Sabyasachi’s largest flagship store in Mumbai

Sabyasachi is a celebration of slow authentic luxury, of the handmade and the finest of Indian craftsmanship…reports Asian Lite News

Sabyasachi Mukherjee is a brand in his own right, widely known for his well-known Indian bridal wear and his distinctive contribution to Indian textiles with a modern twist.

The celebrated fashion designer announced the opening of his luxury house rooted in heritage, craft and culture in Mumbai at ICP Fort Heritage, Veer Nariman Road, Off Horniman Circle, which will be open from Monday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., beginning April 18, 2023.

Sabyasachi is a celebration of slow authentic luxury, of the handmade and the finest of Indian craftsmanship. A brand that revels in India’s legacy but with a uniquely modern perspective, capturing what was and what is, with a single-minded vision to create modern heirlooms.

The store is sprawled over 25,862 sq ft and housed in the majestic neo classical landmark built in the Italianate revival tradition. The neo classical building was completed in 1913 by Chambers and Fritchley and was originally built for the British Bank of The Middle East. The building is classified as a Grade II A heritage structure under the Heritage Regulations of Greater Bombay 1995. Bringing the ideals of fine culture back to this heritage structure, Sabyasachi has reimagined the interiors into an immersive retail space that merges the house’s signature cultural savoir faire with Indian decadence, craftsmanship and history.

Over 100 chandeliers, 275 carpets, 3,000 books and 150 works of art created by the Sabyasachi Foundation, are layered between age-old Tanjore paintings, Pichhwais in the Deccan, Nathdwara and Kota style, vintage photography, Mughal miniatures, rare bronzes, 19th century Company Paintings and rare lithographs. The space is lined with curiosity cabinets sourced from souks, modernist interpretations of Persian Qajars, 18th century Venetian handcrafted chairs, rare French Art Nouveau cabinets and arrogant brass sculptures made in Calcutta.

Leather-bound books, Tang dynasty pottery, rare Canton vases and odd antiquities lie on retrofitted turn of the century furniture with fine inlay work, alongside the house’s now signature block printed silk velvet lined busts, vitrines and lampshades. From Rajasthan to Bengal, vintage handwoven and crafted textiles from across India can be found all across the store, showcasing a sliver of India’s grand crafts legacy.

While the wallpaper and upholstery are part of the Sabyasachi for Nilaya collection by Asian Paints, presenting various house motifs and hallmarks. The space is a living museum and the most realised iteration of the Sabyasachi experience.

Housed within is a micro-exhibit from the Sabyasachi archive currently showcasing couture from the inaugural Sabyasachi X Christian Louboutin collaboration Bater, 2015 and its sequel Firdaus, 2016. Hidden lounges and dens dot each floor, with a tearoom tucked away behind silk velvet drapes, offers guests a moment of pause with a curated list of Sabyasachi’s favourite blends. Even as the signature notes of rose and frankincense waft through the labyrinthine space.

The ground floor homes the Sabyasachi bridal collection. The first floor is dedicated to the brand’s largest showcase of jewellery in the world, housing Fine, Heritage, and High Jewellery collections. And the second floor is home to womenswear, menswear, the international collection, and Sabyasachi Accessories. Sabyasachi’s vision for the retail experience remains consistent across the various cities and stores. It’s an escape and a reminder to step away and into a timeless sense of being and the complete abandon and decadence of the joy of age-old heritage and slow luxury. The store is an homage to the multi-cultural heritage of India, of the cross-cultural exchanges that have played out over the centuries, of Sabyasachi’s Calcutta and of the grand inheritance of luxury that belongs to India.

Developing nations focus of Mumbai G20 meet

India will also focus on accelerating progress in achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs) by raising the profile of development issues across the G20’s working streams…reports Asian Lite News

As India prepares for a meeting under its G20 presidency that will be crucial to securing the interests of developing countries, officials are taking heart from the country’s ability to act as a bridge at a time of divisions within the grouping of the world’s largest economies.

The first meeting of the development working group, to be held in Mumbai from December 13-16, will be used by India to bring to the fore issues that are relevant to developing countries.

The group is part of the G20’s sherpa track and was one of the first working groups to be created in 2010. It has also been behind some notable deliverables over the years.

As officials prepare for the upcoming meeting, they have been buoyed by the fact that despite geopolitical tensions, all sherpas and heads of delegations, including those of the G7, Russia and China, participated in person at all the meetings and side events held in Udaipur as part of the first sherpas meeting held from December 4-7.

After months of deadlock during Indonesia’s G20 presidency, a joint communique was adopted at the G20 Summit in Bali last month, but differences still remained, the people noted.

Keeping with the Indian leadership’s pledge to act as a voice for the developing nations at the G20, the country will call for an enhanced role for the Global South in global decision-making during the development working group’s discussions.

