The upcoming film ‘Safed’, the poster of which was unveiled on Tuesday, celebrates an unconventional love between a widow and a eunuch. The film stars Meera Chopra of ‘Section 375’ fame, Abhay Verma, Barkha Bisht, Chhaya Kadam, and Jameel Khan and has been directed by Sandeep Singh, marking his debut as a director.

Talking about the film, Abhay Verma shared: “Amidst the luxuries that one can offer to others, we often forget the most precious gift given to us as humans – the ability to love, which should not know any limits or parameters. ‘Safed’ is nothing but a reminder that love is a language older than humanity.”

Director Sandeep Singh, who has produced films like ‘Ram Leela’, ‘Rowdy Rathore’, ‘Mary Kom’, ‘Aligarh’, ‘Sarbjit’, said, “Safed portrays the emotions of that section of society that we know exists but rarely acknowledge. I feel honoured to begin my debut as a director with a story of a world that most of us know little about. Also, it being Valentine’s Day today, love calls for a celebration, throwing light on a path that may be dark. ‘Safed’ is now ready and I am geared up for its release.”

He added: “The film has been shot in the world’s oldest city Varanasi. The entire shoot was completed in just 11 days with the minimal crew members.”

SRK’s mass comeback in espionage thriller ‘Pathaan’

Pathaan (Shah Rukh) is an exiled RAW field operative who is assigned to take down his old nemesis, Jim (John Abraham), a former RAW agent turned rogue…reviewed by Arnab Banerjee

‘Pathaan’ (playing in theatres); Duration: 146 minutes; Director: Siddharth Anand; Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, John Abraham and Dimple Kapadia. (Rating: 3.5)

Finally, the much-awaited Shah Rukh Khan-starrer ‘Pathaan’ hit the theatres on Wednesday. And, expectedly all the pre-release exhilaration translates into high energy rush as the film presents the story of an Indian spy, who takes on the leader of a group of mercenaries who has nefarious plans to target his homeland, captivating the audience.

That the lead actor is the ‘Badshah’ of Bollywood gives the fans all the more reason to scream, dance and sing in the cinema halls. Serpentine queues for a 6 a.m. show is a rarity in India, at least for a Hindi film.

In short, the film is an espionage thriller that is most likely to lead box office collections.

Pathaan (Shah Rukh) is an exiled RAW field operative who is assigned to take down his old nemesis, Jim (John Abraham), a former RAW agent turned rogue.

Jim leads ‘Outfit X’, a private terrorist organisation, which is planning to spread a deadly virus dubbed ‘Raktbeej’ across India. The virus, if unleashed, could be much deadlier than any other virus winessed by the mankind.

Right from the opening scene, the unusually fast-paced plot moves with RAW agents, spies, terrorists and a Pakistani Army officer scheming and plotting in different parts of the world.

Rattled by the revocation of Article 370, which granted special status to the eratwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, by the Indian government, Pakistan has all the evil intentions and the wherewithal to infiltrate and annihilate the Indian territory. For this purpose, Jim, who has a past and had been double-crossed by Indians earlier, is hired.

And here comes yet another ex-ISI agent, Rubina Khan (Deepika Padukone), leaving many guessing as to who teams with whom.

Pathaan, a diehard patriot who had retired, is called back by his boss Nandini (Dimple Kapadia). Meanwhile, their supreme boss, Colonel Sunil Luthra (Ashutosh Rana), is left worried, still trying to figure out what move to adopt to save human lives with threat of destruction looming large.

With gun-toting agents spreading destruction all around, a svelte and sexy Rubina is seen displaying her charm in a bikini that had riled up the saffron outfits until a few weeks ago when the song ‘Besharam Rang’ was released on internet.

Of course, she is aware of the past and present danger and knows precisely whom to side with as more and more evil-intentioned men appear on the scene.

Amid such chaos, if there’s one ray of hope it’s obviously the presence of the most sought-after, most-loved, and fearless Pathaan. With James Bond-like intensity, Pathaan has supreme fight sequences to match.

Crammed with high octane action that is virtually frenziedly uninterrupted and relentless, there’s not a single moment that would make the viewers take a breather.

Shah Rukh, who needs a box office blockbuster badly, is perhaps the only actor who could have looked lethal with his six -packs and delivering lines in hushed tones that melts Padukone. His charm remains intact as he tries to briefly romance, while all along diving and jumping from mountains and rooftops in a bid to oust his enemies.

