Leaders Targeted: Missile Scare in Odesa

The strike resulted in the loss of five lives, with numerous others sustaining injuries…reports Asian Lite News

A Russian missile struck close to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis while they were visiting the Black Sea port city of Odesa on Wednesday, CNN reported.

The shocking incident unfolded with the group feeling the impact of the strike and witnessing a disconcerting “mushroom cloud” of smoke, placing the location of the explosion merely 500 meters from the convoy.

The strike resulted in the loss of five lives, with numerous others sustaining injuries, as reported by Dmytro Pletenchuk, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Navy, however, both Zelenskyy and Mitsotakis emerged unscathed despite the proximity of the missile explosion, according to CNN.

Zelenskyy, known for his daring trips to the front lines and hosting numerous world leaders amid the ongoing conflict with Russia, faced what could be considered one of his closest calls yet.

Expressing the intensity of the situation, Zelenskyy, who was close enough to witness and hear the strike, emphasised the indiscriminate nature of the attacks.

“We saw this strike today. You can see who we are dealing with; they don’t care where they strike,” he declared solemnly from Odesa. The gravity of the situation was underscored by Mitsotakis, the leader of a NATO member state, acknowledging the dangers inherent in such visits and the potential global repercussions of the escalating conflict.

Reflecting on the near-miss, Zelenskyy called for a robust air defence system to safeguard against future attacks. “We need to defend ourselves first and foremost. The best way to do that is with an air defence system,” he asserted, emphasising the urgency of bolstering the nation’s defences.

Mitsotakis shared his account of the incident, recounting a tour of the beleaguered southern city provided by Zelenskyy. The city, ravaged by months of Russian strikes, bore witness to yet another reminder of the ongoing war.

“Shortly after, as we were getting into our cars, we heard a big explosion,” Mitsotakis stated, acknowledging the stark reality that war isn’t confined to the front lines but impacts innocent civilians daily, as reported by CNN.

Strategically located at the mouth of the Danube River, Odesa holds crucial importance for Ukraine’s grain exports, a target that Russia has persistently sought to disrupt since the onset of its invasion. Additionally, Odesa serves as the main base for Ukraine’s navy, making it a focal point in the conflict.

The Russian Defence Ministry confirmed the missile strike at 11:40 am (Moscow time), targeting a hangar in the industrial port district where preparations for the combat use of unmanned boats were underway.

While Russia’s intensified strikes on the region have raised concerns, Saturday’s drone attack on an apartment block in Odesa resulted in the tragic loss of 12 lives, including five children. Zelenskyy, in response to these incidents, emphasised the critical need for reinforcing the country’s air defences, urging the international community to provide additional support.

As the situation escalated, the White House seized on the opportunity to press for urgent military assistance to Ukraine. With President Joe Biden’s USD60 billion aid request stalled, a National Security Council spokesperson highlighted the strike as another stark reminder of Russia’s relentless attacks, urging House Speaker Mike Johnson to expedite a vote on the aid package.

European Council President Charles Michel condemned the strike as a manifestation of Russia’s “cowardly tactics,” asserting that they were “below even the Kremlin’s playbook.” Michel, who himself experienced the impact of Russian aggression in Odesa back in May 2022, emphasised the gravity of the situation, calling for a united front against Russia’s belligerence, as reported by CNN. Russia targets Ukraine’s Odesa port

Ukraine’s Operational Command in the south said Russia hit the territory where one of the ports lie, destroying hangars with grain and agricultural machinery….reports Asian Lite News

Russian forces launched a drone attack and damaged a port on the Danube River in Ukraine’s southern Odesa region overnight, CNN reported on Wednesday citing a Ukrainian official.

In the Telegram, head of the Odesa regional military administration Oleh Kiper said, “The main target is port and grain infrastructure in the south of the region” on the Danube.

He further stated that no casualties were reported.

Ukraine’s Operational Command in the south said Russia hit the territory where one of the ports lie, destroying hangars with grain and agricultural machinery.

Ukraine’s Air Force on Wednesday said that it had destroyed 13 Shahed drones over Odesa and the neighbouring Mykolaiv region.

