UAE leaders offer Eid Al Adha prayers

With strict Covid-19 safety measures, the residents and royals of United Arab Emirates offered Eid Al Adha prayers at mosques and musallahs across the UAE on Tuesday morning.

The rulers and Crown Princes offered the prayers with dignitaries and officials in their respective Emirates, it was reported.

In Abu Dhabi,Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, performed the Eid Al Adha prayer at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.

He was joined by a congregation of worshippers and a number of Sheikhs, ministers and senior state officials.

In his Eid sermon, preacher Dr. Omar Al Dharie, Executive Director of Islamic Affairs at the General Authority Of Islamic Affaires & Endowments, highlighted the religious significance of the Eid Al Adha and story of sacrifice and obedience of prophet Abraham and his son Ismael.

”It is a great day of sacrifice, giving, generosity, joy, mercy and communication with families and neighnours,” he said, urging members of the community to adhere to precautionary and preventive measures for their health safety.

Following the prayer, Sheikh Mohamed exchanged Eid greetings with well-wishers and then visited the tomb of late Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan and recited ‘Al Fatiha’ in prayer for his soul.

In Dubai,Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince, and Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, performed Eid Al Adha prayer at the Sheikh Rashid Mosque in Zabeel, Dubai.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation, along with several Sheikhs, citizens and residents also performed the prayer at the mosque.

In his speech during the prayers, Dr. Omar Mohammed Al Khateeb highlighted the importance of piety and obedience to the country’s leadership and adhering to the precautionary measures aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus pandemic and protecting the community.

In Ras Al Khaimah,Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, performed Eid Al Adha prayer at the Grand Eid Musalla.

Performing the prayer along with Sheikh Saud were H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince of Ras Al Khaimah, and a number of Sheikhs, top officials and members of the Arab and Islamic communities in Ras Al Khaimah.

In his Eid sermon, the imam said the Eid is an occasion of showing compassion, love, mercy, joy and respect between people, urging members of the public to adhere to precautionary measures due to the exceptional health circumstance the world are going through.

In Ajman, Sheikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Crown Prince of Ajman and Chairman of the Executive Council, offered Eid Al Adha prayers at Al Zaher Palace.

Earlier, Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ajman, has congratulated President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the occasion of Eid Al Adha.

He expressed his congratulations and well-wishes to President Sheikh Khalifa, the people of the UAE, and the Arab and Islamic nations on the auspicious occasion.

In Umm Al Qaiwain, Sheikh Saud bin Rashid Al Mu’alla, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Umm Al Qaiwain, performed Eid Al Adha prayer at Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Mu’alla Mosque in Umm Al Qaiwain.

Performing the prayer along with Sheikh Saud were Sheikh Rashid bin Saud bin Rashid Al Mu’alla, Crown Prince of Umm Al Qaiwain, and a number of Sheikhs, heads of government departments, top local officials and members of the Arab and Islamic communities in Umm Al Qaiwain.

In his Eid sermon, Sheikh Mohammed Ibrahim Humaid said: ”This day is a day of connection, charity and giving in which we reach our kinship and our neighbors, bring happiness to our families.” He urged members of the public to commit themselves to precautionary measures for their health safety.

Progress made in talks with Saudi: Iran

Iran has confirmed that it has started talks with Saudi Arabia in Iraq to defuse tensions between the two countries….reports Asian Lite News

Progress has been made in the recent talks between Iran and Saudi Arabia, the spokesman for the Tehran government Ali Rabiee said.

Issues have been discussed from a friendly and good-intention position in the recent talks between the two countries, and some progress has been made so far, Rabiee said on Tuesday during his weekly press conference.

“We understand that disputes may have complexities in some areas which require time to resolve. We will continue these talks to minimise differences,” Xinhua news agency quoted the spokesman as further saying.

Meanwhile, Saeed Khatibzadeh, spokesman for Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Iran has always welcomed dialogue to achieve results.

