Bald and bold Fahadh’s intriguing look in ‘Pushpa: The Rule’ revealed

Malayalam star Fahadh Faasil is celebrating his birthday on Tuesday, and on the occasion, the makers of his upcoming highly anticipated film ‘Pushpa: The Rule’ dropped his look from the film, sending his fans in frenzy.

In the first part of the film, ‘Pushpa: The Rise’, which was released in December 2021 and became a massive blockbuster, Fahadh essayed the role of Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat, a cop who is set to have a major showdown with the titular character of Pushpa – Pushparaj in the second part of the film.

The poster features the actor in a bald look smoking a cigarette with swag as he dons a leather jacket rounded up with a pair of sunglasses and ear piercing. The poster has a monotone colour fill of blood red shade.

The makers further jotted down the caption while wishing Fahadh Faasil, “Team #Pushpa2TheRule wishes the Massively talented #FahadhFaasil a very Happy Birthday Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat Sir will be back on the big screens with vengeance (sic)”.

Fahadh left an indelible mark on the audience with his performance of the antagonist in ‘Pushpa: The Rise’, and now with its sequel, the stage is set for an epic clash between Pushpa and Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat.

‘Pushpa: The Rise’ is known to have taken the box-office by storm during the third wave of the pandemic in India when the theatres were majorly shut across the Indian cities to curb the spread of the contagion.

The film still managed to beat the likes of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and the Ranveer Singh-starrer ‘83’ and emerged as a winner on the box-office.

‘Pushpa: The Rule’ will see Sukumar reprising his role as the director and also stars Allu Arjun and Rashmika Mandanna.

Produced by Mythri Movie Makers and Muttamsetty Media, the film is set for its release on December 22, 2023.

‘Malik’ has all elements to entertain

I give it to my writer and directors who walk me through the part,” added Fahadh, who will again be directed by Mahesh Narayanan in “Malik” after “C U Soon”…Fahad speaks with Yashika Mathur.

Fahad is becoming an established and promising actor for the industry. After the success of his Malayalam film “Joji”, actor Fahadh Faasil is ready to bring another intense story to the audience with “Malik”. But the actor knows how to shake off the intensity and grimness of his characters, once pack-up happens.

“Rarely I think about work at home. Days when I think of work at home, such characters keep you awake and thinking all the time. It shouldn’t happen because an actor should be just responsible about performing in front of the camera and not behind the camera,” Fahadh told.

He added: “Some sequences have had an impact but no such incident worth sharing.”

Fahadh says the narrative of a film, and not an individual character, matters to him.

“I never pick a character, I pick a narrative. I never function looking at a character. I need to be excited by the narrative. It doesn’t matter how big or long or what the character is. For me, the connect I strike is narration of the story to the audience, and how my character is pitched to the audience,” said the actor.

“If you look at my films, mostly all of them are author-backed. I just need to be there with solid presence of mind. I give it to my writer and directors who walk me through the part,” added Fahadh, who will again be directed by Mahesh Narayanan in “Malik” after “C U Soon”.

Talking about “Malik”, Fahadh says that the film has all elements to entertain.

“The film talks about the 30 years of stories of the community. It’s a packed narrative for entertainment. There is politics, there is love, there is revenge and everything. We have not made any one thing loud. There is a bit of everything,” he says about his upcoming film, which will stream on Amazon Prime Video on July 15.

The actor, whose work in films such as “Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum”, “Bangalore Days”, and “Kumbalangi Nights” among others has been appreciated, says he is always thinking about how to make his work be better…writes Yashika Mathur.

Fahad Fazil is one of the renowned and talented young actors of Malayalam film industry.Malayalam actor Fahadh Faasil’s new film “Joji” is being appreciated since it dropped recently on a digital platform. The National Award-winning actor says he is never worried about the reactions his films might receive.

“I am not worried about my films working or not. When it doesn’t work it hurts, but for me it’s the process which is exciting, to identify a film and work on it. You like an idea, you go to the shoot and then you improvise and finish shooting, and your fight is whether you have done justice to what you initially conceived. It is a constant fight,” Fahadh tells.

The actor, whose work in films such as “Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum”, “Bangalore Days”, and “Kumbalangi Nights” among others has been appreciated, says he is always thinking about how to make his work be better.

