‘Whenever I was in doubt, I turned to Gandhiji’

About the present times, the President said that he believes the National Education Policy will go a long way in making it possible for young Indians to connect with their heritage and also find their feet in the 21st century…reports Asian Lite News

Outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind, addressing the nation on the last day of his office on Sunday, said during his tenure in the highest constitutional post of the country, whenever there was a doubt over anything, he used to turn to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi.

“….whenever I was in doubt, I turned to Gandhiji and his famous talisman. His advice of recalling the face of the poorest man and asking myself if the step I am about to take will be of any use to him,” he said in a televised address, and urged his fellow citizens to contemplate the Mahatma’s life and teachings at least for a few minutes every day.

Kovind said during his tenure in the office of President, he received full cooperation, support and blessings from all sections of society.

“I will especially cherish the occasions when I had an opportunity to meet our brave jawans of the armed forces, paramilitary forces and the police. Their patriotic zeal is as amazing as it is inspiring,” he said.

The President shared his childhood memory, referring to the time when he was growing up in a small village and the nation had only recently achieved Independence.

“There was a fresh wave of energy to rebuild the country; there were new dreams. I too had a dream, that one day I would be able to participate in a meaningful way in this nation-building exercise,” he said.

Stressing that a young boy living in a mud house could not have any idea about the highest Constitutional office of the Republic, he said: “But it is testament to the strength of India’s democracy that it has created pathways to let each citizen take part in the shaping of our collective destiny. If that Ram Nath Kovind from village Paraunkh is addressing you today, it is solely thanks to the inherent power of our vibrant democratic institutions.”

In his address, he also touched upon the freedom struggle by which India gained Independence.

“I have always strongly believed that no other country has been as fortunate as India in having a galaxy of leaders, each of whom was an exceptional mind, within a span of a few decades in the early twentieth century,” Kovind said.

“From Tilak and Gokhale to Bhagat Singh and Netaji, from Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel and Syama Prasad Mookerjee to Sarojini Naidu and Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay – nowhere in the history of humankind have so many great minds come together for a common cause,” he added.

About the present times, the President said that he believes the National Education Policy will go a long way in making it possible for young Indians to connect with their heritage and also find their feet in the 21st century.

He also stressed on healthcare which is an essential part of our lives. “The pandemic has underlined the need to further improve the public healthcare infrastructure. I am glad that the government has accorded top priority to this task. Once education and healthcare are in place, economic reforms will let citizens find the best course for their lives,” he underlined.

Prez lauds role of medical fraternity

He noted that in Rourkela and its adjoining areas, the medical teams of SAIL did commendable work of protecting people by their tireless efforts…reports Asian Lite News Desk.

During his three day visit in Odisha President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday emphasised that for the inclusive development of the country. He asked for strong socio-economic structure is necessary along with the industrial advancement.

The President said that Rourkela Steel Plant has played a major role in the industrial development of our country. He was addressing the inauguration of a Super Specialty Hospital in the Rourkela Steel Plant.

Kovind said that Rourkela Steel Plant has made conscious efforts to bring changes. To him, it is not only in the industrial activities but also in the fields of healthcare, education, culture and sports.

The President noted that till now this area was deprived of super specialty medical facility.

About six years ago, the Prime Minister had laid the foundation for developing the Ispat General Hospital as a Super-Specialty Hospital. And today, it is ready to serve the people of region.

He noted that this Hospital would not only cater the super specialty medical needs of Odisha but also adjoining areas of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.

“Covid-19 pandemic has shown its macabre form across the world. In this difficult time, our medical fraternity has fought an extraordinary battle against an invisible and unknown enemy,” Kovind said.

He noted that in Rourkela and its adjoining areas, the medical teams of SAIL did commendable work of protecting people by their tireless efforts.

The President said that the nation would always be indebted to them for the selfless services rendered by the healthcare community and their dedication to humanity.

Earlier addressing the 18th annual convocation of NIT Rourkela, Kovind said one objective of the National Education Policy is to make India a global knowledge super power in 21st century and institutions like NIT Rourkela have to play a major role in achieving these national aims.

He said that as the 2nd largest government run technology institute in Eastern India, NIT Rourkela has made significant contribution to the field of engineering and technology.

For over six decades, this institution has been enriching the pool of technical professionals in the country.

Pointing to the fact that NIT Rourkela has students from all over India and also from other countries, the President said that the community of over 7000 students studying in this 700 acre campus represents rich diversity.

It increases cross-pollination of learning and promotes understanding between different cultures. It also strengthens people-to-people ties between nations.

Raising the issue of less participation of women in technical education, Kovind said that in the most of the convocations he attended across the country, he noticed that girl students are outshining boy students in liberal arts, humanities, medical sciences, law and several other areas.

However, it has been observed that the enrolment of women in technical and scientific disciplines is low. According to a recent survey, enrollment of women in Engineering and Technical Institutes across India is only about 20 per cent.

He emphasized that girls should be encouraged to pursue technical education and excel in the same manner as they do in other areas.

The President said that growth and excellence of women in technical areas would add a new dimension to national development.

“It would promote gender empowerment at the higher levels in the field of science and technology. It would also help women break the glass-ceiling in one of the most important spheres in the world of 21st century.”
