Palestine hails opposition to Israeli settlement project in East Jerusalem

Palestine hailed the international community’s opposition to the reconstruction of 9,000 units in Israeli settlements in East Jerusalem…reports Asian Lite News

The position of the international community “is a practical step in the right direction,” Palestinian Foreign Ministry said in a press statement, adding that “more steps are needed to achieve the goal of stopping the Israeli settlements.”

The statement called on the international community “to exert more efforts to prepare the atmosphere for launching a real peace process in the Middle East based on international peace references and UN resolutions,” Xinhua news agency reported.

It also urged the US to take “practical steps,” mainly reopening the American consulate to run the Palestinians affairs in East Jerusalem.

On Tuesday, Israeli media reported that the planning and construction committee in the Israeli municipality of Jerusalem postponed a project to build more than 9,000 new housing units on the lands of the (Atarot/Qalandia) Airport.

The reports said that the postponement came after the planning committee requested a survey to determine the plan’s environmental impact, a process likely to take months or longer.

It added that the plan presented last month outraged the administration of US President Joe Biden, and was originally opposed by other countries that support the two-state solution.

The Palestinian foreign ministry warned against “Israel’s misleading campaigns regarding its settlement projects in general, especially since the committee postponed the approval of the settlement project and did not cancel it.”

Israel occupied the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which are claimed by the Palestinians, in the 1967 Middle East war and has controlled them ever since.

According to Israeli and Palestinian estimates, about 650,000 Israeli settlers live in 164 settlements and 124 outposts in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Israel’s settlement expansion has been the thorniest issue in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and one of the major reasons behind the stalemate in the peace negotiations between the two sides since 2014.

Israel reinforces security after fatal attack in East Jerusalem

Israel reinforced its security in East Jerusalem on Sunday amid rising tensions in the flashpoint city following a shooting attack that killed one civilian and injured four…reports Asian Lite News

At about 9 a.m. local time (0700 GMT), the attacker, identified by Palestinian media as Fadi Abu Shkhaidem, opened fire at civilians outside the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, a contested site holy to both Muslims and Jews.

One person was critically injured in the shooting and died hours later in hospital, while four more sustained injuries, Xinhua news agency reported quoting statements from the Israeli government and medical facilities.

Israeli state-owned Kan news TV identified the victim as Eliyahu Kay, 26, from Modiin, a city west of Jerusalem. He recently migrated from South Africa to Israel and was employed at the Western Wall, known in Islam as the Buraq Wall, as a tourist guide.

The assailant was shot and killed by the police on the spot, the police said in a statement, adding two of the four injured were police officers who were wounded by shrapnel.

Israeli Minister of Public Security Omer Barlev described the shooter as a member of Hamas and from the Shuafat refugee camp in East Jerusalem. During a tour at the scene, Barlev told journalists that the attacker used a submachine gun.

According to Barlev, the assailant arrived at the Al-Aqsa Mosque for prayers every day. “Today he arrived with a weapon and decided to shoot, unfortunately,” he said.

The attacker Abu Shkhaidem, 42, was a teacher at a religious high school in Jerusalem, according to Israeli media.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack but Hamas praised it and confirmed that Abu Shkhaidem was its member.

Speaking at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said he ordered security forces to be on alert to prevent possible “copycat” attacks that might follow Sunday’s attack.

“I have directed the security forces to prepare accordingly and be alert, also over concern for copycat attacks,” he said. “We need to be on heightened alert and prevent future attacks.”

It was the second attack in East Jerusalem within a week. On Wednesday, a Palestinian teenager was shot dead after he stabbed two police officers, the police said.

Palestine calls on US to reopen Consulate in E.Jerusalem

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Ishtaye has called on US President Joe Biden’s administration to fulfil its promises to the Palestinian Authority, including the reopening the American Consulate in East Jerusalem.

“We call on Washington to accelerate the implementation of what it has promised, mainly reopening the US Consulate in East Jerusalem and removing Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) from the list of terrorism,” Ishtaye said in a statement on Friday.

Ishtaye made the remarks at a meeting with a Democratic Party delegation in the West Bank city of Ramallah, according to the statement.

He urged the delegation to exert more pressure on Israel to allow holding the parliamentary and presidential elections in East Jerusalem and the entire Palestinian territories without any restriction.

Meanwhile, according to the statement, Ishtaye explained to the delegation that the US-backed principle of the two-state solution “is in danger” due to the Israeli measures against the Palestinians, mainly settlement building and expansion.

Israel seized the West Bank and East Jerusalem during the 1967 Middle East war and continues to occupy it despite international criticism.
