Amazon gives 10,000 oxygen concentrators to India

The company said that the organisations are working closely with the Indian government to expedite the entry of these oxygen concentrators and BiPAP machines into the country.

India is going through a tough stage or crisis related to Oxygen and Covid management. Amazon on Sunday announced to donate 10,000 oxygen concentrators and BiPAP machines to hospitals and public institutions to augment their capacity to help Covid-19, infected patients, across multiple cities in India.

The first of these consignments was set to land in Mumbai on Sunday and a majority of the shipping is expected to be completed by April 30.

Amazon has joined hands with ACT Grants, Temasek Foundation, Pune Platform for COVID-19 Response (PPCR) and other partners to urgently airlift over 8,000 oxygen concentrators and 500 BiPAP machines from Singapore.

Additionally, Amazon India is also procuring over 1,500 oxygen concentrators and other critical medical equipment in partnership with non-profits including Swasth, Concern India and impact organisations like ACT Grants and Sattva Consulting.

The company said that the organisations are working closely with the Indian government to expedite the entry of these oxygen concentrators and BiPAP machines into the country.

“We stand firmly with the country, deploying our global logistics network to urgently airlift the needed oxygen concentrators to support the nation’s immediate need,” said Amit Agarwal, Global SVP and Country Head, Amazon India.

Amazon will bear the cost of airlifting these oxygen concentrators and BiPAP machines, procured through multiple funders including ACT Grants and PPCR from Singapore to India through Air India and other international carriers.

Additionally, the company will also manage the movement of these oxygen concentrators and other donations from the local airport to identified hospitals and institutions.

Amazon may soon allow sellers to directly connect with customers via emails about new product announcements and sales.

The e-commerce giant is currently testing this new feature called “Manage Your Customer Engagement” that will help sellers contact Amazon users who have specifically chosen to follow a particular company, reports CNBC.

The new email campaign option is a free service for sellers, but it’s only available to brands registered through Amazon’s Brand Registry programme.

Launched in 2015, Brand Registry helps businesses curb the sale of counterfeits and more than 350,000 brands have registered to be part of the programme.

“Shoppers’ contact information will continue to remain private. Amazon will give companies aggregate data when they use the tool that shows them how many emails will go out when they decide to share marketing campaigns with their followers,” the report mentioned on Friday.

Amazon will tell brands how many customers have opted to receive the emails, along with performance metrics for the campaign.

“Amazon is committed to serving our shoppers by helping them engage with their favourite brands. With Manage Your Customer Engagement, brands will be able to initiate email campaigns about new product announcements and offers that Amazon will send to shoppers who choose to follow the brand,” a company spokesperson was quoted as saying.

Bezos said that Amazon has created $1.6 trillion of wealth for share owners…reports Asian Lite News.

Another pride for Jeff Bezos that Amazon Prime has reached a user base of 200 million, according to the outgoing CEO, which is an increase of over 50 million during the pandemic only.

In his final annual letter to Amazon’s shareholders on Thursday, Bezos who will be replaced by former AWS head Andy Jassy as Amazon CEO this year, said that customers have connected more than 100 million smart home devices to Alexa.

“Last year, we hired 500,000 employees and now directly employ 1.3 million people around the world. We have more than 200 million Prime members worldwide. More than 1.9 million small and medium-sized businesses sell in our store, and they make up close to 60 per cent of our retail sales,” Bezos informed.

“Customers have connected more than 100 million smart home devices to Alexa. Amazon Web Services serves millions of customers and ended 2020 with a $50 billion annualised run rate,” he added.

Bezos said that Amazon has created $1.6 trillion of wealth for share owners.

On the Cloud services vertical, Bezos said that across AWS’s entire 2020 revenue of $45 billion, “that 30 per cent would imply customer value creation of $19 billion (what would have cost them $64 billion on their own cost $45 billion from AWS).

“To be conservative here (and remembering we’re really only trying to get ballpark estimates), I’ll say it’s the same and call AWS customer value creation $38 billion in 2020. Adding AWS and consumer together gives us total customer value creation in 2020 of $164 billion,” he noted.

According to him, this value creation is not a zero-sum game.

“It is not just moving money from one pocket to another. Draw the box big around all of society, and you’ll find that invention is the root of all real value creation. And value created is best thought of as a metric for innovation,” Bezos stressed.
