Union Labour and Employment Minister Bhupender Yadav on Thursday said India’s presidency of G20 has strived to strengthen the legacy of the group’s Employment Working Group (EWG).

Addressing the two-day Labour and Employment Ministers’ (LEM) meeting here, he hailed the G20 EWG for effectively collaborating and working towards finalising the outcome documents.

Recognising employers’ associations and workers’ unions as key facilitators for effective policy making, Yadav appreciated the presence of Labour20 (L20), Business20 (B20), and International Organization of Employers (IOE) in the LEM meeting.

In a joint statement, the L20 and B20 called for cooperative industrial relations based on trust and supported by tripartite cooperation, dispute settlement, collective bargaining and involvement of social partners in policy development discussions.

It also underscored the proactive role of policy makers in monitoring global trends on employment creation, fluctuation in commodity prices and any future economic disorder or crisis.

Roberto Suarez Santos, Secretary General of IOE addressed the session, which was followed by a programme showcasing traditional performing arts of Madhya Pradesh.

Second G20 EWG meeting to begin in Guwahati

The Second Employment Working Group (EWG) Meeting under India’s G20 Presidency started in Guwahati on Monday.

The three-day event which will continue till April 5 has seen a gathering of over 19 G20 member countries, seven guest countries and five International Organisations. The inaugural session of the Second Employment Working Group (EWG) meeting under the aegis of India’s G20 presidency was held in Guwahati today.

Union MoS for Labour and Employment Rameswar Teli, Assam Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, and delegates of G20 were present in the inaugural session of the 2nd Employment Working Group (EWG) meeting.

The delegates will deliberate on labour, employment and social issues for strong, sustainable, balanced, and job-rich growth for all.

Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoLE), Government of India is the nodal ministry for the Employment Working Group under the Indian presidency of G20.

The G20 EWG’s second meeting is a crucial step towards building consensus on the outcomes of the three key priority areas for EWG 2023 under the Indian Presidency.

The three areas include Addressing Global Skill Gaps, Gig and Platform Economy, and Social Protection, Sustainable Financing of Social Protection.

The first day of the meeting comprised sessions focused on different priority areas such as by the Education Working Group, Digital Economy Working Group, Finance Track, G20 Entrepreneurship Research Centre, and the L20 and B20 Chairs.

During the 2nd EWG, a discussion will take place on Ministerial Communique and the outcome documents to arrive at a consensus.

The communique is key to defining the future direction of the global economy through its eventual implementation in the G20 nations.

The three-day meeting of G20 EWG will also comprise events showcasing the cultural heritage of Assam. (ANI)

BRICS nations discuss social security pact

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Labour and Employment on Thursday, representatives of International Labour Organization (ILO) and International Social Security Agency (ISSA) expressed willingness to provide technical support in facilitating conclusion of a Social Security Agreement (SSA)…reports Asian Lite News Desk.

BRICS member nations have resolved to enter into dialogue and discussion with each other to finalize a Social Security Agreement for the labour sector.

Participating in the 1st BRICS Employment Working Group (EWG) held earlier this week, the members – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – also discussed formalization of labour markets and participation of women in the labour force.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Labour and Employment on Thursday, representatives of International Labour Organization (ILO) and International Social Security Agency (ISSA)
expressed willingness to provide technical support in facilitating conclusion of a Social Security Agreement (SSA).

Member Nations also converged on devising multilateral framework for the same on a later stage.

“Social Security Agreement would help the international workers to port their benefit to their home countries thereby preventing loss of their hard earned money. Further, they will be exempted from contributing both in home as well as host countries,” the official release said.

At the same time, the member countries resolved to promote participation of women in remunerative, productive and decent work and to extend social security cover to the women workers engaged in informal sector.

The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the participation of women in labour force was also discussed.

Focusing on the formalization of the labour market, member nations discussed various initiatives taken by them towards formalization of jobs and how Covid-19 has enhanced informalization risk.

The two-day meeting, held in a virtual format on Tuesday and Wednesday, also discussed the role of gig and platform workers in the labour market.

The member nations noted how the proliferation of Digital Labour Platforms was transforming the labour processes in the world of work.

“Challenges faced by them and various measures being taken by member nations including extension of social protection system were also discussed,” the ministry release said.

Apart from representatives of member nations Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, the representatives of International Labour Organization (ILO) and International Social Security Agency (ISSA) also made valuable interventions and suggestions on the agenda issues. (INN)