Meanwhile, Ukraine claimed that its forces have recaptured the village of Urozhaine in the eastern Donetsk region, where fierce battles have taken place in recent days, reported CNN.

“Ukrainian defence forces took control of Urozhaine,” and are consolidating their positions, Andrii Kovaliov, spokesperson for the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said on national television Wednesday morning.

Urozhaine, located about 100 kilometres southwest of Russian-occupied Donetsk city, lies near the village of Staromaiorske, which Ukrainian soldiers recaptured about two weeks ago.

“Urozhaine was liberated,” Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar said on Telegram.

Last week also, on Sunday, Russia attacked Ukraine where a warship fired warning shots at a cargo ship, which Moscow claimed to be headed to Kyiv, in the south-western Black Sea, CNN reported citing the Russian Defense Ministry.

Russia said the warship fired warning shots when the captain of the Palau-flagged dry cargo ship failed to respond to a request to stop for an inspection.“The Russian warship opened warning fire from automatic small arms fire to forcefully stop the vessel,” the statement said.

The ministry claimed that the ship, named Sukra Okan, was headed to the Ukrainian port of Izmail. Marine traffic websites currently show the cargo vessel’s destination as the Romanian port of Sulina which is close to Izmail. Kyiv did not immediately comment on whether or not the ship was headed to a Ukrainian port, as per CNN.

“In order to inspect the bulk cargo ship, a Ka-29 helicopter with a group of Russian servicemen was hoisted from the patrol ship Vasily Bykov,” the ministry said. “Following radio conversations, the ship stopped its course and the boarding team landed on the bulk cargo ship,” the statement said. Russian drone strikes damages port infrastructure in Odesa

As of 5:30 am local time, there were no reports of casualties, according to Kiper, though he added that the military command will provide the final data and results of combat work…reports Asian Lite News

The port and industrial infrastructure of the Odesa region were damaged after Kyiv met with a barrage of drone attacks in the early hours of Wednesday, CNN reported citing the head of the Ukrainian regional military administration, Oleh Kiper.

This comes after both Russia and Ukraine accused each other of carrying cross-border attacks on Tuesday. “At night, the enemy directed attack UAVs to the south of the Odesa region. As a result of the attack, fires broke out at the facilities of the port and industrial infrastructure of the region, and a grain elevator was damaged. All response teams are at the scene,” Kiper posted on Telegram.

As of 5:30 am local time, there were no reports of casualties, according to Kiper, though he added that the military command will provide the final data and results of combat work.

Meanwhile, the strikes come soon after Ukraine shot down 10 drones over Kyiv early Wednesday, CNN reported.

Serhiy Popko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, confirmed about shooting down 10 drones over Kyiv, in a Telegram post early Wednesday.

Initial information indicates that Russian forces used Shahed barrage munitions in the barrage of attacks, Popko said.

“Drone groups approached Kyiv simultaneously from several directions. However, the air defence forces detected and destroyed all aerial targets – over 10 UAVs – in a timely manner,” CNN quoted Popko as saying.

He said debris from the drones has fallen in the districts of Solomianskyi, Holosiivskyi, and Sviatoshynskyi in Kyiv and that some non-residential buildings and road surfaces were damaged, but no serious damage or fires.

Kiper had also warned of possible drone attacks on the Odesa region, and asked the people to take shelter while its air defenses were at work, CNN reported citing a Telegram post.

Earlier on Tuesday, Russia alleged that Ukraine again attempted a drone strike in Moscow targeting the “exact same building” that was hit on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Kyiv accused Russia of shelling a medical facility in the southern port city of Kherson, killing a doctor and wounding a nurse.

Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, have suggested that these attacks are meant to shatter any remaining sense of calm in the Russian capital.

“Moscow is rapidly getting used to a full-fledged war,” CNN quoted Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Zelensky, as saying,

Last month, Russian missiles badly damaged a historic Orthodox cathedral in the southern Ukrainian port city of Odesa. The Odesa strikes killed at least one person and injured several others, CNN reported citing Ukrainian officials. The attacks also destroyed other historic buildings, Ukraine’s culture ministry said.
