Abu Dhabi’s Non-Oil Economy Surges

Abu Dhabi’s non-oil economic activities have maintained remarkable growth in Q2 2023…reports Asian Lite News

The Statistics Centre – Abu Dhabi (SCAD) has announced the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) estimates for the second quarter of 2023, revealing a whopping 12.3% growth of the non-oil economy and a 3.5% increase in the total GDP compared to the same period in 2022, a testament to Abu Dhabi economy’s competitiveness and resilience, enabling it to navigate global economic headwinds.

Abu Dhabi’s non-oil economic activities have maintained remarkable growth in Q2 2023, leading the value of the emirate’s real non-oil GDP to AED154 billion, the highest since 2014 to break a record registered in the first quarter of the current year, where it surpassed AED146 billion.

According to preliminary estimates, the value of Abu Dhabi’s real GDP in the second quarter of 2023 reached its highest level at AED287 billion, driven by the growth of all non-oil activities, to continue the increase of its contribution to the GDP to 53.7%, which boosted the growth of the emirate’s non-oil GDP by 9.2% in the first half of 2023 compared to the same period last year.

Ahmed Jasim Al Zaabi, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED), said, “The continued strong performance of Abu Dhabi’s economy despite mounting challenges in the global economic landscape reaffirms success of the emirate’s diversification strategy and adaptability to markets’ shifts.

“Our comprehensive strategies, prudent policies, countercyclical measures, and business-friendly ecosystem further enhance Abu Dhabi’s position as a rising economic powerhouse and preferred destination for talents, businesses and investments. We remain committed to delivering our ‘Falcon Economy’ objectives to reach new heights of sustainable development.”

The remarkable growth of Abu Dhabi’s economy in the first six months of 2023 is attributed to the emirate’s successful economic strategies and policies designed to foster innovation and development, including the Abu Dhabi Industrial Strategy, which is accelerating the transformation of the emirate’s manufacturing sector and strengthening its position as the region’s most competitive industrial hub since its launch in June 2022.

Abdulla Gharib Alqemzi, Acting Director-General of SCAD, said, “The non-oil sectors continue to register outstanding growth rates, reaffirming the effectiveness of Abu Dhabi’s economic performance against global challenges.

The quarterly GDP estimates substantiate this progress and show that the emirate’s economy is a competitive advantage for investors thanks to the accumulated growth that led to the increase of the total value added of the emirate’s economy to its highest level in the second quarter of 2023 at AED287 billion with significant contribution of the manufacturing, construction, and financial activities.”

Statistical estimates published by SCAD indicate an exceptional growth in the construction economic activity’s value-added for Q2 2023. This growth rate reached 19.1% year-over-year, making the highest quarterly value-added since 2014, at AED25.3 billion thanks to its projects’ ability to achieve high completion rates. The construction activity’s contribution to Abu Dhabi’s GDP amounted to 8.8% during Q2 2023.

Similarly, the quarterly growth of the manufacturing activity continued to rise by 7% compared to the same period last year, with the sector also recording its highest quarterly value-added since 2014, achieving AED25 billion during the second quarter 2023.

The contribution of this activity to the total GDP reached 8.7% for the first time in a quarter, according to Q2 2023 estimates. The contribution of this activity to non-oil GDP reached 16.2% during the same period.

At the same time, the wholesale and retail trade activities reached their highest quarterly value since 2014 at AED16.7 billion, contributing 5.8% of the total GDP in Q2 2023. During this period, these activities grew at a rate of 13.4%, as per the statistical estimates.

Likewise, the value-added of both the information and communications activities and the public health activities hit record highs since 2014, totaling AED8 billion and AED4.6 billion, respectively. The quarterly growth rate of the two activities on an annual basis reached 14.5% and 9.8%, respectively, compared to the same period last year.

The unprecedented growth of these activities reflects positive impact of the wise economic policies followed by the Abu Dhabi government to develop information, communications, and public health services.

According to the statistical estimates, the financial sector exhibited extraordinary growth in Q2 2023, reaching its highest growth rate since 2014 at 29.7%. The sector’s value-added has also escalated to over AED18 billion for the same quarter, a five-year high, thanks to the prudent financial and banking policies aimed at boosting Abu Dhabi’s competitive edge both locally and globally.

Additionally, the transportation and storage economic activity and the accommodation and food services activity flourished, with growth rates reaching 16.9% and 13.6%, respectively, during the second quarter of 2023 compared to the same period last year.

Abu Dhabi to Host Leaders, CEOs at World Investment Forum

The forum will also address how the sustainable finance market can help build a low-carbon future and increase investment in sustainable energy…reports Asian Lite News

The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) will hold the World Investment Forum 2023 in Abu Dhabi to rally investments for climate action, clean energy, health care, food security and other development needs.

Heads of state, more than 50 government ministers, over 150 CEOs of leading companies and stock exchanges, and thousands of investment stakeholders, more than 7,000 stakeholders from 160 countries will convene in Abu Dhabi from 16th to 20th October to revitalise global investment flows across critical sectors and will participate in more than 130 events co-organised with over 80 partners.

According to UNCTAD’s World Investment Report 2023, overlapping crises led to a 12% decline in global foreign direct investment in 2022.

Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade, said, “It is an undeniably challenging moment for the global economy and for the economies of the Global South in particular. As we confront the triple shocks of inflation, geopolitical uncertainty and climate change, balancing prosperity and sustainability requires a combination of innovation, investment and, perhaps above all, will.”

