Medvedev blames US for “war crime” in Gaza hospital strike

The attack on Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in central Gaza City on Tuesday has left hundreds of deaths and injuries….reports Asian Lite News

Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev on Wednesday denounced the strike on a hospital in the Gaza Strip a “monstrous” war crime, for which the United States bears responsibility.

“The monstrous strike on a hospital in the Gaza Strip is undoubtedly a war crime,” Medvedev wrote on his social media channel.

“And the final responsibility for it lies with those who cynically profit from wars in different countries and on different continents. Those who mindlessly hand out colossal money for weapons, loading their military-industrial complex. Those who deceitfully broadcast about their global mission to protect democratic values. The United States of America,” he said.

The attack on Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in central Gaza City on Tuesday has left hundreds of deaths and injuries. The Gaza-based health ministry said the airstrikes were carried out by Israel, while the Israeli military said the Islamic Jihad organization is responsible for the “failed shooting” that targeted Israel.

Medvedev seals hard-court hat-trick with Dubai Tennis championship

Having lifted trophies in Rotterdam and Doha in February, Medvedev is the third player to win three titles in as many weeks since 2021…reports Asian Lite News

Daniil Medvedev completed an ATP Tour hat-trick on Saturday when he overcame Andrey Rublev 6-2, 6-2 to win the Dubai Tennis Championships, here.

The third seed produced a consistent performance throughout the 68-minute clash to extend his winning streak to 14 matches.

Having lifted trophies in Rotterdam and Doha in February, Medvedev is the third player to win three titles in as many weeks since 2021, joining Casper Ruud (July 2021) and Felix Auger-Aliassime (October 2022).

“It is amazing because at the start of the year, it was not perfect. In tennis when you don’t win matches you have doubts. Now it just feels better. I was really happy with these three weeks and I am looking forward to the next ones,” Medvedev said.

The 27-year-old’s strong hard-court form has lifted him to No. 6 in the ATP Live Rankings, rising above Rublev, who drops to No. 7. With his Tour-leading 19th win of the season, Medvedev improved to 5-2 in his ATP Head to Head series against the 25-year-old Rublev.

Following his 18th tour-level title, Medvedev will next compete at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, where he will be looking to continue his winning run. The former World No. 1 is six victories from equalling his career-best winning streak on the ATP Tour, having earned 20 consecutive victories from November 2020 to January 2021.

Medvedev entered the final having not dropped a set all week and he played with confidence against Rublev to frustrate the second seed. The 27-year-old committed just two unforced errors in the first set as he sat deep behind the baseline to soak up Rublev’s aggressive hitting.

After clinching the opener, Medvedev continued to find the perfect balance between defence and attack. He turned the tables in the baseline exchanges with his precise crosscourt forehand, breaking twice in the second set to seal his victory.

The 2022 champion Rublev was aiming to become the third repeat titlist at the ATP 500 event in Dubai, alongside Djokovic and Roger Federer.

Notably, Medvedev has won his 18 tour-level titles in 18 different cities. He is the first man in the Open Era to accomplish the feat.

There will be more strikes to come, warns Medvedev

The response came two days after an explosion damaged the strategic Crimean Bridge, for which officials in Kiev claimed responsibility…reports Asian Lite News

In wake of the large-scale air strikes across Ukraine, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned “there will be others”, the media reported.

The close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin signalled that the ramp up in attacks could be the start of a further escalation in the war on Russia’s part, BBC reported.

“Ukraine would be a constant, direct and clear threat to Russia,” he wrote. “The aim of our future actions must be the full dismantling of the political regime in Ukraine.”

A statement of this nature suggests that, if this is indeed the view of the Kremlin, Russia may want to push on with the war until it makes sure the whole of Ukraine is back in Russia’s orbit, BBC reported.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that any further Ukrainian “terrorist” assaults on Russian soil will be met with a significant military response. He was speaking after a wave of missiles struck Ukraine on Monday morning, RT reported.

Putin confirmed that Russian troops carried out “massive strikes with long-range precision weapons on Ukrainian objects of energy, and military control and communications”. The response came two days after an explosion damaged the strategic Crimean Bridge, for which officials in Kiev claimed responsibility.

“If there are further attempts to conduct terrorist attacks on our soil, Russia will respond firmly and on a scale corresponding to the threats created against Russia,” Putin added, RT reported.

Earlier on Monday, multiple regions of Ukraine came under missile strikes, with at least 11 key infrastructure facilities damaged, according to Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmygal.

Putin stated that Russia was retaliating for a number of attempts to strike Russian infrastructure that have been attributed to Kiev.

Medvedev pips Nadal in ATP rankings

Besides, Nadal can even enter an ATP 250s tournament in either Geneva or Lyon next week….reports Asian Lite News

Russia’s Daniil Medvedev has pushed Spain’s Rafael Nadal to No. 3 in ATP rankings, putting the tennis great in danger of not getting a top-2 seeding at the French Open, which is barely three weeks away.

If the Russian — who spent 10 days in bed recovering from Covid-19 before the Madrid Open — holds on to the No. 2 ranking until the seedings are made in two weeks’ time, Nadal would be the No. 3 seed in Paris and potentially on the same half of the draw as No. 1 Novak Djokovic, according to tennis.com.

However, Nadal has a good chance of wresting back the No. 2 position from Medvedev in the coming two weeks as another Masters 1000 tournament — the Italian Open — has kicked off in Rome, where the Spaniard is a nine-time champion and slated to play.

Besides, Nadal can even enter an ATP 250s tournament in either Geneva or Lyon next week.

It was a forgettable past week for both Medvedev and Nadal. They lost before the semi-final stage of the Madrid Open.

While the Russian lost in the third round to Cristian Garin, Nadal was beaten in the quarter-finals by the eventual winner, Germany’s Alexander Zverev.
