UAE, Kerala have heart-to-heart relationship: Vijayan

“Kerala-UAE relations are not something formal. It is a very close heart-to-heart to relationship,” Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told Binsal Abdulkader in an exclusive interview

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said Kerilites have been loved here very much and they just reciprocate to it

The UAE and south Indian state of Kerala have “a very close heart-to-heart relationship,” the state’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told the Emirates News Agency (WAM).

“Kerala-UAE relations are not something formal. It is a very close heart-to-heart to relationship. All top UAE officials whom I met here told me that Kerala and Keralites occupy a special place in their heart. I did not hear this touching comment from one official but from all,” said Vijayan, who is on a week-long official visit to the UAE.

In an exclusive interview with WAM in Dubai on Thursday, he added that the frank and friendly conversations offered by the Emirati officials in his meetings with them reiterated the deep relationship.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, meets with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, at Expo 2020 Dubai

“They promised to support the developmental projects in Kerala. After all, they have always expressed their love and solidarity towards Kerala whenever the state is in need, especially when the devastating floods occurred in 2018 and 2019,” he said.

Why so many Keralites in UAE?

More than three million Indians constitute the largest expatriate community in the UAE; more than one million of them are Keralites, according to the Indian official.

“It was my privilege and honour to meet His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, on Wednesday. He asked me why so many Keralites have made the UAE, especially Dubai, their second home. I told him Keralites love this country so much. They have been loved here very much and they just reciprocate to it,” Vijayan said.

Sheikh Mohammed met Vijayan at Expo 2020 Dubai, in the presence of H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, and other Emirati and Indian officials.

“As per the protocol, Sheikh Mohammed meets heads of state and government. Still, he was willing to meet [me], the head of a state government in India; it shows his special consideration for Kerala and Keralites. This proves his broadmindedness and magnanimity as a leader,” the Chief Minister said.

Indians well protected in UAE

Keralites have been part of this country’s journey towards development and progress, even before the formation of the UAE, he pointed out. “I am happy that His Highness Sheikh Mohamed and other top leaders acknowledge their contribution.”

“If you ask Indians, they will tell you that the UAE is a place where you can live without any concerns about safety and security. Nothing will change that perception.”

UAE is a living example of how to transform a country into a developed land from the scratches, the Chief Minister believes. “The [Emirati] leadership has a vision for progress and development. Any country that wants to progress, can take a leaf out of the UAE’s book.”

Kerala Week at Expo

The Chief Minister will inaugurate Kerala Week at the Indian Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai on Friday. He said the state will showcase its culture, heritage, unique products, tourism potential, investment and business opportunities.

“It is also a window for Kerala to reach out to the rest of the world,” he said.

UAE-India CEPA

The underway Comprehensive Economic Partnership (CEPA) between the UAE and India would benefit Kerala and Keralites, according to Vijayan.

“I am happy to see that with important agreements such as CEPA, India- UAE relations are going to new heights. Kerala will always contribute to such efforts to strengthen this historical relationship.”

Cooperation in railways, start-ups

The Chief Minister expects that his government would get support from the UAE Government for the flagship project K-Rail, a semi-highspeed rail project in Kerala. “We expect the UAE’s cooperation in the state’s plan to start COVID-19 vaccine manufacturing as well.”

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed meets with Pinarayi Vijayan, along with top Indian diplomats and community leaders

A delegation from Kerala to enhance cooperation with the UAE on start-ups will visit soon. “There is a huge cooperation potential in digital technologies as the UAE is a leader in this sector.”

In this panchayat in Wayanad, tree banking scheme aims carbon neutrality

Most farmers grow coffee and coconut as main crops in their farms. Since most geo-tagged trees are enormous, their massive trunks can support creeper crops like pepper…reports Priyanka Shankar and Nidhin TR

Betty Surendran, a functionary of Kudumbashree, a self-help group supported by the state government, owns 50 cents of land in the Meenangadi panchayat of Wayanad, Kerala. She has successfully geo-tagged seven of the trees on her land after submitting her land tax receipt and her Aadhaar number at the panchayat office. She receives Rs 50 annually for each tree, as long as she does not cut them down.