During India’s G20 presidency, the development working group will highlight the need to increase the profile of developing nations in international bodies as part of reformed multilateralism to address contemporary challenges, the people added.

India will also focus on accelerating progress in achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs) by raising the profile of development issues across the G20’s working streams. Financing is key to achieving the 2030 agenda for sustainable development and developing countries face many bottlenecks in this area.

The Covid-19 pandemic severely hampered efforts by countries to meet SDG targets by 2030 by restricting fiscal space, and the SDG financing gap in developing countries is estimated to have increased by 20%.

The development working group has overseen the G20’s development agenda since its inception in 2010. It has also steered the alignment of this development agenda with the SDGs. Besides working on energy and food security, climate change and global health emergencies, the group has dealt with issues such as quality infrastructure and financing for sustainable development.

‘Putin likely to participation in 2023 G20 Summit’

Russian President Vladimir Putin is likely to participate in the G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023, Russia’s G20 (Sherpa) Svetlana Lukash has stated.

“I hope that, of course, [Russia’s president] will go [to the G20 Summit]. But this, in any case, is up to him to decide. Now, when the next summit is one year ahead, I cannot give an answer to such a question. The way I see it, that there are all chances for this,” Lukash told Russian state news agency TASS on Friday. Lukash recalled that the meeting of the G20 leaders in New Delhi, as the Indian organizers had announced, was scheduled for September 9-10, 2023.

Lukash said that she is hopeful that the Russian President will attend the Summit next year, however, it is up to him to take the final call, she added.

The Russian G20 Sherpa said that she is hopeful that her country nation won’t miss a single event and emphasised the significance of Russia’s attendance in order to take a stand and express its opinions.

“I hope that we will not miss a single event – be it a meeting of a working group or a seminar, or a conference. It is important for Russia to participate in any event to demonstrate its position, express its views, and see the best practices that partners from other countries have,” Lukash was quoted as saying by TASS.

The first G20 Sherpa meeting under India’s Presidency kicked off in Udaipur on December 5 where Lukash said that digital transformation and innovations are key drivers of growth and development. She further said, “Hence proposed by #G20India as cross-cutting topics at all the G20 working tracks.”

During the G20 Sherpa meeting held in Udaipur, Russian G20 Sherpa Svetlana Lukash lauded India and Indian Sherpa Amitabh Kant for putting ‘Women-led development’ as one of the group’s key priorities.

Taking to Twitter, Lukash said, “Grateful to #G20India and @amitabhk87 for putting ‘Women-led development’ as one of the key priorities of G20. Women are catalysers of positive transformations!”

In a series of tweets, Lukash said, “So inspired by meeting with highly professional and charming experts of #G20India Team! G20 is destined to succeed with their committed hearts and creative minds!”

Mumbai beat Himachal Pradesh by 3 wickets to win maiden title

With four needed off four, Tanush Kotian hit a six over the fine-leg boundary to finish the game for Mumbai…reports Asian Lite News

Domestic giants Mumbai produced a near-perfect performance to beat Himachal Pradesh by three wickets in the final and won their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title at Eden Gardens, on Saturday.

Put into bat first, Himachal posted a total of 143/8 in 20 overs with Ekant Sen (37 off 29) top-scoring for them. In reply, Mumbai chased down the target in 19.3 overs with three wickets in hand.

Chasing a moderate total, Mumbai were off to a poor start as Rishi Dhawan dismissed Prithvi Shaw (11) and Ajinkya Rahane (1) in the Power-play. However, in-form Shreyas Iyer (34 off 26) stitched two valuable partnerships with Yashasvi Jaiswal (27) and Sarfaraz Khan (36 not out off 31) to take Mumbai to a dominant position in the game.

When Iyer got out to Vaibhav Arora in the 14th over, Mumbai were left needing only 48 runs in 40 balls. But, pacer Arora had other plans as he dismissed both Shivam Dube (7) and Aman Khan (6) in the 17th over. In the very next over, Shams Mulani got out, leaving Mumbai in a tricky position.

It was Sarfaraz Khan, who bailed Mumbai out of trouble. With 25 runs needed off 14 balls, he managed to hit a few lusty blows in the penultimate over, bringing the equation to six runs off the last over. With four needed off four, Tanush Kotian hit a six over the fine-leg boundary to finish the game for Mumbai.

Earlier, Himachal struggled against Mohit Awasthi’s swing and lost two early wickets. Prashant Chopra and Nikhil Gangta gave their team a brief revival but that was undone quickly by Tanush Kotian’s triple strike in the middle overs.

Akash Vasisth (25), Ekant Sen (37) and Mayank Dagar (21) scored valuable runs in the late overs to help the side recover from 58 for 6 in the 10th over to end with 143 for 8 in 20 overs, which wasn’t enough in the end.

