Bumrah Tops, Hazlewood, Lyon Follow

Australia’s Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon have narrowed the gap with ace Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah in the latest ICC Men’s Test Player Rankings following their exceptional performance in the opening game against New Zealand.

With India pace spearhead Bumrah leading the way on the list for Test bowlers, both pacer Hazlewood (up one place to fourth) and spinner Nathan Lyon (up two spots to sixth) have been rewarded for the performance in Wellington.

The Aussie duo shared 14 wickets between them in Australia’s emphatic 172-run victory in the opening Test in Wellington.

Hazlewood picked a pair of New Zealand wickets in each innings while Lyon helped himself to 10 scalps in total as Australia dominated the contest at Basin Reserve.

New Zealand’s Matt Henry and Glenn Phillips each collected a five-wicket haul during that first Test against Australia, with the former moving up seven places to 18th on the list for Test bowlers and the latter improving 19 spots to 48th.

In the batting chart, Australia batter Cameron Green has advanced towards the top 20 after his unbeaten century helped Australia defeat New Zealand by 172 runs in the first Test in Wellington.

Green, who was named Player of the Match for his 174 not out in the first innings, has moved up 22 places to 23rd position.

New Zealand batter Kane Williamson remained on top of the batting chart despite scores of just zero and nine in Wellington while Steve Smith, Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne slipped down the rankings.

Smith has dropped a position to third (behind Joe Root) after scores of 31 and zero, the first time he has gone below 800 rating points since 2014. Labuschagne is out of the top 10 for the first time since December 2019 after managing just three runs in the match.

With Head also slipping one slot, India batters Virat Kohli (one spot to be placed eight, Yashaswi Jaiswal (up two places to 10th) and Rohit Sharma (up two places to 11th) have all gained in the rankings.

The latest weekly update to the men’s rankings also considers performances in the one-off Test between Afghanistan and Ireland in Abu Dhabi.

Mark Adair has moved up 30 slots to 69th position among bowlers after finishing with an eight-wicket match haul that helped Ireland win their first Test in history.

Andy Balbirnie, Curtis Campher, Paul Stirling and Andy McBrine have all moved up within the top 100 in the batting rankings.

Afghanistan batter Hashmatullah Shahidi has gained five slots to reach 81st position while Naveed Zadran has moved up 32 places to reach 79th position among bowlers.

Bumrah’s Absence Worries India in Ranchi

Former Australian cricketer Brad Hogg feels that Indian star pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s absence in the fourth Test against England, stating on Friday, could spell trouble for the hosts adding that it will add pressure on his fellow fast bowler Mohammad Siraj.

Bumrah’s stellar performance in the series thus far, coupled with his ability to generate reverse swing, has made him a formidable force in India’s bowling arsenal. With 17 wickets to his name and a Player of the Match award under his belt, Bumrah’s absence leaves a significant void in the Indian lineup, according to Hogg.

“Bumrah not playing the next match is obviously going to play in the hands of England. Getting a bit of reverse swing, he is probably the best fast bowler in this Test series. It is going to cause India some problems going into the next game. It is going to put a lot of pressure on Siraj,” said Brad Hogg on his YouTube channel.

However, Hogg also acknowledges the necessity of managing Bumrah’s workload, particularly with major tournaments like the T20 World Cup and the IPL on the horizon. He also expressed confidence in Siraj’s ability to step up and lead the bowling attack.

“You have to manage his workload. As a fast bowler, playing all three formats is the toughest thing in cricket. You need to preserve him for the T20 World Cup around the corner. Mumbai Indians need him too in the IPL. If they miss him, they won’t be doing well either,” he said.

In addition to discussing India’s bowling conundrum, Hogg showers praise on Indian captain Rohit Sharma for his leadership tactics against England in Rajkot.

“I am loving the way Rohit Sharma is captaining this team against England. I like the way he is backing his bowlers. Yes England are going hard against the bowlers, but you got to show the courage to set the right fields and give your bowlers the best chance of picking wickets,” added Hogg.

Meanwhile, as England prepares for the Ranchi Test, they’ve made strategic changes to their lineup, with Ollie Robinson and Shoaib Bashir stepping in. With the spotlight now on India’s selection dilemma in Bumrah’s absence, speculation abounds regarding their choice of replacement, whether it be an extra spinner, Mukesh Kumar, or debutant Akash Deep.

The fourth Test of the five-match Test series will start on Friday at Ranchi.

Robinson, Bashir Make ENG XI

England have brought in fast-bowler Ollie Robinson and off-spinner Shoaib Bashir into their playing eleven for the fourth Test against India, starting here at the JSCA International Stadium on Friday.

The duo replace tearaway pacer Mark Wood and leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed respectively in the starting eleven at Ranchi, which shapes to be a crucial Test for England. The visitors’ are 2-1 behind in the ongoing five-match series following the heavy 434-run defeat at Rajkot.

