Russian missiles hit Kiev

Air raid sirens reportedly also rang out across several other Ukrainian regions. Local military commanders in Kiev accused Russia of changing its tactics and deliberately targeting the civilian population…reports Asian Lite News

Russian missiles have hit Ukraine’s capital, Kiev, following two nights of heavy drone strikes, the media reported. They were all reportedly shot down and there are no reports of casualties.

Flaming debris from the intercepted missiles landed in residential areas in central Kiev. Russia has launched 16 air attacks on the Ukrainian capital this month.

The latest, however, was unusual because it took place during the day — and seemed to be targeted at the city centre.

All other air assaults on the capital so far in May have taken place at night and appeared to be directed at critical national infrastructure and air defences on the outskirts.

Air Force spokesman Yuri Ihnat said that Iskander ballistic missiles were used in the latest attack and that it was possible S-300 and S-400 missiles had also been fired. According to reports, only one person was injured and all missiles were destroyed by Ukrainian air defences. Russian authorities claimed all their targets had been hit.

Air raid sirens reportedly also rang out across several other Ukrainian regions. Local military commanders in Kiev accused Russia of changing its tactics and deliberately targeting the civilian population.

It certainly appears that Moscow wants to step up its pressure on Ukraine even further ahead of any counter-offensive, the BBC reported.

Ukrainian Parliament backs 50-year sanctions on Iran

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Parliament has endorsed a decision of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) to impose sanctions on Iran for 50 years, lawmaker Oleksii Honcharenko said on Telegram.

The sanction bill, which was submitted to the Parliament by President Volodymyr Zelensky, was on Monday supported by 328 votes in favour, with the required minimum of 226.

On May 27, the NSDC approved a decision, envisaging the introduction of restrictive measures against Iran, which include a complete ban on trade with military equipment and dual-use goods and services.

The sanctions also include the suspension of transit of resources, flights and transportation in Ukraine by Iranian residents.

The prohibition of performing some economic and financial obligations in favor of Iranian residents and a ban on the transfer of technologies to Iranian residents are also on the sanction list.

Earlier this month, Zelensky said Iran was supplying combat drones to Russia, which are used in attacks against Ukraine.

In video footages on social media, loud explosions could be heard as well as air defence systems were seen shooting down suspected Russian missiles, reports the BBC.

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said some rocket debris had fallen in central districts, including on the city’s zoo.

There were reports of injuries.

Serhiy Popko, head of the Ukrainian capital’s military administration, described the latest barrage as being the “maximum number of attack missiles in the shortest period of time”.

“According to preliminary information, the vast majority of enemy targets in the airspace of Kiev were detected and destroyed,” the BBC quoted the top official as saying.

‘US adding fuel to the fire’

The Ukrainian authorities have long asked the United States to supply high-tech, medium-range rocket systems…reports Asian Lite News

The US is “adding fuel to fire” by supplying weapons to Kiev, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday in response to US President Joe Biden’s decision to provide more advanced missile systems to Ukraine, media reports said.

“We believe that the United States is purposefully and diligently adding fuel to the fire,” Peskov told reporters on a regular conference call, CNN reported.

The Ukrainian authorities have long asked the United States to supply high-tech, medium-range rocket systems. Biden said on Tuesday the US is providing Ukraine “more advanced rocket systems and munitions” as its war with Russia grinds on.

“Such supplies do not contribute to the Ukrainian leadership’s willingness to resume peace negotiations,” Peskov said, CNN reported.

Peskov also added the Kremlin does not trust Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky’s words that Kiev would not use multiple launch rocket systems to attack the Russian territory if they receive them from the US.

Washington’s arming of Ukraine with heavier weapons increases the risk of direct US-Russia confrontation regardless of American statements that they want to mitigate this risk, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said on Wednesday.

The diplomat was commenting on the news that the US has decided to supply HIMARS multiple rocket launchers to Ukraine.

Any arms supplies, which continue and escalate, increase the risk of such a development,” Ryabkov told journalists, referring to the possibility of a direct confrontation between Russia and the US, RT reported.

Russia warns London for provoking Kiev

Such provocation in the event of an attempt to implement such strikes by Ukraine “will immediately lead to a proportional response”, the ministry stressed…reports Asian Lite News

The Russian Ministry of Defense has warned Britain that London’s direct provocation of the Kiev regime to strike targets on Russian soil will result in a proportionate response.

Western advisers in Ukrainian decision-making centres will not be a problem as part of the response, Russia said, RT reported.

“The Russian Ministry of Defense drew attention to the statement of the deputy head of the British defense department, James Hippie, that ‘it will not necessarily be a problem’ if the weapons provided by the UK to Kiev are used to strike targets on Russian territory,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

Such provocation in the event of an attempt to implement such strikes by Ukraine “will immediately lead to a proportional response”, the ministry stressed.

“Advisers from among the nationals of one of the Western countries, located in Ukrainian decision-making centers in Kiev, ‘will not necessarily be a problem’ when Russia makes decisions on retaliatory actions,” the Ministry of Defense said.

Earlier developments show that the British authorities will send 120 armoured vehicles and anti-ship systems to Ukraine as part of the next package of military assistance.

The Embassy of Ukraine to the United Kingdom tweeted a picture of Boris Johnson sitting alongside Zelenskyy in an office. This visit comes as the Johnson government has announced defensive aid to Ukraine with a new £100m package.

