India-Egypt Military Drill to Include Hostage Rescue Ops

A Indian Army contingent, comprising 25 personnel, has reached Egypt to take part in the 2nd edition of India-Egypt Joint Special Forces Exercise ‘Cyclone’, the Defence Ministry said on Monday.

According to a ministry official, the exercise, being conducted at Anshas from January 22 to February 1, will focus on tactical interactions, improvised explosive device and hostage rescue scenarios.

The first edition of the exercise was conducted last year in India.

The Indian contingent is being represented by troops from The Parachute Regiment (Special Forces) and the Egyptian contingent, also comprising 25 personnel is being represented by Egyptian Commando Squadron and Egyptian Airborne Platoon, the official said.

As per the official, the aim of the exercise is to acquaint both sides with each other’s operating procedures against the backdrop of special operations in desert/semi-desert terrain under Chapter VII of United Nations Charter.

Exercise Cyclone is designed to develop bilateral military cooperation and strengthen bond between two armies through conduct of discussions and rehearsal of tactical military drills, the official said, adding that the exercise will involve planning and execution of special operations in sub-conventional domain and conducted in three phases.

While the first phase will include military exhibitions and tactical interactions, the second will focus on training on IEDs, counter-IED, and combat first aid.

The third and final phase will encompass a joint tactical exercise based on fighting in built-up area and hostage rescue scenarios.

The exercise will provide an opportunity to both the contingents to strengthen their bond and share best practices, the official

said, adding that will also act as a platform to achieve shared security objectives and foster bilateral relations between two friendly nations.

Exercise ‘Khanjar’ Commences in Himachal Pradesh

The 11th edition of India-Kyrgyzstan Joint Special Forces Exercise Khanjar started at the Special Forces Training School in Himachal Pradesh’s Bakloh. The exercise is being conducted from January 22 to February 3.

The exercise will provide an opportunity for both sides to fortify defence ties while addressing common concerns of international terrorism and extremism. It will also provide an opportunity to showcase the capabilities of cutting-edge indigenous defence equipment. The exercise is an annual event conducted alternately in the two nations.

The Ministry of Defence stated in an official release, “The exercise will provide an opportunity for both sides to fortify defence ties while addressing common concerns of international terrorism and extremism.”

“The exercise will also accord an opportunity to showcase capabilities of cutting edge indigenous defence equipment besides achieving shared security objectives and foster bilateral relations,” it added.

The Indian Army contingent, comprising 20 personnel, is being represented by troops from The Parachute Regiment (Special Forces), according to the press release. Meanwhile, the Kyrgyzstan contingent comprising 20 personnel is represented by the Scorpion Brigade.

The Khanjar exercise is aimed at exchanging experiences and best practices in Counter Terrorism and Special Forces operations in built-up areas and mountainous terrain under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. The exercise will emphasise developing Special Forces skills and advanced techniques of insertion and extraction, according to the release by the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

Earlier, in October, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visited Bishkek to attend the 22nd Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of Government (CHG) to be held under the chairmanship of Kyrgyzstan. During the visit, he met Kyrgyzstan President Sadyr Zhaparov and conveyed India’s support for the successful Kyrgyz SCO Presidency. The two leaders discussed cooperation in banking, energy, health and pharma.

“Delighted to call on President Sadyr Zhaparov of Kyrgyz Republic. Conveyed the personal greetings of PM @narendramodi. Discussed cooperation in banking, energy, health and pharma, defence, agriculture and investments. Conveyed India’s support for the successful Kyrgyz Presidency of SCO Council of Heads of Government,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Jaishankar also held talks with his Kyrgyzstan counterpart, Zheenbek Kulubaev about strengthening India-Kyrgyz cooperation in the fields of trade, economy and developmental projects.

