Storm Pia brings Christmas travel woes

British Airways was forced to make changes to its flight schedule after air traffic control restrictions in response to the storm, which brought winds of up to 115mph…reports Asian Lite News

The Christmas getaway has been thrown into chaos after Storm Pia brought the transport network to a standstill. All trains going north from London Euston were cancelled for three hours and those from King’s Cross were delayed.

Eurostar and Channel Tunnel services were also cancelled after a sudden strike by French workers, and passengers waiting for ferries at Dover faced 90-minute delays.

British Airways was forced to make changes to its flight schedule after air traffic control restrictions in response to the storm, which brought winds of up to 115mph.

The disruption raised fears that Friday, which is already set to be the busiest day on the roads, will be miserable after passengers unable to travel on Thursday were forced to delay their journeys or drive instead.

The problem is set to be compounded by the planned closure of King’s Cross and Paddington on Christmas Eve for engineering works, further limiting the time passengers have to leave the capital.

Network Rail initially blamed the weather for the disruption at Euston, saying high winds had damaged overhead power lines, but it later emerged that the line was brought to a standstill by an electrical fault on a train.

Train companies, whose disputes with the unions have already brought the country to a standstill this year, were urged to put on extra services to ensure everyone can get home.

MPs said it was ridiculous to blame the weather for the chaos.

Greg Smith, Tory MP and member of the Commons transport select committee, said: “Train operating companies cannot get away every Christmas with blaming the weather for the appalling service. Bad weather at this time of year is not unusual.

“Millions of people need to get around the country to spend time with relatives at Christmas, and they need to get home. But the operators wheel out the excuse of the weather when anyone in the country could have predicted what was going to happen.

“They need to urgently lay on buses – preferably coaches – or find other ways so that people who have paid these extortionate prices for their tickets can get home.”

Both Avanti and LNER, the two main operators serving the North, said they would accept Thursday tickets for Friday’s trains.

However, the railways are already set to be busy, with a survey by passenger group Transport Focus finding that one in four people planning to travel by rail over the Christmas period would be travelling on Friday.

The RAC estimated 13.5 million leisure journeys by car would take place across the UK between Friday and Sunday, up 20 per cent on the three days before Christmas Day last year.

Anyone attempting to drive as an alternative to the railways faces the peak of road congestion on Friday as drivers embarking on leisure trips compete for road space with commuters and business traffic.

Motorists are being advised to travel before 11am or after 6pm if possible to reduce the chance of being stuck in long queues. London Paddington will be closed between December 24 and 27, meaning no mainline trains will serve Heathrow Airport during that period. King’s Cross will also be closed on Christmas Eve.

Smith urged Network Rail to cancel these works. “This is what is happening on the roads – roadworks have been reduced to the bare minimum over Christmas,” he said.

“Network Rail should have done the same. Millions of people are moving around the country and it is just plain stupid to have engineering works at such a critical time of year.”

Wera Hobhouse, the Liberal Democrat transport spokesman, said: “At this time of year people are relying on public transport so they can spend Christmas with loved ones. But constant chaos on the railways is adding hours onto people’s journeys and the trains that are running are overcrowded.

“Rail companies must do more to make sure that people can get home for the holidays, whether that’s more carriages on the trains that are running or suitable replacement options to make sure people aren’t stranded.”

Gusts of 115mph were recorded at Cairngorm Summit on Thursday and winds of 81mph were recorded at Brizlee Wood, near Alnwick, Northumberland.

TransPennine Express urged passengers to avoid travelling to or from Edinburgh all day on Thursday, and to only make journeys to and from Carlisle and Manchester, Liverpool and Preston after 3pm.

On Thursday afternoon, Network Rail originally said there were no trains from Euston because of damaged overhead power cables.

But later they said the real problem was a fault on a single train. Services began again, but delays were expected to continue for hours. A spokesman said: “The incident took place in the Bourne End area at around 12.15pm and is believed to have been caused by a fault on a train.

“All lines were closed while investigations took place into the incident, including drone surveys of the lines, but trains were on the move soon after 3pm.” The problems affected Avanti West Coast services between London Euston and Scotland. At least 144 trains departing from Euston and Kings Cross were cancelled on Thursday, affecting up to 85,000 people trying to leave the capital alone.

The Snowman Brings Christmas Magic Back To Peacock Theatre

The Snowman brings Christmas magic back to Peacock Theatre this winter. A preview feature by Lifestyle columnist Riccha Grrover for Asian Lite International.

Christmas classic The Snowman returns to its Sadler’s Wells’ home in the West End, Peacock Theatre from Saturday 18 November – Saturday 30 December 2023 for its 26th edition. The dance show is an adaptation of the much-loved picture book by Raymond Briggs and the film directed by Dianne Jackson, which originated at the Birmingham Rep.

Featuring the iconic music and lyrics by Howard Blake, including ‘Walking in the Air’, all played by a live orchestra, The Snowman is directed by Bill Alexander and designed by Ruari Murchison, with choreography by Robert North and Tim Mitchell’s lighting.

