Amarinder likely to meet Sonia amid infighting in Punjab

Harish Rawat, had said that it’s a good sign that Rahul Gandhi has met the former-cricketer-turned politician, adding that the issue is likely to be resolved around next week…reports Asian Lite News.

Amid escalating infighting in Punjab Congress, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh is likely to meet Sonia Gandhi and apprise his side of the story to the interim Congress President.

The proposed meeting comes in the backdrop of the suggestions made by the Congress high command to the Punjab government and changes in the state unit of the party, days after disgruntled Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu met Rahul Gandhi.

After Sidhu met Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Rahul Gandhi separately last week, there is a speculation that Priyanka Gandhi has suggested Sidhu’s name as the Punjab Congress chief. However, Amarinder Singh and some of the other factions in the party are not accepting this formula.

Sources said that Punjab leaders may accept him as the working president, but not as a full-fledged state unit chief as the Chief Minister is keen on having a non-Sikh face as the state Congress President.

The Punjab in-charge for Congress, Harish Rawat, had said that it’s a good sign that Rahul Gandhi has met the former-cricketer-turned politician, adding that the issue is likely to be resolved around next week.

Meanwhile, Amarinder Singh had called the MLAs supporting him for lunch in Chandigarh the day Sidhu left for Delhi and is believed to have discussed the future strategy.

The move had reportedly upset the party high command, which viewed it as a show of strength, especially after the panel formed by the Congress to look into the Punjab issue said that there is no question of removing the Chief Minister.

India’s oldest train Punjab Mail turns 110

She steamed out of Bombay’s Ballard Pier Mole station — which was the hub of the erstwhile Great Indian Peninsular Railways (GIPR), that later became the CR…reports Asian Lite News.

The oldest running long-distance train of the Indian Railways, Punjab Mail, connecting Mumbai-Firozpur — originally linking Bombay with Peshawar (now in Pakistan) — turned 110 on Tuesday, Central Railway officials said.

The Punjab Limited as she was called then, is a little over 16 years older than its more glamorous counterpart Frontier Mail, though its origins are rather vague.

She steamed out of Bombay’s Ballard Pier Mole station — which was the hub of the erstwhile Great Indian Peninsular Railways (GIPR), that later became the CR.

Based on a Cost Estimate paper of 1911 and a complaint by an irate passenger in Oct. 2012 about “the later arrival of the train by a few minutes at Delhi” station, the CR concluded that the Punjab Mail made her maiden run on June 1, 1912.

To begin with, there were the P&O steamers bringing in the mail, and excited officers of the British Raj along with their spouses, coming to their first postings in colonial India after a 13-day long sea voyage from Southampton to Mumbai Port.

Since the British officials held a combined ticket both for the sea voyage to Bombay and then onward inland journey by train to their place of postings, after disembarking they would simply board one of the trains from here bound for Delhi, Calcutta or Madras.

The Punjab Limited used to run on fixed mail days from Bombay to Peshawar covering 2,496 kms in around 47 hours along the Great Indian Peninsular route, via Itarsi, Agra, Delhi and Lahore.

At that time, it had only 3 passenger cars with a total capacity of 96 travellers, three for postal goods and mail, and was the fastest running train in the British India.

The passenger coaches were all corridor cars in first class, dual berth compartments, and well-appointed with lavatories, bathrooms, a restaurant car, a compartment for the luggage and servants of the British officers.

Later, from 1914, the Punjab Limited started originating and terminating at the Bombay VT Station, now Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Mumbai and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Today, the journey time of Punjab Mail, hauled by electric engines, has come down significantly, covering the 1,930 kms between Mumbai CSMT-Firozpur Cantt in 34 hrs 15 mins.

Compared to the original 6 cars of the Punjab Limited, Punjab Mail now has 9 air-conditioned coaches, 6 sleeper coaches, 5 general second class coaches, a pantry and a generator van.

By mid-1930s, it also started catering to the Indians on the move in Third class cars, it got the first air-conditioned coach in 1945 , from May 1976, it was hauled by diesel engines, and by 1980s with electric engines as a large part of the trunk routes on the IR network got electrified.

From December 2020, the Punjab Mail started its journey with the German-designed Alstom LHB GmbH’s Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches which give more safety and a pleasant travel experience to the passengers.

Moderna not to send vaccines directly to Punjab

Garg said the reply was received from Moderna only in which the company refused to deal with the state government…reports Asian Lite News.

Citing its policy, Covid-19 vaccine manufacturer Moderna has refused to send the vaccine direct to Punjab, state nodal officer for vaccination Vikas Garg said on Sunday.

He said all vaccine manufacturers were approached for direct purchase of vaccines, including Sputnik V, Pfizer, Modern, and Johnson & Johnson.

Garg said the reply was received from Moderna only in which the company refused to deal with the state government.

The state was forced to stop vaccination for Phase 1 and 2 categories in the last three days because of non-availability.

All efforts would be made for procurement of vaccines to meet the acute shortage in the state, which had received less than 44 lakh vaccine doses from the Centre, the official said.

As per the Centre allocation for Phase 3 (18-44 age group), the state government has been able to buy only 4.2 lakh vaccine doses, including 66,000 received on Saturday.

A total of 3.65 lakh have already been used, leaving only 64,000 for use as of now, added Garg.

Tributes to Sri Guru Arjun Dev Ji

India pays tribute to Guru Arjun Dev Ji on his Martyrdom Day.Guru Arjun Dev was born in April 1563 in Goindval, India. His father was to become Guru Ramdas and his mother’s name was Mata Bhani. Arjan Dev’s maternal grandfather was Guru Amardas and his father Guru Ramdas were respectively the third and fourth Gurus of the Sikhs. In 1581, he became the fifth Guru of the Sikhs after the death of his father.

Guru Arjun laid the foundation of the Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) in Amritsar. He also designed the four doors in a gurdwara – the Sikh places of worship – proclaiming that “My faith is for the people of all castes and all creeds from whichever direction they come and to whichever direction they bow.”

He also declared that all Sikhs should donate a tenth of their earnings to charity.

His enduring legacy to the Sikh faith was to compile all of the past Gurus’ writings into one book – the holy scripture: the Guru Granth Sahib.

Guru Arjun Dev included the compositions of both Hindu and Muslim saints which he considered consistent with the teachings of Sikhism and the Gurus.

In 1606, the Muslim Mughal Emperor Jahangir imposed a fine of 200,000 rupees and demanded that Guru Arjun erase some of the hymns in the text that he found offensive. According to the Sikh tradition, the Guru refused to remove the lines and pay the fine, which led to his torture and execution.