“Our view as per the negotiations with Saudi Arabia is positive,” Khatibzadeh said during his weekly press conference.

Iran has always wanted the countries of the region to maintain peace and security in the Gulf region, he noted.

Iran has confirmed that it has started talks with Saudi Arabia in Iraq to defuse tensions between the two countries.

Meanwhile, Iranian government has blamed Israel for a recent sabotage act against a nuclear facility near Karaj city.

“We have confirmed the sabotage, and we confirm it again. Of course, this action did not lead to human loss, and the damage on the equipment was insignificant,” government spokesman Ali Rabiee said during a press conference here on Tuesday.

“The roof of one of the sheds was punctured… This sabotage did not lead to damage to essential equipment,” spokesman said.

He said Israel “did this seeking to derail the nuclear talks and to send a signal that the world does not need to talk with Iran” over the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal.

On June 23, Iranian media reported a sabotage attempt on the nuclear facility near Karaj with no reference to the damage.

Iran confirms talks with Saudi

Iranian authorities have confirmed reports that direct talks had taken place with Saudi Arabia on Monday.

“There have been talks and they have been about bilateral and regional issues,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh told a press conference.

He said it was too early to talk about results, but said that “it is well known that we have always welcomed talks with the Saudis in any form and at any level”, reports dpa news agency.

Saudi and Iranian officials have met at least twice in Iraq in recent weeks, according to media reports.

Tehran had not previously confirmed the meetings but Iraqi President Barham Salih said his country had hosted several rounds of talks between the two countries’ representatives.

Sunni Saudi Arabia and Shia Iran view each other as arch-enemies and have been competing for decades for economic and political primacy in the region.

The two countries severed diplomatic relations in 2016 and are currently facing off in multiple proxy conflicts, including in Yemen.

Saudi Arabia has been leading a military alliance supporting the Yemeni government in its fight against the Iran-linked Houthi rebels.

However, Saudi and Iranian officials have softened their language recently, and said they are prepared for reconciliation.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman told state television that Riyadh seeks positive and special relations with Iran if Tehran ended negative behaviours.

Iran followed by saying it hoped for constructive dialogue to resolve differences between the countries, in a marked change of tone compared to past years.

Saudi Arabia backs India-Pakistan dialogue

However, a separate readout issued by the Saudi side on the meeting between Khan and the crown prince made no mention of India or the Kashmir issue, reports Asian Lite News

Saudi Arabia has welcomed the decision by India and Pakistan to observe a ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) and backed a dialogue between the South Asian rivals to address all outstanding issues, including the Kashmir dispute.

The kingdom’s position was articulated in a joint statement issued by Pakistan and Saudi Arabia late on Saturday after a meeting between Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and visiting Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan. It came against the backdrop of speculation about the role being played by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to foster dialogue between New Delhi and Islamabad.

Khan was on an official visit to Saudi Arabia from May 7 to 9. Pakistan Army chief Gen Qamar Bajwa too visited Saudi Arabia last week. Both Bajwa and Khan held meetings with the Saudi crown prince and the talks were seen as part of Pakistan’s efforts to normalise strained relations with Saudi Arabia.

The joint statement said the Saudi crown prince “welcomed the recent understanding reached between the military authorities of Pakistan and India regarding ceasefire at the Line of Control (LoC), which is based on a 2003 understanding between Pakistan and India”.

It added that Saudi Arabia and Pakistan “emphasised the importance of dialogue between Pakistan and India to resolve the outstanding issues between the two countries, especially Jammu and Kashmir dispute, to ensure peace and stability in the region”.

However, a separate readout issued by the Saudi side on the meeting between Khan and the crown prince made no mention of India or the Kashmir issue.

There was no immediate response from Indian officials to the joint statement.

There has been speculation about the role played by Saudi Arabia and the UAE to reduce tensions between India and Pakistan since the 2019 Pulwama suicide bombing, which triggered a tense military standoff.

