What’s Rahul Gandhi up to: Pinarayi

CM Vijayan pointed out that it was due to a complaint raised first by the Congress against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal that he is in jail now….reports Asian Lite News

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday slammed Rahul Gandhi and the Congress a day after the INDIA bloc protest rally in Delhi where the latter shared the stage with CPI(M)’s General Secretary Sitaram Yechury.

Taking potshots at the grand old party, CM Vijayan pointed out that it was due to a complaint raised first by the Congress against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal that he is in jail now.

CM Vijayan was addressing the media ahead of his election campaign in and around Kozhikode.

He attacked Rahul Gandhi, who is seeking re-election from the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency and is contesting against INDIA bloc partner CPI’s candidate.

“We all know that Rahul, though not the president of the party, is the tallest leader in the Congress party. Just see, who is he contesting against in his constituency — Wayanad, it is the CPI’s Annie Raja, the candidate there. It defies logic and rationale as Congress and CPI are part of the INDIA bloc and instead of taking on the BJP he is taking on CPI candidate,” said CM Vijayan,

“What’s he up to? We all know what happened in Manipur and we also know Annie Raja was put under duress when she spoke against the incidents in Manipur. Did Rahul say anything?” asked the CM.

Incidentally in Wayanad, the BJP came out with a surprise candidate by fielding its state president K. Surendran.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP-BDJS fought together and Tushar Vellapally was the candidate who finished a poor third.

He ended up with just around 78,000 votes which accounted for a mere 7.25 per cent, while Rahul Gandhi won with a staggering margin of over 4.31 lakh votes — the highest margin in the 2019 Lok Sabha seats in Kerala.

Kerala BJP takes a dig at Rahul

Kerala BJP President K. Surendran on Monday said that Congress MP Rahul Gandhi is scared of Muslim leaders and that is why he is not visiting Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

“The Ram devotees in Wayanad have started to ask, why Rahul Gandhi is not visiting Ram Mandir. It’s now proved that Rahul’s secularism is one-sided. He is scared of the Indian Union Muslim League, Jamaat-e-Islami and the SDPI that is why he is not visiting Ram Mandir,” Surendran said while addressing the media at Kalpetta in Wayanad.

Surendran said that Rahul Gandhi may visit Ram Mandir after April 26.

He said that Rahul Gandhi will visit Wayanad on Monday to file his nomination and while he hugs CPI General Secretary D. Raja in Kerala, in New Delhi, they are opposing each other.

“People have understood this hypocrisy. Why are you having one political stand in Delhi and another in Kerala? Why did you oppose the appointing of a Schedule Tribe woman for the post of President? Why is the President of India being ridiculed by Congress? The Wayanad constituency that Rahul represents has around 20 per cent Scheduled Tribe community and yet he opposes the President,” he said.

He said that Rahul Gandhi and Congress protest against the ongoing Enforcement Directorate action on Aravind Kejriwal but will they do the same if ED investigates Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his daughter?

BJP questions SDPI’s tie-up with UDF

In a scathing attack on his electoral opponent in the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, Kerala BJP President, K Surendran on Tuesday asked sitting Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to explain the tie-up with SDPI, the political wing of the proscribed Popular Front of India (PFI).

Surendran attacked MP Rahul Gandhi and his party after top SDPI leaders on Monday said they had decided to support the Congress-led UDF candidates in the April 26 Lok Sabha polls in Kerala.

Referring to the SDPI as PFI, Surendran said the new-found relation was dangerous to the political fabric of the country.

“The Congress claims to be a secular party and being so, why are their state leaders now saying that they will have to discuss the statement of the SDPI leaders. In Wayanad also the SDPI has pledged its support to Rahul. Rahul should explain this tie-up,” said Surendran.

Kerala Congress President, K Sudhakaran said the party will discuss the issue and then make its position clear on the SDPI’s statement.

“What is baffling is, why should the Congress leadership engage in a discussion on this issue of taking support from a terror outfit? It’s doubtful if there is a deal between the SDPI and the Congress and this has to be explained by the latter,” added Surendran.

Surendran is contesting against Rahul Gandhi and the CPI’s candidate Annie Raja for the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat which the senior Congress leader won with the highest margin of over 4 lakh votes in the state in the 2019 polls.

Pinarayi Writes to President, Complains Against Kerala Governor

Vijayan’s letter states that the “president should intervene as Khan is not doing his job as a governor”….reports Asian Lite News

The ongoing tiff between Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Governor Arif Mohammed Khan on Thursday took yet another turn with the former complaining to the President.

In a letter to President Murmu, CM Vijayan has said that Governor Khan was not doing his job and engaged in protocol violations.

Vijayan’s letter states that the “president should intervene as Khan is not doing his job as a governor”.

According to sources Vijayan’s letter states that several Bills passed by the Kerala Legislative Assembly were not being signed by Khan.

Another complaint is that Khan has been violating protocol as was seen a few days back, when on his way to the airport here, he stopped his car and got out to take on the SFI protesters. Also at Kozhikode on Monday, Khan walked through the streets at the famed Sweet Street at Kozhikode.

