Om Birla eyes a hattrick in Kota

Kota, one of the 25 Lok Sabha constituencies in Rajasthan will go to polls on Friday in the second phase of General elections.

Bharatiya Janata Party for the third time in a row has fielded Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla from Kota, who had previously registered victories in 2019 and 2014 Lok Sabha polls. He is up against Congress’ Prahlad Gunjal, a former BJP leader.

Gunjal is a former MLA from Kota-North and represented the Assembly from 2013 to 2018. He quit the BJP after losing to Congress’ Shanti Dhariwal in the 2023 Rajasthan Assembly elections. He was runner-up in the Kota North Assembly. He is the former MLA from Kota-North (2013-2018),

Kota constituency comprises eight assemblies — Keshoraipatan, Bundi, Pipalda, Sangod, Kota North, Kota South, Ladpura and Ramganj Mandi.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Om Birla defeated Congress candidate Ramnarain Meena by a significant margin of 279,677 votes. Birla got 59.1 per cent of the vote share.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Birla defeated Congress’ Ijyaraj Singh with a margin of 2,00,782 votes. Later, Ijyaraj Singh joined the BJP.

Om Birla has expressed confidence in his victory in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

“The people of Kota have always loved me and it is because of this that I am contesting the Lok Sabha elections for the third time and this time also the people of the area will make me win with a good majority,” he said.

The last day of campaigning for phase 2 of the Lok Sabha polls is April 24.

Voting for Lok Sabha polls in Rajasthan is being held in two phases. Polling for 12 seats was held in the first phase on April 19 and voting for the remaining 13 seats will be contested in the second phase on April 26.

The counting will take place on June 4.

In 2019, the BJP registered a sweeping victory, winning 24 out of 25 seats. Rashtriya Loktrantrik Party’s Hanuman Beniwal also won a seat.

The first phase of voting for 102 parliamentary constituencies spread over 21 states and Union Territories was held on Friday with a voter turnout of nearly 64 per cent. (ANI)

Om Birla: UNSC needs urgent reforms

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in his address at the General Debate during the 146th Assembly of Inter-Parliamentary Union in Bahrain’s Manama said that the United Nations Security Council needs “urgent reforms”. UNSC reforms cannot be stopped forever and the reforms are on India’s global agenda, he added.

Birla was sharing his thoughts on the subject “Promoting peaceful co-existence and inclusive societies: Fight against intolerance” at the General Debate during the 146th Assembly of Inter-Parliamentary Union where he was addressing the presidents of the parliaments of 140 countries on the topic of promoting peaceful coexistence and inclusive society and struggled against intolerance, on Sunday. Lok Sabha Speaker said, “Building a peaceful, prosperous and inclusive global order is the need of the hour. For this, it is necessary that international institutions should be based on equality and justice.” There is an “Urgent need to reform the UN Security Council,” he stated firmly.

He said that there is a wide agreement among the countries of the world too that important matters have to be taken seriously and honestly.

“UNSC reform process cannot be stopped forever, this reform is an important part of our future global agenda,” he said while addressing presidents of 140 Countries.

He said that India has gained recognition as the Mother of Democracy in the whole world because of its rich pluralistic culture and the largest constitution.

“Fraternity, peace, freedom, and socio-economic justice are the basis of our constitution,” he added.

“India follows the culture of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam and it is also the birthplace of many religions, people of different religions live together here. That is the basis of our existence,” LOk Sabha Speaker added while mentioning the culture of Unity in Diversity.

He said that the constitution of India promotes equality and justice and that every India is proud of India’s diverse culture.

Om Birla further said that the multi-party ideology is the biggest strength of the Indian democracy. He also said that India’s democracy has become prosperous and firm in 75 years of Independence.

“More than 900 million voters are listed in India, increasing voter turnout in every election is a sign of people’s faith in democracy,” he made clear.

“The hopes and expectations of the public are expressed through the people’s representatives in the Parliament,” he said after a week after Congress MP Rahul Gandhi alleged that democracy in India is dead and that members of Parliament are not allowed to speak inside the Parliament.

Om Birla further reiterated his point saying, “Freedom of opinion and opinion to all the people’s representatives is given in the Lok Sabha. Parliament has brought socio-economic changes in the lives of people in 75 years.”

He mentioned that the developmental work is being done in India with the spirit of inclusiveness, “Sab ka sath, Sabka Vikas, Sab ka Sath Sabka ka Prayas” is our motto, he added.

He further stated that global issues should be resolved peacefully in the changing scenario.

The Lok Sabha speaker also said that the Indian Parliament did meaningful discussions on topics like climate change, gender equality, and COVID. (ANI)

Om Birla visits BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi

The parliamentary delegation led by Speaker Om Birla, participated in a prayer session and placed a brick within the construction site, reports Asian Lite News

Om Birla, speaker of India’s lower house of the Parliament along with a 17-member delegation on Wednesday visited BAPS Hindu Mandir, which is under construction, in Abu Dhabi.

Federal National Council member Ayesha Mohammed Al Mulla accompanied the group, who were received and greeted in a traditional way by religious leader Pujya Brahmavihari Swami, the Khaleej Times reported.

Birla is on a first-ever official visit as the Speaker of the Lower House of the Indian Parliament to the UAE.

“Feeling blessed at the Swaminarayan temple being built in Abu Dhabi. In three water streams of the temple, devotees will get virtuous benefit of confluence of Ganga, Yamuna & Saraswati rivers. It was proud moment to see artisans of Rajasthan who are giving shape to these streams,” Birla tweeted.

“Also offered ‘seva’ in construction work of Swaminarayan Mandir. During the visit, interacted with the workers, many of whom were from Bharatpur and Alwar regions of Rajasthan,” he added.

Apart from an overview of the construction work, Brahmavihari Swami also gave a vision of what to expect once the temple is completed, Khaleej Times reported.

Sushil Kumar Modi, who is part of the delegation, said: “Among all the temples across the globe this temple is iconic and historic and marks its position in a different league.”

The delegation participated in a prayer session and placed a brick within the construction site, it was reported.

Brahmavihari Swami added that the purpose of the traditional temple is unification of minds and hearts.

“BAPS Hindu Mandir has brought not just India and the UAE closer together but brought countries, cultures, communities, and religions closer together. We thank the leaders of both the UAE and India for their support and encouragement in creating this spiritual oasis for global harmony,” Swami was quoted as saying.

Later in the day, Consulate General of India in Dubai Dr Aman Puri welcomed Speaker Om Birla.

“Hon’ble @loksabhaspeaker, Om Birla and the accompanying delegation welcomed by CG Dr. Aman Puri to Dubai today,” tweeted Consulate General of India, Dubai.

This is the first-ever visit under the bilateral exchange of parliamentary delegations from either side, read the official release of the Lok Sabha Secretariat.

The delegation includes Sushil Kumar Modi, Dr Fauzia Tahseen Ahmed Khan, Dr MK Vishnu Prasad, P Ravindhranath, Shankar Lalwani and Dr Sujay Radhakrishna Vikhepatil, all Members of Parliament and Utpal Kumar Singh, Secretary-General, Lok Sabha.