The UAE envoy to the US, Yousef Al Otaiba, confirmed last month that his country played a role in bringing together India and Pakistan for talks aimed at calming tensions over the Kashmir issue and getting bilateral ties “back to a healthy level”. It is understood that senior Indian and Pakistani security officials have met in London and Dubai for secret talks in recent months.

The surprise decision by the Indian and Pakistani armies to recommit themselves to the 2003 ceasefire on the LoC from February 25 is seen as the outcome of these contacts.

During the Pakistani prime minister’s visit to Saudi Arabia, the two sides reviewed all aspects of bilateral cooperation and discussed regional and international issues. They agreed to intensify contacts and cooperation between government officials and the private sector, and the crown prince assured Khan of Saudi Arabia’s continued support for his vision to transform Pakistan into a modern welfare state.

Both sides also expressed satisfaction at cooperation in military and security ties, and agreed to augment collaboration to achieve mutually agreed goals, the joint statement said.

The two sides said an “inclusive, broad-based and comprehensive political settlement” is the only way forward in Afghanistan. They also signed several agreements on establishing a Saudi-Pakistan Supreme Coordination Council, combating illicit trafficking in narcotics and drugs and financing projects in energy, hydropower, infrastructure and transport and communication.

30% rise in Saudi Aramco’s Q1 net profit

Saudi Arabia’s oil giant Aramco said on Tuesday that its net profit increased by 30 per cent in the first quarter of 2021, due to higher oil prices and an improved economic environment amid the pandemic.

Its net income this quarter reached $21.7 billion compared to $16.7 billion in the same period last year, reports dpa news agency.

The company said it will distribute cash dividends totalling $18.8 billion, due in the second quarter.

“Given the positive signs for energy demand in 2021, there are more reasons to be optimistic that better days are coming. And while some headwinds still remain, we are well-positioned to meet the world’s growing energy needs as economies start to recover,” Aramco President and CEO Amin Nasser, said in a statement.

The results reflect a dramatic shift from last year due to the coronavirus pandemic and lower oil prices.

In 2020, Aramco said its net profit fell by nearly half of what it was in 2019.

Meanwhile, the Kingdom will lift the suspension on its citizens travelling abroad from 1:00 am on Monday, May 17, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

All citizens who have been vaccinated or have recovered from Covid-19 are eligible to travel,as well as those under 18.

This category will be subjected to home quarantine after returning to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for a period of (7) days, provided that a PCR test is taken at the end of the quarantine period, while persons under the age of (8) years are exempt from the PCR test. and this category is subject to amendment according to the instructions of the Ministry of Health,” according to SPA.

A Saudi Ministry of Interior official source stressed the need for everyone to adhere to the precautionary and preventive measures, and not to be complacent in applying health requirements, such as social distancing, wearing a mask, and continuously disinfecting hands.

Iran ready for talks with Saudi Arabia

Iran has always been ready for talks “at any level and in any form” with its neighbours, including Saudi Arabia, to settle issues, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said here.

“Changes in tone and discourse help a lot to reduce tensions,” Xinhua news agency quoted Khatibzadeh as saying at a weekly press briefing on Monday.

He added that the talks will lead to serious practical results only if coupled with a change in behaviour.

Dialogues among the countries of the region and between Iran and Saudi Arabia will result in more peace, stability and progress, the spokesman noted.

Earlier, the Iranian Foreign Ministry had dismissed a report that Tehran is preparing to free five prisoners in exchange for access to bank accounts that have long been frozen due to diplomatic disputes with the UK and the US.

“As a rule, we don’t confirm reports and statements by so-called informed sources,” dpa news agency quoted Ministry spokesperson Saeid Khatibzadeh as saying.

The comments were prompted by a report by Lebanese broadcaster Al-Mayadeen, which reported on Sunday that Iran is poised to free five people, all with dual citizenship in either the UK or the US, for access to funds that have long been frozen because of ongoing diplomatic disputes about Iran’s nuclear and missile programmes.

