Musk says many Twitter workers had their car windows smashed

On June 11, the tech billionaire shared an incident and said that one of his friends experienced a shooting in San Francisco…reports Asian Lite News

Twitter-owner Elon Musk on Thursday said that many Twitter workers feel insecure coming to work in downtown San Francisco and have had their car windows smashed.

Musk tweeted: “Many Twitter employees feel unsafe coming to work in downtown SF and have had their car windows smashed.”

“They also got such a null response from the police that they rarely even bother reporting crimes anymore, because nothing happens,” he wrote.

Several users expressed their thoughts on Musk’s post.

While one user said, “Elon, bring Twitter to Florida,” another commented, “Then why did you make everyone stop working remotely lol.”

On June 11, the tech billionaire shared an incident and said that one of his friends experienced a shooting in San Francisco.

In April this year, he had said that one could literally film a ‘Walking Dead’ episode unedited in downtown San Francisco.

Meanwhile, last month, he had posted, “So many stores shuttered in downtown SF. Feels post-apocalyptic.”

When one user asked “Didn’t you vote for Obama and Biden? Things didn’t turn to shit because of magic.”

“Yes, but they are not to blame for San Francisco. Fundamentally, states and cities must occasionally vote for the other party or you have a one party system. SF is what happens when one party has control for several decades — no feedback loop for correction, because they never lose, no matter how bad it gets,” Musk replied.

Zuckerberg hails Musk

On the ‘The Lex Fridman Podcast’ show, Zuckerberg said that Musk “led a push early on to make Twitter a lot leaner”….reports Asian Lite News

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has praised Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk for making Twitter “a lot leaner” which has been “good for the industry” overall.

On the ‘The Lex Fridman Podcast’ show, Zuckerberg said that Musk “led a push early on to make Twitter a lot leaner”.

“I think that those were generally good changes. I also think that it was probably good for the industry that he made those changes because my sense is that there were a lot of other people who thought that those were good changes but who may have been a little shy about doing them,” Zuckerberg told the host.

According to Meta founder, Musk’s efforts to make the platform more technical by removing layers of management, leaving less distance between engineers at the company and himself was a good move.

After acquiring the platform for $44 billion, Musk brought down Twitter workforce to around 1,000 from nearly 7,800.

Like Musk, Zuckerberg has conducted multiple rounds of layoffs over the past eight months, laying off 21,000 employees in the course of a few months.

He has dubbed 2023 as Meta’s “year of efficiency”.

“As part of the Year of Efficiency, we’re focusing on returning to a more optimal ratio of engineers to other roles. It’s important for all groups to get leaner and more efficient to enable our technology groups to get as lean and efficient as possible,” he recently said.

On the podcast, Zuckerberg also discussed his decision to remove thousands of employees.

“Layoffs are uniquely challenging and tough in that you have a lot of people leaving for reasons that are not connected to their own performance. Really, it is just a strategy decision and sometimes financially required, but not fully in our case,” he said.

Zuckerberg said that “I decided we needed to get to a point where we are a lot leaner.”

To this, Musk replied, “Guys, I think I maybe took too much.”

Several users expressed their thoughts on Musk’s post.

A woman will head Twitter: Musk

Earlier on Thursday, Musk said he had selected a chief executive for Twitter but did not disclose her identity….reports Asian Lite News

Elon Musk is in talks to hire Linda Yaccarino, the chair of global advertising and partnerships at NBCUniversal as the chief executive of Twitter, The New York Times reported.

According to the NYT, the people who spoke on condition of anonymity said the talks are now at an advanced stage. They said Yaccarino has been in discussion with Musk for weeks.

Last month, Yaccarino interviewed Musk onstage at an advertising event in Miami.
Earlier on Thursday, Musk said he had selected a chief executive for Twitter but did not disclose her identity.