He added that the forum provides an opportune moment for the global investment community, supported by policymakers and institutions, to mobilise and direct capital to projects that can fast-track environmentally responsible and socially beneficial development.

“As a consistent advocate for both equitable, inclusive growth and trade’s role in driving it, the UAE is eager to contribute to a solutions-oriented forum that can begin to write a positive new chapter for the world,” he said.

Ahmed Jasim Al Zaabi, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development and Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), said, “Abu Dhabi is taking a leading role in defining the new architecture for climate finance through concrete actions, including its recently released comprehensive regulatory framework for sustainable finance that rivals global standards.”

By setting stringent requirements for sustainability-focused products and services, he added, ADGM is putting in place a progressive framework that drives capital towards projects, advancing climate transition for a net-zero future.

Al Zaabi added, “We look forward to welcoming global leaders, entrepreneurs, investors, and government representatives to the ‘Capital of Capital’, and we are confident that our collaboration will result in tangible outcomes that will benefit the global economy by supporting inclusive and advanced flow of trade and creating new opportunities for business owners and investors.”

UNCTAD Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan said, “As the world faces multiple crises, we urgently need investment stakeholders worldwide to ignite action, unlock more funds and channel them to vital sectors key to reducing the effects of these crises.”

On climate action, this eighth edition of the World Investment Forum will highlight investment solutions that will feed into negotiations at the 28th UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) scheduled for late November in Dubai.

Forum participants will agree on actions to boost clean energy investments in developing countries, which face an investment gap of $2.2 trillion annually for the transition to low-carbon energy, according to the World Investment Report 2023.

The forum will also address how the sustainable finance market can help build a low-carbon future and increase investment in sustainable energy.

The value of the global sustainable finance market (bonds, funds and voluntary carbon markets) reached $5.8 trillion in 2022, despite the turbulent economic environment, including high inflation, rising interest rates, poor market returns and the looming risk of a recession that all affected the financial markets.

The forum will also explore opportunities to boost investment in health care. Developing countries alone need at least $100 billion in additional investment in healthcare facilities and infrastructure each year.

They will also examine how to increase public and private sector investment in agrifood systems to reduce food insecurity, foster rural employment, particularly for women and youth, and increase incomes.

Countries need up to $350 billion annually for the next decade to transform agrifood systems, which can also help tackle climate change and biodiversity loss.

The forum will also offer countries a platform to translate their commitments on investment facilitation into tangible actions and reforms.

James Zhan, the UNCTAD director who leads the World Investment Forum, said, “This a golden opportunity for developing countries to examine how they can bridge investment gaps through more efficient investment promotion and facilitation.”

The 12-month period from July 2022 to June 2023 recorded a 16.6 per cent increase in the number of new industrial Rowad licences granted in Abu Dhabi, from 204 to 238….reports Asian Lite News

Launched by H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Council in June 2022, the Abu Dhabi Industrial Strategy (ADIS) has accelerated the transformation of the emirate’s manufacturing sector, strengthening its position as the region’s most competitive industrial hub within its first year.

Increased activity has been registered across all three stages of Abu Dhabi’s manufacturer licensing journey: Rowad (initial licence to establish an industrial company), construction (to begin constructing an industrial facility) and production (to commence operations).

The 12-month period from July 2022 to June 2023 recorded a 16.6 per cent increase in the number of new industrial Rowad licences granted in Abu Dhabi, from 204 to 238. 116 new Rowad industrial licences were issued during H1 2023 alone, an increase of 63.3 per cent from the number issued in H1 2022.

AED15.36 billion in capital investments made by manufacturing facilities moved to the in-production phase over the year, a growth of 85.7 per cent from a year earlier. As a result, total capital investments by manufacturers operating in the emirate grew AED12.42 billion to AED384.06 billion in the same period, up from AED371.64 billion a year ago.

The number of operational manufacturers in the emirate now stands at 966, up from 922 manufacturers at the end of H1 2022.

Ahmed Jasim Al Zaabi, Chairman of ADDED, said: “Guided by our leadership’s foresight and unwavering commitment, ADDED is doubling down on its efforts to enhance Abu Dhabi’s competitiveness through a new multi-polar economic strategy, where the industrial strategy sits at its core. Al Zaabi added: “The robust performance of the manufacturing sector is testament to Abu Dhabi’s ongoing economic resilience. The strategy involves an investment of AED 10 billion across six transformational programmes: Talent Development, Industry 4.0, Circular Economy, Ecosystem Enablement, Homegrown Supply Chain, and Value Chain Development.

Over the past year, the Industrial Development Bureau (IDB), ADDED’s industrial sector development arm, has launched several initiatives to deliver on the goals of the strategy, including the Industrial Talent Programme, which is helping attract, develop, and upskill human capital in the industrial sector to meet the increased demand for knowledge-based jobs. IDB also launched ‘Tech Champions’, a pilot programme to equip employees of food manufacturing factories in Abu Dhabi with Industry 4.0 skills, which graduated its first cohort in May 2023.

During the year, IDB also unveiled a smart manufacturing competence centre to support sector-wide Industry 4.0 transition, an incentive programme to support existing industrial SMEs adopt smart manufacturing methods and processes, and a value chain development programme to further enhance the industrial investment ecosystem.
