NWAMI event gives out important messages

NWAMI (Networking for World’s Awareness of Multicultural Integration) has marked International Integration Day and the first anniversary of the Centre for Commonwealth Research recently.

Judge Ray Singh CBE has chaired the entire event which began with the welcome message by Clwyd West MP Rt. Hon. David Jones. Mark Isherwood, the President of NWAMI spoke about NWAMI’s mission and how NWAMI could support Afghan and Iraqi refugees and asylum seekers to integrate into mainstream society.

Andy Dunbobbin, Police and Crime Commissioner of North Wales spoke on Hate Crime Awareness Week. Maria-Gabriele Doubles, Chairperson of NWAMI International Malta introduced Dr Kevin Sammut Henwood, Chief Forensic Psychologist, Ministry of Home Affairs who also spoke on Hate Crime. Rajan Nazran award-winning explorer has spoken on his experience of touring Commonwealth Countries.

Video of Professor Iwan Davies was played on the occasion, outlining the importance of Commonwealth Countries working in solidarity towards the welfare of displaced people such as Afghan refugees. Dr Sibani Roy, the Chair of NWAMI and the Centre for Commonwealth Research has presented an update on the centre including the research project titled South Asian, Slavery and Indenture.

A short snippet from Rabindranath Tagore’s film Kabuliwala, an Afghan Pashtun was played on the occasion. Muheed Jeeran, Human rights activist from Sri Lanka spoke on current issues, while Martin Daws and Marc Peter Spacey have recited poetry.

Tripti Megeri, the proposed Vice-Chair of NWAMI has then facilitated cultural activities including performances by Samyukta Megeri and Dr Ragasudha Vinjamuri. The event concluded with the Vote of Thanks rendered by Judge Singh. Amr Alwishah has rendered technical support.

NWAMI’s Big Debate captures the audience

President of NWAMI Mark Isherwood rendered welcome and a glowing tribute to Late HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh was paid. Founder of NWAMI Dr. Sibani Roy read out the letter to HM Queen.

Keynote speaker Rt Hon David Jones and Prof Iwan Davies through a video gave wonderful inputs on social integration, linguistic diversity and community cohesion.

Human Rights Activist Muheed Jeeran joined from Sri Lanka. Judge Ray Singh CBE, Hywel Williams representing Rt. Hon. Liz Saville Roberts, Chairperson of NWAMI Malta Maria-Gabriele Doublesin and Leanne Georgiades, Secretary-General have all given their wonderful inputs on multiculturalism in the Commonwealth and how it can be harnessed.

Director of NWAMI England heading the Cultural Wing Ragasudha Vinjamuri presented a development plan in brief highlighting how cultural immersion and cultural education lead to greater understanding, mutual respect and cooperation, also eventually mitigating hate crime.

This was followed by the Big Debate on Commonwealth Issues and Q and A. Amr Alwishah hosted the event and has overseen the technicalities.
