Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday on the sidelines of the G20 Summit interacted with several world leaders including US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Among other dignitaries that he was seen greeting and exchanging Director-General of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
In a series of tweets the Prime Minister’s Office shared several pictures of PM Modi meeting and talking to Ghebreyesus, Guterres and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
One photo captures Modi and Ghebreyesus in a namaste and another shows Modi and Lee Hsien greeting each other in a similar namaste. Other photos shared by the PMO shows Modi and Biden walking with arms around each other, PM Modi embracing President Macron. In yet another photo, Modi is seen with Justin Trudeau and Boris Johnson.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also held separate meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron and Pope Francis. PM Modi also invited Pope Francis to visit India during a “very warm” meeting at the Vatican City which lasted for an hour.
The theme of this G20 meet under the Italian Presidency is centred around ‘People, Planet and Prosperity.’
The PM is scheduled to arrive at Terme di Diocleziano for a cultural programme later in the evening today followed by a dinner that has been planned for G20 leaders and partner countries.
On Sunday, the Prime Minister is expected to have a meeting with Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sanchez and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the sidelines of the G20 summit besides participating in discussions on “Climate Change and Environment and Sustainable Development”. There will be a global summit on supply chain resilience, according to the sources.
On Friday, PM Modi met with top European Union leaders and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi. They congratulated Prime Minister Modi for India’s excellent progress on the COVID-19 vaccination.
The PM also interacted with members of the Indian community-based in Italy and those who have a close association with India through spheres like academics, spirituality and more.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited Pope Francis to visit India during a “very warm” meeting at the Vatican City which lasted for an hour on Saturday.
“Had a very warm meeting with Pope Francis. I had the opportunity to discuss a wide range of issues with him and also invited him to visit India,” Modi tweeted after meeting the Pope.
The meeting was scheduled only for twenty minutes however, it went on for an hour, sources said. PM Modi and the Pope discussed a wide range of issues aimed at making our planet better such as fighting climate change and removing poverty.

It may be recalled that the last Papal Visit happened in 1999 when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister and Pope John Paul II came. Now it is during PM Modi’s term that the Pope has been invited to visit India.
PM Modi departed from the Vatican City after his meeting with Pope Francis on Saturday ahead of the G20. He was accompanied by National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr S Jaishankar.

India and European Union discussed issues like climate change, COVID-19 pandemic and contemporary global and regional developments during a joint meeting on sidelines of the 16th G20 Summit in Rome, a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) release said on Friday.
According to the statement, the meeting was held among Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of the European Council, Charles Michel and President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

PM Modi and Presidents of EU recalled their productive virtual engagements in form of India-EU Leaders’ meeting in form of EU+27 in May 2021 and 15th India EU Summit in July, 2020.
“During the meeting, leaders of India and EU reviewed India-EU cooperation covering political & security relations, trade & investment and economic cooperation as well as the Road Map 2025 agreed at the last India-EU Summit. They also discussed climate change, Covid-19 pandemic and contemporary global and regional developments of interest to both sides,” the statement read.
EU leaders also congratulated India for its excellent progress on vaccination, it added.

Soon as the PM’s cavalcade entered the premises, chants of PM’s name reverberated in the surroundings.
Excited to have a close glimpse of PM Modi and a chance to shake hands, Indian diaspora members travelled overnight to have this opportunity of meeting the PM in the foreign land.
PM Modi after paying floral tribute to Gandhi met the Indian disapora members waiting to have a quick word with the leader.
“In Rome, I had the opportunity to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi, whose ideals give courage and inspiration to millions globally,” PM Modi tweeted after paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi.
A yoga guru, Hariom Kalia, along with his three students recited Shiv Stuti that brought smile to the PM’s face.
Hariom Kalia, who has been practising Yoga in Italy for more than 20 years told PM Modi that he hails from Nagpur.
PM Modi interacted with Kalia in Marathi. Also, responded in Gujarati to a woman who asked him as to how he is doing.

