Samsung’s Enhanced AI Robot Makes Waves at CES 2024

Several tech companies took the opportunity to unveil their cutting-edge innovations, offering a glimpse into the future of AI-driven robotics….reports Asian Lite News

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has always been a stage for ground-breaking technological innovations and this year was no exception. AI-powered robots took the centrestage at ‘CES 2024’, showcasing the incredible strides made in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI).

Several tech companies took the opportunity to unveil their cutting-edge innovations, offering a glimpse into the future of AI-driven robotics.

Samsung unveiled a new version of its AI home companion robot called “Ballie”. It was first introduced at CES 2020 and has been revamped with new advanced features to help users intelligently navigate their lives.

Ballie acts as a personal home assistant, autonomously driving around the home to complete various tasks. By connecting to and managing home appliances, this robot can provide a helping hand to users in many situations — continually learning from users’ patterns and habits to provide smarter, more personalised services.

It can send video updates of pets or loved ones to users’ devices when they’re away from home. It can set the mood for any home activity whether users are exercising, working or relaxing.

LG’s “smart home AI agent” — a two-wheeled robot — boasts robotic, AI and multi-modal technologies, enabling it to move, learn, comprehend and engage in complex conversations.

This robot can verbally interact with users and express emotions through movements made possible by its articulated leg joints. Moreover, the use of multi-modal AI technology enables this robot to understand context and intentions as well as actively communicate with users. It can also connect with and control smart home appliances and household internet of things (IoT) devices.

This AI robot can even act as a pet monitor and security guard, providing users with the ability to see and care for their pets remotely and sending alerts if any unusual activity is detected.

For people who have dogs as pets, ORo, the companion robot may prove useful to them.

Ogmen Robotics launched ‘Oro’, an intelligent companion robot for dogs. According to the company, ORo stands out not just as a robot but also as a companion and guardian designed to enhance pet well-being, strengthen family bonds, and simplify pet care.

ORo stimulates pets physically and emotionally through automatic, playful activities, promoting a vibrant, healthy environment. It also detects and responds to signs of anxiety by playing soothing music.

This robot also features ‘Remote Connectivity’ by which owners can interact and engage with their pets from any location. It also records and tracks important health documents such as licensing, vaccination histories, and medical records, ensuring pet health is always a priority.

The next one is a delivery robot — MOBINN — from RcLab.

This delivery robot is capable of providing delivery services ‘anywhere’, ‘anytime’. Due to the independently developed wheel system, it is possible to overcome various obstacles, such as stairs or bumps, with only wheels and without worrying about.

According to the company, this delivery robot can deliver coffee safely without spilling a single cup of coffee to customers. The LiDAR-based mapping system used by MOBINN enables it to operate regardless of the outside environment, whether it is nighttime or even raining and snowing.

Now comes the robot that provides cleaning solutions for homes.

Robot vacuum maker Roborock has unveiled a new flagship vacuum and mop called the ‘S8 MaxV Ultra’ that includes a voice assistant, robot arm and video calling functionality.

Users can control this robot without using another device — simply speak to it and tell it what to clean.

The built-in camera enables AI-powered obstacle avoidance, as well as the option to call or have the owner call in remotely.

Samsung Vows to Keep Tech Crown

For its mobile, home appliances and software division, a customer-first strategy was emphasised, with a focus on performance and quality…reports Asian Lite News

South Korean tech behemoth Samsung Electronics on Tuesday announced its strategic priorities for the new year, emphasising the strengthening of the company’s competitiveness through technological supremacy and adaptability to future changes.

In a joint New Year’s message, co-CEO and Vice Chairman Han Jong-hee and co-CEO and President Kyung Kye-hyun outlined the strategic focus on core values, including the pursuit of “super-gap technologies,” to maintain a competitive edge, reports Yonhap news agency.

“We will prioritise strengthening our fundamental competitiveness, including the core values that have guided Samsung Electronics, such as super-gap technologies,” they said.