This incentive for the farmers/landowners in Meenangadi is part of the ‘Tree Banking Project’ started by the NGO Thanal and the Meenangadi Panchayat, under a larger initiative called Carbon Neutral Meenangadi. Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) is a system in which farmers are incentivised in exchange for managing their land in a way that contributes positively to the environment.

The idea was conceived by Dr TM Thomas Issac, the former Finance Minister of Kerala. Thanal helped create a model based on extensive research, which found that in Wayanad, there was an excess emission of 11,412 tonnes of carbon-dioxide equivalent in 2016-17. After interacting with forest officials and agriculture experts, it was decided that trees will be planted based on their contribution to carbon sequestration, economic value, growth rate, canopy area, medicinal and religious value, among other categories. Elected representatives democratically chose Meenangadi to pilot the initiative because the panchayat won an award for being one of the best panchayats in the Green Express Competition organised by Doordarshan and the residents are aware of climate challenges.

“As I own only 50 cents of land, I could plant only seven trees under the project. However, some farmers have added up to 100 trees, contributing to tree banking,” shared Surendran, who also helped Thanal reach out to more farmers.

A win-win situation

The Executive Director of Thanal, Jayakumar C, explained, “Climate change is the biggest challenge we face. We wanted to create a development project based on carbon neutrality, and tree banking emerged as a successful initiative. In 2018, we came up with estimates about how much carbon needs to be offset and how many trees would need to be planted. We then questioned what would keep the farmers motivated to maintain the trees and not cut them down after a couple of decades. Thus, the idea of incentivising farmers for maintaining the trees was born. They receive the incentives annually. The farmer is given total freedom to cut the tree, but if they decide to cut the tree, they pay the money back.”

There is also an option called ‘Tree Mortgage’, wherein the panchayat creates a committee chaired by Forest Department Officers. The officers physically evaluate the tree and place a monetary value for the tree. With this number and approval from the panchayat, the bank can sanction a loan of up to 75% of the value stated against the tree as a liquid asset. This helps the farmers to gain extra money during times of need without cutting down the tree. Meanwhile, farmers can also sell the fruit and other produce from the trees to increase their income.

Most farmers grow coffee and coconut as main crops in their farms. Since most geo-tagged trees are enormous, their massive trunks can support creeper crops like pepper.

“Also, in the long run, we aim for the farmers to be able to sell their produce at a better price in the market, as they can obtain green-friendly tags. This will also help achieve the government’s objective to double the farmers’ incomes,” said Jayakumar.

A trailblazing, carbon-neutral community

Gopi CK has a landholding of 68 cents and has added 53 trees as part of the project. “I think we could protect at least 70% of trees from being cut down. Some farmers are apprehensive that by being part of the project, the government may take control and even prevent them from trimming the branches of the protected trees to provide proper sunlight to other crops. However, there are no such restrictions, and everyone should be able to benefit,” he clarified.

Gopi received Rs 2,650 for protecting his trees as the first annual payment of the tree banking scheme and will continue to receive this each year. He stated that he spends half the day on his farm taking care of the geo-tagged trees and other crops. “During summer, we need to provide shade to the saplings by erecting chopped branches of other trees. Weeds need to be removed from the farm to take proper care of the geo-tagged trees,” he added.

The community is well-informed and aware of the effects of climate change and wants to contribute proactively to positive environmental action. Subramanian R P, who moved to Wayanad in 1995, reminisced that the temperatures used to sink to 10C, but now he cannot stay indoors without a fan. “Large scale chopping of trees has brought up the temperature levels. The trees maintain the local climate, and it is important for the environment and us that we plant more trees,” he said.

Subramanian, who owns 15 cents of land, joined the tree banking project last year by geo-tagging seven trees on his premises. “We have seen examples in the past where despite strict measures, the wood mafia has bypassed rules to cut down trees. By putting in place such monetary schemes, a message is conveyed to the public about the need to protect the green cover in Wayanad. The officials and the NGO need to conduct regular inspections to ensure that the trees in the project remain protected,” he said. He hopes for a hike in the annual payments too.

The trees were also planted with the panchayat’s help through the MGNREGA scheme. Ajith Tomy, the project coordinator for the tree planting project, said, “We surveyed many wards and noticed that farmers with even three trees wanted to be a part of the project just because they want to support the community goals. This spirit motivates us to include more people and survey trees in difficult terrains,” shared Tomy.

