Pinarayi, Stalin call for ‘truly federal India’

The event was a seminar on Centre-State relations and the key speakers were Vijayan, Stalin and Thomas, reports Asian Lite News

For the CPI-M, its Party Congress is its ultimate event and on Saturday evening, its ongoing 23rd edition in Kerala hit a peak with the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and more so with that of “estranged” Congress leader and former Union Minister K.V.Thomas, seated to the right of none other than Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Chief Minister Stalin has called for a collective of states “to fight, to resist” the central government and “create a truly federal India”, media reported.

The event was a seminar on Centre-State relations and the key speakers were Vijayan, Stalin and Thomas.

Thomas, whose attendance could see him being booted out of the Congress as the top leadership and the state unit of the party had warned him against going, received a tumultuous welcome. The CPI-M saw his presence as a moral victory over the Congress, their principal opposition in the state, as Thomas arrived at the hometown of state Congress President K. Sudhakaran, who, on Friday only, remarked that he prays that Thomas won’t turn up.

Stalin, who had landed at the Kannur airport in the afternoon, was received by the top leadership of the CPI-M and when he arrived at the venue, it was to big applause and so was the case each time his name was called out.

Vijayan, in his inaugural address, said in today’s context. the topic of the seminar, Centre -State relations is very important and so is the presence of Stalin.

“But above that is the presence of K.V.Thomas. We invited him as a Congress leader and even now he is one. There were talks that his nose would be cut out if he attends. He is present here as a Congress leader. What will happen tomorrow is a different matter and I am sure nothing is going to happen. All I will say is ‘let us not speculate’,” he said.

Vijayan also took the opportunity to take a dig at the 18 Congress-led UDF MPs from Kerala, saying that “they are doing nothing in the Lok Sabha to put pressure on the Centre to fight for the genuine needs of our state”.

Stalin heaped praised on Vijayan and said he is a person with a difference when compared to other Chief Ministers and it was his responsibility to attend the seminar and decided to attend the moment Vijayan invited him.

KV Thomas, whose attendance could see him being booted out of the Congress as the top leadership and the state unit of the party had warned him against going, received a tumultuous welcome.

“It was a Communist government which was the first in the country to be ousted, while two times in Tamil Nadu, the DMK government was ousted,” he said.

Stalin has called for the formation of a collective of states “to face and overcome these active efforts of disruption”, onmanorama reported.

“We must form a collective of the chief ministers of South India, and then form a collective of chief ministers of all the states of India, separately.

“The Constitution of India needs to be amended to bestow more rights to the states. To make this happen, we must come together, united, looking beyond the boundaries of politics,” Stalin was quoted as saying.

The Tamil Nadu leader said that victory was possible only if “like-minded political parties came together”.

“That will ensure the sustenance of this country, the ideals of social justice, equality, and secularism.

“I hereby request every party to initiate action to ensure such a victory. Let us fight for state autonomy. Let us create a truly federal India. Red salute, comrades,” the news report quoted Stalin as saying.

When Thomas’s name was called out to speak, it was greeted with a huge cheer.

“I stand here with a lot of pride and with great happiness. When I see this huge audience, I feel I have made the right decision to come and I wish my colleagues in the Congress party also will understand. I am for development and there should be no opposition to it,” he said.

It remains to be seen how the Congress reacts.

TN High court upholds 7.5% reservation for govt school students

Terming the judgement as historic, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin speaking in the Assembly said the law was brought based on proper statistics and discussions….reports Asian Lite News

The Madras High Court on Thursday upheld Tamil Nadu government’s law reserving 7.5 per cent seats for students of government schools in medical college admissions.

The court said the law is valid and the government has the power to provide reservation.

The court also said the reservation should be reviewed after five years.

The case was filed on behalf of the students of government aided schools.

Terming the judgement as historic, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin speaking in the Assembly said the law was brought based on proper statistics and discussions.

Stalin said this is the third victory for the DMK government in 10 months for social justice.

The reservation for government school students was brought in by the AIADMK government.

Stalin also said the DMK government had passed a law to provide 7.5 per cent reservation in engineering/agriculture/fisheries/veterinary courses in government colleges, universities and leading self financed colleges.