They urged its signature chipmaking business, a leader in semiconductor technology for the past five decades, to further enhance its position by improving and widening the technological cap with its competitors.

For its mobile, home appliances and software division, a customer-first strategy was emphasised, with a focus on performance and quality.

The two leaders also called for proactive measures to address future changes, such as artificial intelligence (AI), eco-friendly practices and lifestyle innovation, calling for a need for a fundamental shift in thinking and the application of generative AI to work processes.

“We should revolutionise the way we work and our device experience by applying generative AI to work,” said the message. “Moving from the passive green response of the past, we should pull off a fundamental shift in thinking and discover the green products of the future.”

Samsung Electronics posted a cumulative 191.2 trillion won ($147.2 billion) in sales for the three quarters of 2023, down 17.5 per cent from a year ago.

Its operating profit tumbled 90.4 percent on-year to 3.74 trillion won over the cited period due largely to waning semiconductor demand. Its chip division reported its first financial loss in 14 years in the first quarter.

As the world’s largest memory chip maker and smartphone provider, Samsung Electronics is expected to release its fourth-quarter earnings report later this month.

Samsung Explores New Opportunities

The unit was “created to explore new business opportunities beyond its existing operations,..reports Asian Lite News

Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest maker of memory chips and smartphones, said on Monday it has established a unit tasked with exploring new business opportunities, as part of the electronics giant’s annual reshuffle of its top-level executives.

The unit, called the “Future Business Planning Division,” will be led by longtime Samsung executive Jun Young-hyun, currently vice chairman of Samsung SDI Co., a display unit of Samsung Group, the company said in a statement.

The annual reshuffle saw two co-CEOs of Samsung Electronics — Han Jong-hee and Kyung Kye-hyun — retain their posts, in an apparent move to stabilize the company’s leadership, about a year after Chairman Lee Jae-yong took the helm, reports Yonhap news agency.

The unit was “created to explore new business opportunities beyond its existing operations,” Samsung Electronics said in the statement.

Under the reshuffle, two vice presidents were also promoted.

Yong Seok-woo, who has served in various capacities at the company’s display division, was promoted to a president and will be in charge of the display division.

Kim Won-kyong, a former diplomat who joined Samsung Electronics in 2012, was promoted to a president and will head the company’s division on global public affairs.

Samsung’s latest reshuffle was smaller in scope compared with past ones. Last year, a total of seven executives were promoted to president, including Lee Young-hee, the company’s first-ever female president.

The latest reshuffle is also seen as a sign that Samsung is moving to tap more younger talents for top-level executive positions, with Yong becoming the first-ever company president born in the 1970s.

The reshuffle came as a prolonged global economic downturn and a struggling semiconductor industry have cast a cloud over Samsung Electronics’ quarterly performance.

In the first and second quarters of this year, Samsung Electronics posted 640.2 billion won ($491 million) and 668.5 billion won in operating profit, respectively, marking the lowest quarterly earnings since the first quarter of 2009.

Samsung’s Eco Odyssey

Samsung has made some progress on the sustainability front to keep its word…reports Asian Lite News

With the one year anniversary of Samsung’s release of its mid- to long-term environmental management strategy nearing, the South Korean tech giant has said it was on the path toward achieving net zero companywide by 2050.

In September last year, Samsung unveiled the New Environmental Strategy, detailing its road map to achieve net zero at the Device eXperience (DX) division, covering its mobile and home appliances business, by 2030 and at the company level, including its chip Device Solutions (DS) division, by 2050.

Samsung has made some progress on the sustainability front to keep its word, its recent report showed.

The company’s use of renewable energy rose 65 percent last year to reach 8,704 gigawatt hours, according to Samsung’s 2023 sustainability report in June, reports Yonhap news agency.

The DX division reported the highest transition rate of 93 per cent, while the rate stood at 23 per cent at the DS division and at 31 percent companywide.

In 2020, Samsung completed its transition to 100 per cent renewable energy in the United States, Europe and China. Last year, the company did so at all of DX division’s business sites in South Korea, and manufacturing sites in Vietnam, India and Brazil, according to the report.