“I am very excited to see PM Modi. Overall he is rebranding India’s name, through the G20 summit our voice will be heard. We felt happy and delighted to get a chance to meet our beloved leader,” he said.
Satish Kumar Joshi, Convenor, Overseas Friends of BJP said that it is a great opportunity for both Italy and India to strengthen their relationship. “We are very proud. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday arrived in Rome to attend the crucial 16th G20 Summit that will take place over the weekend, during which the leaders of the group will discuss the global economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, sustainable development and climate change.
This is the first in-person G20 Summit since the outbreak of the global pandemic in early 2020.
The first day of the Summit will see deliberations on ‘Global Economy and Global Health’, while the second day will witness an address by the Prince of Wales on the topic of the role of private finance in the fight against climate change.
Also on the second day, world leaders will also deliberate on climate change and environment, sustainable development among other issues.

In a separate statement, he said that the Summit will “allow us to take stock of the current global situation and exchange ideas on how the G20 can be an engine for strengthening economic resilience and building back inclusively and sustainably from the pandemic”.
Upon his arrival in the Italian capital on Friday, the Prime Minister said in a tweet: “Landed in Rome to take part in the G20 Summit, an important forum to deliberate on key global issues. I also look forward to other programmes through this visit to Rome.”
Modi was received by senior officials of the Italian government and Ambassador of India in Rome, according to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
Modi’s visit to Rome and the Vatican City till October 31 comes at the invitation of his Italian counterpart Mario Draghi.
On the sidelines of the G20 Summit, Modi will also be meeting with leaders of other partner countries and review the progress in India’s bilateral relations with them.
In the Vatican, Modi will call on Pope Francis and meet Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

In a 22-minute address to the United Nations General Assembly on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi framed the idea of India’s power in the context of science, technology, culture and problem-solving capability at an “unparalleled” scale, reports Nikhila Natarajan
“When India grows, the world grows. When India reforms, the world transforms. The science and technology based innovations taking place in India can make a big contribution to the world. The scalability of our tech solutions and their cost-effectiveness are both unparalleled,” PM Modi said within minutes of his address.
Here are 10 highlights from Modi’s speech:
Aspiration: “The strength of our democracy is demonstrated by the fact that a little boy who at one time used to help his father at his tea stall at the railway station is today addressing the United Nations General Assembly for the fourth time, as the Prime Minister of India.”
Democracy: “I will soon have spent 20 years serving my countrymen as head of government. First, as the longest serving Chief Minister of Gujarat and then as the Prime Minister for the last seven years. And I am saying this to you from my own experience. Yes, democracy can deliver. Yes. Democracy has delivered.”

Noting that the danger of regressive thinking and extremism is increasing in the world, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that it is absolutely essential to ensure that Afghanistan territory is not used to spread terrorism and for terrorist activities.
“Today, the danger of regressive thinking and extremism is increasing in the world. In these circumstances, the whole world has to make science-based, rational and progressive thinking the basis of development,” PM Modi said while addressing the UNGA.
“It is absolutely essential to ensure that Afghanistan territory is not used to spread terrorism and for terrorist activities,” he added.
“Those who use terrorism as a political tool should know that terrorism is dangerous for them too,” PM Modi said, a day after India gave a strong response to Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan bringing up the Kashmir issue at the UNGA.

Come, make vaccines in India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited the global manufacturers of vaccines to come and make vaccines in India, stressing that the country’s “faith is to serve people”.
“Understanding its responsibility towards humanity, India started giving vaccines to the needy in the world. I, here, invite the global manufacturers of vaccines to come and make the vaccine in India,” PM Modi said.
He also announced that India has developed the first DNA vaccine, which can be given to people older than 12 years.
PM Modi stressed that despite having limited resources, “India is working aggressively towards vaccine development and manufacturing”.
PM Modi had arrived in Washington on Wednesday for a three-day visit to the country, his first beyond neighbourhood since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
On Friday, he participated in the Quad leaders summit and announced that India will make available 8 million doses of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine by the end of October under the Quad vaccine partnership.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his first-ever in-person meeting with US President Joe Biden raised a number of issues involving the Indian community in the US, including access for Indian professionals in the country and spoke about the H-1B visas, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla has said.
“He (PM Modi) spoke of the issue of getting access for Indian professionals to the United States. In that context he mentioned H-1B visa,” Shringla said while addressing reporters on Friday (local time).
“He (PM Modi) also spoke of the fact that many Indian professionals who work here (in the US) contribute to Social Security. The return of those contributions in the United States is something that affects the number of Indian workers,” Shringla said.