“Even when your film works, you think that there are so many things you could have done and there are so many things that you missed out on. This process is never complete, and I am in love with the process which you are exploring. You are dealing with human emotions, you are trying to understad people better. I like love this aspect of my job and I want to do this as long as I can,” he says.

So what are the qualities he looks for in a script? “I want it to be as real as looking out of the window. I need that connect and need to believe that it happened somewhere, and to approach it honestly. What I have constantly tried to do is to do real stuff,” says the actor, whose film “Joji” released on Amazon Prime Video.

Pothan’s Joji, a replica of Macbeth

Faasil’s Joji is clearly the weakest in every way among the three sons of a rich plantation owner, Kuttappan (Sunny PN). Screenwriter Syam Pushkaran draws up Joji, youngest of the brothers, as a loser…writes VINAYAK CHAKRAVORTY

Joji (film on Amazon Prime); Cast: Fahadh Faasil, Baburaj, Unnimaya Prasad, Joji Mundakayam, Sunny PN, Alister Alex; Direction: Dileesh Pothan; Rating: * * * and 1/2 (three and a half stars)

Just when you’d think another fresh take on William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” couldn’t possibly be done, comes “Joji”. Fahadh Faasil’s new collaboration with director Dileesh Pothan retains the basic outline of human avarice and slant at violence, but sheds Shakespearean grandeur of the story in favour of restraint as it builds up the crime drama.

“Macbeth” and its innumerable retellings (including Vishal Bhardwaj’s magnificent “Maqbool”) have traditionally banked on a singular tragic flaw while spelling doom for the towering Shakespearean antihero — his ambition. Pothan’s film underplays that bit, and gives the titular protagonist (played by Faasil) the persona of a weakling, ridden by inferiority complex.

Faasil’s Joji is clearly the weakest in every way among the three sons of a rich plantation owner, Kuttappan (Sunny PN). Screenwriter Syam Pushkaran draws up Joji, youngest of the brothers, as a loser. He is an engineering dropout and while he dreams of being a wealthy NRI he has no clue how to go about it. Twist in the story comes when Kuttappan, on returning home after a stroke, clearly refuses to give Joji any inheritance whatsoever. Angered, Joji quietly changes his father’s medication, which leads to the latter’s death. As the narrative moves ahead, a paranoid Joji sets on a frantic bid to cover his tracks, only complicating his situation further.

Pothan and Pushkaran have tried interesting departures from what defines the “Macbeth” storyline. Among the most pertinent re-jigs is Lady Macbeth, imagined here as Bincy, played with cold precision by Unnimaya Prasad. Bincy, wife of the second son Jaison (Joji Mundakayam), is an accomplice of brother-in-law Joji more by chance than design. Her role is restricted to playing along, because she sees possible subsequent advantage that she could draw out of Joji’s nefarious plan of action.

Unlike “Macbeth” and almost all of its interpretations, the Lady Macbeth track here is restricted to greed. There is no sexual or marital subtext of any consequence in Bincy’s equation with Joji. The idea lets Pothan craft a narrative that stays singleminded in its focus on Joji’s mind games.

That sort of an approach is also the reason this film has done away with the symbolism that renders “Macbeth” much of its textual richness. Parallels to blood on the hands, supernatural apparitions, the Three Witches, or the Birnham Wood coming to Dunsinane are either negligibly touched upon or done away with, in sync with the frills-free cinematic treatment of “Joji”.

The biggest departure, of course, has to be Fahadh Faasil’s reorganised Macbeth. As the low-key Joji, he strikes an antithesis of the heartless killer the protagonist will eventually turn out to be, executing the role with impeccable restraint.

Faasil gets ample support from the prop cast. Baburaj as the eldest of the brothers, Jomon, an alcoholic divorcee and single father, is aptly cast, as is Joji Mundakayam as Jaison, the mild-mannered second brother.

“Joji” strikes subtly as it delivers impact, through Shyju Khalid’s impersonal cinematography that almost functions as a discreet onlooker in a household of disquiet, and through Justin Varghese’s soft background score that leaves a note of menace.

The film was shot in the Covid era, and Pothan has crafted an exquisite “Macbeth” in the time of wearing masks. The characters of “Joji” wear their masks not just literally but metaphorically, too.