“Good to see my old friend FM Zheenbek Kulubaev in Bishkek. Spoke about strengthening India-Kyrgyz cooperation in the fields of trade and economy, development projects, health and education. Also exchanged views on Afghanistan, West Asia and connectivity,” he added on X. (ANI)

India, Uzbekistan begin joint military drill in Uttarakhand

The 4th Edition of India-Uzbekistan Joint Military Exercise Dustlik commenced on Monday at Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand.

“The 14 days joint training will focus on sharing best practices in Sub Conventional Operations under UN mandate,” tweeted the Additional Directorate General of Public Information, Indian Army. India’s Garhwal Rifles from the Western Command participated in the exercise. And from Uzbekistan, the North Western Military command participated in the exercise. The exercise is biennial, meaning conducted once in two years.

“45 Soldiers each from Uzbekistan and Indian Army are participating in this exercise which is aimed at promoting positive relations between both armies. The Indian Army contingent comprises troops from an Infantry Battalion from the Garhwal Rifles Regiment,” said Indian Army.

It will include field training exercises, combat discussions, lectures, demonstrations and culminate with a validation exercise. Both sides will jointly train, plan and execute a series of tactical drills for neutralisation of likely threats, while learning to exploit new generation equipment and technology for conducting joint operations. Due emphasis is being laid on increasing interoperability between forces, read the Ministry of Defence.

The bonhomie, espirit-de-corps and goodwill generated during the exercise will go a long way in further strengthening the bonds between both armies by enabling understanding of each other’s organisation and methodology of conducting various operations, it added.

With more than 65,000 soldiers, the Army of Uzbekistan is one of the largest in Central Asia.

Uzbekistan is important to India for connectivity to Iran and the Central Asian region. India is trying to expand its trade in the Central Asian region. But the conflicts in Afghanistan are a big hindrance. To counter such security issues, India needs the support of other central Asian countries like Uzbekistan.

Moreover, the Hisar Air Base of Uzbekistan is jointly operated by Indian Air Force and Tajik Air Force. It is also called the Gissar Air Base. India used the base extensively during the Afghan crisis.

Indian Army is deploying the Garhwal Rifles in military exercises. The Garhwal Rifles participated in the recent Dharma Guardian military exercise conducted with Japan.

The 4th Edition of Joint Military Exercise Dharma Guardian commenced on February 17 at Camp Imazu, Japan.

During the 14-day training, troops from both Armies will share their expertise and experiences in Counter Terrorism operations in urban terrain. (ANI)

India, Oman conclude joint military drill ‘Al Najaf IV’

At Rajasthan’s Mahajan Field Firing Ranges, the 13-day Indo-Oman Joint Military Exercise Al Najaf IV came to an end on Saturday. The platoon-level drill which started on August 1, 2022, came to an end with a “solemn closing ceremony.”

The aim of the exercise was to achieve inter-operability and to acquaint each other with operational procedures and combat drills in a Counter Terrorism environment under United Nations mandate. Both the armies were able to achieve the stated objectives, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement

The Indian contingent was from 18th Battalion of Mechanised Infantry Regiment and the Royal Army of Oman contingent was represented by the Sultan of Oman Parachute Regiment.

The exercise was conducted in three phases. The first phase was orientation and familiarisation with weapon, equipment, and tactical drills of each other by the participating contingents.

The second phase was combat conditioning, formulation of joint drills and putting them into practice.

The last phase was a 48 hours validation exercise of key drills and concepts learnt during the first two phases.

Both the contingents jointly took part in the validation exercise which included establishment of Mobile Vehicle Check Post, Cordon, and Search Operations, Heliborne insertion, Room Intervention drills and effective employment of ICV in Counter Terrorism environment.

The exercise also included effective employment of indigenous Advance Light Helicopter ‘Dhruv’, drones and various new generation technologies.

Overall, the exercise was a resounding success. The two armies shared valuable combat experience with respect to Counter Terrorist, Regional Security and Peace Keeping Operations in an international environment, the Ministry said.

It was another significant milestone achieved in ensuring interoperability between the two armies, strengthening the cordial relations between the two countries and another step forward towards ensuring global security, the Ministry added