Brief scores: Himachal 143/8 in 20 overs (Ekant Sen 37, Akash Vasisth 25; Tanush Kotian 3-15, Mohit Avasthi 3-21) lost to Mumbai 146/7 in 19.3 overs (Sarfaraz Khan 36 not out, Shreyas Iyer 34; Vaibhav Arora 3-27, Mayank Dagar 2-24) by 3 wickets

UK Foreign Secretary Cleverly due in India tomorrow

UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly will arrive in India on Friday for his first official trip to the South Asian country.

Cleverly will meet his Indian counterpart Dr S. Jaishankar and discuss strengthening the UK-India relationship, the UK Foreign Office said.

He will land in Mumbai on Friday to pay respects to those who lost their lives in the city’s terror attack at the Taj Palace Hotel in 2008. He will travel to New Delhi on Saturday.

“Our relationship with India is hugely important to me; as the world’s largest democracy, India is a natural partner for the UK in the Indo-Pacific. It is an economic and tech powerhouse,” Cleverly said. “Our deeper ties will boost both our economies and help to tackle global security challenges.”

“I look forward to working even more closely with India when it takes up the G20 Presidency in December,” he added.

Cleverly is scheduled to speak at the Special Meeting of the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee in Mumbai.

He will call on countries to work together to fight online terrorism – including global terror recruitment campaigns and live streaming of attacks, the Foreign Office said in a statement.

In New Delhi the Foreign Secretary is also due to meet India’s Minister of External Affairs Dr Jaishankar to discuss the latest on the 2030 Roadmap, the landmark commitment to boost cooperation between the UK and India over the next decade under a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Since it was launched last year, huge progress has been made, including the start of ambitious free trade negotiations, the expansion of our defence and security partnership, including through a visit to India last year by HMS Queen Elizabeth and the Carrier Strike Group (CSG), and joint exercises to enhance cyber security collaboration.

Mumbai police get threat of ’26/11-style’ attacks

The message claims that the next strike would revive the memories of the 26/11 terror attacks in the city by heavily armed 10 Pakistani extremists, reports Asian Lite News

The Mumbai Police Traffic Control has received a message purportedly warning of another terror attack in the country’s commercial capital, officials said here on Saturday.

The threats were in a WhatsApp message, ostensibly from a neighbourhood nation, though details of the sender or when the strikes will take place were not clear.

The message also claims that the next strike would revive the memories of the 26/11 terror attacks in the city by heavily armed 10 Pakistani extremists.

Nationalist Congress Party’s Leader of Opposition Ajit Pawar said the state government must take the threat seriously and probe.

The latest threats comes two days after the state suffered a major security scare when a yacht with 3 AK-47 guns and ammunition drifted to the Raigad coast and was stuck at Harihareshwar Beach.

Though a potential terror threat was ruled out, a detailed investigation is being carried out by the ATS and Raigad Police.

Mumbai’s Jinnah House remains a charming orphan

Before Jinnah left for the new country where he was subsequently revered as ‘Founder of Pakistan, Quaid-E-Azam or Father of the Nation’, he had expressed his desire to come and live at Jinnah House sometime…writes Quaid Najmi

Mumbai’s famed landmark — the Jinnah House on Malabar Hill — which was once the hub of brainstorming sessions over the contentious Partition of India, remains a charming orphan since the past 75 years.

Top leaders of the All India Muslim League (AIML) used to converge here frequently to strategise and push forth the much abhorred ‘two-nation theory’, first propounded by Choudhry Rehmat Ali in 1933, when he was studying law at the University of Cambridge.

Though ridiculed initially, that student’s theory — entitled “Now or Never, Are We to Live or Perish Forever”, where he first named the futuristic state of ‘Pak-stan’ — finally landed in Bombay for serious discussions at the Jinnah House.

Then AIML supremo Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Indian National Congress leader Mahatma Gandhi initially negotiated the Partition here in 1944, followed by another decisive round on the nitty-gritties between Jinnah and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1946.

Both Gandhi and Nehru were as reluctant, as Jinnah was adamant on Partition, but as later historical events transpired, the bloody division finally took place in August 1947 — with India flanked by Pakistan to the west and East Pakistan, or modern-day Bangladesh, to the east.

The top brass of AIML, including Jinnah and others — several who later went on to become Presidents or Prime Ministers of the new Muslim nation — confabulated, strategised the country’s break-up, means to browbeat the Congress leaders and solicit cooperation of the British Raj, etc.

The critical details of Partition were hammered in parleys among the three top barristers then — Jinnah, Gandhi and Nehru — before the trio sat with the Britishers to carve out the country into three geographical entities and two political nations.

