Madhur Bhandarkar: ‘My film is the mirror of society’

‘Chandni Bar’ featured Tabu, Atul Kulkarni, Rajpal Yadav, Ananya Khare and Upendra Limaye, among others, and it was made with a budget of around Rs 1.5 crore…reports Arundhuti Banerjee.

Back in 2001, on September 28, when the film ‘Chandni Bar’ hit the big screen, Madhur Bhandarkar, who was just two films old, could not imagine that this film would change his career. It went on to get four National Film Awards and eventually, Madhur found his signature style of realistic storytelling in the Hindi film industry.

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of ‘Chandni Bar’, in a conversation, Madhur recalled the journey of the film and now, 13 films and two National Awards later, what still motivates him to make a new film.

“It has been quite an interesting journey for me. I have seen struggle, success, stability. I have gained the respect of audiences and of the film fraternity. I have got a certain amount of criticism, I have had creative blocks in between the films I made since the time I stepped into the world of cinema, but the excitement of narrating a story is the constant that drives me every day,” Madhur said in one breath and then took a pause.

‘Chandni Bar’ featured Tabu, Atul Kulkarni, Rajpal Yadav, Ananya Khare and Upendra Limaye, among others, and it was made with a budget of around Rs 1.5 crore.

Recalling that time, Madhur said: “My budget for the costume in the film ‘Heroine’ was much more than that! But look, I am not complaining at all. Till then, I had not delivered any successful film and ‘Chandni Bar’ was not a conventional film anyway. There have been films made based on the life of sex workers, tragic lives of women, and so on, but my film was very different. It was coming from some of the real-life incidents that I took up and weaved a story around them.”

Continuing with his story, Madhur said in his interview : “I remember how someone said to me that the title of the film itself is so B-grade that no one wants to invest money in it. I was suggested to put more item songs and make the story ‘loud’! I was sure that the female protagonist could go through a lot, but I would treat a female character with relatability and a certain dignity.”

The performances of Tabu, Atul and Ananya in the film were equally well-received by audiences and critics alike, Madhur said it was the presence of Tabu that took the story to the next level altogether.

“When eventually Lata Mohan, my producer, put immense trust in my film and made not compromises with the storytelling, I knew I had to deliver the best. And I am ever thankful to all my actors … really I am. Tabu heard the narrative and she loved the character and came on board. Even though she was so young back then, she played the mother of two children in the film without any hesitation.

“Whether it was because of her screen presence or her skilled performance, our film got a different dimension because of Tabu. Now, when after all these years, people count ‘Chandni Bar’ as one of her best performances in her career, it makes me feel emotional and proud at the same time,” smiled Madhur.

Atul Kulkarni (Wikipedia)

Being a filmmaker who always made films within limited budgets, Madhur said it did turn out be a limitation in some instances during the ‘Chandni Bar’ shoot. “I was not thinking too much about the limitations placed by the budget because for me it was like, finally I am making a film the way I want to … that itself was exciting. You know, the budget was so low that we did not have a monitor on the sets, so we did not get a chance to recheck the shots … so there were almost no retakes!

“I remember those crowd scenes were so tough to shoot on a limited budget. To gather a crowd, we had to call a lot of locals and junior artistes and we had to pay them. So for me, it was just somehow getting the right shot so that we did not need to recreate the scene again.

“There were some technical challenges as well. But I would say again, I am not complaining. I would say it to all budding filmmakers as well, that count it as a blessing when you get an opportunity to tell a story without any creative compromises, especially when they are fairly new to the industry. Do not sulk about budgets, find creative solutions to the problem.”

Since 2001, Madhur has had no looking back, having delivered films such as ‘Satta’, ‘Page 3’, ‘Corporate’, ‘Traffic Signal’, ‘Fashion’, ‘Jail’ and ‘Heroine’, working with some of Bollywood’smost celebrated actors, such as Konkona Sen Sharma, Kunal Khemu, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut, Ajay Devgn and Neil Nitin Mukesh. ‘Page 3’, ‘Traffic Signal’ and ‘Fashion’ have won National Film Awards, along with other accolades.