AIADMK, BJP walk out over tax hike

The opposition AIADMK and its allies including the BJP walked out of the Tamil Nadu assembly on Wednesday demanding the withdrawal of the hike in property tax. Party joint coordinator and former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) led the AIADMK legislators in walking out of the assembly.

While walking out of the house, EPS said,” In the last two years, people have suffered a lot due to the pandemic and have lost their livelihood. Even in such a situation, the government has increased the property tax which has come as a bolt from the blue for ordinary people.”

He said that the ruling party has reneged on its 487th poll promise that it would not increase the property tax until the people overcame the impact of Covid-19.

The leaders of the DMK allies like the Congress and the VCK however in their speech said that the property tax hike was inevitable but said that the government could bring it down to bring solace to the people who were suffering from the hike in fuel prices.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin while speaking in the house appealed to the opposition parties not to play politics over the hike in rates of property taxes and ruled out the possibility of any withdrawal from the hike announced.

He called upon the political parties to set aside their differences with the government and to work for the development of Tamil Nadu.

Stalin was responding to the calling attention motion in the Tamil Nadu assembly on Wednesday. He said that his government has not increased the property tax willingly and added that he was admitting it.

He said, “There is a compulsion hor the government to tackle the situation when the civic bodies are in dire need of funds”.

He added that there were several development schemes that were getting affected due to the fund crunch and hence the government has increased property tax without affecting the poor and the middle class.

Stalin reaching out to non-BJP CMs for national front against BJP

This was a direct attack on Banerjee and hence she seems to have taken a back seat and pushed Stalin to take the lead for the coordination…reports Asian Lite News

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK leader M.K. Stalin will coordinate with non-BJP Chief Ministers and other opposition leaders, including from the Congress and the CPM, to form a national platform against the saffron party.

Stalin has already floated the All-India Federation of Social Justice, in which he invited even his political rival and AIADMK leader, O. Panneerselvam.

It may be recalled that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had requested Stalin to take the charge in coordinating with non-BJP CMs in the country as well as non-BJP political parties, including the Congress and the CPM.

Senior DMK leader and state Water Works Minister S. Duraimurugan told IANS, “Our Chief Minister is an icon of Dravidian struggle and he has excellent rapport with almost all the national leaders. He has already commenced speaking to these leaders for a national platform against the BJP and after the urban local body polls are over on February 19, the momentum of this coordination will increase and a national platform against the BJP will soon emerge.”

Subramanian Ramaswamy, former professor of political science at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi, who is also a political observer, told IANS, “Stalin is the apt choice for such coordination as he has good rapport with the Congress, CPM, CPI, and other political parties.

“With regard to Mamata Banerjee, both the Congress and the CPM are skeptical about her. But being a seasoned politician, Banerjee knows well that if she allows Stalin to take the centre stage, things would happen, and for the larger interest, she seems to have decided to play the second fiddle.”

Former General Secretary of CPI-M, Prakash Karat, who is also the party’s politburo member, said in a statement that the broader alliance or rather a broader coordination of opposition political parties will take place only with the presence of the Congress and excluding Congress is not a good move.

This was a direct attack on Banerjee and hence she seems to have taken a back seat and pushed Stalin to take the lead for the coordination.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, according to sources close to him, has already telephoned all the senior leaders, including the Chief Ministers of Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Maharashtra. Sources also said that Stalin has spoken to senior leaders, including Sharad Pawar, Farooq Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti and others.

However, the list of opposition leaders does not include Aravind Kejriwal for the time being.

The DRDO chief also said that this was the apt time for the Indian industries to take advantage of the latest policies of the government and join hands with DRDO to deliver defence systems and technologies to the Indian defence forces…reports Asian Lite News

The small industries in Tamil Nadu will be taking advantage of more self-reliance in defence production announced by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during the 2022 budget speech.

Sitharaman, while presenting the budget on February 1 had said 68 per cent of capital procurement will be earmarked for the defence industry in the 2022-23 Budget which is 10 per cent higher than the 2021-22 Budget.

She said: “Defence Research and Industry will be opened up for industry, startups, and academia with 25 per cent of defence R&D Budget earmarked for it. Private industries will be encouraged to take up design and development of military platforms and equipment in collaboration with Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and other organisations through Special Purpose Vehicles (SPV) models.”

