In 2023, women Hosts in India, constituting nearly 30 percent of the country’s Airbnb hosting community, have been instrumental in creating unique guest experiences. Indian women Hosts collectively earned over Rs. 2 billion (approximately 200 crores / USD 28 million) in 2023, showcasing the profound impact of women in stimulating local economies and supporting community growth. These women not only offer exceptional experiences to travellers but also empower others by creating job opportunities, especially for those in underserved communities.

Talking about her hosting journey on Airbnb, Superhost Anooradha who has been hosting since 2017 said, “I find great fulfillment in engaging with individuals who share similar interests and values. This passion prompted me to embark on my Airbnb journey seven years ago, initially hosting guests at the retreat nestled within our holiday home. While the supplementary income has certainly been beneficial, what truly resonates with me is the platform’s ability to foster meaningful connections with guests. These connections, in my view, are immensely empowering. For any women considering embarking on their hosting venture, I encourage you to infuse your personal touch, warmth, and creativity in your home. This is what ultimately creates a memorable and distinctive experience for guests.”

Sharing her story, Superhost Sumana said, “As a female residing in the vibrant city of Bhubaneswar, hosting on Airbnb has led me to a path of inner strength while pursuing my passions and garnering financial independence. Transitioning from a corporate job to becoming a full-time host has brought me immense stability and peace. It allows me to forge meaningful connections with guests from all over the country while immersing myself in their stories and experiences. The satisfaction of accommodating guests’ needs and witnessing their joy remains a heartwarming reward for me. I look forward to more such experiences to serve and connect with people and inspire more women to embark on this unique journey of strength and resilience.”

Talking about the role women are increasingly playing in enabling the platform and highlighting Airbnb’s dedication to fostering an inclusive, diverse, and equitable community, Amanpreet Bajaj, General Manager – Airbnb India, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan said, “Women play a vital role in fueling economies, by driving growth & social transformation. Airbnb, Uttarakhand Tourism Board Join Forces to Boost Untapped Destinations

The partnership will focus on onboarding homestays onto the Airbnb platform. Airbnb will conduct workshops in the identified pilot destinations to train ‘model hosts’ on setting up their profiles, optimizing listing content, and capturing attractive photographs to attract travellers….reports Asian Lite News

Airbnb signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB), to build host capacity in untapped destinations, thereby redirecting travellers from the state’s traditionally popular spots to lesser-explored gems.On the signing of the MoU, Sachin Kurve, Secretary, Tourism, and CEO, UTDB, Government of Uttarakhand, said, “Uttarakhand is known for its warm hospitality and its rich tapestry of pristine trekking trails, diverse wildlife, serene hill stations, pilgrimage sites, and more. This partnership with Airbnb will further expand our efforts to promote homestay culture in our state. Individuals in the tourism sector will receive training on responsible hosting which will unlock their potential to attract guests from India and abroad. Through this partnership, we’re confident the travelers will be presented with enriching, immersive experiences that allow them to witness Uttarakhand’s beauty up close.” This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to preserving the state’s cultural heritage, natural beauty, and unique traditions, while promoting responsible and conscious travel practices in the state, which further uplifts the local communities while delivering enriching experiences for the travellers.

Key elements of the MoU include: Capacity Building – Airbnb will undertake capacity building activities in the select pilot locations to enhance local hospitality standards, hosting best practices, and responsible hosting. Workshops will be organized for a select group of ‘model hosts,’ who will then impart their knowledge and expertise to other members of their community.

Onboarding homestays – The partnership will focus on onboarding homestays onto the Airbnb platform. Airbnb will conduct workshops in the identified pilot destinations to train ‘model hosts’ on setting up their profiles, optimizing listing content, and capturing attractive photographs to attract travellers.

Creating a robust homestay ecosystem – Airbnb will conduct a thorough review of homestay-specific gaps in the identified pilot destinations and share its assessment with UTDB. This valuable input will help UTDB formulate a targeted support strategy for homestays, thus fostering inclusive growth within the region.

Training and seamless integration – Airbnb will work with the identified district tourism officers appointed as points of contact (PoCs) for seamless coordination, offering venue support for workshops and events, a list of registered homestays in pilot locations, shortlist and mobilize ‘model hosts’.Amanpreet Bajaj, General Manager – India, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan at Airbnb, said, “We are proud to partner with the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB). With this partnership, we aim to empower microentrepreneurs in the region by offering them training on hospitality standards, sharing hosting best practices and encouragingresponsible hosting initiatives. Airbnb has consistently placed Hosts and their empowerment at its core, and we are looking forward to working with the government to onboard homestays in the state on our platform.”

Airbnb Ventures into AI

Gameplanner.AI was founded in 2020 by former Siri co-founder Adam Cheyer and Siamak Hodjat….reports Asian Lite News

Hospitality major Airbnb has acquired AI company GamePlanner.AI, which was in “stealth” mode and led by a Siri co-founder, for nearly $200 million, to use generative AI for trip planning.

Gameplanner.AI was founded in 2020 by former Siri co-founder Adam Cheyer and Siamak Hodjat.

“What makes GamePlanner.AI so special is that they combine expertise in AI, design, and community,” said Airbnb CEO and co-founder Brian Chesky.

“Airbnb is one of the more humanistic companies in technology, and I believe that, together with Adam and his team, we can develop some of the best interfaces and practical applications for AI,” he said in a statement late on Tuesday.

While Airbnb is already using AI across its service, including large language models, computer vision models and machine learning, Cheyer and Hodjat’s team will focus on accelerating select AI projects and integrating their tools into its platform.

Cheyer co-founded Siri, which was acquired by Apple, and then led server side engineering and AI for Siri, while working alongside Steve Jobs.

He later co-founded Viv Labs, which was acquired by Samsung and is now known as the company’s voice assistant Bixby.

Cheyer was also on the founding team of Change.org, the world’s largest petition platform.

Alongside Cheyer, Hodjat led the natural language processing team for Siri at Apple and led the largest engineering team for Viv Labs at Samsung.

“A big part of what attracted us to Airbnb was our shared commitment to using AI to enable human connection,” said Cheyer.

“I believe that without great design and community-based intelligence, AI can only achieve a fraction of its potential. But with them, the sky’s the limit. The Airbnb team understands this better than anyone,” he added.

Airbnb has grown to over 4 million hosts who have welcomed over 1.5 billion guest arrivals in almost every country across the globe.