“Yes, there was a time when I was not making films because there was a creative block,” Madhur said, looking back. “And you see, I am a creative human being, not a machine. Twenty years with 15 films is fine with me. I have been making films without being a part of any lobby or group in Bollywood. I was an independent filmmaker, I am and I will remain the same.”

Madhur said he had completed shooting his latest film ‘India Lockdown’, which will be releasing soon. “Now, when I look back, I hold a sense of satisfaction about my journey because when I started, I did not know if my work would get recognition,” Madhur said. “Now that I have got that and much more, I am more focused on telling stories that matter to me and eventually to my audience, because for me, my film is the mirror of society,” he added, signing off.

Aparna Sen’s ‘The Rapist’ all set for world premiere

Widely acknowledged as the largest film festival in Asia, the Busan International Film Festival will be held from October 6 to October 15…reports Asian Lite News.

Aparna Sen’s films are always sensational that stick on a social cause or issue. National Award-winning actress and filmmaker Aparna Sen’s directorial ‘The Rapist’ is all set for its world premiere at the 26th edition of the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF).

Talking about the film, Aparna said, “Apart from trying to explore the reasons why our society turns out rapists in such numbers and looking into the inequalities in our social system that are responsible for giving rise to criminals, what drew me to this story, was the psychology of the three protagonists.

“Stripping off the layers and the carefully built-up facades to get at the person underneath was a fascinating process. Fascinating too was getting the two Indias to come face to face – the India that lives in urban slums with its age-old beliefs, and educated urbane India with its ‘progressive’ value systems.”

The film features Konkona Sen Sharma and Arjun Rampal in pivotal roles.

‘The Rapist’ chronicles the journey of three protagonists and how their lives get entwined because of one horrific incident. The film looks beyond the obvious crime, to explore not only how it affects the survivors and perpetrators of the crime, but also delves into how one’s idealistic views are drastically altered when the truth hits uncomfortably close to home.

The film is produced by Applause Entertainment.

Sameer Nair, CEO of the production house, said, “Collaborating with Aparna Sen for our first feature has been something we’ve been excited about since we heard this powerful story. The enthusiasm has only doubled up with a nomination for the Kim Jiseok Award, and a world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), the most celebrated film festival in all of Asia. We’re happy to have partnered with Quest Films and are confident that Aparna’s unique brand of storytelling, especially of complex themes plaguing our society, will resonate with the world audience at large.”

Widely acknowledged as the largest film festival in Asia, the Busan International Film Festival will be held from October 6 to October 15.

Uncover the best version of yourself

The footwear introduces a new generation of fans to the world of Looney Tunes, featuring colourways and graphic treatments that highlight different characters…writes N. Lothungbeni Humtsoe.

By the time the credits roll in Space Jam: A New Legacy, producer Maverick Carter hopes the audience feels a sense of joy — and not just in watching LeBron James and the Looney Tunes team up in a spectacularly imaginative cartoon universe. Carter hopes that the audience gets the feeling they’ve been on a journey with the characters, following the ups and downs of the cast, culminating in a fun, cinematic finale that playfully stands the test of time.

A unique power that Nike has within the film — on display is their commemorative footwear and apparel collections — tapping into a special mix of inspirations brought by sport: a sense of fun is integral in finding your potential because potential is all about possibility.

“The biggest moment in the movie for our characters is the final game,” says Carter. “It culminates into this epic showdown with real consequences for everyone playing. The game matters. So when a kid sees the characters wearing Nike gear, their imagination makes the connection that Nike gives you the tools to uncover the best version of yourself.”

The footwear introduces a new generation of fans to the world of Looney Tunes, featuring colourways and graphic treatments that highlight different characters. For the court, a three-style series of the LeBron 18 Low in adult and kids sizes uses a split colour design to call out some of the most memorable faceoffs in the franchise’s history, including Bugs vs. Marvin the Martian, Tweety Bird vs. Sylvester and Road Runner vs. Wile. E. Coyote. Toddler sizes include versions of the Air Force 1, featuring a host of characters (don’t worry, there are adult sizes too), and a Bugs LeBron 18.

Previewed in the film is the new LeBron 19. It boasts a double-chambered Air Max unit in the heel and a newly shaped Zoom Air forefoot unit for a reliable underfoot ride for James. According to Nike Basketball footwear designer Jason Petrie, the new platform was inspired by the futuristic magic behind the movie.