This production for all the family follows the story of a young boy’s adventures when his snowman and new friend comes to life on Christmas Eve. They go on a magical adventure to the North Pole where they meet all sorts of characters including dancing penguins, a snow princess and Father Christmas himself. The Snowman is also a remarkable introduction to dance for children.

David Fry, Peacock Theatre Programmer, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming back The Snowman this Christmas. 26 years and counting, this wonderful show still retains all the magic that children associate with this time of year. In its innocence and simplicity, it takes us all back to our childhoods which is probably why it has endured so long. When The Snowman starts, so does Christmas!”

Sean Foley, Birmingham Rep’s Artistic Director, said: “The Snowman is a Rep Original production that we’re incredibly proud of. It has become the longest running Christmas show in English theatre history, and we’re thrilled that Sadler’s Wells has given it a home for the past 26 years. Its magical and musical story never fades, and its message of kindness and friendship remains as strong today as when Raymond Briggs conceived the characters.”

Nurses’ strike could last to Christmas, says union

The Health Secretary called on the RCN to accept the Government’s pay offer so the NHS can “get back to focusing on patients”…reports Asian Lite News

Nurses could strike until Christmas if they cannot reach a deal with the Government, a union leader has warned. Royal College of Nursing (RCN) leader Pat Cullen called for the Government to improve its pay offer to avoid further strikes but assured patients that nurses will come off picket lines to deal with emergencies.

The RCN announced on Friday that its members will walk out for 48 hours from 8pm on April 30 after rejecting the Government’s pay offer.

NHS nurses in emergency departments, intensive care and cancer wards will take industrial action for the first time.

When asked if the union will stop strike action, Cullen told the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg On Sunday programme: “No, our nurses will absolutely not do that.

“We have strike action for the end of this month and the beginning of May. Then we will move immediately to ballot our members. If that ballot is successful it will mean further strike action right up until Christmas.”

The union leader added that nurses saw a one-off Covid bonus offered by the Government as a “bribe”.

NHS Providers deputy chief executive Saffron Cordery told the programme it is “not sustainable” for the NHS to continue managing strike action.

She said: “It’s really clear to me that it’s not sustainable going forward for the NHS to manage strike action. It feels like a really ugly situation to say we are going to have strikes now until Christmas. We really desperately need the Government to come to the table alongside the unions coming to the table to sort this out.”

In an opinion piece for The Sun, Health Secretary Steve Barclay warned that fresh nurses’ strikes would have a “deeply concerning” impact on emergency services and cancer care.

The Health Secretary called on the RCN to accept the Government’s pay offer so the NHS can “get back to focusing on patients”.

On Sunday afternoon, Barclay tweeted a copy of a letter he had sent to Cullen which urged the union to reconsider further industrial action and said he would welcome a meeting to discuss avoiding strikes.

In the letter, Barclay said the most recent pay offer was a “fair and reasonable settlement”, adding: “The decision to refuse at this stage any exemptions for even the most urgent and life-threatening treatment during this action will, I fear, put patients at risk.”

On Friday, Unison’s NHS members accepted the NHS pay offer of a 5% pay rise this year and a cash payment for last year. However, 54% of RCN members voted to reject the deal.

The turnout among RCN members employed on NHS Agenda for Change contracts in England was 61%. The RCN announcement came as around 47,000 junior doctors finished their 96-hour strike in a separate dispute over pay at 7am on Saturday.

Border Force staff begin Christmas walkout

Passengers landing in Britain today face the prospect of long queues as thousands of Border Force begin strike action…reports Asian Lite News

Planes, trains, driving lessons and postal deliveries are set to be disrupted by walkouts in the days before Christmas.

National Highways, Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and Royal Mail employees are due to take industrial action today.

As they continue their strike into Saturday, they will be joined by rail workers represented by the RMT, Abellio London bus workers, and Environment Agency employees, who will launch separate waves of action.

This follows two days of strikes by NHS staff, as thousands of nurses walked out on Tuesday, and ambulance workers joined picket lines on Wednesday.

Passengers landing in Britain today face the prospect of long queues as thousands of Border Force begin strike action.

More than 250,000 passengers arriving at UK airports have been warned to expect delays amid walkouts from the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union.

The walkout will affect travellers at Heathrow, Birmingham, Cardiff, Gatwick, Glasgow and Manchester airports, and the port of Newhaven in East Sussex.

The competition watchdog has launched a more in-depth investigation in Hitachi’s proposed purchase of Thales’s rail infrastructure after warning it could lead to higher prices for passengers.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) raised concerns over the $1.7bn (£1.5bn) deal among the signalling operators earlier this month.

The CMA said it will launch the thorough phase two probe after the firms said they will not be offering any changes to appease the regulator’s competition concerns.

Britain’s principal customer for mainline signalling, Network Rail, is putting in place a tendering process for its next major signalling procurement.

The Office of Rail and Road found earlier that mainline signalling in Britain was provided by only two suppliers – Alstom and Siemens – and it said that lack of competition could increase operators’ costs with “an adverse knock-on effect on taxpayers and passengers”.

A deal between Hitachi and Thales could eliminate a credible competitor from the new tendering process, it said.