And it isn’t just his young looks, his energy is so infectious that many among the cinegoers whistled every time he scored a point over his opponent. Such is his impact and following!

Padukone too proves why she was the one chosen by Hollywood to don colourful bodysuits, leggings and catsuits. John Abraham too is a perfect foil to Khan’s ripping muscles and performs well. To match Khan’s young looks, he too manages to sport a dashing fresh youthful look.

The action scenes are at par with any Hollywood production, while the cinematography by Satchith Paulose captures some exquisite landscapes in Spain, Russia, Dubai, Italy and France.

Though there is not much scope for songs in such a narrative, Vishal-Shekhar numbers are extremely catchy.

All those who are still worried about Bollywood’s no show for months, can decisively breathe easy with the satisfaction that given the right production, engaging script and mega stars at the helm, Hindi cinema should be back on track!

‘Selfiee’ poster sparks remake debate yet again

Akshay took to his Instagram to share the motion poster on his feed which shows him standing face-to-face with Emraan’s character of a cop in the film….reports Asian Lite News

The motion poster of the Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi-starrer upcoming film ‘Selfiee’ was unveiled on Sunday.

Akshay took to his Instagram to share the motion poster on his feed which shows him standing face-to-face with Emraan’s character of a cop in the film.

The superstar captioned the video: “Fans make a star. Fans can also break a star! Find out what happens when a fan turns against his Idol. Watch #Selfiee in cinemas on Feb 24th.”

Karan Johar mentioned in his caption: “Superstar aur Superfan ki aisi kahaani, aap ne suni naa hogi kahin! Dekhiye #Selfiee in cinemas on Feb 24th (An unheard tale of a superstar and a superfan).”

‘Selfiee’ is a remake of the 2019 Malayalam comedy-drama ‘Driving Licence’. The original Malayalam movie was directed by Lal Jr from a script by Sachy.

It revolved around a superstar (Prithviraj Sukumaran) famous for his driving skills who loses his licence. The matter spins out of control after he locks horns with a motor inspector (Suraj Venjaramoodu), who happens to be a fan of the actor.

As soon as the makers posted the video on social media, a section of the audience outright bashed them.

One social media user wrote: “Suni bhi and dekh li … remake hai (have heard it and seen it, duh, it’s a remake).”

Another wrote: “Another successful remake from Malayalam movie … only way Akshay Kumar can survive in Bollywood is either make patriotism movie or copy from South Indian movie.”

Some also compared it to Shah Rukh Khan’s 2016 film ‘Fan’, One user wrote: “Fan movie of SRK ka copy lag raha hai (looks like a copy of SRK’s ‘Fan’).”

‘My priorities made sense to no one but me’

Sen, who is the Child Protection Ambassador at ‘Save the Children India’ says her emphasis is on every aspect of the fight to end child trafficking, child labour and child marriage…writes Sukant Deepak

She remembers her time in the Indian film industry as fun and unique. Someone who has worked in over 20 films in different languages across the world and shot with directors like Ketan Mehta, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Goutam Ghose here, actor, writer and child-rights activist Nandana Sen decided early in her film career (“quite stubbornly, in fact”) that she wanted to work in the industry in a certain way, though it was not necessarily the way the latter was used to working.

“My priorities made sense to no one but me; well-wishers in the film world often remarked that they did not understand why I accepted certain films and turned down others. But the industry was extremely generous to me, giving me lots of work and allowing me to indulge in my many eccentricities, including disappearing for months to do obscure independent films around the world,” remembers Sen, who was seen in films like ‘Black’, ‘Rang Rasiya’ and ‘My Wife’s Murder’ among others.

This Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute and Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) trained actor smiles when asked if being the daughter of Nobel Laureate economist Amartya Sen and Padma Shri awardee writer and academic Nabaneeta Dev Sen was ‘pressuring’… “No, and I have to thank my parents entirely for that. Somehow they always had immense confidence in me, and never batted an eyelid when I changed my life around, time and again or chose a profession unfamiliar to them both — like cinema. Being academics, I think they were reassured by the fact that I was always a good student!”

Admitting that being raised by two women poets — her mother and grandmother Radharani Debi, shaped her outlook most fundamentally, besides ‘Bhalo-Basa’, a heritage house she grew up in, she adds, “Growing up there shaped me as much as studying at Harvard, or living around the world, did. Ever since the 1930s, that house has always been filled with books, adda, and artists. Ma and Dimma were fearless public voices too, and their values and priorities had a huge impact on the choices I made, as an artist as well as an activist.”