The new support will include: more NLAW anti-tank missiles, additional Javelin anti-tank systems, additional loitering munitions, additional Starstreak air defence systems, and additional non-lethal aid including ballistic helmets, body armour and night-vision goggles.

This package amounts to more than £100 million and has been designed in consultation with the Armed Forces of Ukraine to ensure that it meets their military needs. This builds on the £350 million of military aid and around £400m of economic and humanitarian support that the UK has already provided.

As well as providing bilateral lethal aid, the UK Armed Forces – alongside Polish, US and international partners – have established an International Donor Coordination Centre in Stuttgart.

Opinion divided as Russians close in on Kiev

The lightning strike reportedly launched at first by the Russians was according to western assessment neutralised by a strong fightback by the Ukrainians…reports Ashish Ray

Opinion is divided among western military experts as to whether Kiev, capital of Ukraine, will fall to Russian forces over the next few days.

Retired American Lieutenant General Ben Hodges now a security analyst, who visited the city four weeks ago, speaking from Frankfurt in Germany, expressed doubts to BBC about Russia’s ability to capture Kiev. Most others though are apprehensive that this was inevitable.

A 40-mile convoy of Russian armoured vehicles rumbling towards the capital from its north was stationary for over a week. Satellite images obtained from Maxar Technologies released by the United States’ defence department known as the Pentagon indicated the vehicles with heavy artillery and thousands of soldiers had moved since Thursday; and some of them were within five kilometres of the city.

The US officials claimed the Russians have “largely dispersed and redeployed”. Kiev’s mayor Vitali Klitschko told BBC: “Every street, every building, every checkpoint has been fortified.”

The British defence ministry said the Kremlin could be close to encircling if not entering a metropolis of three million people, although half its population have left for safer areas within the country or neighbouring countries. “Russia is likely seeking to reset and re-posture its forces for renewed offensive activity in the coming days,” Reuters quoted the British defence ministry as saying.

The lightning strike reportedly launched at first by the Russians was according to western assessment neutralised by a strong fightback by the Ukrainians. After more than two weeks of warfare, while the Russians have surrounded several cities, they control only one, which is Kherson in southern Ukraine close to Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.

However, TASS reported that the Russian defence ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov in Moscow stated Russia’s air defence forces downed three Ukrainian Mil Mi-25 helicopters and eight unmanned aerial vehicles in the past 24 hours. He also said the Russian air force destroyed 107 Ukrainian military facilities in the same period. These are said to include military airfields in Lutsk and Ivano-Frankovsk.

“Since the start of the operation, a total of 3,213 Ukrainian military infrastructure facilities were disabled,” Konashenkov claimed. He added: “As many as 98 aircraft, 118 unmanned aerial vehicles, 1,041 tanks and other combat armoured vehicles, 113 multiple rocket launchers, 389 field artillery pieces and mortars, 843 military motor vehicles were destroyed.”

There was no independent verification of the claim. But both Ukrainian and western sources admitted the Russians have inflicted heavy losses on Ukraine’s conventional defence capability. Ukraine has therefore adopted guerrilla tactics, with armed citizens involved in the resistance.

Reuters also reported social media platform Facebook “will temporarily allow some posts that call for the death of (Russian President Vladimir) Putin or Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in countries, including Russia, Ukraine and Poland, according to internal emails to its content moderators.” The Russian embassy in Washington demanded that the US stop the “extremist activities” of Facebook.

‘Russia won’t forget Britain’s weapon supply to Kiev regime’

Moscow said London has completely subordinated its foreign policy to the task of causing as much damage as possible to Russian national interests, reports Asian Lite News

Russia will not forget Britain’s desire to cooperate with ultra-nationalist forces in Ukraine and the supply of British weapons to the Kiev regime, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.

“Let’s not forget the cooperation of the British with the Kiev regime and ultra-nationalist forces in Ukraine, the continued supply of British weapons these days, which are being used against the civilian population of Donbass and the Russian military,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

In fact, London has completely subordinated its foreign policy to the task of causing as much damage as possible to Russian national interests, Moscow noted.

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss

“For now, British Foreign Minister Elizabeth Truss is calling on her compatriots to go fight for Ukraine, and there are calls in the House of Commons to send all Russians out of Britain,” the ministry said, RT reported.

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that Russia would not allow the Anglo-Saxons to interfere in the affairs of the country.

“We will not tolerate the attempts of the Anglo-Saxons to interfere in the internal political processes in our country, to destabilize the situation, to instill values that are alien to us,” she said.

Ukrainian diplomat expelled from Russia for ‘spying’

The Russian Foreign Ministry asked a Ukrainian diplomat to leave the country after he was caught red-handed receiving classified information from a citizen of Russia.

In a statement on Saturday, the Ministry said it had summoned Ukraine’s Charge d’Affaires Vasily Pokotilo after the Federal Security Service intelligence agency briefly detained Ukrainian consul Aleksandr Sosonyuk in St. Petersburg on Friday for obtaining classified information about Russian law enforcement agencies, reports Xinhua news agency.

The Russian side pointed out the inadmissibility of Sosonyuk’s activity, which was incompatible with the status of a consular officer and detrimental to Moscow’s security interests, the statement said.

The Ministry said that his stay on Russian territory is undesirable and that it is “recommended” that he leave the country within 72 hours starting April 19.