The report, which the authors said was based on information from informed sources, was cited in Iranian media several times at the weekend.

Although Al-Mayadeen did not name the prisoners, it is believed that the four Americans refer to three business executives and one environmental activist incarcerated in Iran.

According to the report, their freedom would give access to 7 billion dollars currently frozen.

The fifth person is allegedly Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who also has British citizenship and was recently released after five years in detention.

But she was quickly sentenced again to another year in jail for participating in a demonstration 12 years ago.

According to the report, the UK was prepared to free up 400 million pounds out of frozen accounts in exchange for Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s freedom.

Khatibzadeh said there was no link between the frozen funds and any talks about releasing prisoners.

However, he did say there are routine conversations with the US about the status of the prisoners.

London and Washington have already denied the report.

The two countries have routinely accused Iran of using the prisoners as leverage in an effort to regain access to the frozen funds, a charge Iran regularly denies.

Pakistan’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia has returned to the country over complaints by the Pakistani community in the kingdom.

The government has issued orders to six other officers of the embassy in Riyadh to return. Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan had also ordered an inquiry and his directions were being implemented, Dawn reported citing the Foreign Office statement on Thursday.

“A high-powered inquiry committee will look into the matter,” it added.

The statement further said the six officers who were issued recall orders worked in the diplomatic, community welfare, and consular wings of the embassy.

“The government of Pakistan attaches high importance to the welfare of overseas Pakistanis. There is zero tolerance, whatsoever, for any lapse in public service delivery,” the statement said, adding that Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi himself oversaw the working of all diplomatic missions, particularly with regards to the services being provided to the Pakistani community.

A statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office said that the Prime Minister, “being cognisant of the complaints submitted to him by Diaspora in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and while expressing his displeasure on the performance, attitude and behaviour of officers posted in Pakistan’s Embassy/ Consulates in Saudi Arabia, has taken a serious view of the situation.”

The statement added that the premier had tasked the Prime Minister’s Inspection Commission to inquire into the matter and submit its report within 15 days.

Earlier today, Imran Khan said he had heard that the Pakistani embassy in Saudi Arabia did “not take care of the labour class” working in the Gulf country, Dawn reported.

Earlier this week, two diplomats from the Pakistan Embassy in South Korea were caught shoplifting at a store in Seoul. They were caught stealing items worth 11,000 won (USD 10) and 1,900 won (USD 1.70), respectively, at the same store in Itaewon, Yongsan District. (ANI)

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that it welcomed signs of reconciliation coming from Saudi Arabia and hoped to put a quick end to their political differences.

Iran and Saudi Arabia are both important states in the Islamic world whose cooperation can lead to peace and stability in the region, the spokesman said, according to the ISNA news agency, DPA reported.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman struck conciliatory tones this week regarding Iran. “In the end, Iran is a neighbouring country. All we hope for is to have a good and special relationship with Iran,” he said on state television.

“We want it to prosper and grow as we have Saudi interests in Iran, and they have Iranian interests in Saudi Arabia.”

Sunni Saudi Arabia considers Shiite Iran an archenemy. The two now settle their decades-old political and economic rivalry primarily through proxy wars in Yemen, Syria and other states.

Recently, however, there have been signs of detente.

The crown prince’s softer tone comes after reports earlier this month that Saudi and Iranian officials held talks in Baghdad.

Saudi ships 80 metric tons of liquid oxygen to India

Saudi Arabia shipped 80 metric tons of liquid oxygen to India as the country is perilously running low on supplies due to a recent surge in coronavirus cases.

The urgent supply shipment is being undertaken in coordination with India’s Adani group and Linde company.

India’s number of coronavirus cases surged by 349,691 in the past 24 hours, the fourth straight day of record peaks, and hospitals in Delhi and across the country are turning away patients after running out of medical oxygen and beds.