In a tweet, he wrote, “She will be starting in ~6 weeks!” He added that he would remain involved as executive chair and “CTO,” which typically denotes chief technology officer and that he would still oversee Twitter’s product and software.

According to The New York Times, Musk and Yaccarino did not respond to requests for comment.

The Wall Street Journal earlier reported that Yaccarino was in talks with Musk.

Musk who bought Twitter for USD 44 billion last year will continue to retain a firm grip on the company even if he names a chief executive.

As Twitter’s owner, he has put his stamp on it by eliminating more than 75 per cent of its 7,500 employees, installing his own leaders and changing the service’s features and strategy. He also took Twitter private, which means he does not have to disclose corporate information to the public.

The outgoing CEO recently announced adding another update to Twitter allowing its verified users to have early access to encrypted messaging service.

The update is currently available only for verified users.

Earlier on May 11, Musk shared a tweet updating about the early version of the encrypted messaging being launched. “Early version of encrypted direct messages just launched. Try it, but don’t trust it yet,” his tweet read. (ANI)

Musk settles defamation suit with Indian-American Sikh

Randeep Hothi had filed a defamation case against Musk in 2020, alleging that the billionaire businessman falsely accused him of actively harassing and “almost killing” Tesla employees.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has agreed to pay $10,000 to settle a defamation case brought against him by Indian-American Sikh critic and independent researcher, Randeep Hothi.

Hothi, a doctoral student in Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Michigan, had filed a defamation case against Musk in 2020, alleging that the billionaire businessman falsely accused him of actively harassing and “almost killing” Tesla employees.

Following a lengthy and hard-fought litigation, in March 2023, Musk asked Hothi to settle the case.

“This case was about taking a stand, not seeking fame or money. I feel vindicated,” said Hothi, announcing that he accepted Musk’s settlement offer in a statement.

“I brought this case to defend my work, clear my name, and send a message… I believe I’ve accomplished that, thanks in no small part to Musk, whose own behaviour over the last year has highlighted the need to scrutinise his every word and deed.”

D. Gill Sperlein, one of Hothi’s lawyers, said: “Last year, Musk famously promised that he would never ‘settle an unjust case’. Yet, he has asked Hothi to accommodate him. We welcome Musk’s belated acknowledgment that this case was just.”

Hothi locked horns with Tesla after he created the @skabooshka Twitter account where he fact-checked Musk and his company’s published claims regarding the electric vehicle manufacturer’s automation, technology and production processes.

Beginning in 2018, Hothi, donning the role of a social activist, observed Tesla’s production at its Fremont, California-based factory.

He also documented the construction of Tesla’s Model 3 assembly line tent, sharing photos of his Twitter followers.

In April 2019, Tesla sought a restraining order against Hothi, alleging that the latter struck an employee with his car in a Tesla factory parking lot — an accusation that Hothi vehemently denied.

When Hothi and his legal team successfully obtained a court order requiring Tesla to hand over video evidence of the alleged encounter, Tesla abruptly dropped its lawsuit in July 2019.

Yet the following month, Musk e-mailed a reporter accusing Hothi of “actively harassing” and “almost kill(ing)” Tesla employees.

That remark was later published and amplified to hundreds of thousands of people on Twitter.

Musk’s accusations prompted an outpouring of public support for Hothi, including from whistleblowers, researchers, journalists, and critics.

In August 2020, represented by Sperlein, Hothi filed a defamation lawsuit against Musk based on his remarks.

Musk attempted to dispose of the case by arguing that his accusations were protected speech, and hence should be dismissed under California’s anti-SLAPP law.

In January 2021, the trial court rejected Musk’s arguments, holding that Hothi “has demonstrated the probability that he can succeed on the merits of his claim” because Musk’s remarks were tantamount to an accusation of crime, and thus legally constituted defamation per se.

Hothi accepted Musk’s settlement offer on April 30, and is expected to request dismissal of the case on May 1, pursuant to the terms of the settlement agreement.

