Eshwarappa: The firebrand BJP face to a rebel leader

The senior BJP leader vowed to defeat the candidate of his own party from the Shivamogga Lok Sabha constituency in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, reports M.K. Ashoka

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader K.S. Eshwarappa is one of the frontline members of the party in Karnataka and has played a key role along with former chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa in making the BJP a force to reckon with in the state.

The 76-year-old leader is the face of OBCs and the Kuruba community. The man who is regarded as one of the key leaders who built the BJP from scratch in Karnataka is today at ‘crossroads’, having vowed to defeat the candidate of his own party from the Shivamogga Lok Sabha constituency in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, in a strange turn of events.

Eshwarappa has announced that he will file his nomination on Friday as an Independent candidate. He also asserted he would win the seat and “dedicate his victory on the feet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi”.

This decision has surprised everyone.

Initially, everyone assumed that Eshwarappa would mellow down after the party high command spoke to him. However, his resolve to contest against the BJP candidate has become a major concern. The senior BJP leader would be contesting from Shivamogga as an Independent candidate against BJP candidate B.Y. Raghavendra — the son of Yediyurappa.

Eshwarappa wanted a BJP ticket from the Haveri Lok Sabha constituency for his son, K.E. Kanthesh. However, the party fielded former Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai from the Haveri seat — a development that made Eshwarappa upset, with the ex-Deputy CM eventually deciding to contest against Yediyurappa’s son in the Shivamogga Lok Sabha constituency.

Eshwarappa expressed his outrage against Yediyurappa for not ensuring a ticket for his son Kanthesh for the Haveri LS seat.

Following the incidents of the brutal murder of Bajrang Dal activist Harsha in Shivamogga and the suicide of a contractor Santhosh Patil, Eshwarappa was denied the ticket to contest Assembly election from Shivamogga seat, which he represented for five terms.

When former CM Jagadish Shettar and ex-Deputy CM Laxman Savadi quit the BJP and joined the Congress last year ahead of the Karnataka Assembly polls following the denial of tickets to them, Eshwarappa remained calm and stated that he would abide by the party’s decision.

The “love-hate equation” between former Karnataka CM B.S. Yediyurappa and Eshwarappa is well known in Karnataka political circles.

Sources within the party submitted that Eshwarappa is in a “hyper-sensitive” phase of his political career. And a defeat in the upcoming election could push him to a corner in the state’s political arena.

Karnataka unit BJP president B.Y. Vijayendra has already stated that “if Eshwarappa is willing to end his political career in this manner then no one can help him”.

Eshwarappa, a seasoned campaigner, has also seen a series of setbacks in his political career. He was asked to announce his resignation from the Cabinet in connection with the case of the suicide of a contractor in April 2022. Eshwarappa was denied ticket to contest from Shivamogga Assembly seat which he represented traditionally. And much to his chagrin, the party allotted ticket to his close aide Channabasappa, and he got elected.

Eshwarappa, who did not speak a word then and kept toeing the party line has rebelled this time. He has vowed to challenge the supremacy of his ‘friend-turned-foe’, B.S. Yediyurappa, in the party.

“I can’t simply sit and watch one of his sons becoming Union Minister, another becoming BJP state unit president and getting ready for the CM post. The BJP is in the clutches of the Yediyurappa family and I will get the party out of his clutches,” Eshwarappa said.

Eshwarappa’s parents were daily wage earners. Motivated by his mother’s wish to see him ‘doing good in life’, he went on to become one of the prominent politicians of Karnataka.

Eshwarappa was born in Bellary district. His father Sharanappa and mother Basamma moved to Shivamogga in the early 1950s. His parents worked as daily wage earners. As a boy, Eshwarappa wanted to join his parents in the work. However, his mother did not allow him, and asked him to focus on education and “earn a good name in the society”.

His mother’s words motivated him to continue his studies, and more so, focus on social work. Later, he was introduced to RSS through Narasimha Murthy Iyengar, a VHP leader from Shivamogga.

Since then, Eshwarappa never turned back in his life.

From a student leader in ABVP, he became city unit president of the BJP in Shivamogga and went on to establish himself as a mass leader by defeating a heavyweight leader, then minister K.H. Srinivas, in the 1989 Karnataka Assembly elections.

To date, he lost only once in elections from Shivamogga Assembly segment. Eshwarappa became Deputy Chief Minister in the erstwhile Jagadish Shettar-led Cabinet in 2012. He served as the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister in the previous Basavaraj Bommai-led Cabinet.

He was also appointed state unit party president twice.

However, he was also known for controversial remarks throughout his political career.

Seen as a Hindutva leader, his remarks at times drew national attention.

BJP President J.P. Nadda had once advised him to “slow down” for his “hoisting saffron flag on the Red Fort” remark.

Eshwarappa turns down Shah’s call to withdraw candidature

Eshwarappa said his son has told him that even if he does not get a political future, “the party should be cleansed”…reports Asian Lite News

Former Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader KS Eshwarappa, who has decided to contest the Lok Sabha election from Shivamogga constituency as an independent, said on Tuesday that he had received a call from Union Home Minister Amit Shah to meet him in Delhi on Wednesday.