“In designing the LeBron 19, we were definitely guided by what was happening in the film,” says Petrie. “We wanted to give LeBron a brand-new feeling that was synonymous with an otherworldly, space-age kind of look.”

On the apparel, Nike and LeBron-branded Dri-FIT uniforms are made from smooth, shiny Durasheen fabric with an engineered print and stitched-down twill logos featuring the two all-star teams: the Tune Squad and the Goon Squad. The Tune Squad varsity jacket incorporates the same premium letter stitching across the chest, while a vibrant, all-over orange print lines the inside.

Taapsee reveals how ‘Haseen Dillruba’ reached her

It’s not just a beautifully written mystery, it has such wonderful characters, which is candy in an actor’s hands,” Taapsee said…reports Asian Lite News.

Taapsee is one of the actresses who choose characters wisely. She has revealed that she was not the first choice of the upcoming mystery thriller “Haseen Dillruba”. The actress claims the film came to her after all options were exhausted.

“‘Haseen Dillruba’ was a film I had a very gut feeling about the day I heard the basic idea from (writer) Kanika (Dhillon). Unfortunately, I wasn’t the first choice for the film and it came to me after all their options were exhausted,” Taapsee said.

She calls the film a candy in an actor’s hand. “The good old saying that, if it’s meant for you it will come to you stands true for this case. It’s not just a beautifully written mystery, it has such wonderful characters, which is candy in an actor’s hands,” Taapsee said.

She added: “I am glad I got to experiment with my look and performance with this one because I am definitely not the go-to person for this kind of character conventionally, and we all love to take risks.”

The film, which also stars Vikrant Massey and Harshvardhan Rane, is about a woman whose heart longs to live like the words captured in a novel, but who finds herself entangled in the murder of her husband.

Vikrant calls the film a perfect blend of humour, quirk, revenge and romance. “I hope it surprises the audience as much as it surprised me when I heard it first. It was an enthralling experience shooting for,” he said.

Harshvardhan feels honoured to be in the same frame with some of our “country’s finest talent”.

“Taapsee and Vikrant, have one thing in common I could never make out if they were joking or if they were serious. I always had to look for tiny nuances to understand the pretext,” he added.

“Haseen Dilruba”, directed by “Hasee Toh Phasee”, helmer Vinil Mathew, will be released on Netflix.

Spotlighting ‘Lesbian love’ in B’wood

The upcoming anthology is all about love and longing. However, one story featuring actresses Konkona Sen Sharma and Aditi Rao Hydari explores a relationship between two women…reports Asian Lite News.

OTT gave wide range of opportunities to real creative contents. Same-sex love stories with male protagonists, although rare, have still been explored on the Hindi screen, but lesbianism is relatively rarer. The rise of OTT culture has created a platform to explore a variety of subjects. Lesbianism, a taboo word in India, is finding space, too, over the recent past.

Moving away from formula-driven content, the digital space has been intrepid in narrating stories where a woman would express love to another woman uninhibitedly.

Nushrratt Bharuccha

There are quite a few projects that have come up spotlighting lesbian love.

Ajeeb Dastaans

The upcoming anthology is all about love and longing. However, one story featuring actresses Konkona Sen Sharma and Aditi Rao Hydari explores a relationship between two women. Titled “Geeli Pucchi” and directed by “Masaan” maker Neeraj Ghaywan, the story revolves around two women who long for an emotional connect and end up finding it in one another.

Bombay Begums

The show, starring Pooja Bhatt, Shahana Goswami, Amruta Subhash, Plabita Borthakur and Aadhya Anand, touches upon themes of ambition, desire, struggle for power and vulnerability through the stories of five modern Indian women in Mumbai. When it dropped, a sensual kissing scene between Plabita and co-actress Sanghmitra Hitaishi created quite a stir.

The Married Woman

The web series is about a relationship two women develop, and the circumstances that lead to it. The show stars Monica Dogra and Ridhi Dogra, and is based on author Manju Kapur’s bestseller novel of the same name.

Four More Shots Please!

The show isn’t just about lesbian relationships but one of the lead characters, played by Bani J, is bisexual. Soon, the story shifts to Bani’s character falling in love with Lisa Ray’s character and the story revolves around their relationship.