Incidentally last week, CM Vijayan told the media that things were going from bad to worse with the way Khan was going about and they will have to approach those concerned.

The Governor has often said that he was answerable only to the President of India.

‘He doesn’t deserve my response’

Kerala governor Arif Mohammed Khan hit out at Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday amid the ongoing protests by Student Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) in the state.

“He (Kerala CM) is hiring goons to attack my car. Who were they? They were sent by him or by somebody else. With such a person, I don’t want to join an issue,” he said.

“I don’t want to reply to anything whatever he says. The man who organizes an attack on the Governor does not deserve any response from me,” the Governor added.

He further pointed out the financial emergency in the state, asserting, “Kerala according to their affidavit says is not in a position to honour financial guarantees which the state govt has given. It means that they are not able to perform their constitutional responsibilities. Its clear cut acknowledging that the state is under financial emergency.”

Earlier in the day, SFI members showed black flags to Governor Khan’s convoy in Thiruvananthapuram.

The workers were later detained by police.

This comes amid unrest between Pinarayi Vijayan’s government and Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, the Student Federation of India (SFI), a student wing of the ruling CPI(M), has been staging protests.

The SFI activists’ protests came as they were alleging that the governor has been pushing the “BJP-RSS nominees” to the senate of various universities in Kerala using his authority as the chancellor of universities in the state. (IANS/ANI)

UAE, Kerala have heart-to-heart relationship: Vijayan

“Kerala-UAE relations are not something formal. It is a very close heart-to-heart to relationship,” Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told Binsal Abdulkader in an exclusive interview

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said Kerilites have been loved here very much and they just reciprocate to it

The UAE and south Indian state of Kerala have “a very close heart-to-heart relationship,” the state’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told the Emirates News Agency (WAM).

“Kerala-UAE relations are not something formal. It is a very close heart-to-heart to relationship. All top UAE officials whom I met here told me that Kerala and Keralites occupy a special place in their heart. I did not hear this touching comment from one official but from all,” said Vijayan, who is on a week-long official visit to the UAE.

In an exclusive interview with WAM in Dubai on Thursday, he added that the frank and friendly conversations offered by the Emirati officials in his meetings with them reiterated the deep relationship.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, meets with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, at Expo 2020 Dubai

“They promised to support the developmental projects in Kerala. After all, they have always expressed their love and solidarity towards Kerala whenever the state is in need, especially when the devastating floods occurred in 2018 and 2019,” he said.

Why so many Keralites in UAE?

More than three million Indians constitute the largest expatriate community in the UAE; more than one million of them are Keralites, according to the Indian official.

“It was my privilege and honour to meet His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, on Wednesday. He asked me why so many Keralites have made the UAE, especially Dubai, their second home. I told him Keralites love this country so much. They have been loved here very much and they just reciprocate to it,” Vijayan said.

Sheikh Mohammed met Vijayan at Expo 2020 Dubai, in the presence of H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, and other Emirati and Indian officials.

“As per the protocol, Sheikh Mohammed meets heads of state and government. Still, he was willing to meet [me], the head of a state government in India; it shows his special consideration for Kerala and Keralites. This proves his broadmindedness and magnanimity as a leader,” the Chief Minister said.

Indians well protected in UAE

Keralites have been part of this country’s journey towards development and progress, even before the formation of the UAE, he pointed out. “I am happy that His Highness Sheikh Mohamed and other top leaders acknowledge their contribution.”

“If you ask Indians, they will tell you that the UAE is a place where you can live without any concerns about safety and security. Nothing will change that perception.”

UAE is a living example of how to transform a country into a developed land from the scratches, the Chief Minister believes. “The [Emirati] leadership has a vision for progress and development. Any country that wants to progress, can take a leaf out of the UAE’s book.”

Kerala Week at Expo

The Chief Minister will inaugurate Kerala Week at the Indian Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai on Friday. He said the state will showcase its culture, heritage, unique products, tourism potential, investment and business opportunities.

“It is also a window for Kerala to reach out to the rest of the world,” he said.

UAE-India CEPA

The underway Comprehensive Economic Partnership (CEPA) between the UAE and India would benefit Kerala and Keralites, according to Vijayan.

“I am happy to see that with important agreements such as CEPA, India- UAE relations are going to new heights. Kerala will always contribute to such efforts to strengthen this historical relationship.”

Cooperation in railways, start-ups

The Chief Minister expects that his government would get support from the UAE Government for the flagship project K-Rail, a semi-highspeed rail project in Kerala. “We expect the UAE’s cooperation in the state’s plan to start COVID-19 vaccine manufacturing as well.”

KERALA: Catching the winds of change

Pinarayi Vijayan’s historic victory vindicates the Communist-led Left Democratic Front government’s people-focus rule …. Writes Sabin Iqbal

Not every firebrand, trigger-happy revolutionary gets the opportunity to become a seasoned statesman. Particularly, not one with a history of violent political feuds and a tempestuous past. As one attains political and leadership maturity, and becomes a people’s leader in a democracy, the angry storms of youth and an incendiary party are tamed, and tucked within, paving the way for a new brand of communist.