Before Jinnah left for the new country where he was subsequently revered as ‘Founder of Pakistan, Quaid-E-Azam or Father of the Nation’, he had expressed his desire to come and live at Jinnah House sometime.

But it was never to happen as he passed away in September 1948 — barely eight months after India’s Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated in January 1948.

Twenty-four years later, Pakistan’s eastern Dominion was severed by then Indian Prime Minister Inidra Gandhi, and the erstwhile East Pakistan was born as Bangladesh in December 1971, in what was regarded as ‘sweet revenge’ for the Partition of India in 1947.

After returning from Great Britain to take over the reins of AIML, Jinnah built his beloved European-style house in south Mumbai in 1936, at a staggering cost of Rs 200,000.

Though he owned another bungalow in Delhi, it was the Bombay home where he spent over 10 years before leaving India to take charge of the new nation named Pakistan in 1947.

Sprawled over 2.5 acres of a sea-facing green oasis, the Jinnah House was designed by Claude Batley, using Italian marble, walnut woodwork by foreign artisans. Jinnah had supervised its construction ‘brick-by-brick’ as it bloomed into an awesome mansion with pointed arches, impressive columns, sleek flooring and a luscious garden outside.

Extremely fond of his beautiful abode, Jinnah after Partition even requested Prime Minister Nehru to take care of his home, allot it to any foreign consulate, or to a European family or some refined Indian royalty for a monthly rental of Rs 3,000.

Honouring his wish, Nehru agreed to the proposal but Jinnah died before any rental deal could be finalised. As a special gesture, the house was not declared or seized as ‘Enemy Property’ like many others at that time.

India at one point of time even wanted to hand it over to the Pakistani Consulate in Bombay before it was rented out as the residence-cum-office of the British Deputy High Commissioner from 1955-1983.

For the next 20 years, the house was abandoned and in 2003, a part of it was handed to the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) for its activities, though Pakistan kept demanding it for its Consulate, or even as the headquarters of Pakistan International Airlines, while activists wanted it for a Pakistan-India friendship centre.

Meanwhile, the Jinnah House entered the courts with claims raised by Jinnah’s only daughter, Dina Jinnah-Wadia (who died in the US in November 2017), the mother of Indian industrialist Nusli Wadia.

In 2021, the BJP’s Mumbai unit urged the Centre to convert Jinnah House into ‘South Asia Centre for Arts & Culture (SACAC)’, but there has been no decision yet.

Till the Centre decides on its fate, the enchanting Jinnah House remains a bewitching orphan of history, blatantly ignored while basking in the limelight.

Ex-Mumbai police commissioner sent to 9-day ED custody

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the court has argued that Pandey received Rs 4.54 crore to tap the calls to help Ramkrishna….reports Asian Lite News

A court in New Delhi on Wednesday sent former Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjay Pandey to nine days’ ED custody in connection with a money laundering case pertaining to the phone tapping of the employees of National Stock Exchange (NSE) between 2009 and 2017 allegedly on the instructions of NSE’s former CEO and MD Chitra Ramkrishna.

Pandey who was arrested on Tuesday was presented at the Rouse Avenue Court here.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the court has argued that Pandey received Rs 4.54 crore to tap the calls to help Ramkrishna.

“Pandey incorporated iSec Securities Pvt. Ltd. Though he was not director in the firm, he used to chair every meeting. We have evidence in this respect. He was controlling the entire firm from behind the curtain,” the ED argued.

Pandey in his defence said that the entire case was nothing but a “politically motivated” one. He said that when he in service, he was “fit to maintain law and order situation while now two FIRs have been lodged against me”.

“To analyse and monitor calls, we tapped phones. To tap the phone lines, all the machines were made available by NSE. I never used any machine illegally,” he argued.

The court after hearing the argument of both the sides sent Pandey to nine days’ custody.

Ramkrishna is already in the custody of ED.

ED will now confront Ramkrishna with Pandey, and during the confrontation, the officials would record the statements of both the individuals.

The ED’s case is on the basis of the CBI’s FIR.

The case was lodged by the probe agency on the directions of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

Earlier, the CBI had recorded Pandey’s statement in this connection.

His statement was recorded at CBI’s Mumbai-based headquarters. After questioning, he was allowed to leave.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had also conducted raids in Mumbai, Pune and in several other parts of the country in this connection.

“Pandey ran iSec Securities Pvt. Ltd. It has been alleged that Ramkrishna used this firm to tap the phone of NSE’s employees. The phone calls made by NSE employees between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. were tapped and recorded by iSec Securities Pvt. Ltd. It has been alleged that Pandey helped in tapping the phone calls illegally,” a source had said.

The ED has now got custodial remand of Pandey and he will be confronted with evidence.
