their work to ensure our Muslim members are represented, included and heard.

“Islamophobia has no place in our party or society and we are committed to rooting it out.

“We look forward to working with LMN to implement their recommendations and will be meeting with them to discuss the next steps in tackling the scourge of Islamophobia.”

Verstegen, Sri Sri Tattva join hands to offer sustainable agri solutions in Europe, UK

Netherlands  based Verstgen has tied up with the internationally reputed global brand Sri Sri Tattva headquartered in India to offer sustainable agricultural solutions reports Rahul Laud from Asian Lite International Newsdesk

The Rotterdam family business Verstegen Spices & Sauces has drawn up plans to offer sustainable solutions in Europe. Its  sustainability ambitions are being further developed in collaboration with Source Natural Foods & Herbal Supplements Limited, a listed company on the Bombay Stock Exchange, subsidiary of one of India’s leading multinational brand of Ayurveda & FMCG Sriveda Sattva Private Limited (Sri Sri Tattva). Together with Source Natural, Verstegen has signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will further expand the planting of sustainable food forests in India. Both Source Natural and Verstegen have the ambition to use this way of doing business to leave a better world for the next generation. This collaboration is therefore a huge step to achieve this goal.

The objective of the MOU is to set up a verified and safe food supply chain of regenerative spices (agroforestry and natural farming) and explore together new market opportunities. Both companies have agreed to start with a red chilli based agroforestry system in Andhra Pradesh, India and to promote it widely with other spices in the future.

The chillies, coming from a regenerative source, will be procured directly from the farmers and processed into the final product. Sustainability and traceability forms the foundation of this business relationship. Verstegen has been a leader in sustainable business and was elected as the most sustainable company in the Netherlands informed company sources.

Furthermore it is reported that Source Natural has collaborated with the Sri Sri Institute of Agricultural Sciences & Technology Trust and have done extensive work to train farmers in sustainable methods of farming such as natural and organic farming. Having a good connection with local farmers in the region, the company would be able to source high quality produce and ensure that the farmers earn a premium over the market rate for their high quality crop, a result of the  special methods of cultivation applied by them.

The collaboration will start with a pilot at the end of 2020 and will start growing chilies in combination with other crops in order to be able to comply with a sustainable agricultural system, also known as agroforestry.

Agroforestry is a sustainable agricultural system also known as ‘regenerative agroforestry’. With this system, different crops on the same piece of land absorb CO2 from the air. In addition to CO2 absorption, this agricultural method also provides more biodiversity, higher yields for farmers, healthier plants, better harvest quality and better soil conditions.

Verstegen started planting sustainable food forests in 2019. According to the company , this is the step towards the development and preservation of sustainable herb and spice chains. Source Natural Foods & Herbal Supplements Limited was  founded in 1995 with a holistic and Ayurvedic approach to health and wellbeing has been available in Europe and the UK.

Arvind Varchaswi Managing Director Sri Sri Tattva, said , “We see that consumers want to live healthier lives and look at foods that are good for their health. More and more food trends are rooted in the Ayurveda system of medicine from India. Since the beginning of this year, Sri Sri Tattva Europe B.V., with the Dutch CEO Anja Jessurun, has been distributing the wide product range in Europe, in categories such as: Ayurvedic food and supplements, health care, personal care, and online courses.”

Michel Chairman & Managing Director, Verstegen “With this program we will grow and market regenerative chillies in India. A profit for all parties involved, including the farming communities on which we depend ”.

Sri Sri Tatva has also drawn up ‘’ambitious’’ plans to offer its entire product range of various ayurveda and herbal products coupled with various wisdom and knowledge sessions related to wellness in Europe and UK. The company is also geared up to expand its distributor network in Europe and the  UK informed company sources.