Several companies in Coimbatore, Hosur, and Tiruchi are already in the defence production and research sector in Tamil Nadu and are in association with the DRDO. The proposed defence corridor is also expected to create an ecosystem where industries will be encouraged to take up more defence projects.

Tamil Nadu has over 120 aerospace manufacturing companies and 700 suppliers to various Defence Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) already and with the new announcement in budget all these companies will get sizeable work for supplying components to major productions in the defence sector.

G. Satheesh Reddy, Chairman DRDO and secretary department of defence (R&D) in a statement, said: “The DRDO is planning an R&D centre in Tamil Nadu defence corridor where industries will be groomed by our scientists. An SPV will be formed soon which will lead to industries partnering DRDO in all stages of the supply chain from design, development, testing, production, marketing, and exports.”

The DRDO chief also said that this was the apt time for the Indian industries to take advantage of the latest policies of the government and join hands with DRDO to deliver defence systems and technologies to the Indian defence forces.

Other than small industries in Tamil Nadu spread across the industrial hubs of Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Hosur, big companies in the state like L&T and Ashok Leyland are already production partners of the DRDO.

The DRDO, according to insiders, will soon be grooming and developing several Tamil Nadu companies, both small and big, to advance design and development capabilities.

The main battle tank Arjun Mk-1A was developed by Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment in Chennai in collaboration with other DRDO labs.

Modi launches 11 new medical colleges across Tamil Nadu

The Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Infrastructure Mission aims to address the critical gaps in health infrastructure and health research especially at District level, he explained…reports Asian Lite News

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated 11 new medical colleges in Tamil Nadu and assured the state of another Rs 3,000 crore funding as part of his vision to develop quality and affordable healthcare in the country.

PM Modi also inaugurated the new building of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil. “Thus, we are furthering the health of our society and making the connect with our culture stronger,” he explained.

“In the coming years I envision India as being the go-to destination for quality and affordable care. India has everything needed to be a hub for medical tourism. I say this based on the skills of our doctors. I urge the medical fraternity to look at tele-medicine as well,” he said in a video conference.

PM addressing at the inauguration of 11 new medical colleges and a new campus of Central Institute of Classical Tamil (CICT) in Tamil Nadu, through video conferencing, in New Delhi on January 12, 2022.

The Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Infrastructure Mission aims to address the critical gaps in health infrastructure and health research especially at District level, he explained.

A support of over Rs 3,000 crore would be provided to Tamil Nadu in the next five years. This will help in establishing Urban Health and Wellness Centres, District Public Health labs and Critical Care Blocks across the state. The benefits of this for the people of Tamil Nadu will be immense, he added.

PM Modi said that medical education was one of the most desired streams for studies and the problem of shortage of doctors in India was well-known. But there were not enough efforts to address this problem. Perhaps vested interests also did not let previous governments take the right decisions, he added.

“In 2014, our country had 387 medical colleges. In last seven years only, this number has gone up to 596 medical colleges. This is an increase of 54 percent. In 2014, our country had around 82,000 medical Under Graduate and Post Graduate seats. In last seven years, this number has gone up to around 1, 48,000 seats. This is an increase of about 80 percent,” he pointed out.

PM Modi also said that in 2014, there were only seven AIIMS in the country. But after 2014, the number of AIIMS approved has increased to 22. At the same time, various reforms have been under-taken to make the medical education sector more transparent. Regulations for setting up medical colleges and hospitals have been liberalised without compromising on quality.

He also pointed out that this was the first time that 11 medical colleges were being inaugurated at one stroke located in any one State.

“Just few days back, I had inaugurated 9 medical colleges/ at the same time in Uttar Pradesh. So, I am getting to break my own record,” he quipped.

PM Modi said it is important to address regional imbalances. In that light, it is good to see two of the medical colleges inaugurated are in the aspirational districts of Ramanathapuram and Virudhunagar. These are districts where the development needs require special attention. One college is in the remote hilly district of the Nilgiris, he added.

The Prime Minister also said that the new building of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil will make Tamil studies more popular. It will also give a wider canvas to students and researchers. I am told that the Central Institute of Classical Tamil intends to translate Tirukkural in various Indian and foreign languages.

With the huge volume of crops destroyed by heavy rains, the vegetable supply to neighbouring states like Kerala has also been jeopardised…reports Asian Lite News.

