Meta’s Threads may bring X-like trending topics feature

These screenshots showed a numbered list of trending topics plus how many “threads” were actively discussing each item, reports TechCrunch…reports Asian Lite News

To compete with Elon Musk’s X, Meta’s Threads app is reportedly preparing to launch a trending topics feature.

The potential feature was discovered by an app developer who shared screenshots of the feature that a Meta employee had originally posted.

These screenshots showed a numbered list of trending topics plus how many “threads” were actively discussing each item, reports TechCrunch.

The post was spotted by user Willian Max, who believes it was intended to be sent to an internal feed only accessible to Meta workers. “Oops. I think the trending topics feature just leaked on the timeline,” he posted on Threads.

The screenshot reveals top trends like Drake’s new album at No. 1 and other current topics, like Billboard’s Latin Music Week or Disney+’s release of Loki Season 2. In contrast to X, Threads’ primary Trends list does not seem to be accompanied by additional trending lists by categories, such as News, Sports, and Entertainment, or a list of Trends that are customized “For You”, the report mentioned.

The proposed addition to Threads would be a significant move towards making it more competitive with X. The Instagram-run app is trying to take advantage of the frequent changes and disruptions on the Musk-owned microblogging network to attract users to join Threads instead.

Meanwhile, Meta is preparing to allow Threads users to delete their accounts without affecting their Instagram profiles by December. Currently, there is no way for Threads users to delete their accounts without deleting their Instagram accounts.

‘Threads to add search, desktop version in next few weeks’

‘For you’ is a view of the Threads feed that includes a mix of posts from profiles that users have chosen to follow and recommended accounts…reports Asian Lite News

Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company will add search and web experiences to his Twitter rival Threads on Instagram in the next few weeks. “Search and web coming in the next few weeks,” Zuckerberg posted on Threads, saying he’s “excited about the team’s pace of shipping.”

“A good week for Threads. The community here is on the trajectory I expect to build a vibrant long term app. Lots of work ahead but excited about the team’s pace of shipping. Search and web coming in the next few weeks,” the Meta CEO said. A desktop web version has been high on his list and Instagram head recently said “we’re working on it”.

Last month, Zuckerberg announced new updates on Threads including a ‘Following’ feed and ‘Translations’. “Since the launch of Threads, the Instagram team has been continuing to listen to community feedback and is working as quickly as possible to deliver new features to improve people’s experience,” he said.

“Your feed on Threads allows you to view posts from other profiles, now with two options.” ‘For you’ is a view of the Threads feed that includes a mix of posts from profiles that users have chosen to follow and recommended accounts.

On the other hand, ‘Following’ will only show posts from people users follow in chronological order. Threads had reached 100 million sign-ups faster than any social media platform in history.

Taliban endorse Musk’s Twitter, slams Threads

Anas Haqqani officially endorsed Twitter over Meta’s Threads that has crossed 100 million users within a week of its launch…reports Asian Lite News

The Taliban has come out in support of Elon Musk-run Twitter over Mark Zuckerberg-run Threads on Instagram, saying other platforms cannot replace the original micro-blogging platform.

Anas Haqqani, a Taliban thought-leader with family connections to the leadership, officially endorsed Twitter over Meta’s Threads that has crossed 100 million users within a week of its launch.

“Twitter has two important advantages over other social media platforms. The first privilege is the freedom of speech. The second privilege is the public nature and credibility of Twitter,” Haqqani posted.

He said that Twitter doesn’t have an intolerant policy like Meta.

“Other platforms cannot replace it,” added the senior member of the Taliban.

A Twitter user posted: “What has it come to, even Taliban endorsing Twitter”.

According to reports, while Twitter has fallen out of favour with several prominent people, celebrities and advertising brands since Musk took over in October last year and made drastic changes, the Taliban seems to love it.

Two Taliban officials even bought blue verification check marks after Musk started selling them in January this year for $8 a month, reports Vice.

The Taliban is very aggressive about using social media platforms to push its message across to its audience.

However, “Facebook and TikTok both view the Taliban as a terrorist organisation and disallow them from posting. It’s a ban that persists to this day”, the report mentioned.