Eshwarappa said that he would meet the Union Minister tomorrow but will not change his decision to contest the election unless the state BJP president BY Vijayendra, son of former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, is replaced before the polls.

“I responded positively to Amit Shah’s call and have discussed this in the circle of my close friends. I will go to Delhi. But there is no change in my stance. I have decided to contest as a non-party candidate. I have made it clear that I will not contest the election only if state party president (BY Vijayendra) is replaced,” Eshwarappa told reporters here.

Yediyurappa’s son, BY Raghavendra, is the incumbent MP and BJP nominee from Shivamogga for the Lok Sabha election.

Eshwarappa said his fight is against the control of the BJP in the state “by one family”.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi used to say that Congress has a family culture. Similarly, the BJP is in the hands of one family in the state. The party should be freed from that family. Party workers are hurt. I will compete and contest to relieve the pain of workers,” he said.

He said the work of those who fought for Hindutva ideology and for the organization should be respected.

“I’m contesting to fix the mess. I will not step back from the decision, I will pay my respects to you and come to Delhi,” the BJP leader said.

Eshwarappa said his son has told him that even if he does not get a political future, “the party should be cleansed”.

Voting for Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka will be held in two phases on April 26 and May 7 for 28 constituencies. Shivamogga will go to the polls on May 7. (ANI)

Eshwarappa Snubs PM’s Rally Amid Ticket Dispute

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to arrive in Shivamogga city, the home district of former Chief Minister and BJP Central Election Committee member, BS Yediyurappa…reports Asian Lite News

Senior BJP leader K S Eshwarappa, embroiled in a dispute over the denial of a ticket to his son for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Haveri, chose to skip Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally in an apparent snub to the party. The 75-year-old former Deputy Chief Minister, who declined the invitation to attend the event, was observed visiting religious institutions associated with various communities instead.

Eshwarappa, adamant in his decision, has declared his intention to contest independently from Shimoga (Shivamogga) in the forthcoming polls. He squarely blames veteran BJP leader B S Yediyurappa and his son, B Y Vijayendra, the state BJP President, for the refusal of a ticket to his son, K E Kantesh.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to arrive in Shivamogga city, the home district of former Chief Minister and BJP Central Election Committee member, BS Yediyurappa. His planned rally, expected to draw a crowd of approximately 2.5 lakh people, aims to bolster support for the NDA ahead of the elections.

PM Modi, announcing his itinerary on social media, expressed enthusiasm for the fervor evident in Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu in favor of the NDA. Scheduled to arrive in Shivamogga by 1:30 p.m., he will lead a roadshow before addressing the assembled gathering at the Allama Prabhu ground. Party workers and constituents from Shivamogga, Davanagere, Chitradurga, and Udupi-Chikmagalur constituencies are expected to attend the rally.

Congress demands Eshwarappa’s arrest

Opposition leader Siddaramaiah demanded that it is a ‘heinous crime’ and non-bailable offence…reports Asian Lite News

Hours after Eshwarappa announced to tender his resignation, the state Congress said on Thursday that resignation is not sufficient, and the BJP leader must be arrested immediately in connection with the suicide case of a civil contractor who held Eshwarappa directly responsible for his death.

The move came after the police had filed an abetment to suicide case against Eshwarappa, the Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, after Belagavi-based civil contractor, Santhosh Patil, was found dead at a lodge on Tuesday. Patil, who had blamed Eshwarappa squarely for his death, had earlier accused the senior minister of demanding a 40 per cent cut for clearing bills for various works that he had taken up.

Speaking to reporters, state Congress President D.K. Shivakumar said that Eshwarappa will not keep his words.

“Our struggle won’t stop with his resignation. The FIR speaks many facts relating to corruption. He must be booked under Section 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and he must be arrested immediately,” Shivakumar said.

Opposition leader Siddaramaiah demanded that it is a ‘heinous crime’ and non-bailable offence.

“In all heinous crimes, the accused persons are arrested immediately. But Eshwarappa has not been arrested yet. All are equal before the law,” Siddaramaiah said.

“By deciding to submit his resignation, Eshwarappa has realised his mistakes. First he claimed he did not know Santhosh at all. Did he lodge a defamation case against him without knowing Santhosh at all,” Siddaramaiah asked.

Congress General Secretary and in-charge for Karnataka, Randeep Singh Surjewala, tweeted: “Minister Eshwarappa’s belated resignation is too little, too late. Eshwarappa has to be arrested. Section 13 of Prevention of Corruption Act must be added to the FIR. High Court monitored SIT must investigate & file challan. Independent probe of 40% Commission Bommai Govt!”

Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that Eshwarappa has tendered resignation on his own.

He also denied any direction from the BJP high command in this regard.

“Eshwarappa spoke to me this evening. He told me that he is innocent and did not do anything. He also expressed confidence that he would come out clean in the investigation. He said he will meet me tomorrow (Friday) and also stated that he will not stay in his post as it might embarrass the party,” Bommai said.