Musk’s ‘TruthGPT’ to rival ChatGPT

The revelation comes as the billionaire has created a new company called X.AI which will promote artificial intelligence (AI) in the ChatGPT era….reports Asian Lite News

After slamming OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Elon Musk is now working on “TruthGPT,” a ChatGPT alternative that will act as a “maximum truth-seeking AI.”

In an interview with Fox News, Musk said that an alternative approach to AI creation is needed to “avoid the destruction of humanity”.

“I’m going to start something which I call ‘TruthGPT’ or a maximum truth-seeking AI that tries to understand the nature of the universe,” Musk was quoted as saying.

“And I think this might be the best path to safety in the sense that an AI that cares about understanding the universe is unlikely to annihilate humans because we are an interesting part of the universe,” the Twitter CEO added.

ChatGPT

In February, Musk for the first time tweeted that what we need is a “TruthGPT.”

The revelation comes as the billionaire has created a new company called X.AI which will promote artificial intelligence (AI) in the ChatGPT era.

Incorporated in Nevada, Texas, the company has Musk as the only listed director, and Jared Birchall, director of Musk’s family office, as secretary, according to a filing.

Musk aims to create an AI firm to take on Microsoft-backed OpenAI.

In recent months, ChatGPT and GPT-4 have become a rage worldwide.

In March, several top entrepreneurs and AI researchers, including Musk and Steve Wozniak, Co-founder of Apple, wrote an open letter, asking all AI labs to immediately pause training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4 for at least six months.

Musk becomes most-followed person on Twitter

The billionaire who bought Twitter for $44 billion last year now has 133,068,709 followers, compared to Obama’s 133,042,819…reports Asian Lite News

The Twitter acquisition has helped its CEO Elon Musk become the world’s most followed person on the platform, as the Chief Twit on Thursday dethroned former US President Barack Obama as the most followed person on Twitter.

The billionaire who bought Twitter for $44 billion last year now has 133,068,709 followers, compared to Obama’s 133,042,819, according to the follower counts.

Top celebrities like Justin Bieber with over 113 million Twitter followers and Katy Perry with over 108 million followers are at the third and fourth most-followed spots, respectively.

Musk reached the 100 million followers-mark in June last year and since then, there has been a meteoric rise in his popularity.

While Obama hardly tweets, especially promoting a key social cause or highlighting his work as the US President, Musk keeps tweeting left, right and centre on nearly all the topics that trend in the world.

Twitter ‘inching closer’ to finalise $46.5 bn deal with Elon Musk

Musk in February said he was making his Twitter account private to see if it improves reach.

“Made my account private until tomorrow morning to test whether you can see my private tweets more than my public ones,” he posted.

This meant the only people able to see the billionaire’s tweets were his followers and no one was able to retweet Musk’s tweets either.

It came amid complaints from users that their tweets were not being seen by as many people as they used to.

Musk later removed the private setting from his account.

Musk’s Tesla fires workers over union efforts

Tesla and Musk have faced several complaints over their anti-union behaviour in the past years…reports Asian Lite News

Elon Musk-run Tesla has fired more than 30 employees from its New York Gigafactory, after they planned to unionise, according to a complaint filed with the US National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

The Workers’ United union alleged that Tesla fired over 30 employees from its Buffalo, New York plant and at least one of the workers was part of the 25-employee organising committee, while several others had taken part in labour discussions, reports The Verge.

The complaint alleged that the layoffs came “in retaliation for union activity and to discourage union activity.”

layoffs

“This is a form of collective retaliation against the group of workers that started this organizing effort” and is “designed to terrify everyone about potential consequences of them organizing”, Workers United organizer Jaz Brisack was quoted as saying in the report.

The Buffalo facility is known as Gigafactory 2 and “is home to over 800 analysts tasked with labelling vision data to train Tesla’s Autopilot software”.

Tesla and Musk have faced several complaints over their anti-union behaviour in the past years.