“Embassy of India is proud to partner with Adani group and M/s Linde in shipping much needed 80MT liquid oxygen to India. Our heartfelt thanks to the Ministry of Health Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for all their help, support and cooperation,” India’s embassy based in Riyad said in a tweet.

India also began airlifting tanks containing oxygen from Singapore to meet the growing demand for life-saving gas.

It also diverted oxygen supplies from industrial uses to hospitals, but this move did not meet the increase in demand, Middle East daily Asharq Al-Awsat reported on Sunday.

India logged a record of 3,49,691 new coronavirus infections in a day on Sunday, taking its total tally of COVID-19 cases to 1,69,60,172. The death toll increased to 1,92,311 with a record 2,767 daily new fatalities, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

India is struggling with a second wave of the pandemic with more than 3,00,000 daily new coronavirus cases being reported in the past few days, and hospitals in several states are reeling under a shortage of medical oxygen and beds.

To combat the growing demand for oxygen in the country, India has reached out to various countries to procure containers and oxygen cylinders under operation ‘Oxygen Maitri’.

The Indian Air Force on Saturday brought four cryogenic tanks, to be used for transporting oxygen, from Singapore. The containers were airlifted from Singapore by C17 heavy-lift aircraft of the IAF.

The aircraft “with 4 cryogenic containers for storage of liquid O2 from Singapore landed at Panagarh airbase” in West Bengal on Saturday, a home ministry spokesperson tweeted.

850 firms join Made in Saudi initiative

Companies who want to be part of the program can apply online to check eligibility, reports Asian Lite News.

More than 850 companies have applied to join the ‘“Made in Saudi” program.  Faisal Al-Bedah, the secretary-general of the Saudi Export Development Authority, said the program’s objectives of increasing domestic consumption and market share of domestic goods and services. The program will also look to increase Saudi non-oil exports in priority export markets, and enhance attractiveness of the Saudi industrial sector for domestic and foreign investment.

He said the “Made in Saudi” program promoted national identity, boosted the contribution of the private sector to the economy, launched the capabilities of promising non-oil sectors by developing their exports, and enabled the creation of teams through small and medium-sized enterprises and micro-enterprises.

Companies who want to be part of the program can apply online, with an initial verification done through a dedicated website to check companies’ eligibility.

Products should be grown, extracted or produced in Saudi Arabia and fall under one of the listed industries: Construction, textiles, pharmaceuticals and medical, processed foods, or fresh produce.

“Made in Saudi” will play a role in achieving the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 reform plan by supporting Saudi products and directing purchasing power toward local products and services, leading to the private sector’s contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) to 65 percent and raising the proportion of non-oil exports in the total non-oil GDP to about 50 percent by 2030.

Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources Bandar bin Ibrahim Al-Khorayef, who is also the authority’s chairman, launched the initiative under the patronage of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

“The program aims to help local businesses grow by encouraging local consumers to buy more locally made products and helping businesses to increase their exports to priority markets,” said Al-Khorayef. “Under one unified brand, the ‘Made in Saudi’ program will bring significant opportunities for businesses to expand their reach and promote their products domestically and globally.”

Move to create 1.3 million mining, industrial jobs

Earlier, Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources Bandar Alkhorayef said the initiative will create 1.3 million jobs in the mining and industrials sectors for the citizens.

“We currently have 10,000 factories in the Kingdom, with investments of 1.1 trillion ($293 billion), and the Kingdom’s products reach more than 178 countries around the world,” Alkhorayef said.

A strategic plan to develop the consumer products industry through localization is in place, he said.

Earlier, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman launched Shareek, an SR12 trillion program to boost the role of the private sector in diversifying the economy.

Under the program, private sector businesses will be helped to invest SR5 trillion between now and 2030, along with SR3 trillion from the country’s sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), and SR4 trillion as part of a new national investment strategy.