Samsung, one of the world’s biggest manufacturers of electronic devices and semiconductors, also said it had reduced 10.16 million tons of carbon dioxide compared with business-as-usual, up 59 percent from the previous year.

Use of recycled and recyclable materials had increased, with 98,826 tons of plastic with recycled resin being used last year at a utilization rate of 14 percent and collecting 600,502 tons of electronic waste.

Samsung planned to expand the use of renewable resins in all its plastic products by 50 per cent by 2030 and 100 per cent by 2050.

Last year, Samsung joined the RE100, a global corporate initiative aimed at shifting to 100 percent renewable electricity. It vowed to increase the energy efficiency of its seven biggest-selling products, ranging from smartphones and washers to air conditioners, by 30 percent.

Apple Threatens Samsung’s Global Dominance

Samsung suffered a 12.4 per cent (quarter-on-quarter) downturn, while Apple marked a 21.2 per cent dip from the preceding quarter….reports Asian Lite News

With the upcoming iPhone 15 series outperforming market expectations, Apple has a good chance of unseating Samsung from its long-held position as the global market leader, a new report has said.

According to the market intelligence company TrendForce, in the second quarter (Q2) of 2023, Samsung continued to lead in production rankings, delivering 53.9 million units, while Apple’s second quarter was the weakest in terms of production, delivering 42 million units.

However, Samsung suffered a 12.4 per cent (quarter-on-quarter) downturn, while Apple marked a 21.2 per cent dip from the preceding quarter.

Moreover, the report said that global smartphone production has faced back-to-back quarterly declines.

“After plunging nearly 20 per cent in 1Q23, second-quarter numbers dwindled further by approximately 6.6 per cent, settling at a modest 272 million units. The first half of 2023 clocked in at a mere 522 million units — marking a 13.3 per cent (year-on-year) decline and setting a ten-year low for both individual quarters and the first half of the year combined,” the researchers said.

“Demand in consumer markets such as China, Europe, and North America has not shown a significant rebound as we move into the second half of the year. Even if economic indicators in the Indian market improve, it is still difficult to reverse the global decline in smartphone production,” it added.

Further, the researchers predicted that the smartphone market may undergo another shift in Q2 this year due to poor global economic conditions, and production for the second half may consequently be further reduced.

Looking ahead to 2024, the current economic outlook is not optimistic, as per the report.

The researchers forecasted a 2 to 3 per cent annual increase in global production, depending on regional economic trends.

Samsung’s New Foldable Gen Makes Waves

With the new foldables, Samsung aims to reach over 50 per cent market share in India in the super-premium ($1,000 and above) segment…reports Asian Lite News

Buoyed by the response from across the country, Samsung on Wednesday said it received 1.5 lakh pre-orders for its newly-launched, ‘make in India’ fifth generation of foldable devices in the three-week period (July 27-August 17) which is 1.5 times more than last year.

Aditya Babbar, Senior Director, Mobile Business, Samsung India, told IANS that not just urban centres but the response for Galaxy Fold5 and Flip5 from tier 2, 3 and even tier 4 cities has been overwhelming this year, signalling that the Galaxy premium devices are becoming mainstream in the country.

“Numbers speak the truth. The response from ‘Bharat’ for our ultra-premium devices, thanks to the 24-month EMI scheme, has been amazing. We are growing faster pan-India in the premium and ultra-premium segment than ever before,” Babbar emphasised.

Faster availability in tier 2, 3 and even 4 cities, the unique 24-month EMI scheme and a growing set of aspirational Indian user base have helped Samsung further cement its position in the ultra-premium segment in the country.

With the new foldables, Samsung aims to reach over 50 per cent market share in India in the super-premium ($1,000 and above) segment.

“The interesting trend we see this year is a rush of new, first-time buyers for flagship foldables. For Fold5, they generally belong to the 25-44 age group, mostly male consumers and tech enthusiasts. On the other hand, Flip5 is attracting users in the less than 35 age group, and the demand for Flip is equal from both the genders,” Babbar told IANS.