At the maiden in-person summit, the Quad leaders shared perspectives on the situation in Afghanistan, the challenges in Indo-Pacific and reaffirmed their commitment to work together to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said on Friday.
Speaking at a special briefing after the Quad leaders’ meeting, Shringla said that the leaders also discussed a common approach to emerging technologies, cybersecurity and addressing the challenge of climate change.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on Friday held the Quad leaders’ meeting. It was hosted by the US leader.
“It was the first in-person Quad summit that took place. The meeting enables leaders to share views on contemporary issues in the region,” he said.

Evolving a common approach to emerging technologies, cybersecurity and addressing the challenge of climate change was something that the leaders discussed,” he added.
The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, also known as the Quad, was first initiated in 2007 by then Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, with the goal of peace and security in the region.
In his opening remarks at the Quad leaders meeting, Prime Minister Modi said that Quad will work in the role of “force for global good” and asserted that the cooperation among four countries including India, the United States, Australia and Japan in the group will ensure peace and prosperity in Indo-pacific.
Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison asserted said that the Indo-Pacific should be free from coercion in accordance with international law and sovereign rights must be respected.
Yoshihide Suga during his opening remarks at the Quad summit expressed the importance of the first in-person Quad meeting and said that the meeting reflects strong ties among four nations, emphasising that Indo-Pacific should be open and free.
Pak involvement in terror
Pakistan’s role in Afghanistan and its involvement in terrorism were among the issues discussed in the Quad summit and Prime Minister Modi’s bilateral discussions, Foreign Secretary Shringla said.
Responding to a question on Pakistan’s support to terrorism during a press briefing here, Shringla said that Pakistan has really been in many senses instigator of some of the problems India is dealing with in our neighbourhood and beyond.
“Both in bilateral discussions and in Quad summit, there was a clear sense that more careful look, examination and monitoring Pakistan’s role in Afghanistan, Pakistan’s role on the issue of terrorism had to be kept and certainly whether it is Quad or other partners had to keep track to that factor, an important factor that sometimes gets overlooked when you see Pakistan projecting itself as a facilitator whether it has really been in many sense instigator of some of the problems we are dealing with in our neighbourhood and beyond,” he said.
India and the United States have expressed concern over Islamabad’s role in Afghanistan, said Shringla adding that the two sides underscored the importance of combating terrorism in Afghanistan.
“I think there was clear concern in that regard on Pakistan’s role in Afghanistan and their continuing for a certain approach that did not seem to be conducive to the international community expectations of what Afghanistan should be like,” he said.

During a press conference on Thursday, Shringla informed that US Vice President Kamala Harris has ‘suo moto’, referred to Pakistan’s role in terrorism and asked the country to stop supporting terror groups during the first-ever meeting with Indian PM Narendra Modi.
Harris acknowledged the presence of terror groups in Pakistan, said Shringla when asked whether the issue of Pakistan emboldening Taliban came up during the discussion between PM Modi and the US Vice President.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed a common international travelling protocol involving mutual recognition of the COVID-19 vaccination certificate at Quad leaders meeting, Foreign Secretary Shringla said on Friday, adding that the proposal was “well-received” by all leaders of Quad nations.
“PM Narendra Modi proposed a common international travelling protocol involving mutual recognition of the COVID19 vaccination certificate. It was well-received by all Quad leaders,” Shringla said, speaking at a special briefing.