The Tamil Nadu farmers who were looking to recoup losses after the second wave of the Covid pandemic, are now staring at an uncertain future.

Heavy showers for the past few days in Tamil Nadu have inundated around 55,000 hectares of land, of which, crops in 3,500 hectares have been destroyed.

Revenue and Disaster Management Minister KKSSR Ramachandran said: “Around 3500 hectares of crop has been damaged and this will affect us. However, we have to study in detail to arrive at the total loss and how it will impact the farmers. Compensation and other factors would be decided in the coming days once the rain and winds settle down.”

With the huge volume of crops destroyed by heavy rains, the vegetable supply to neighbouring states like Kerala has also been jeopardised.

Sources from Tamil Nadu farmers association said: “There is a dip in supply of vegetables to Kerala and according to a rough estimate the supply has been affected by more than 60 per cent. How these losses can be recovered is a million-dollar question.”

The Tamil Nadu farmers who were looking to recoup losses after the second wave of the Covid pandemic, are now staring at an uncertain future.

Secretary of vegetable farmers association in Chengalpattu, Selva Ganapathy, said: “The farmers of Tamil Nadu were slowly looking up after the pandemic but now the sudden rains have thrashed all our expectations. We are now staring at huge debts and don’t know when we will get some meager compensation. The Revenue Minister has already stated that the government would assess the damage to the crops after the rains settle down and we are expecting that the government would compensate us in a better manner.”

Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin has announced that his government would support and take care of all the people who have been impacted by the torrential rain.

75,000 police personnel ready

A total of 75,000 police personnel drawn from local police, armed reserve, Tamil Nadu Special Police and Home Guards gave been kept ready in the wake of heavy rains lashing Chennai and adjoining districts, Tamil Nadu Director General of Police C. Sylendra Babu said on Thursday.

250 special teams of police have been deployed along with the 350 personnel of the Coastal security group with rescue boats, he said in a statement.

Several areas in Chennai including Kolathur, the constituency of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin are inundated. People from low-lying areas have been evacuated.

State Disaster Response Force with rescue boats, wood cutting machines, and drilling machines have also been deployed.

Meanwhile, almost the entire South Chennai area has reported power failure mostly due to cable fault and feeder trappings, a statement from the The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) said. In several places, Tangedco has shut down the service as a precautionary measure.

Tripping in the main feeder from the Perungadi substation has caused power cuts in areas served under the Information technology corridor, it said.

Velachery, Anakaputhur, Shankar Nagar in Pammal, Basant Nagar, Taramani, and Adayar have been shut down of power as a precautionary measure due to waterlogging and inundation.

Several families from T- Nagar, Alwarpet, West Mambalam areas have shifted to business hotels in the city following long power cuts and waterlogging. Internet failure at homes has also led to people shifting stay to hotels.

Manonmani. G, a software engineer at West Mambalam, said that she shifted her family to a business hotel after the overhead tanks dried up following power shortage. She said,” With rains and power cuts predicted this week, we will stay at the hotel and return home only after the water recedes. We have taken two rooms and are comfortable now and I can work with internet functioning smoothly.”

People are willing to shell out as much as Rs 3,000 to 4,000 for a comfortable stay and with availability of food, most are treating this as a vacation from the daily routine.

K.P. Ramakrishnan, a software consultant said, “We are at least lucky that we can get a room at a price of Rs 3,000 to 4,000. This has helped us survive the rains and power cuts and lack of water at our apartment. More than this I am catering to clients in US and UK and if the internet is disrupted my work is affected. As far as my parents, wife, and children are concerned they are enjoying a vacation. So it’s comfortable and we will have to deal with the rain-affected issues after water recedes.”

According to the fire and rescue teams and the Water Resources Department officials, it would take a few more days for Chennai to return to normalcy.

The IMD has predicted that the rain will decrease in many parts of the state but in the Nilgiris, Kanyakumari, Vellore, Ranipet, and Coimbatore districts, heavy downpours are predicted for a few more days.

As many as 185 relief camps are functioning in the state for rain-affected people as most of the low-lying areas in several districts are inundated. In Chennai and the adjoining areas, 44 relief camps are functioning.

Eleven teams of the NDRF, eight companies of the SDRF, fire, and rescue personnel, and police have been deployed to remove uprooted trees and clear waterlogging.
