Kerala freezes order permitting TN to fell trees

The Kerala government has frozen the order of the forest department to fell trees at Mullaperiyar dam. There was a request from the Tamil Nadu water resources minister, S. Duraimurugan for felling of a few trees to strengthen the Baby dam at Mullaperiyar.

The Kerala government Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Bennychen P. Thomas had given orders for cutting of trees. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin had thanked the Kerala Chief Minister on Sunday for the sanction to cut trees near the Baby dam.

After the thanksgiving letter of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister came in the open with media carrying the report, opposition came out strongly against the state government and said that the ‘state has become submissive to Tamil Nadu in the Mullaperiyar issue’. The Congress state president K. Sudhakaran and BJP state president K. Surendran demanded the resignation of the state forest minister.

Senior Congress leader and former state opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala pointed the finger towards the state Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and charged that no officer would sign such an order without getting consent from Kerala Chief Minister.

Kerala Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF), Bennychen P. Thomas has, according to information sent a report to the Kerala forest minister’s office stating that he had given sanction to cut trees following a request by the Tamil Nadu government a few months before and that a decision was taken at the Secretary-level discussions between the Forest and Water Resources departments.

The stand of Kerala government all along was for the construction of a new dam at Mullaperiyar after decommissioning the present one that is 126 years old. The UN had in a recent report cited that the present Mullaperiyar dam posed a grave threat and that it had outlived its age. The UN had also recommended the construction of a new dam.

TN to celebrate birth anniv of Rajendra Chola-I as govt event

The Tourism, Culture and Religious Endowments Department under the Tamil Nadu government announced on Wednesday that it will celebrate the birth anniversary of Rajendra Chola-I, one of the greatest emperors of the Chola dynasty, as a government event.

The birth anniversary of Rajendra Chola-I is celebrated in the Tamil month of ‘Aadi’, but as the day is already over, the department has decided to celebrate the anniversary from next year onwards in grnad style.

Rajendra Chola is considered by Tamil historians and students of history as a great warrior and his exercises in the sea were unparalleled.

He was also one of the foremost Chola kings who was instrumental in building temples. According to Tamil historians, he had also established maritime trade with present-day Southeast Asia.

Historian and Chairman of Gangaikonda Cholapuram Development Council, R. Komagan, told IANS, “The decision of the Tamil Nadu government to celebrate the birth anniversary of Rajendra Chola-I is highly appreciated. It will also develop tourism in the Ariyalur area. We also urge the government to include the naval supremacy and maritime trade of Rajendra Chola-I in the history textbooks of schools in the state.”

He said the birth anniversary celebrations of Rajendra Chola-I were restricted among a few history enthusiasts and students, while that of his father, Raja Raja Chola, was celebrated as a government event for decades in Thanjavur.

Stalin asks Modi to allocate 500-ton medical oxygen

Stalin also sought an allocation of 500 tons of medical oxygen to which Modi replied that the request will be processed…reports Asian Lite News.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K.Stalin on Saturday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi for increasing the medical oxygen allocation to 500 tons.

Stalin and Modi had a telecon on Saturday, said a state government statement.

According to the statement, Stalin had sought the central government’s cooperation in the state government’s action to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Stalin also sought an allocation of 500 tons of medical oxygen to which Modi replied that the request will be processed.

The Prime Minister had told Stalin that more diagnostic tests, to check the infections, should be carried out, and not so severely infected persons should be advised for home quarantine. Stalin said: “The availability of oxygen in Tamil Nadu is very very critical and there was an unfortunate incident of 13 deaths at Chengalpattu 2 days ago. We request your kind intervention to get revised orders issued and provide full support to Tamil Nadu in this hour of crisis.”

Drawing the attention of Modi to the severe crisis with regard to the availability of medical oxygen in the state, he said the daily consumption of oxygen is expected to touch 840 MT in the next two weeks from the current consumption of 440 MT.

Stalin said at the emergency meeting held on Thursday by the officials of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) with Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala, it was decided to allocate, 40 MT from INOX, Kanjikode, Kerala for the next four days, 60 MT from Praxair, Sriperumbudur (Linde Saint Gobain) of which 20 MT to be provided after two days, and 120 MT from SAIL and Linde, Rourkela to meet medium-term needs.

“The revised allotment orders are still awaited,” he said.

Stalin assured Modi of his full support and cooperation in the latter’s efforts to tackle this unprecedented pandemic and save the nation.

First session of TN Assembly on May 11

The 16th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has been summoned to meet for its first session on May 11 at the Omandurar Government Estate here.

The newly elected Members will make and subscribe Oath or Affirmation on that day.

In a statement issued here K. Srinivasan, Secretary, Tamil Nadu Assembly said the assembly has been summoned at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

The Members who have been elected are requested to bring the Certificate of Election.

The election of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly will be held at 10 a.m. on May 12.

Elections for the Tamil Nadu assembly was held on April 6 and counting of votes was held on May 2.

The DMK party won the polls and its President M.K. Stalin was sworn in as Chief Minister on Friday.

BJP promises Rs 6,000 for TN fishermen

Ahead of the upcoming elections, parties and leaders are on full mode campaign with a number of promises to the people. An annual financial assistance of Rs.6,000 for fishermen; crop loan at zero per cent; enactment of anti-conversion law and implementation of anti-cow slaughter law; free tablets for students, revival of legislative council were some of the promises made by Tamil Nadu BJP in its manisfesto.

Releasing the manifesto, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises here on Monday Nitin Gadkari said the manifesto gives highest priority for farmers.

He said the government has decided towards diversification of agriculture towards energy and increasing the production of ethanol.

Gadkari said 10 per cent ethanol is now being added in petrol. The ethanol economy is about Rs 20,000 crore.

Instead of importing crude oil, the government has decided that the farmers should benefit by going in favour of bio-ethanol.

In an attempt to attract the fishermen, the BJP has promised Rs 6,000 per year as is being given to farmers now. The party has also promised setting up of fish drying centres and others.

For the agricultural sector, the BJP has promised crop loans at zero per cent; export of treated toddy from coconut and palm trees; solar pump sets at subsidised rates.

The party has also promised Nilgiris to be declared as Organic Farming District; dedicated policy for organic farming; setting up of traditional paddy/millet seed banks and others.

The party also promised setting up of separate boards for development of Turmeric, indigenous cattle breeds and management of Hindu temples and a separate department for welfare of non-resident Tamils.

Priests and cooks in village temples will be provided a minimum income of Rs 5,000 per month.

While the AIADMK government has not implemented the 10 per cent reservation for the economically weaker section, its ally the BJP has promised implementation of the same in Tamil Nadu.