In January, Tesla was accused of violating labour laws in the US, allegedly directing employees not to talk about pay and working conditions.

In a complaint, the NLRB claimed that the electric car-maker “told employees not to complain to higher level managers about their pay or other conditions of employment” and said “not to discuss their pay with other persons”.

The company also allegedly told employees not to discuss the hiring, suspension, or termination of employees with others.

These incidents occurred from December 2021 to January 2022, the complaint alleged.

The NLRB in 2021 forced Musk to delete an anti-union tweet, and ruled that its firing of union activist Richard Ortiz was illegal.

Two US-based Tesla employees had also filed complaints with the NLRB over claims the company illegally fired them for criticising Musk.

Musk not guilty of fraud over Tesla tweet

The plaintiffs have argued that Elon Musk’s tweets about taking Tesla private, in which he said he had “funding secured”, led them to lose millions of dollars.

A court in the US has cleared Elon Musk in a class-action securities fraud over his tweets about taking Tesla private.

The jurors deliberated for about two hours before reaching the verdict, called a “disappointed” one by Nicholas Porritt, partner at Levi & Korsinsky, the firm representing the Tesla shareholders in the class action, reports CNBC.

Musk tweeted that he is “deeply appreciative of the jury’s unanimous finding”.

His lead counsel Alex Spiro argued before the jury on Friday, saying “fraud cannot be built on the back of a consideration”.

The controversial 2018 tweets by Musk on taking Tesla private has come back to haunt him and he stands to lose billions.

The plaintiffs have argued that Musk’s tweets about taking Tesla private, in which he said he had “funding secured”, led them to lose millions of dollars.

Musk had earlier admitted in a US court that he ignored his advisors and investors while tweeting about Tesla securing funding in 2018.

In August 2018, he had tweeted: “Am considering taking Tesla private at $420. Funding secured.”

“Shareholders could either sell at 420 or hold shares & go private,” he added.

The notorious tweet had cost him his role as Chairman of Tesla.

The August 2018 tweet resulted in Musk and Tesla reaching a settlement of fraud charges with the US SEC.

The settlement included $40 million in penalties, split equally between the company and Musk, and the removal of Musk as chairman of the Tesla board.

After Musk, Zuckerberg joins Apple bashing

Apple and Meta (formerly Facebook) are at the loggerheads over privacy changes in iOS and App Store…reports Asian Lite News

Amid the ongoing Elon Musk and Apple tussle, Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has once again slammed the iPhone maker for its App Store content moderation policies that present “a conflict of interest”.

Addressing the New York Times DealBook conference, Zuckerberg said that “it is problematic for one company to be able to control what app experiences end up on a device”.

He said that the “vast majority of profits in the mobile ecosystem go toward Apple”.

Tim Cook(twitter)

On Musk being the new Twitter owner, the Meta CEO said “it’ll be very interesting to see how this plays out”.

After his meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook, Musk on Thursday said that they have “resolved” misunderstandings over the micro-blogging platform possibly being removed from the App Store.

Apple and Meta (formerly Facebook) are at the loggerheads over privacy changes in iOS and App Store.

Facebook is struggling to patch its ad-tracking systems after Apple brought tough privacy changes in its App Store.

Apple introduced the “Ask App not to Track” prompt as part of iOS 14.5 in 2021 which has had a significant impact on various companies, including Meta which said that Apple iOS privacy changes will cost it a whopping $10 billion in 2022.

Apple’s iOS 14.5 update, released in April 2021, came with an App Tracking Transparency (ATT) feature that has affected digital advertising for tech giants.

According to the WSJ report, Apple’s privacy move resulted in a “sharp business slump that has shaved approximately $600 billion from the company’s (Meta’s) market value in less than a year”.

A Meta spokesman said that the company has “made significant changes over the past five years to protect people’s data while also allowing businesses of all sizes to grow”.