The Ben Stokes-led side must win at Ranchi to force the last Test match at Dharamshala into a series decider. Robinson’s last Test match for England was the third Ashes game at Headingley last year, where he bowled just 11.2 overs in the first innings before a back spasm forced him on the sidelines for the rest of the series.

The Test at Ranchi will also be Robinson’s first game in India in the longer format. On the other hand, this will be Bashir’s second game in the format after being handed his Test debut at Visakhapatnam, where he picked four wickets.

While Robinson and James Anderson will handle the fast-bowling duties, Bashir joins Tom Hartley and part-timer Joe Root in the spin-bowling department. Jonny Bairstow has retained his place in the playing eleven despite averaging 17 in the ongoing series, with his highest score being 37.

Bumrah Breakthrough

Fast-bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has become the first India pacer to top the ICC Men’s Test Bowling Rankings. In the latest update to the rankings on Wednesday, Bumrah was propelled to top of the Test bowlers’ ranking after an outstanding haul of nine wickets in the second Test against England in Visakhapatnam, which India won by 10 runs.

Bumrah’s nine-wicket match haul, which included a brilliant 6/45 in the first innings at Visakhapatnam, has helped him leapfrog Pat Cummins, Kagiso Rabada and compatriot Ravichandran Ashwin. Bumrah is now only the fourth bowler from his country to attain number one position in Test bowlers’ rankings after spinners Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Bishan Singh Bedi.

Bumrah, who was named Player of the Match after helping India level the five-match series with a 106-run victory in Visakhapatnam, ended Ashwin’s 11-month long reign at the top. Bumrah now has a tally of 881 rating points with Ashwin (904) and Jadeja (899) the only India bowlers to have aggregated more rating points.

Ashwin, who is now at second place in the bowlers rankings after picking just three wickets at Visakhapatnam, and Jadeja, currently nursing a hamstring injury, also have the unique distinction of being jointly top-ranked, in March 2017. Left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav has moved up four places to 45th position after a strong return to the Test team in Visakhapatnam.

The batting rankings see left-handed opener Yashasvi Jaiswal progress 37 places to 29th after completing a fine career-best 209 in the first innings, while right-handed batter Shubman Gill go up 14 places to a career-best 38th after notching 104 in the second innings.

For England, opener Zak Crawley is another player to gain after the Visakhapatnam Test, moving up eight places to a career-best 22nd position after scores of 76 and 73. Rookie leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed has moved up 14 places to 70th position.

Left-arm spinner Tom Hartley, who became just the second England player with at least 50 runs and five wickets in each of his first two Tests, has advanced in both lists – up from 103rd to 95th in the batting rankings and from 63rd to 53rd in the bowling rankings.

Post the completion of the one-off Test between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in Colombo, left-arm spinner Prabhath Jayasuriya has moved up to three places to a career-best sixth position after his eight-wicket match haul helped the hosts’ win by 10 wickets.

Asitha Fernando (up seven places to 34th) and Vishwa Fernando (up nine places to 51st) are other Sri Lanka bowlers to move up while Angelo Mathews (up four places to 24th) has advanced in the batting rankings after top-scoring in the match with 141.

For Afghanistan, opener Ibrahim Zadran has moved up 17 places to 54th after a fighting 114 in the second innings while Rahmat Shah (up 16 places to 66th) and Noor Ali Zadran (entered the rankings in 92nd position) are some other notable movements.

In the Men’s ODI Rankings, Australia leg-spinner Adam Zampa is up one place to third and fast bowler Sean Abbott’s six wickets in the three-match series against the West Indies this past week have lifted him 35 places to joint-33rd position. West Indies’ left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie has improved his ranking from 61st to 54th after finishing with four wickets in the series.

Series Saved: Bumrah, Ashwin Seal the Deal

Brilliant bowling spells from Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin helped India overcome a fighting England as they levelled the series with a 106-run win in the second Test at Visakhapatnam on Sunday.

India has levelled the five-match series 1-1.

England started the second session at 194/6, with skipper Ben Stokes joined by wicketkeeper-batter Ben Foakes.

A boundary by Foakes to Bumrah helped England reach the 200-run mark in 46.1 overs.

But disaster struck for England before they could have a big partnership. Some lazy running between the wickets ran out skipper Stokes for just 11 runs in 29 balls. Shreyas Iyer’s remarkable effort saw him assist India in removing England’s crisis man, reducing them to 220/7.

Foakes was next joined by Tom Hartley, with England needing something great and supportive out of this young spinner with a first-class batting average of over 28.

Having troubled the Indian batters earlier, Hartley now irritated the Indian spinners with some occasional big hits.

England reached the 250-run mark in 59.5 overs.

A half-century partnership was up between Foakes and Hartley in just 63 balls and it seemed England could breathe a little.

In the next tense few minutes, Hartley survived a close leg-before-wicket call on a Ravichandran Ashwin delivery and Foakes threw his wicket with a soft dismissal, with the catch landing in Jasprit Bumrah’s hands, who got his second wicket.