Tree banking is just one of the projects that is part of the carbon-neutral plan, including interventions and intelligent integrations across sectors like agriculture, energy, transportation, waste, water, social security, education, health, development, etc. This means projects in energy conservations like LED bulbs, energy-efficient stoves, renewable energy projects like solar street lights, energy parks, biogas plants, electric auto-rickshaws and other initiatives.

Jayakumar encapsulated the spirit of community resourcefulness, “The people of Kerala have always thought about the universal good and collective goals. Tree banking and other environmental projects are successful with community efforts and high literacy rates. This programme is nature-based with public accountability. The model can be customised according to different districts in India and replicated.”

Prayers are being held for one of Kerala’s most popular snake catcher Vava Suresh, who is fighting for his life at the intensive care unit of the Kottayam Medical College hospital after being bitten by a cobra.

Doctor’s attending on him said that his condition continues to be critical, but there has been a slight improvement from the condition that he was brought to the hospital from a private medical facility.

On Monday evening, when Suresh was trying to put the poisonous reptile into a gunny bag, while holding the snake by its tail on one hand, it bit him on his right thigh.

Kerala-born priest becomes England’s youngest bishop

‘I sensed the call to live and work in England. And now, Loughborough feels like home. Our experience is that Leicestershire people are so welcoming,” he said…reports Asian Lite News

An India-born vicar, who grew up in a leprosy hospital in Bangalore where his mother was a nurse, has been consecrated as Bishop in the Church of England with a staff, or crozier, made of Indian rosewood.

The Right Reverend Malayil Lukose Varghese Muthalaly, known as Saju, aged 42 became one of the youngest Bishops when he was consecrated during a Eucharist service at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London by the Archbishop of Canterbury on Tuesday.

“I have been preparing for this service very much aware of what a great privilege it is that people around the world are praying for this moment. There is a very strong sense of the wider church affirming this calling,” said Rt. Rev. Saju.

Two of his four children, Zipp and Abraham, joined him for prayers during the service this week.

While he has started work towards his new role, he will be formally installed and known as Bishop of Loughborough only after a Welcome Service with guests and representatives of the diocese at Brockington Church of England Academy in Enderby, Leicestershire, on February 5.

The service in London marked the feast day of the conversion of St. Paul the apostle, and an insightful sermon was preached on that topic by Dr Selina Stone, tutor and lecturer in theology at St. Mellitus College.

“I absolutely loved the service… There were so many people there cheering you on from here in Leicestershire and from Dubai, from India and other parts of the world,” Rev. Saju told the BBC.

Rev. Saju has previously spoken about how he was born in India and spent the first half of his life there, around the beautiful backwaters of Kerala and then Bangalore. He has spent the last 21 years in England, where he arrived during a gap year and fell in love with Katy, now his wife.

“I sensed the call to live and work in England. And now, Loughborough feels like home. Our experience is that Leicestershire people are so welcoming,” he said.

On his priorities for his new role in the East Midlands region, the reverend added: “The first year I want to just spend time with as many people as I can. I am a stranger to this place, there’s a lot to learn and a lot to listen to.” He also revealed his early to bed, early to rise routine, which includes lots of reading and reflecting. With his four young children, aged between eight and 12, he enjoys playing cricket, which he believes is among the most beautiful contributions the English have made to the world.

As a sporty person, he also enjoys running and has completed a few marathons.

Saju, whose appointment as Bishop in the Church of England was approved by Queen Elizabeth II in November last year, was educated at the Southern Asia Bible College in Bangalore, and trained for the ministry at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. He served his title at St. Thomas’, Lancaster, in the Diocese of Blackburn and was ordained Priest in the Church of England in 2009.

Previously, Saju was appointed Associate Vicar at St. Thomas’, Kendal, and St. Catherine’s, Crook, in the Diocese of Carlisle, north-west England, in 2011. He has served at St. Mark’s, Gillingham and St Mary’s Island in the Diocese of Rochester since 2015 – initially as Priest-in-Charge, before being appointed Vicar in 2019.