Pinarayi Vijayan takes oath second time as the cm of kerala . (Photo:pallav paliwal)

For years, Pinarayi Vijayan has been laying brick after brick to build this new visage of a communist leader, who is people-focused and investor-friendly.

Not many has his uncanny ability or the opportunity to weather the self-destructive storms within, and emerge as a statesman, standing up for his people, leading them in times of catastrophes, and giving them a glimmer of hope in a time of hovering dark clouds of communal hatred and religious and doctrinal polarisation.

The first chief minister of Kerala to overcome the anti-incumbency electoral pattern of the state to assume power in successive terms, Vijayan has shown flashes of transformation into a statesman, a far cry from his ‘eye-for-eye’ and ‘tooth-for-tooth’ image of his youth with ‘burning eyes and fiery tongue’. In other words, a walking away from the once unalloyed brand of communism to a corporate-friendly version. He may have his reasons for the drift, and they have been validated by the historical victory in successive elections.

His address to the people of Kerala on the day of the historical win on May 2 in which he underlined the importance of taking people into confidence, and of governance for the benefit of the people, we heard the early echoes of a leader trying to break free of political confines.

“This victory belongs to the people of Kerala. I thank you all for reposing faith in the LDF (Left Democratic Front) once again. We need to come together more than ever before to tackle this pandemic and to take Kerala forward in the path of development, welfare and secularism!” he tweeted. He also came down heavily on the UDF (United Democratic Front) legislator who moved court against the government’s Life Mission project. “In such times of disasters and distress, we should stand together, across the lines party divide,” he said in his victory speech.

Over the years, Vijayan has smudged the veracity of the red, drawing flak for his alleged soft-pedalling with the corporates, taking the party towards some detours which have not gone down well with the ‘puritans’ in the party. But Vijayan has evolved into a practical and pragmatic leader, and what we see now are also the signs of him evolving into a possible statesman of a leader.

If we look across Southeast Asia, we see the communist governments changing tack or facing the anger of the people because of the increasing degree of poverty and suffering. Doctrinal chimeras cannot keep hungry people quiet for long.

In fact, the floods that inundated Kerala in an unprecedented way, and the outbreak of Nipah virus, the cyclone that ravaged the southern coastal villages and now the coronavirus wreaking havoc have tempered and conditioned the leader in Vijayan. Crises bring forth character,  and in his case, it has brought forth the inherent leadership qualities.

Not that he is going to have a walk in the park.

It is no secret that Kerala’s economy is a dog’s dinner. A consumer state, Kerala depends heavily on tourism, foreign exchange, taxes on booze, and, to an extent, returns from its IT industry. But that’s not enough to keep the wolf at bay. Successive governments have borrowed from international agencies, pushing the state into debt. Despite the high-brow projects under KIIFB (Kerala Infrastructure Investment Funds Board), the exchequer is as good as scraping empty.

Kerala’s total debt burden has seen an increase of 70.21 per cent in the five years from 2014-15 to 2018-19. The total burden of debts and interest was Rs 1,41,947 crore in 2014-15, and it shot up to Rs 2,41,615 crore in 2018-19, according to the CAG report. The per capita debt has also seen an increase from Rs 42,499 in 2014-15 to Rs 66,561 in 2018-19.

Vijayan has no magic wand. He came to power in the first term on a slogan that ‘LDF will set everything right’. Not that everything has been set right. But in the last five years, people in Kerala knew that there was a leader in place. Someone who had the chutzpah to stand up against the diktats of a Hindu right-wing Union government. He took them on, but brought it on his government what according to him was a witch-hunt by central agencies with a clear political agenda.

Now that he has won the people’s  mandate for another five years on the promise of ‘delivering the promises’, the BJP, licking its electoral wounds and baying for his political blood, will make sure that the coming tenure will not be an easy ride for Vijayan or the LDF. Stifling the already-choked State for funds could be an easy method. The possible continuation of the central agencies’ intervention in the State’s affairs looms large.

Not that Vijayan is a saintly leader. Never. In fact, he has, at times, shown signs of highhandedness. He has earned the tag of ‘Modi in mundu’ for his style of leadership which often borders on being haughty and arrogant—at least to those outside the ring of his trusted allies and sycophants. Despite the occasional aberrations of oneupmanship and haughtiness, which may be forgiven in the larger context of able governance, and his ‘serious and hard-to-please look’, Vijayan the chief minister has begun to show signs of mellowing.

But the decision to bring in all-new cabinet for the second tenure was a surprise move. Though it has been termed as a decision by the party, one cannot absolve Vijayan of any role in the decision. Leaving out KK Shailaja Teacher, who had done remarkably well as Health Ministry and was hugely popular, was a real surprise move.

The UDF, especially Congress Party, has shrunk into insignificance. There has to be much soul-searching for the party, and its groups. They will be better off if they take a leaf out of the LDF’s book. Choosing a relative younger VD Satheeshan as Opposition leader is a welcome sign.

The new-gen communist leaders know that it is imperative that they catch the winds of change, lest they face the fate of the Congress Party.(A senior journalist, Sabin Iqbal is the author of two novels, The Cliffhangers, and Shamal Days.)