Foakes was gone for 36 in 69 balls, with four boundaries and a six. England was 275/8, 124 runs away from a win but with just two wickets left.

Pacer Mukesh Kumar removed the debutant Shoaib Bashir for an eight-ball duck after being caught behind by KS Bharat. England was 281/9, 118 runs away from a victory, but with just a wicket left. Everything now was dependent on Hartley, who was joined by James Anderson.

Bumrah got the final wicket, cleaning up Hartley for 36. England was bundled out for 292 and lost by 106 runs.

Bumrah (3/46) and Ashwin (3/72) were the pick of the bowlers for India. Kuldeep Yadav, Mukesh and Axar Patel managed to get a wicket each.

Earlier, Zak Crawley unleashed a solid counterattack, but the brilliance of India spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav derailed England’s solid effort at chasing 399 runs in the second Test, reducing them to 194/6 at the end of the first session on day four at Visakhapatnam on Monday.

At Lunch, England was 194/6, with skipper Ben Stokes (0*) unbeaten.

England started the day four at 67/1, chasing 399 runs to win, with Zak Crawley (29*) and Rehan Ahmed (9*) unbeaten.

England kept going with their aggressive approach as Rehan targetted spinner Axar Patel and Crawley smashed Jasprit Bumrah for two cracking fours.

However, Axar soon swung things in India’s way, removing Rehan for 23 in 21 balls, with five fours. England was 95/2.

Ollie Pope was next up on the crease.

England reached the 100-run mark in 22.1 overs, with a double by Crawley.

Crawley and Pope kept punishing bowlers, hitting Axar for a hat-trick of boundaries. Crawley also reached his half-century in 83 balls, with seven fours and a six.

Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin sent the English camp into worries once again, getting Ollie caught by skipper Rohit at slips for 23 and getting the big scalp of Joe Root for 16 in 10 balls. Root played another ugly shot and was caught by Axar. England was 154/4 in 31 overs.

Jonny Bairstow was next up on the crease. Crawley was punishing bowlers as usual and along with Bairstow seemed to bring England back on track and towards the 200-run mark.

However, Kuldeep Yadav changed the game, trapping Crawley leg-before wicket for 73 in 132 balls, with eight fours and a six. In the next over, Bairstow was removed for 26 in 36 balls by Bumrah with another lbw. England sunk to 194/6 at the end of the first session.

Bumrah-Led India squad departs for Ireland T20Is

The three T20I matches between India and Ireland will be played at Malahide Cricket Club Ground in Dublin on August 18, 20 and 23….reports Asian Lite News

The Indian team led by Jasprit Bumrah departs for Ireland on Tuesday morning for the three-match T20I series. The BCCI has taken to social media to release images of the team’s departure for Ireland.

The official Instagram handle of the BCCI also shared a series of pictures from the team’s departure, featuring the likes of Bumrah, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Prasidh Krishna, Rinku Singh and Shivam Dube.

The three T20I matches between India and Ireland will be played at Malahide Cricket Club Ground in Dublin on August 18, 20 and 23. India and Ireland played a two-match T20I series in June 2022, with the visitors winning the series 2-0, though the hosts came close to winning.

There will be numerous comebacks in the series, with the return of experienced fast bowler Bumrah, who has been nursing a back injury since his last outing against England in 2022. The pacer is entrusted with the captaincy role of the T20I team for the first time.

Karnataka quick Prasidh Krishna has also made a comeback after being out of action since August 2022 due to a lumbar stress fracture.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was named the captain of a young team to feature in the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou, will be Bumrah’s deputy in the series.

For the tour of Ireland, Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma, Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, and Shahbaz Ahmed have also been included, with Ruturaj Gaikwad appointed as vice-captain of the side.

Bumrah set to undergo surgery in New Zealand

India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is likely to fly to New Zealand to undergo surgery for his back injury.

According to a Cricbuzz report, the medical team of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the managers of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) have finalised a surgeon named Rowan Schouten, who had worked on England pacer Jofra Archer

The arrangements are being made on a war footing to have Bumrah, who has been out of action for the last five months, flown to Auckland at the earliest for the surgery.

Schouten, in the past, had worked with renowned orthopedic surgeon Grahame Inglis, who had operated upon a few New Zealand players, including Shane Bond — the bowling coach of Mumbai Indians, who is likely to have suggested Schouten’s name.

The report further said that Schouten had also assisted Inglis in the surgery of Australian pacer James Pattinson while he also handled Ben Dwarshuis and Jason Behrendorff’s surgery, who had also struggled with back issues.

The recovery time for Bumrah is somewhere between 20 and 24 weeks, which means he could miss the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 and the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) in London, should India qualify.

The right-arm quick last played for India in a T20I against Australia, on September 25 2022 and went to miss the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup due to his back injury.

The current priority of the BCCI management is to get Bumrah ready for the World Cup in October-November.