For someone who believes in the transformative power of the creative arts — for instance, the films she selected had social-political consciousness at heart, whether exploring religious fundamentalism (‘The War Within’, USA), disability rights (‘Black’, India), lesbian love during apartheid (‘The World Unseen’, UK and South Africa), or censorship and freedom of expression (‘Gudia’ and ‘Rang Rasiya’, India), she adds, “Also, all my books for kids have girl heroes, often with single mothers, and celebrate the diversity and uniqueness of identities.”

Sen, who is the Child Protection Ambassador at ‘Save the Children India’ says her emphasis is on every aspect of the fight to end child trafficking, child labour and child marriage.

“We have done several great campaigns together. We have also publicly addressed youth leaders about transformative engagement and campaigned extensively for girls’ safety and education. Our collaboration has been very rewarding,” says Sen, who studied literature at Harvard University.

Currently working on her next book in the Mambi series; a film script set in the intersection of cinema, journalism and politics in India; and a multi-generational book titled ‘Mother Tongues,’ she asserts she will always love cinema as a medium, as an actor and a screenwriter.

“You will see me back on a film set once my feisty seven-year-old, is a little older, though I will never stop writing books. I am loving every moment I spend with my family, and with my writing.”

‘Iravin Nizhal’ : A technical masterpiece

A single shot film means the film does not have an editor. It means the film crew has shot all the scenes of the film at one go in a single show… Reviewed by MANIGANDAN K.R.

Duration: 96 minutes (Releasing in Theatres), Director: Parthiban. Cast: Parthiban, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Robo Shankar, Brigida Saga, Chandru, Anandha Krishanan, Sneha Kumar and Sai Priyanka.
Music: A. R. Rahman (Rating: ****)

Director and actor Parthiban has always looked to push boundaries. The man, who won a National Award for his very first film, the hard hitting ‘Pudhiya Paadhai’ in 1989, has never stopped thinking about how to take Tamil cinema to greater heights.

Just when people began to write him off, Parthiban shot back to limelight with his ‘Oththa Seruppu – Size 7’, a film that had only him as an actor in it. What was impressive about the film was that not only did it do well commercially, it fetched him a National Award yet again.

Ilaiyaraaja, who scored the music for ‘Oththa Seruppu – Size 7’, is believed to have asked Parthiban, “What more can you do now? You have surpassed all limits. What next?” ‘Iravin Nizhal’ is Parthiban’s reply to Ilaiyaraaja’s question.

A single-shot, non-linear film, ‘Iravin Nizhal’ is a technical masterpiece, the making of which leaves one awe-inspired.

A single shot film means the film does not have an editor. It means the film crew has shot all the scenes of the film at one go — in a single shot!

This means the sets for each of the scenes of the 96 minute-long film must have been ready simultaneously. It also means actors featuring in one scene will have less than 20 seconds to change their costumes and rush to the set of the next scene where they will have to deliver all their lines by heart.

One small mistake from any one member of either the cast or the crew in any department would mean the entire film having to be reshot from the beginning! The challenge is compounded by the fact that the film has a non-linear pattern of storytelling. What this means is that story’s time period keeps shuffling back and forth.

Parthiban’s move to screen a making video of the film before screening the actual film is thoughtful. For, it shows the enormity of the challenge that lay before the cast and the crew and the brilliant and professional manner in which the entire unit of over 340 people overcame it.

In other words, it makes one appreciate the phenomenal effort that has gone into the making of this film, which is definitely one of a kind.

The making video shows that the unit worked tirelessly for several months to first find a place that could accommodate so many sets. Then, finally, they zeroed in on a 64-acre piece of land on which a whopping 58 sets were brilliantly erected.

After this, the entire cast had to undergo several rounds of rehearsals before the actual shooting began. The making video shows that the unit failed 23 times and that the film had to be shot from scratch each time!

Moving on to the plot of ‘Iravin Nizhal’, Parthiban narrates a grim story about an individual’s life in this challenging film. The story is about a person called Nandhu(played by Parthiban) who is on the run from the cops.

As he longs for his daughter to come back to him, he takes a walk down memory lane. ‘Iravin Nizhal’ showcases the different points in the life of Nandhu, a man trying to survive this cruel world, from the time he was a boy till the time he is on the run. Why is Nandhu on the run? Why has his daughter separated from him? ‘Iravin Nizhal’ gives you the answers.