“We are determined to further grow our market share in the upcoming festive season, and consolidate our leadership riding on the Galaxy flagship devices,” Babbar added.

To make foldables mainstream, Samsung increased its distribution footprint, ensuring Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 are available across 10,000 stores in India, up from 6,000 stores through which the previous generation of foldables were sold.

“We are excited to see the overwhelming response for our fifth generation foldable smartphones in India. We are confident that the robust demand for Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 among India’s tech-savvy consumers will help us consolidate our leadership in the country,” said Raju Pullan, Senior Vice President, Mobile Business, Samsung India.

Customers can buy Galaxy Z Flip5 (256 GB) for a net effective price of Rs 85,999, while Galaxy Z Fold5 (256 GB) is available at Rs 138,999 for a limited period in the country.

Foldables have come of age and Samsung, the pioneer in the space, has been infusing meaningful innovations in its devices. With Galaxy Z Fold 5, the South Korean giant has added powerful multitasking tools along with a sleek inner screen experience and a new hinge that folds totally flat.

The latest device is 2.4mm thinner than Z Fold 4 that measured 15.8mm when folded. In comparison, the Z Fold 5 uses a brand-new hinge to fold completely flat, measuring 13.4mm thick.

This may sound little but when you hold the 253-gram Galaxy Z Fold 5 in your hands, the difference is stark from the previous generation.

With an innovative form factor enhanced by new Flex Hinge for a balanced design, and pro-grade camera capabilities with unique FlexCam, Galaxy Z Fold 5 justifies its price, delivering top-notch foldable experiences.

Let us unfold the device further for its Indian fans (Samsung secured record pre-bookings for its fifth-generation foldable devices in India, with more than 100,000 consumers pre-booking Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 in the first 28 hours).

Let us stay with the design. The 7.6-inch main screen offers Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity Flex Display (2176 x 1812) at 374ppi and a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate.
The peak brightness has increased by more than 30 per cent, up to 1750 nits, for an optimal viewing experience outdoors even under bright sunlight (a point where all other rival foldables struggle currently).

The 6.2-inch cover screen with HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X Display (2316 x 904) at 402ppi and a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate is stunning.

Now open up the Z Fold 5 and see the difference from the previous-generation device.

Multitasking is just seamless.

The device offers everyday productivity through a robust, big screen experience, evolving from Multi Window and App Continuity to a wide range of features including Taskbar, drag and drop and optimisation of third-party apps.

S Pen Fold Edition has also been fine-tuned to deliver a superior writing experience on Galaxy Z Fold5. It makes real-time annotating and ideation easy while being able to fit more comfortably in the pocket.

The improved Taskbar enables dynamic productivity by allowing us to quickly switch between frequently used apps. Now up to four recent apps are at the ready for more efficient working.

Newly enhanced two-handed drag and drop can also ramp up productivity when moving content between apps and screens.

Simply touch and hold an image in Samsung Gallery with one finger and use another finger to open the Samsung Notes app to drag-and-drop the image.

With a hidden pop-up, an app can continue running in the background, allowing users to watch video content in full screen and chat with friends in a floating pop-up on the side of the screen.

These features and tools come together to deliver powerful productivity on a large screen and enable users to complete important tasks from anywhere.

On a hot summer day, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset powering the Galaxy Fold 5 didn’t get warm too much while gaming.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform enhances graphics and uses AI to enable dynamic gaming and multi-game functionality.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 comfortably handled long gaming sessions with its advanced cooling system that dissipated heat more intelligently for less lag and no drop in performance.

On the battery front, the 4,400mAh (typical) dual battery offered a long-duration performance during the day. The battery can easily last a full day of heavy use across work, streaming and some gaming frontiers.

In line with Samsung’s vision for sustainability, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 incorporates a wider variety of recycled materials — pre-consumer recycled glass and aluminium as well as post-consumer recycled plastics sourced from discarded fishing nets, water barrels and PET bottles.

