Owaisi calls for quotas for Muslim women

Owaisi’s remarks come amidst the ongoing election campaign in Kishanganj, where the AIMIM’s provincial unit chief and MLA Akhtarul Iman is contesting. …reports Asian Lite News

AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi has raised a significant concern regarding the underrepresentation of Muslim women in Parliament, advocating for quotas to address this issue. Speaking at an election rally in Bihar’s Kishanganj, Owaisi highlighted the stark reality of minimal female representation, particularly from the minority community, in the country’s legislative body.

Pointing to the historical context, Owaisi emphasized that out of the 17 Lok Sabha elections since Independence, only around 20 Muslim women have secured seats in Parliament. This glaring disparity underscores the urgent need for affirmative action to ensure greater participation of Muslim women in politics.

Owaisi’s remarks come amidst the ongoing election campaign in Kishanganj, where the AIMIM’s provincial unit chief and MLA Akhtarul Iman is contesting. Addressing allegations by the BJP-RSS accusing AIMIM of opposing women’s political engagement, Owaisi cited the party’s past support for female candidates, such as the late leader Humera Aziz who contested from Secunderabad in 2004.

BJP candidate files complaint against Owaisi

Bharatiya Janata Party candidate from Hyderabad Madhavi Latha lodged a complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) against AIMIM chief and Hyderabad party candidate Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday.

The complaint to the poll body came in response to a recent video that surfaced on social media showing Owaisi allegedly engaging with a butcher during his campaign in the Old City area.

In the video, he was allegedly heard encouraging the butcher to continue his profession by saying “kaat te raho” in Urdu, along with expressing support for beef consumption with the phrase “beef zindabad.”

Earlier today, AIMIM chief Owaisi addressed a public rally in support of party candidate Akhtarul Iman and said that the Lok Sabha elections of Kisanganj people’s prestige.

“This is an election of Kisanganj people’s prestige…this is an election of Seemanchal and Kisanganj’s prestige…therefore I am here to appeal for AIMIM candidate Akhtarul Iman, who gave everything to poor people,” he said.

Earlier on Sunday, a resident of First Lancer, Hyderabad, lodged a complaint on Sunday against Kompella Madhavi Latha, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency, following a controversy involving a video that appears to depict her gesturing as if shooting an arrow towards a mosque.

The BJP candidate from the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency, Latha, has courted controversy after a video of her gesturing to shoot an arrow, purportedly in the direction of a mosque, came to light.

The old city, comprising two Lok Sabha seats–Hyderabad and Secunderabad–will poll for the Lok Sabha on May 13. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.

Owaisi, who has served four terms in the Lok Sabha as the elected representative from Hyderabad since 2004, was previously elected as an MLA twice in the erstwhile undivided Andhra Pradesh.

The Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency comprises seven assembly segments–Bahadurpura, Chandrayangutta, Charminar, Goshamahal, Karwan, Malakpet and Yakatpura. All assembly seats, except Goshamahal, are presently held by the AIMIM.

Since 1984, candidates from the Owaisi family or those supported by them, have been elected from Hyderabad, with Owaisi currently serving as the Lok Sabha member from the prestigious seat. (with inputs from agencies)

UP Dy CM calls AIMIM as SP, BSP’s B-Team

He claimed that every section of the society, including Brahmins, Dalits and OBCs, are with the BJP in Uttar Pradesh…reports Asian Lite News.

Terming Asaduddin Owaisi as the ‘B team’ of Samajwadi Party (SP), Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma alleged on Monday that the AIMIM chief is acting like an election agent for the SP and BSP.

Talking to the media after a review meeting on the functioning of BJP-ruled states at the party headquarters here, Sharma said that earlier the SP used to polarise minorities by “instigating” them, but this time they will use Owaisi for that.

Sharma further said that Owaisi is trying to polarise the society by making statements such as “who will save you after Modi, Yogi will not be there”, but the opposition parties should know that it will take years for them to challenge the BJP.

Taking a jibe at Akhilesh Yadav’s statement terming the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister as “useless”, Sharma said that the Yogi government is “useless” for the mafia, for the corrupt, for those who occupy houses and for those who insult women; but the way the government has worked for the common and the poor man, it is “useful” for them, he said.

Responding to a question on anger among the Brahmin community, Sharma said, “Brahmin is not a caste but a ritual; it is a name for the method of leading a noble life. The opposition parties have misunderstood Brahmins.”

He claimed that every section of the society, including Brahmins, Dalits and OBCs, are with the BJP in Uttar Pradesh.

Highlighting the “achievements” of the Yogi government, Sharma said that the state, which was once known for illegal guns and ‘kattas’, is now going to produce automatic rifles and BrahMos missiles. He added that Uttar Pradesh has now become a “state for industry, not crime”.

Taking a dig at the opposition parties, Sharma said that because of Narendra Modi, some “disguised Ram devotees are practicing to ring the bell and read Hanuman Chalisa, but the people of the state are with the BJP and in 2022, the BJP is going to break its previous record”.

Mayawati has no plans for tie-up with Owaisi

Mayawati clarified that party will contest the Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand alone….reports Asian Lite News

Bahujan Samaj Party President Mayawati has said that her party would contest the Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand alone.

In a series of tweets on Sunday, she ruled out reports that the BSP would join hands with Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM in Uttar Pradesh.

“This news is being circulated that the AIMIM and BSP will fight the upcoming assembly elections in UP together. This news is completely false, misleading and baseless. There is not even an iota of truth in this, and BSP vehemently denies it,” she said.

She further said that the BSP would like to clarify that, except for Punjab, the party will contest the Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand alone.

The BSP and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) have allied to contest the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections.

The BSP, which stormed to power in 2007 by winning 206 seats, was left with just 80 seats in 2012.

In 2014, Mayawati’s party did not win a single Lok Sabha seat, and in the 2017 Uttar Assembly elections, it bagged only 19 seats.

With BSP’s support base dwindling over the years, the BJP and the Samajwadi Party have been trying to woo the Dalit voters ahead of the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in 2022.

In April, Akhilesh Yadav announced that Samajwadi Party (SP) will constitute a Baba Saheb Vahini named after Dalit icon Dr B.R. Ambedkar.

The Baba Saheb Vahini aims to bring Dalits into the Samajwadi fold and assure them protection against social exploitation.

The BJP has now announced that it will build a memorial in the name of Ambedkar.

The SP and BSP were allies in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

However, immediately after the Lok Sabha elections, Mayawati snapped ties with the party announcing that her party would never ally with SP again.