The film has fantastic performances coming in from all its actors, especially Parthiban. Varalakshmi as Premakumari, the mistress of a fake godman, in particular is impressive in the brief period that she appears.

The performances of Brigida Saga as Chilakkama and Sai Priyanka Ruth as Parvathi also stand out. Chandru, who plays the role of Parthiban in his 18th year, and Anandha Krishnan, who plays Parthiban while he was 30 years old in the film, are fantastic.

On the technical front, A.R. Rahman’s music is just outstanding. Be it his background score, or his songs, the music lifts the film’s standard by a big margin. It is easily the film’s biggest strength.

Arthur Wilson’s camera work too is simply phenomenal. To think the man has shot all the scenes in one go leaves you astonished.

But beyond all their contributions, it is Parthiban’s contribution as a director that really makes the difference. The manner in which one scene transitions to another without the crew actually having to effect a cut is all due to the director’s brilliance.

First coming up with a story that can be shot in this way and then envisioning the entire process and then actually implementing it talks volumes of the understanding the man has of his craft.

Iravin Nizhal’s story might not be the most appealing or entertaining but it certainly is one of a kind and for that, it needs to be appreciated.

ASIAN LITE REVIEW: 1983 by Troy Ribeiro

The narrative- highlights and flashes the crucial matches and the moments in-between them, bringing back memories to the big screen after nearly 38 years…reports Troy Ribeiro

Film: ’83’ (Showing in theatres); Duration: 163 minutes.

Director: Kabir Khan. Cast: Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Pankaj Tripathi, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem, Neena Gupta, Boman Irani, Ammy Virk, Chirag Patil, Dinker Sharma, Nishant Dahiya, Harrdy Sandhu, Sahil Khattar, Adinath Kothare and Dhairya Karwa. (Rating: ****)

New Delhi, Dec 24 (IANS) Director Kabir Khan’s ‘83′ is a recreation of a momentous event – the Indian cricket team’s first-ever World Cup victory in 1983. Despite being predictable, the film offers an exhilarating and occasionally touching experience that has viewers leaving the auditorium caught up in an afterglow of excited patriotism.

The film mounted like a brilliantly restored or recreated documentary, captures the three and a half months of – ‘the may or may not win’ drama, where the actors and few of the actual players seamlessly weave in and out of the narrative.

The film focuses only on cricket and has everything that cricket fans could have possibly hoped for. The narrative- highlights and flashes the crucial matches and the moments in-between them, bringing back memories to the big screen after nearly 38 years.

As you are transported back in time, you witness how the ‘underdog’ Indian team was treated with disdain, and despite all odds, how they emerged as winners. It is invigorating to witness the matches once again and your mood swings like Kapil’s bat. You cheer for him when he creates history with a fabulous 175- not out against the Zimbabwe team, and your blood boils when you realise that the legendary game was not recorded on camera because BBC did not think it was important enough.

What you see on screen is Kapil’s charisma, the locker-room banter, the occasional tension and problematic behaviour between the teammates, the strategy they planned during the matches and above all, the anguish and thrills of the matches played during that unforgettable summer.

Casting is another aspect of the film that could not have been better either. Ranveer with his prosthetic dentures- oddly resembles Kapil Dev, but he slips into his shoes effortlessly delivering a brilliant performance that tugs at the heartstrings. While he emulates the captain of the team, Saqib Saleem plays Mohinder Amarnath, Tahir Raj Bhasin essays Sunil Gavaskar, Jatin Sarna is Yashpal Sharma, Jiiva is K. Srikkanth, Harrdy Sandhu is Madan Lal, Nishant Dahiya is Roger Binny, Ammy Virk plays Balwinder Sandhu, Addinath Kothare is Dilip Vengsakar, Dhairya Karwa is Ravi Shastri, Chirag Patil is Sandip Patil.

Boman Irani as the commentator Farrokh Engineer, Pankaj Tripathi as PR Man Singh, Neena Gupta as Kapil’s caring and supportive mother, and Deepika Padukone as Kapil’s wife Romi have their moments of on-screen glory.

The film is astutely mounted, with ace production values.

Overall, the narrative – like most of Kabir Khan’s films – is unabashedly manipulative, but this one delivers a cinema experience one won’t be able to forget about anytime soon.