Even the packaging is made from 100 per cent recycled material.

On the camera front, Fold 5 offers the same triple rear camera system (50-MP main sensor, a 10-MP 3x telephoto, and a 12-MP ultrawide sensor) that worked pretty OK in normal day conditions. There is a 4-MP under-display camera on the inside that’s good for video calling.

According to TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics, the company is revolutionising the mobile industry with foldables by setting the standard and continually refining the experience.

Spending time with the device actually proves that Fold5 has taken a leap among foldables.

Galaxy Z Fold5 is available from Rs 154,999 (12GB/256 GB). Customers pre-booking Galaxy Z Fold5 will get benefits worth Rs 23,000.

The new device can be pre-booked across all leading online and offline retail stores, and will go on sale from August 18. With the new foldables, Samsung aims to reach over 50 per cent market share in the country in the super-premium ($1,000 and above) segment.

Conclusion: One thing is certain: If you are using Galaxy Fold 4, the latest iteration is a solid upgrade and if you wish to own one for the first time, entering the super-premium segment (if you have a budget or plans the EMI route) is a really good choice.

With strong performance and an optimised battery powered by the latest processor, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 series transforms what is possible with a smartphone — open or closed.

Samsung dominates memory chip market

Samsung Electronics kept the largest share of 42.8 per cent in the DRAM market, unchanged from the previous quarter…reports Asian Lite News

Samsung Electronics retained its top spot in the global memory chip market in the first quarter (Q1) despite lacklustre earnings amid the chip glut, a report showed on Sunday.

SK hynix Inc, on the other hand, was pushed back to third place from number 2 compared with a year earlier, due largely to the output cut that came before Samsung, according to the market tracker Omdia.

Samsung Electronics kept the largest share of 42.8 per cent in the DRAM market, unchanged from the previous quarter, reports Yonhap News Agency.

Samsung’s DRAM revenue amounted to $4.01 billion in the January-March period, a 61.2 per cent fall from the previous year’s $10.35 billion, Omdia said. Compared with three months earlier, the revenue sank 25.2 per cent.

The DRAM market share of SK hynix stood at 24.7 per cent in Q1, down 2.3 percentage points from the previous quarter.

SK hynix was dragged down by one spot to third place, and Micron Technology Inc took over the second spot with 27.2 per cent.

SK hynix, which makes most of its profit from selling memory chips, reported an operating loss of $2.5 billion for the three-month period, swinging to the red from a year earlier.

“SK hynix had preemptively begun to reduce production as DRAM prices fell sharply in the first quarter, which led to a decrease in shipments and a temporary decline in the market share,” an industry source said.

Qualcomm heralds new 5G mobile era with Snapdragon 888 chip.

Samsung Electronics also maintained the top place in the NAND flash market, with the percentage inching up 0.4 percentage point to 34.3 per cent despite the sharp fall in the quarterly revenue in the segment.

Its NAND flash revenue more than halved to $2.99 billion in the first quarter, compared with $6.33 billion from a year earlier.

SK hynix placed fourth with 16.8 per cent in the first-quarter NAND flash market, down from the third spot from three months earlier.

Analysts are increasingly betting on the theory that the two tech giants are bottoming out, citing the second-quarter losses that have narrowed down from the previous quarter.

Samsung’s Device Solutions unit in charge of semiconductors reported 4.36 trillion won ($3.33 billion) in operating loss for the April-June period, narrowing from 4.58 trillion won from the previous quarter.

SK hynix posted 2.88 trillion won in the second-quarter operating loss, compared with the operating loss of 3.4 trillion won in the first quarter.

Samsung and SK hynix said in their recent earnings calls that they plan to focus on advanced high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and double data rate 5 (DDR5) memory chips that are in higher demand.

The DDR5 is the next generation of PC main memory with higher speed and bigger memory.

An HBM chip is suited for high-performance computing systems, such as artificial intelligence-driven data analytics and state-of-the-art graphics systems.
