India to host BRICS summit on Green Hydrogen initiatives

The Ministry of Power noted that hydrogen was poised to play a vital role and build on the rapid scale-up of renewable resources across the globe as the world rapidly moves to decarbonise the entire energy system…reports Asian Lite News.

India will host a summit on Green Hydrogen initiatives where BRICS nations will share their initiatives and discuss how to take it to the next level.

The online event will be held via a video conference on June 22-23.

To be anchored by global energy major National Thermal Power Corporaition (NTPC), the virtual summit will bring the best brains, policy makers and major stakeholders from the BRICS nations. They will deliberate and discuss at length the future of hydrogen in the energy mix, the Ministry of Power said on Sunday.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6TAFhy6nwY

On Day 1, the representatives from each country would be sharing respective initiatives undertaken by their countries on utilization of hydrogen and their future plans. The speakers will also share the relevance of different technologies developed on hydrogen and its priorities for their country, the ministry said.

Day 2 will witness panel discussions on ideas integrating hydrogen in overall energy policy framework by different countries. The discussions to entail financing options for the emerging green hydrogen technologies and the institutional support needed to create the requisite ecosystem for the technology to flourish.

The Ministry of Power noted that hydrogen was poised to play a vital role and build on the rapid scale-up of renewable resources across the globe as the world rapidly moves to decarbonise the entire energy system.

Hydrogen when produced by electrolysis using renewable energy is known as Green Hydrogen which has no carbon footprint.

This gives hydrogen the edge over other fuels to unlock various avenues of green usage. However, challenges lie in terms of technology, efficiency, financial viability and scaling up which the summit will aim to address, the ministry explained in a press release.

Green Hydrogen has innumerable applications. Green Chemicals like ammonia and methanol can directly be utilized in existing applications like fertilizers, mobility, power, chemicals, shipping etc. Green Hydrogen blending up to 10% may be adopted in CGD networks to gain widespread acceptance.

Further scaling up with greening of hard to abate sectors (like steel and cement) through hydrogen needs to be explored. Many countries have brought out their strategies and defined targets and roadmaps based on their resources and strengths, the ministry said. (INN)

Taliban negotiators visit Pakistan to ‘consult leadership’

The Taliban’s delegation visited Pakistan to seek “guidance” from Pakistani intelligence agencies….reports Asian Lite News

Ahead of Turkey summit on Afghanistan’s peace, Taliban negotiators have left for Pakistan from Doha to consult and seek guidance from their “leadership”, Tolonews reports.

The Taliban’s delegation visited Pakistan to seek “guidance” from Pakistani intelligence agencies.

“Whenever there is a stalemate in the talks in Qatar, they (Taliban) say that we are going to consult our elders, in reality, ‘elders’ means that ‘we are going to seek suggestions from the ISI and the (Pakistani) army,'” said Afghanistan’s First Vice President Amrullah Saleh.

This comes as the Taliban blamed the extension of the US presence in Afghanistan as the main cause for their non-participation in the Turkey summit which has been postponed from April 24 to May 4.

Intra-Afghan talks in Doha.

Last week, Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani had said the announcement of the withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan will require that Pakistan make a decision on its Afghan policy — whether to opt for cooperation or enmity with its neighbour.

Ghani said, “After two years, we are fully prepared for the day and we have a comprehensive plan for their withdrawal.” He added that “Today, it is a day of decision for Pakistan”.

The US has announced that all its troops will be out of Afghanistan by September 11.

Our troops capable of fighting Taliban’

Afghanistan’s military has the capacity to fight the Taliban unaided after the withdrawal of US-led foreign troops as it has demonstrated throughout last year, Afghan National Security Council spokesperson Rahmatullah Andar told Sputnik.

“Since last year, Afghan security and defense forces have been conducting 96 percent of operations on their own self. Afghan troops have no problem fighting with the Taliban,” Andar said, noting, however, that Afghanistan would continue receiving assistance from abroad after the pullout of foreign troops.

The official described the Afghan forces as being in “active defensive potion” and stated that the fighting was particularly intense in areas where the Taliban have access to the illicit economy and drug trade. Andar also accused the Taliban of having members of al-Qaeda (banned in Russia) and other terrorist groups in their ranks.

There are also increasing calls to developed countries to step up financial support for climate action in developing countries, in particular for adaptation.
